Abstract:
Extracurricular activities as a variety of organizational forms of students gathering in free extracurricular time at elementary school have predominantly cultural, artistic, sporting, technical, recreational or scientific character (Cindrić, 1992). Through them, students meet their needs and develop the culture of using their leisure time. Thanks to its pedagogic potential, chess is increasingly used as an educational tool and taught in elementary schools around the world. This trend begins to follow Croatia, where chess in many schools is carried out as an extracurricular and/or extracurricular activity. In this paper we will present and analyze the advantages that chess has for the elementary school students and empirically determine the occurrence of chess as an extracurricular activity in the schools in the City of Zagreb. Also, based on the results of the qualitative research, the views of the chess teachers regarding advantages of chess implementation, ways of determining the interests of students, and teaching methods used in chess teaching will be presented.

Abstract:
The children of immigrants’ educational progress and success have been the focus of social research for decades. Although it is known that extracurricular activities contribute to adolescent development and overall well-being, it is also clear that participation varies across immigrant generations. Yet, empirical study explaining generational differences in extracurricular activities across different racial/ethnic groups is limited. This study uses data from the National Longitudinal Study of Adolescent Health (Add Health) to investigate if family characteristics (i.e., socioeconomic status, structure, parental supervision, and parent–child communication and interaction) explain generational extracurricular activity participation for four racial/ethnic groups (Whites, Blacks, Hispanics, and Asians). Findings indicate that family characteristics indeed mediate the children of immigrants’ participation in school extracurricular activities. Moreover, results also denote that family characteristics are particularly relevant for Hispanic children of immigrants’ extracurricular activity participation.

Abstract:
Background:This study’s purpose was to assess the opportunities for North Carolina adolescents to be physically active in extracurricular middle school environments and to compare opportunities across community types. Methods:Data were analyzed based on the results of an electronic questionnaire distributed to a sample of 431 schools with a response rate of 75.4% (N = 325).Results:Nearly all schools offered interscholastic sports while fewer than half offered intramurals or noncompetitive activities to students. “Open gym” was offered at only 35% of schools, while 24% of schools offered extracurricular activities to students with disabilities. Overall, 43.4% of schools offered special transportation to students who participated in some extracurricular physical activities. Schools in rural areas generally offered fewer programs and had fewer supports than schools located in more urbanized areas. Over two-thirds of rural schools offered no extracurricular programs other than interscholastic sports. Conclusions:Schools can be important settings for physical activity. North Carolina’s middle schools and its rural schools in particular, are falling short in efforts to provide extracurricular physical activity programming recommended by researchers and policy groups.1−6 Lower accessibility to extracurricular physical activities may partially contribute to higher levels of physical inactivity found in the state.

Abstract:
The paper examines approaches to increasing levels of leisure time physical activity in higher school students. The following methods were used: theoretical analysis of special scientific and methodological literature and documentary materials; comparison and matching (comparative method); sociological techniques (surveying was conducted using Google Forms); pedagogical methods; methods for assessing physical activity; and the methods of mathematical statistics. The study was carried out at the National technical university of Ukraine “Igor Sikorsky Kyiv Polytechnic Institute”. The study involved first and second year students (in total 80 students). The degree of involvement of students in health-enhancing extracurricular activities was determined and the attitude of students to extracurricular forms of organization of physical education classes was assessed according to the following criteria: content of classes; the effectiveness of extracurricular physical education classes; level of logistics; regularity of extracurricular physical education classes; availability of extracurricular activities for different categories of students; compliance of classes with the interests and preferences of students; use of innovative types of physical activity during classes; qualification of research and teaching staff who conduct physical education classes; the quality of theoretical training provided by research and teaching staff during extracurricular time. The main shortcomings of the organizational support for extracurricular physical education classes were identified: insufficient efficiency of extracurricular activities; ignoring innovative approaches to the organization of classes, popular types of physical activity, a wide arsenal of tools and methods of physical education, and modern fitness technologies, which have repeatedly proven their effectiveness in extracurricular activities; and lack of classes during winter and summer vacations, as well as during exam sessions. For most students, physical activity is not a priority. The reasons that prevent students from participating in physical activities and sports were identified as follows: lack of conditions; features of the emotional and volitional sphere of personality (inability to overcome laziness and passivity); lack of theoretical knowledge on designing health-enhancing activities; lack of company; inappropriate health condition; and lack of external incentives.

Abstract:
Business planning competitions [BPCs] are a commonly offered yet under-examined extracurricular activity. Given the extent of sceptical comment about business planning, this paper offers what the authors believe is a much-needed critical discussion of the assumptions that underpin the provision of such competitions. In doing so it is suggested that these competitions, being based on business plans, could be limiting the entrepreneurial activity they seek to stimulate. As a result it could be said that BPCs are in a state of flux and require an evolved approach emphasizing implementation rather than planning for implementation. The issues highlighted set the scene for further critical questioning of the competition agenda and expected to be of value to those designing and offering competitions as part of their extra-curricular entrepreneurship education portfolio.

Abstract:
This article is focused on the connection between extracurricular sports and alcohol consumption among students in vocational schools (VS). Data collected in 2014 contains information on engagement in individual and team sports and frequency of alcohol consumption by students from vocational schools in St.-Petersburg (29 schools, 2935 students, 77% of them being boys with an average age of 17). Analysis with logistic regressions demonstrates that the effect of extra-curricular sports on drinking is rather low. The main conclusions are: (1) patterns of alcohol consumption are different for boys and girls; (2) team sports are positively related to frequency of drinking; (3) there are no gender differences in the relations between team sports and drinking; and (4) reaching the legal drinking age (18 years old) is more strongly associated with drinking than engaging in team sports. Future studies of adolescent risk behavior are necessary to understand whether these results are unique for extracurricular sports activities or common for all extracurricular activities which involve teams.

Abstract:
The sample consisted of 121 respondents from fifth and sixth-grade elementary schools from the City of Zadar. A research was conducted to determine the differences between students who, in addition to physical education and health education, also attend some other form of extracurricular sports activity. By conducting a descriptive analysis, we obtained results that show us that male students engaged in extracurricular activity achieved 21.28% better average results than respondents who do not engage in extracurricular activities. Female respondents engaged in extracurricular activities achieved 9.16% better results than respondents who did not engage in extracurricular activities (better scores in the test to assess functional ability (F6 test)). Using the t-test, we found that empirical levels of significance were statistically significant (p = 0.000) for all respondents in both sexes in functional abilities (F6 test). The authors can claim that students attending some forms of extracurricular sports activity have a better score in the variable F6. By performing regression analysis, authors cannot predict the result in the F6 test based on anthropometric characteristics of body height (TV) and body weight (TT). To improve the functional abilities of students, each teacher should encourage them to attend some additional forms of extracurricular sports activities in the form of improving the overall anthropological status.

Abstract:
Participation in extracurricular activities has long been recognized as having important benefits for business students, including the development of competencies relevant to future career success. Unfortunately, a review of the literature suggests that what constitutes an extracurricular activity remains ambiguous and unclear as no generally-accepted definition has been established in the literature. Instead, the meaning is often described in terms of examples. It is argued that the lack of a definition hampers research because it does not allow for proper classification of activities. The purpose of this study is to address this gap through a review of the relevant literature. Based on the review, definitions for extracurricular and co-curricular are proposed along with additional clarifications. Implications for scholars and academic advising are also provided.

Abstract:
Many youth participate in extracurricular activities, and research has linked activity participation with school engagement and academic success. Social-ecological theory suggests that the social contexts of different types of extracurricular activities may differentially affect student outcomes. Yet, there is scant research examining the relation between various extracurricular activities and student outcomes. The current study seeks to address this gap by exploring how participation in three activities (sports, clubs, and arts), and combinations of these activities are associated with perceptions of school climate, using multilevel modelling. Participants included 15,004 high school students from 28 schools across 11 states in the United States. Findings suggest that students involved in extracurricular activities have more favourable perceptions of social-emotional security, adult support, student support, and school connectedness. However, these perceptions vary by activity type and combination, and do not appear to have a stacked effect in which involvement in more activities yields more favourable outcomes. We conclude that extracurricular activity participation may serve as a mechanism to promote a positive school climate. Implications for research and practice are discussed.

Introduction. Behavioral stereotypes learned in adolescence in the absence of self-control skills of aggressive behavior can lead to the formation of a stable destructive model of younger generation’s behavior, which destructively affects society. The purpose of the article is to study the specificity of manifestation of adolescents’ aggressive behavior in after-school team-game activities. The relevance of the article is determined by the significance of manifestations of adolescents’ aggressive behavior for the formation of selfcontrol skills of aggressive behavior and their insufficient knowledge of extracurricular team-game activities. Materials and Methods. The study was conducted on the basis of a survey aimed at identifying the patterns of adolescents’ aggressive behavior. To study the problem, a stating experiment was carried out, in which 456 teenage schoolchildren took part. The results were processed using the Kolmogorov – Smirnov criterion and the Mann – Whitney criterion. The calculations were performed using the IBM SPSS Statistics 21 software. Results. The findings showed that, compared with peers, adolescents participating in extracurricular teamgame activities have more evident indicators of physical, indirect aggression and negativity. The level of aggressiveness index, irritability and suspicion in the studied adolescents was lower compared to adolescents not involved in extracurricular activities. Differentiation of the characteristics of adolescents’ aggressive behavior in extracurricular team-game activities was revealed. Compared to their peers, teenage boys engaged in team-game activity showed lower values of the aggressiveness index, they are less irritable, suspicious and hostile, but they demonstrate greater physical aggression, including in its direct form. In turn, adolescent girls engaged in team-game activities are more likely to show physical and indirect aggression, negativity and resentment, and also show lower values of the index of aggressiveness and suspicion, they are less likely to show verbal aggression, but the degree of expression of direct verbal aggression is slightly higher among peers. Discussion and Conclusion. The performed study advocated the concept of specificity of adolescents’ aggressive manifestations in extracurricular team-game activities. The obtained results contribute to the development of the theory of aggressive behavior. This article may be useful to researchers and practitioners involved in organizing extracurricular activities of schoolchildren at a secondary school, as well as in conditions of socio-cultural recreation.

Abstract:
Extracurricular practice is an activity that promotes the overall development of students and continues the content of classroom teaching. How to realize the effective development of extracurricular practice is a complex educational problem. When students face a boring and single classroom form, extracurricular practice will play a vital role in realizing the comprehensive development of students’ morality, intelligence, physical education, and art. According to observation and literature analysis, it is found that rural elementary school students participate in less extracurricular practice and are closely related to students, parents, and schools. Teachers’ and parents’ excessive demands on academic performance have become the main reason for less extracurricular practice. Further analysis of the reasons, including the low salary of teachers, limited teaching and training opportunities; the effect of extracurricular practice is not proportional to the investment; the practice results are difficult to unify the standard; the rural extracurricular practice lacks sufficient financial support. Based on this, we suggest trying to put forward some suggestions to promote the development of extracurricular practice from the aspects of understanding of extracurricular practice, course structure, homework form, feedback results, urban and rural resources, etc.

Abstract:
Extracurricular physical activity in children and adolescents can help achieve compliance with the World Health Organization (WHO) recommendations for physical activity. The purpose of this study was to evaluate factors in school and family environments of children and adolescents in Spain that could be related to the practice of extracurricular physical activity. Multistage random cluster sampling was conducted to include 128 schools with the participation of 10,096 students between the ages of 7 and 16. Participants completed the survey of sports habits designed by the National Sports Council. The results revealed a higher participation in extracurricular sports activities among boys (OR: 1.67 (1.5–1.9)) and students in primary education (up to 12 years old) (OR: 1.8 (1.7–2.0)). Likewise, a statistically significant relationship (p < 0.005) was observed between families where another family member practiced sports and lower number of screen time hours, improved academic performance, and better self-perceived health. Participation of children and adolescents in extracurricular sports activities seems to be associated with their immediate environment. It is therefore essential to emphasize the importance of establishing physical activity habits from an early age in family and school environments.

Abstract The purpose of this study was to investigate the extent to which extracurricular activities are included in Individualized Education Programs (IEPs) of secondary age students with intellectual disability (ID). Student characteristics (grade, disability, use of augmentative and alternative communication) were examined to explore potential group differences. Participants were 498 special education teachers who had at least one student with ID on their caseload who had participated in a school sponsored extracurricular activity. Data were collected through an online questionnaire sent to members of a national listserv for transition professionals. Findings reveal that 63.69% (n = 314) of teachers reported they included information about extracurricular activities in the IEP; however, only 59.61% (n = 186) of these teachers also reported their student worked on IEP goals during extracurricular activities. Student characteristics were related to the presence of extracurricular activities in the IEP, number of IEP goals students worked on during extracurricular activities, student's most important IEP goal, and whether students received instruction on their most important IEP goal during extracurricular activities.
