Abstract The sources of hydrocarbons in crude palm kernel oil were investigated by a series of laboratory-controlled oil extractions of kernels of varying quality. Site examinations of palm kernel-crushing plants were also conducted to determine possible sources of hydrocarbon contamination of palm kernels throughout the process of kernel extraction. Parallel to these studies, a random survey of crude palm kernel oil (CPKO) produced by different kernel crushers was also carried out to determine the range of hydrocarbon concentrations in locally produced CPKO. This study showed that hydrocarbons can be picked up from sources such as glassware, extracting apparatus, and plastic containers and stoppers. Extraction of oil from low-quality kernels that were both moldy and rancid, broken kernels, and kernels plus added shells also resulted in a higher hydrocarbon level in the final CPKO. Overheating and cooking of the kernels before extraction also contributed to the overall hydrocarbon content. The random survey of hydrocarbon level showed a range of 0.6–7.1 ppm.

Due to their established health benefits, phytochemicals such as phenolics, carotenoids, sterols, and alkaloids are becoming more and more popular. However, some of these phytochemicals may not be amenable to typical extraction techniques. Examples of innovative methods include supercritical fluid extraction (SFE), microwave extraction (MWE), pulsed electric field (PEF), highpressure processing (HPP), and ultrasonic extraction (UE), and ohmic heating (OH). Supercritical fluid extraction is one of the methods that is most often researched and has already found commercial use for number of products. The most used supercritical fluid for agricultural products is carbon dioxide. Additionally growing, and already having commercial uses, is microwave extraction. By using electromagnetic radiation to quickly and uniformly heat the matrix, this technique produces extractions with high quantities of phytochemicals and few impurities. Despite current interest in pulsed electric fields, which have several benefits over thermal treatments, their usage is still limited to a small number of industrial units. Ohmic heating occurs when alternating current is sent through the matrix, heat is produced bysample's electrical resistance discharging. Low-frequency electrical energy is demonstrated to promote the extraction of phytochemicals since it dissipates into heat quickly and uniformly. High-pressure processing has potential to improve diffusion, increase mass transfer and cell permeability, and maintain food quality. HPP reduces negative effects of heat while greatly enhancing texture. HPP employs high pressures and moderate temperatures in comparison to traditional extraction techniques. Ascorbic acid (AA), or vitamin C, is one of the most important vitamins consumed through the diet due to its critical role in many biological processes. Although the human body cannot synthesize it, AA is essential in maintaining healthy bodily structure, acting as a cofactor of many enzymes involved in collagen synthesis and an efficient immune system. At the same time, AA is used in the cosmetic field for its antioxidant and antipigmentary properties, in the food industry as additive, and in chemical synthesis as reducing agent. AA can be chemically synthesized, produced by the oxidative fermentation of bacteria, or extracted from natural sources. This review addresses the most recent developments in its manufacture, including techniques for extracting vitamin C from plants, fruits, vegetables, algae, and leaves, and focusing on the most commonly used green methods, i.e., ultrasound-assisted extraction, microwave-assisted extraction, pressurized liquid extraction, and supercritical fluid extraction. These methods are based on mild extraction conditions, environmentally friendly solvents, low time, cost, and energy consumption. In contrast, their extraction yields are comparable to or even higher than those of conventional methods.

Biological wastewater treatment plants produce great amounts of sludge daily. It is a very big loading (cost) for treating the waste sludge. Polyhydroxyalkanoates are a family of polyhydroxyesters. The technologies of extracting PHAs from wasted sewage sludges of municipal wastewater, fermentation industry and husbandry were developed in the study. In the NaOCl/SDS extraction technology, the concentration of NaOCl and liquid-solid ratio are two essential factors directly influencing extraction efficiency. The experimental results verified under the optimal conditions for extracting PHAs, the content of recovered PHAs was 44.2±0.89 mgPHA/gVSS and the purity of recovered PHAs was >99.5 wt% for the waste sludge from municipal wastewater treatment plants. For fermentation industry sludge, under the adequate extraction conditions for PHAs recovery, the content and purity of recovered PHAs were 18.8±0.66 mgPHA/gVSS and 50.6±6.83 wt%, respectively. For husbandry sludge, the content and purity of recovered PHAs were 33.7±0.16 mgPHA/gVSS and 76.7±5.2 wt%, respectively.

A healthy diet rich in plant proteins can help in preventing chronic degenerative diseases. Plant-based protein consists of derivatives from algae, fungi (like mushrooms) and other plant products including stems, leaves, fruits, vegetables, grains, seeds, legumes and nuts. These sources are not only rich in protein, but also contain a high percentage of iron, calcium, folates, fiber, carbohydrates, fats etc. Hence, it is essential to explore plant-based protein sources and their other nutritional components to address existing food insecurity issues. Nowadays, the impact of food processing has produced promising results in extracting valuable bio-compounds including proteins from the plant matrix. In this view, PEF technology has secured an exceptional place in solving food quality issues through minimized thermal effects in the samples, improved extraction capabilities at a shorter time, higher extraction levels, high nutritional content of extracted samples, greater shelf-life extension and increased microbial killing efficiency. It is an energy efficient process which is used as a pre-treatment to increase selective extraction of intracellular compounds through electroporation technique. Here, the processing parameters play a significant role in obtaining enhanced extraction levels. These parameters have also considerably influenced the protein digestibility and amino acid modification. So far, PEF has been producing remarkable results in plant protein extraction research. Among various plant sources mentioned above, there is a limited literature available on the use of PEF-assisted protein extraction from legumes. In this review, the authors have discussed essential legumes and their nutritional components and have highlighted how PEF can be beneficial in extracting the protein levels from these sources. Further research should focus on PEF-assisted protein extraction from legumes, specifically analyzing the properties of protein quality and quantity.

In this review, a compilation of articles in databases on the extraction methods and applications of hyaluronic acid (HA) was carried out. HA is a highly hydrated component of different tissues, including connective, epithelial, and neural. It is an anionic, linear glycosaminoglycan (GAG) primarily found in the native extracellular matrix (ECM) of soft connective tissues. Included in the review were studies on the extraction methods (chemical, enzymatical, combined) of HA, describing advantages and disadvantages as well as news methods of extraction. The applications of HA in food are addressed, including oral supplementation, biomaterials, medical research, and pharmaceutical and cosmetic industry applications. Subsequently, we included a section related to the structure and penetration routes of the skin, with emphasis on the benefits of systems for transdermal drug delivery nanocarriers as promoters of percutaneous absorption. Finally, the future trends on the applications of HA were included. This final section contains the effects before, during, and after the application of HA-based products.

Silica is the most abundant compound on the Earth’s surface. The content of silica can be found in agricultural waste ash and mineral rocks. Extracting silica from natural sources is advantageous due to its economic feasibility and easily obtained. Silica has a wide range of applications, such as in fertilizers, adsorbents, organic reaction catalysis, biofuels/alternative energy production, and as an antimicrobial agent. One type of rock that contains the highest amount of silica is Pyrophyllite. Recent research trends have focused on various methods and sources for silica extraction, yet extracting silica from mineral rocks presents its own challenges. Pyrophyllite rock contains a high amount of silica, but its extraction is quite difficult due to the presence of crystalline silicate mineral phases. This study aims to compare the silica extraction process on Pyrophyllite rocks from Malang using the sol-gel method versus the alkali fusion method.

Plant nutrients extracted from sustainable sources, namely Alaria esculenta and Lemna minor, have been evaluated for their nutritional value in an attempt to identify their potential as protein-rich sources. The implementation of green technologies such as high-power ultrasound to extract nutrients from these alternative biomasses was studied and compared to more traditional techniques. Probe sonicators fared better than bath sonicators in extracting bioactive compounds while ultrasound assisted with enzymes was more efficient than conventional or alkali extraction methods. Lemna minor was found to have the greatest extraction yield of nutrients.

Since it is known that hyaluronic acid contributes to soft tissue growth, elasticity, and scar reduction, different strategies of producing HA have been explored in order to satisfy the current demand of HA in pharmaceutical products and formulations. The current interest deals with production via bacterial and yeast fermentation and extraction from animal sources; however, the main challenge is the right extraction technique and strategy since the original sources (e.g., fermentation broth) represent a complex system containing a number of components and solutes, which complicates the achievement of high extraction rates and purity. In terms of scientific data, one of the tasks is the extraction of social networks from information sources that have the nature of big data. Meanwhile, in terms of artificial intelligence, the presence of contradictory methods has an impact on knowledge. There are a variety of possible approaches and strategies to superficial methods as a starting concept. Each method has its advantages, but in general, it contributes to the integration of each other, namely simplifying, enriching, and emphasizing the results.

Oils derived from plant sources, mainly fixed oils from seeds and essential oil from other parts of the plant, are gaining interest as they are the rich source of beneficial compounds that possess potential applications in different industries due to their preventive and therapeutic actions. The essential oils are used in food, medicine, cosmetics, and agriculture industries as they possess antimicrobial, anticarcinogenic, anti-inflammatory and immunomodulatory properties. Plant based oils contain polyphenols, phytochemicals, and bioactive compounds which show high antioxidant activity. The extractions of these oils are a crucial step in terms of the yield and quality attributes of plant oils. This review paper outlines the different modern extraction techniques used for the extraction of different seed oils, including microwave-assisted extraction (MAE), pressurized liquid extraction (PLE), cold-pressed extraction (CPE), ultrasound-assisted extraction (UAE), supercritical-fluid extraction (SFE), enzyme-assisted extraction (EAE), and pulsed electric field-assisted extraction (PEF). For the identification and quantification of essential and bioactive compounds present in seed oils, different modern techniques—such as high-performance liquid chromatography (HPLC), gas chromatography–mass spectrometry (GC-MS), Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), gas chromatography–infrared spectroscopy (GC-IR), atomic fluorescence spectroscopy (AFS), and electron microscopy (EM)—are highlighted in this review along with the beneficial effects of these essential components in different in vivo and in vitro studies and in different applications. The primary goal of this research article is to pique the attention of researchers towards the different sources, potential uses and applications of oils in different industries.

In this paper, we present a data extraction model based on visual segmentation, DOM tree and JSON approach which is known as Wrapper Extraction of Image using DOM and JSON (WEIDJ) for extracting semi-structured data from biodiversity web. The large number of information from multiple sources of web which is image’s information will be extracted using three different approach; Document Object Model (DOM), Wrapper image using Hybrid DOM and JSON (WHDJ) and Wrapper Extraction of Image using DOM and JSON (WEIDJ). Experiments were conducted on several biodiversity website. The experiment results show that WEIDJ approach promising results with respect to time analysis values. WEIDJ wrapper has successfully extracted greater than 100 images of data from the multi-source web biodiversity of over 15 different websites.</span>

Abstract:
Collagen is a type of protein that is plentiful and has a wide variety of applications. Collagen is often derived from porcine and bovine, however, both sources are considered to transmit disease, particularly porcine sources, which haram to Moslem. There are some methods for collagen extraction, on of them using acid method. The purpose of this study was to obtain the best method of extraction and analyze collagen from alternative sources, specifically salmon skin, which is abundant. This study included two stages, i.e. pretreatment with sodium hydroxide for eliminating non-collagen proteins prior from salmon skin and extraction with acetic acid for collagen extraction. Pretreatment was carried out utilizing a split-plot design with parameters for determining the levels of non-collagen protein. The extraction step used a factorial completely randomized design to observe yields, amino acids, functional groups, and molecular weights. The results indicated that the extract was collagen. It was indicated by high glycine, alanine, and proline amino acid content. The result of SDS-PAGE showed the extracted was type I collagen was characterized by two identical 1 chains and one similar, but 2 different chains. The propeptides of type I procollagen have a similar composition. The most effective method for eliminating non-collagen proteins prior to extracting collagen from salmon skin was pretreatment with a 0.05 M NaOH solution for 10 hours. Collagen extraction using acetic acid at concentration of 0.5 M for 48 hours resulted in a yield of 12.79%.

This review explores eco-friendly methods for extracting bioactive natural products from diverse sources. The introductory exploration emphasizes the increasing demand for sustainable extraction methods, with a focus on the environmental impact of conventional approaches. Addressing existing knowledge gaps, this review outlines the key objectives of evaluating various green extraction technologies, including supercritical fluid extraction, pressurized liquid extraction, ultrasound-assisted extraction, enzyme-assisted extraction, and others. The primary findings underscore the remarkable potential and advancements achieved with green solvents, specifically deep eutectic solvents and bio-based solvents. This review elucidates the synergistic effects achieved by combining different extraction techniques, exemplified by ultrasound-microwave-assisted extraction and sequential supercritical fluid and pressurized liquid extraction, among others. Notwithstanding the promising results, this review emphasizes the importance of acknowledging and addressing challenges such as standardization, selectivity, scalability, and economic viability.

A blind source separation method is described to extract sources from data mixtures where the underlying sources are sparse and correlated. The approach used is to detect and analyze segments of time where one source exists on its own. The method does not assume independence of sources and probability density functions are not assumed for any of the sources. A comparison is made between the proposed method and the Fast-ICA and Clusterwise PCA methods. It is shown that the proposed method works best for cases where the underlying sources are strongly correlated because Fast-ICA assumes zero correlation between sources and Clusterwise PCA can be sensitive to overlap between sources. However, for cases of sources that are sparse and weakly correlated with each other, there is a tendency for Fast-ICA and Clusterwise PCA to have better performances than the proposed method, the reason being that these methods appear to be more robust to changes in input parameters to the algorithms. In addition, because of the deflationary nature of the proposed method, there is a tendency for estimates to be more affected by noise than Fast-ICA when the number of sources increases. The paper concludes with a discussion concerning potential applications for the proposed method.

As the utilization and consumption of lignocellulosic biomass increases, so too will the need for an adequate supply of feedstock. To meet these needs, novel waste feedstock materials will need to be utilized. Exploitation of these novel feedstocks will require information both on the effects of solvent extraction on the succeeding analysis of potential novel feedstocks and how accurate current methodologies are in determining the composition of novel lignocellulosic feedstocks, particularly the carbohydrate and lignin fractions. In this study, the effects of solvent extraction on novel feedstocks, including tree foliage, tree bark and spent mushroom compost, with 95% ethanol, water and both sequentially were examined. Chemical analyses were carried out to determine the moisture content, ash, extractives, post-hydrolysis sugars, Klason lignin (KL) and acid-soluble lignin (ASL) within the selected feedstocks. The result of extraction could be seen most strongly for Klason lignin, with a strong association between higher levels of Klason lignin levels and greater amounts of non-removed extractives (tree foliage and bark). Higher Klason lignin levels are reported to be due the condensation of non-removed extractives during hydrolysis, hence the lower Klason lignin determinations following extraction are more exact. In addition, total sugar determinations were lower following extractions. This is because of the solubility of non-cell-wall carbohydrates; thus, the determinations following extraction are more accurate representations of structural cell-wall polysaccharides such as cellulose. Such determinations will assist in determining the best way to utilize novel feedstocks such as those analyzed in this work.

Text mining is a powerful form of business intelligence that is used increasingly to inform organizational decisions. Current text mining algorithms rely heavily on the lexical, syntactic, structural, and semantic features of text to extract meaning and insight for decision making. Although semantic analysis is a useful approach to meaning extraction, pragmatics suggests that a more accurate meaning of text can be extracted by examining the context in which the text is recorded. Given that massive amounts of textual data can be drawn from multiple and diverse sources, accounting for context is increasingly important. A conceptual model is provided to explain how concepts from pragmatics can improve existing text mining algorithms to provide more accurate information for decision making. Reversing the pragmatic process of meaning expression could lead to improved text mining algorithms. The theoretical process model developed herein can provide insight into the development and refinement of text mining algorithms that draw from diverse sources.

The selectivity and productivity of traditional and modern extraction techniques generally depend on selecting the critical input parameters, knowing the nature of plant-based samples, the structure of bioactive compounds, and good scientific skills. This work aims to discuss the recent advances in supercritical fluid extraction techniques, especially supercritical carbon dioxide, along with the fundamental principles for extracting bioactive compounds from natural plant materials such as herbs, spices, aromatic and medicinal plants.

Contents of total polyphenols, condensed tannins and proanthocyanidins, and their stability to various pH values and temperatures were studied in Mexican blueberry, cuautecomate fruit, garambullo fruit, aubergine, coffee pulp and residues of black grapes. Several aqueous extracts, obtained through a one-pass-extraction process, were analyzed using liquid chromatography in order to quantify the condensed tannin (proanthocyanidin) content responsible for their antioxidant activity and colour. All tested samples included high proanthocyanidin contents demonstrating that these Mexican fruits and vegetables are good sources of natural antioxidants, and they all could be considered as excellent functional foods due to their bioactivity measured as the condensed tannin level.

Squalene (SQ) is a natural compound, a precursor of various hormones in animals and sterols in plants. It is considered a molecule with pharmacological, cosmetic, and nutritional potential. Scientific research has shown that SQ reduces skin damage by UV radiation, LDL levels, and cholesterol in the blood, prevents the suffering of cardiovascular diseases, and has antitumor and anticancer effects against ovarian, breast, lung, and colon cancer. The inclusion of SQ in the human diet is recommended without causing health risks; however, its intake is low due to the lack of natural sources of SQ and efficient extraction methods which limit its commercialization. Biotechnological advances have developed synthetic techniques to produce SQ; nevertheless, yields achieved are not sufficient for global demand for industrial or food supplement purposes. The effect on the human body is one of the scientific issues still to be addressed; few research studies have been developed with SQ from seed or vegetable sources to use it in the food sector even though squalene was discovered more than half a century ago. The aim of this review is to provide an overview of SQ to establish research focus with special reference to plant sources, extraction methods, and uses.

Advances in natural language processing and information extraction have increased the importance of large-scale knowledge bases in complex applications, resulting in scalable information extraction from semi-structured and unstructured heterogeneous data sources on the Web, and the detection of entities and relationships; It enabled the automatic creation of prominent knowledge bases in this field such as DbPedia, YAGO, NELL, Freebase, Probase, Google Knowledge Vault, IBM Watsons, which contain millions of semantic relationships between hundreds of thousands of entities, and displaying the created information in machine-readable format.
