AbstractThe special education teaching profession has experienced longstanding problems with shortages of qualified teaching staff and with high turnover rates of these staff. A variety of issues are related to these problems, including the nature of the support that early career special education teachers receive. In this case study research, the use of external mentoring support to two early career special education teachers in their first year of teaching was examined. This mentoring support was provided by an experienced special educator who did not work at the teachers' schools. The results suggest that external forms of mentoring support may offer important advantages over traditional, site-based forms of support.

Transnational actors are critical for financing programs and generating awareness around climate change adaptation in cities. However, it is unclear whether transnational support actually enables more authority over adaptation actions and whether outcomes address wide-ranging development needs. In this article, I compare experiences from three cities in India—Surat, Indore, and Bhubaneswar—and link local political agency over adaptation with their supporting transnational funders. I find that adaptation governance involves powers of agency over directing bureaucratic practices, public finance, spatial strategies, and institutional culture. A city’s ability to exert these powers then yields different patterns of adaptation. However, political agency is circumscribed by a combination of historical political economic constraints and emerging transnational resources that promote specific forms of political meaning and procedures. The presence of external support therefore paradoxically constrains the governance autonomy of cities. This opens up new opportunities for development dependency—that is, ones that mirror neoliberal critiques of foreign aid—within the global marketplace for climate finance.

Abstract:
Relevance. A new wave-like combined (complex) coating design for large-span buildings - a cylinder-plate-cable-stayed roof, combining three types of structures: a cylindrical shell of zero Gaussian curvature, plate and cable-stayed (hanging) roofs are presented. This combination of structures and materials for roof large areas was not chosen by chance. The cable works in tension with its entire cross section only, and the cylindrical shell and plate work in two (longitudinal and transverse) planes. In combination with external influence, they create the necessary design strength, taking into account, at the same time, a rational choice of materials (steel and reinforced concrete). New architectural and constructive solutions of a large-span building with a cylinder-plate-cable-stayed roof are proposed taking into account the different geometric shapes of the external support contour in a form of a semicircle, semiellipse, etc. The aim of the work is to analyze the influence of the external support contour (semicircle, semiellipse, and other forms) on the spatial work of internal forces in the combined cylinder-plate-cable-stayed roof of a large-span building. Methods. Results of static numerical analysis of spatial models of large-span buildings with different types of external supporting contour in the centralized roofs were made in the FEMAP with NX NAS-TRAN software package. This complex belongs to the CAE - class which implements the finite element method (FEM) and allows on the basis of the physical and geometric nonlinearity of the deformation of structures. Results. Calculation study carried out comparative numerical analysis of the stress-strain state of a complex cylinder-plate-cable-stayed roof with different outlines of the support contours on the effect of vertical loads. This determines their rational choice given due consideration to the total cost and useful area of the building. The results of calculating large-span buildings with cylinder-plate-cable-stayed roofs for horizontal (wind) load, on the basis of determination of aerodynamic coefficients, are supposed to be published in the next article.

Abstract:
We present a variational formulation of electrodynamics using de Rham even and odd differential forms. Our formulation relies on a variational principle more complete than the Hamilton principle and thus leads to field equations with external sources and permits the derivation of the constitutive relations. We interpret a domain in space-time as an odd de Rham 4-current. This permits a treatment of different types of boundary problems in an unified way. In particular we obtain a smooth transition to the infinitesimal version by using a current with a one point support.

Abstract:
During the research theoretical provisions on the external economic safety at the national and supranational levels in the conditions of integration are added. In article the problems in agricultural production development leading to emergence of threats to security of member states of EEU are systematized. On the example of development of subsector of gardening the dynamics of the prices of products of a ploovodstvo, import of landing material and products of fruit growing is shown. The revealed threats can lead to closing of the markets for the Russian agricultural products that limits achievement of target values of volume of export. The directions of support of export of agricultural products in the EEU countries, the used financial and non-financial instruments of support are analysed. For creation of equal conditions of managing agricultural producers in EEU need to unify forms and methods of the state support on pricing, insurance, subsidizing, investment and to improve them. In the conclusion in relation to subsectors of agriculture measures for decrease in level of unauthorized export, the state support of purchase only of domestic breeding and selection production, strengthening of control of an epizootic situation and quarantine measures, to regulation of seasonal deliveries of products are proposed.

Abstract:
Introduction. The article is based on the findings collected by monitoring the Russian Сore Shared Research Facilities (CSRF) and Large-Scale Research Facilities (LSRF). The monitoring is carried out annually by RIEPL specialists on behalf of the Ministry of Education and Science of Russia. The author suggests that the CSRFs and LSRFs sponsored by the state under the federal target programme Research and Development in Priority Areas of Development in Science and Technology in Russia for 2014-2021 stand to deliver high performance across the key indicators, namely the number of external users, value of the work performed for their benefit, and actual workload on research equipment in the interests of external users. Monitoring Tools. The empirical basis of the study is the reporting data for 2014-2020, obtained from CSRFs and LSRFs representatives through the use of the web forms on the portal http://ckp-rf.ru. Results. In the group of sponsored CSRFs, the high growth rate in the number of external users and the average value of the work completed was due to the expansion of the range of services through the use of equipment purchased under the Federal Target Programme. The growth rate of the actual workload proved to be lower compared to the other groups. In the group of sponsored LSRFs, only the actual workload values showed some growth. The growth rate in the number of external users was lower compared to the non-sponsored facility group; the growth rate in the value of work performed did not change from the 2014 baseline. It is, therefore, concluded that there is a need to abandon the competitive financing of shared use infrastructure in favour of targeted financing. Conclusion. The results may be useful in assessing the state of the Russian research infrastructure and divising guidelines for its continued support.

Abstract:
Abstract This article analyzes the success factors for external engagement aimed at fostering peace in conflict-affected states. It focuses on a set of three factors that have been under-researched so far: the strategic prioritization between stability and democracy, the degree of coordination, and the mode of interaction. We compare international engagement in six countries—Burundi, Kenya, Kyrgyzstan, Nepal, Senegal, and Timor-Leste. These countries all struggled with violent conflict and experienced a democratic transition in the period 2000–2014. We use an innovative approach to assess the impact of external engagement by analyzing twenty critical junctures in the domestic political processes of these countries mainly linked to elections, constitution-writing processes, and peace agreements, as well as disarmament, demobilization, and reintegration. Based on over 300 interviews, we find that prioritizing stability over democratization is problematic, good international coordination has positive effects, and preferring cooperative forms of interaction over coercion is mostly but not always useful. In discussing these general features of international support, this article contributes to the broader discussion of factors that explain the impact external actors can have on transformative political processes after conflict.

The article is devoted to the analysis of the specifics of PR support for the "third mission" of the university. The paper considers the forms and methods of PR-support, outlines the prospects for the development of this direction of PR. Also, the generally accepted models of building public relations as basic for the implementation of PR-support for the activities of universities are also characterized. Highlighting internal (university staff, students, internal units) and external (with stakeholders at different levels) communications of modern universities, the importance of distinguishing external and internal PR tools for building communication is shown. Special emphasis is placed on characterizing the prospects for the development of PR support for the socially significant activity of universities, their involvement in the activities of communities of different levels.

Abstract:
Despite the high level of interest in open data, little research has evaluated how municipal government evaluates the success of their open data programs. This research presents results from interviews with eight Canadian municipal governments that point to two approaches to evaluation: internal and external. Internal evaluation looks for use within the data generating government, and for support from management and council. External evaluation tracks use by external entities, including citizens, private sector, or other government agencies. Three findings of this work provide guidance for the development of open data evaluation metrics. First, approaches to tracking can be both passive, via web metrics, and active, via outreach activities to users. Second, value of open data must be broadly defined, and extend beyond economic valuations. Lastly, internal support from management or council and the contributions of many organization employees towards the production of open data are important forms of self-evaluation of open data programs.

The main focus here is the paleobiogeography and paleoecology of Mesozoic-Cenozoic Brachiopoda, mostly the forms referred to as articulated brachiopods. These are the forms I have worked on primarily for the past two decades. To put these creatures in context some attention should be paid to their evolutionary developments during this time (Fig. 1). The articulated brachiopods that continued into the Mesozoic from the Paleozoic are the rhynchonellides (internally with two processes or prongs, crura, to support the lophophore, Fig. 2.1; examples of external morphology shown in Figs. 3.1–3.5, 4.1); the terebratulides with a brachidium in the form of a loop to support the lophophore (“short-looped” in the Terebratulidina, Figs. 2.2, 2.3, 3.6–3.8, 4.2–4.5; “long-looped” in the Terebratellidina, Figs. 2.4, 2.5, 3.9–3.13); and two forms with a spiral lophophore support, the athyridides and spiriferides (these latter two both become extinct during the Mesozoic; Figs. 2.6, 2.7, 3.14–3.16). The thecideides are micromorphic, cryptic, articulated brachiopods (Fig. 3.17) that have much-debated origins (Baker, 1990; Jaecks, 2000).

Abstract:
The external-Support Vector Machine (SVM) clustering algorithm clusters data vectors with no a priori knowledge of each vector's class. The algorithm works by first running a binary SVM against a data set, with each vector in the set randomly labeled, until the SVM converges. It then relabels data points that are mislabeled and a large distance from the SVM hyperplane. The SVM is then iteratively rerun followed by more label swapping until no more progress can be made. After this process, a high percentage of the previously unknown class labels of the data set will be known. With sub-cluster identification upon iterating the overall algorithm on the positive and negative clusters identified (until the clusters are no longer separable into sub-clusters), this method provides a way to cluster data sets without prior knowledge of the data's clustering characteristics, or the number of clusters.

Abstrakt   Titel: Säljstöd Nivå: Kandidatuppsats Författare: Fredrik Palmé och Niclas Östlin Handledare: Jens Eklinder Frick och Jonas Molin Datum: 2015 - januari   Syfte: Tidigare forskning har visat att det finns lite eller ingen interaktion mellan säljstödsstrukturerna Self-Support, Core-Team Support och External-Support. Syftet med denna studie är därför att öka vår förståelse kring säljstödsstrukturer och se om det finns ett samspel mellan dem och om de kan kombineras, samt öka förståelsen för de fyra underliggande dimensionernas (workload, complexity, prequalification och customization) påverkan på valet av säljstöd. Metod: Studien är designad som en fallstudie med en kvalitativ ansats och ett hermeneutiskt perspektiv. Den teoretiska referensramen samlades in med hjälp av deduktion och det empiriska materialet samlades in genom semi-konstruerade intervjuer.  Resultat och slutsats: Studien indikerar att det finns ett konstant samspel mellan de tre olika säljstödsstrukturerna. Valet av säljstöd beror  på säljarens upplevelser av de fyra dimensionerna och Self-Support, Core-team support och External-support är ofta kombinerade för att erbjuda det mest lämpliga stödet vid rätt tidpunkt.  Förslag till vidare forskning: Eftersom ett av företagen var under omstrukturering och led av viss personalbrist, finns det möjligtvis en skillnad i appliceringen av säljstöd i ett företag som har lämplig mängd personal. Det vore även intressant att se vilken påverkan kommunikationen i ett mer centraliserat företag hade haft på valet av säljstöd.  Uppsatsen bidrag: Studiens bidrag är den ökade förståelsen kring samspelet mellan olika säljstödsstrukturer. Unstructured textual data is rapidly growing and practitioners from diverse disciplines are expe- riencing a need to structure this massive amount of data. Topic modeling is one of the most used techniques for analyzing and understanding the latent structure of large text collections. Probabilistic graphical models are the main building block behind topic modeling and they are used to express assumptions about the latent structure of complex data. This dissertation address four problems related to drawing structure from high dimensional data and improving the text mining process. Studying the ebb and flow of ideas during critical events, e.g. an epidemic, is very important to understanding the reporting or coverage around the event or the impact of the event on the society. This can be accomplished by capturing the dynamic evolution of topics underlying a text corpora. We propose an approach to this problem by identifying segment boundaries that detect significant shifts of topic coverage. In order to identify segment boundaries, we embed a temporal segmentation algorithm around a topic modeling algorithm to capture such significant shifts of coverage. A key advantage of our approach is that it integrates with existing topic modeling algorithms in a transparent manner; thus, more sophisticated algorithms can be readily plugged in as research in topic modeling evolves. We apply this algorithm to studying data from the iNeighbors system, and apply our algorithm to six neighborhoods (three economically advantaged and three economically disadvantaged) to evaluate differences in conversations for statistical significance. Our findings suggest that social technologies may afford opportunities for democratic engagement in contexts that are otherwise less likely to support opportunities for deliberation and participatory democracy. We also examine the progression in coverage of historical newspapers about the 1918 influenza epidemic by applying our algorithm on the Washington Times archives. The algorithm is successful in identifying important qualitative features of news coverage of the pandemic. Visually convincing results of data mining algorithms and models is crucial to analyzing and driving conclusions from the algorithms. We develop ThemeDelta, a visual analytics system for extracting and visualizing temporal trends, clustering, and reorganization in time-indexed textual datasets. ThemeDelta is supported by a dynamic temporal segmentation algorithm that integrates with topic modeling algorithms to identify change points where significant shifts in topics occur. This algorithm detects not only the clustering and associations of keywords in a time period, but also their convergence into topics (groups of keywords) that may later diverge into new groups. The visual representation of ThemeDelta uses sinuous, variable-width lines to show this evolution on a timeline, utilizing color for categories, and line width for keyword strength. We demonstrate how interaction with ThemeDelta helps capture the rise and fall of topics by analyzing archives of historical newspapers, of U.S. presidential campaign speeches, and of social messages collected through iNeighbors. ThemeDelta is evaluated using a qualitative expert user study involving three researchers from rhetoric and history using the historical newspapers corpus. Time and location are key parameters in any event; neglecting them while discovering topics from a collection of documents results in missing valuable information. We propose a dynamic spatial topic model (DSTM), a true spatio-temporal model that enables disaggregating a corpus's coverage into location-based reporting, and understanding how such coverage varies over time. DSTM naturally generalizes traditional spatial and temporal topic models so that many existing formalisms can be viewed as special cases of DSTM. We demonstrate a successful application of DSTM to multiple newspapers from the Chronicling America repository. We demonstrate how our approach helps uncover key differences in the coverage of the flu as it spread through the nation, and provide possible explanations for such differences. Major events that can change the flow of people's lives are important to predict, especially when we have powerful models and sufficient data available at our fingertips. The problem of embedding the DSTM in a predictive setting is the last part of this dissertation. To predict events and their locations across time, we present a predictive dynamic spatial topic model that can predict future topics and their locations from unseen documents. We showed the applicability of our proposed approach by applying it on streaming tweets from Latin America. The prediction approach was successful in identify major events and their locations.

Abstract:
This thesis develops an original notion of 'support' as a critical lens through which to investigate forms of display and the structures that sustain them; it is based on a multi-year art project consisting of ten exhibitions whose overall title is Support Structure. The notion of support is examined as the physical, economic, social, and political structures that are art’s conditions of possibility, and this investigation is undertaken theoretically and historically, as well as through the art practice. The history of art continues to separate artworks from their display. This thesis argues that display is not only an essential element of interpretation and exhibition, but is intrinsic to artworks themselves, and is part of their coming into being. It shows that contrary to most understandings, display is not something done to already existing and fully defined objects, but is itself a transformative process, albeit one that often remains invisible. This thesis asks whether any object can be separated from how it is shown, repaired, treated, classified, owned and valued. Its answer is negative: engaging with these very processes reveals the operations that determine the nature of the object, and the conditions under which it is and can be recognised as such, the apparatuses of visibility that I have come to designate as ‘support structures’. In Support, the thesis title, designates its subject and its methodology as a critical operative concept, which articulates the main proposition as practice: there can be no discourse on support, only discourse in support. The practice outlined in this thesis consists of the invention of structures and infrastructures of support in several different contexts and thus the structure of the thesis is designed to function as a series of supporting texts.

Research on contemporary sexism suggests that sexism has many different forms and they influence women differently. Evidence shows that women who experience subtle forms of sexism (e.g., modern and benevolent sexism) feel anxious and less competent, yet are less likely to identify these forms of sexism as prejudice against women. Because research suggests that social support is related to better psychological outcomes, we hypothesized that higher levels of perceived social support would be associated with better psychological outcomes among female participants who experienced sexism. In addition, receiving a supportive message after experiencing sexism would buffer the negative psychological effects of sexism, and thus the participants would perform better on a problem-solving task. However, the results only partially supported the hypotheses. Higher levels of perceived social support were indeed associated with better psychological outcomes, but participants who experienced sexism did not differ significantly from those who did not experience sexism regarding psychological outcomes. Further, receiving social support after experiencing sexism did not produce significant improvements on the problem-solving task, though participants who experienced modern sexism did report an increase in hostile affect if they did not receive social support. Possible reasons for the findings are discussed.

Розроблено комплекс понять інноваційної сприйнятливості, в тому числі "первинна інноваційна сприйнятливість", "вторинна інноваційна сприйнятливість", "корпоративна інноваційна сприйнятливість", "багаторівнева інноваційна сприйнятливість". Abstract The situation of a rotor-hydrodynamic bearing system in external flexible damped support is more complicated than that discussed before in Part I but it can become an alternative means to improve the stability of the rotor system. A model for both vertical and horizontal analysis is built first. Then, the analytical study on the vertical rotor is conducted. The results show that there might be up to four threshold speeds in this configuration that form a consecutive regional pattern taken turns by stable or unstable regions. Furthermore, the numerical calculation by MATLAB is carried out to obtain the results of the horizontal system. The stability maps for various parametric configurations are presented. It has been shown that the value of support damping has a strong effect on the first several lower threshold speeds. But it has little effect on the last top threshold speed which is mainly determined by the portion of journal mass. Within a certain range of external damping value, the first several regions of instability can be reduced or eradicated. As far as the entire stability map is concerned, there is an optimum range of value for support damping that can make the rotor have only one top threshold speed over the entire running speed range. When the support stiffness is increased, the system stability map becomes narrow which means a small support stiffness is good for broadening the range of optimum external damping.

Railway system operation is a very complicated task and must be supported by the coordination of several systems including engineering, transportation, locomotive maintenance and management, ticket system and passengers service, etc. Ideally, a modern railway enterprise information system should be an integrated, consisted, and site-opened database to support railway system operation. However, multiple isolated applications instead of one integrated enterprise information system are often formed due to historical factors such as independent departments, budgetary constraint and application requirements diversification. Take Taiwan Railways Administration (TRA) as an example, four major departments have their own support systems and databases that store critical planning and operational data. Those systems are isolated and can hardly communicate with each other. As a result, most cross-systems information analyses or data reference for decision making are done manually, which significantly affect the organizational efficiency of TRA. To address the aforementioned issues, a railway decision support platform (RDSP) for integrating the legacy systems (databases) is proposed in this paper. RDSP is designed to be a railway enterprise information system that supports the critical functions of data warehouse and decision support. Furthermore, RDSP is built by integrating the existing legacy systems rather than by building it from scratch. A data bridging system (HDBS) including four modules are design and implemented, input module for connecting the external data sources, output module for exporting integrated report or dumping data by predefined criteria for other systems, configuration module with a web-based user interface for setting up the periodic operations of data input or output tasks, and DB connection module for connecting external databases. Various types of railway system data are designed in RDSP schema and collected, including facilities, timetable, train services records, tickets, centralized traffic control (CTC) system records, and automatic train protection (ATP) system records. RDSP provides a system framework to integrate many isolated island-style databases that currently exist in TRA, and can form a cross-enterprise database that serves as the primary and only data platform. To demonstrate the efficacy of the RDSP, a spatiotemporal ticket-selling analysis report, a train delay cause analysis report, and a timetable planning software (TrainWorld) are designed on top of it. In the future, RDSP will play a major supportive role in infrastructure maintenance, operations, decision support, and planning.

[The final form of this paper was published in the journal Issues in Informing Science and Information Technology.] Project work forms a large part in work undertaken by graduates when they enter the workforce, so projects are used in higher education to prepare students for their working lives and to enable students to apply creativity in their studies as they present a solution to a problem, using technical skills they have learned in different units of study. Projects, both at work and in higher education, may be completed in teams, thus providing experience and the opportunity to develop team working skills. The team projects presented in this paper have been provided by external organisations, so that students work in a team on a real life problem, but with the support of their tutors, in the university setting. In this way the projects more closely resemble the sorts of problems they might encounter in the workplace, giving an experience that cannot be gained by working on tutor devised problems, because the teams have to communicate with an external client to analyse and solve an authentic problem. Over the three years that the Live Projects have been running, feedback indicates that the students gain employability skills from the projects, and the organisations involved develop links with the university and benefit from output from the projects. A number of suggestions for improving the administration of the Live Projects were suggested, such as providing clients with information on timescales and providing students with more guidance on managing the projects.

Abstract:
The most recent civil aircraft dominantly use composite structures such as in the ailerons. However, airworthiness authorities raise concerns about lightning strike damage and repairability if the aileron is made of composite material. Today, aerodynamic profiles of aircraft wings become more complex and challenging for designers who need adequate space to fit conventional “torque box” designs inside the wing surfaces. The aero-surfaces may become too shallow and curved in the trailing edge side of the wing which is highly exposed to edge impact and lightning strike damages. This paper presents a new design concept for Carbon Fiber Reinforced Plastic (CFRP) External Trailing Edge (CETE) structure for the trailing edge of the ailerons. CETE is attached to the main aileron torque box where the main load carrying composite spar, ribs and panels are located. The design objective of the CETE combines various important features such as better strength characteristics against lightning strike and edge impact, and easier repairability with a lighter aileron. This paper also discusses recurring and non-recurring costs and monetary benefits of the new design concept. The CETE concept is as simple as creating a secondary torque box on the trailing edge side of the aileron with two C-section parts; inner and outer parts of CETE. The inner part of CETE provides a secondary spar to the aileron to sustain the main torque box force flows and support the trailing edge panels. The main structural feature of CETE is to form a low loaded zone by its outer part which is located at the outermost region of the trailing edge where mechanical edge impact and lightning strike damages are frequently encountered. It is revealed during the lightning strike tests that, the resulting damages can be catastrophic and located at the trailing edge line where the metallic strips are located. In case of lightning strike damage on the CETE, the aileron is able to carry loads since the flows in the main torque box is minimally disturbed as the inner part of CETE is still intact while the outer part is damaged. Similarly, the damage after edge impact is trapped at the outer section of the CETE where the loads are minimized by CETE design. In case of a larger damage, CETE can be replaced easily instead of replacing the whole aileron which is cost effective in long term although the initial costs seem higher than the conventional designs.

Abstract Interaction between modes due to internal resonance has many applications in MEMS devices. In this paper, we investigate the modal interaction through 3 : 1 internal resonance of an electrostatically actuated microbeam with flexible supports in the form of rotational and transversal springs. The static displacement and the first three modal frequencies are obtained at the applied DC voltage by a reduced order model for a specified ratio of electrode gap and thickness. We then obtain the value of applied voltage for which 3 : 1 internal resonance exists for four different combinations of unequal end support stiffnesses. We calculate the coefficients of the coupled dynamical equations of first two modes for all the four cases and solve them by using numerical time integration and the method of multiple scales. We observe the interaction between the first and the second mode when each of the modes is independently excited by an external source. When the second mode is externally excited, interestingly, we also find that the undriven mode response amplitude is twice that of the driven mode.

<p>The Stovner Tower forms part of an activity park in the Stovner district of Oslo. The tower, providing a serpentine walkway through the treetops with a maximum height of 15m, is designed to be universally accessible. The route is based on a series of straight lengths connected with abrupt changes of direction. The 2m wide walkway has an overall length of 270m with a constant 1:15 slope. There are four intermediate horizontal platforms intended as relaxation and viewing areas, each one with different sizes. The principal deck structure is steel, formed from a central tube with a diameter of 762mm. The tube is made up of a series of 2m long straight segments which form the walkway change of direction. Steel cantilever ribs are located at 1.5m centres to support both the solid timber decking and the 1.3m high guardrail. The central steel tube is supported at multiple locations by tripod columns formed from GL32c glulam timber sections varying from 200x200mm to 350x350mm. The timber columns are anchored to the bedrock located close to the surface in this area. Steel walkway sections were shop welded in transportable lengths with bolted on- site connections. Timber to steel connections were also bolted. Steel is painted for corrosion protection. All timber, both solid C24 for decking and glulam columns, is treated for external use. A 3D SAP2000 FE model was used for verifications including a buckling analysis for the slender timber columns and a modal analysis to check for frequencies that would make the structure susceptible to pedestrian-induced vibrations.</p>

Abstract The present paper describes a numerical investigation of the mechanical response of externally-pressurized dented stainless-steel pipes, subjected to reverse cyclic axial loading. This is the first part of a large-scale project, between The University of Edinburgh and Tianjin University, and is motivated by the mechanical response of offshore pipelines, which are often subjected to cyclic loading during installation or operation. Under those cyclic loading conditions, the pipe may collapse because of accumulation of plastic deformations at the dent area. The paper describes a numerical simulation of the above physical problem, in an attempt to support experiments on 50mm-diameter stainless steel pipes, which are being performed at the laboratory facilities of Tianjin University. Pipe segments are subjected to reverse cyclic axial loading (tension and compression), in the presence of external pressure. Prior to the application of external pressure and axial load, the pipes are locally dented, in the form of “smooth dent” or “local ovalization”, so that collapse initiates at the dent area. The numerical simulation is aimed at examining some aspects of pipeline behavior to support and complement the experimental observations. The simulation is conducted using rigorous finite element tools, which account for large displacement and nonlinear material. Towards this purpose, an advanced material model is employed, capable of describing the phenomenological aspects of material response under cyclic loading, such as the accumulation of plastic strain and ratcheting. In the first part of the analysis, the local ovalization (denting) process is simulated. Subsequently, the pipes are subjected to uniform constant external pressure and, keeping the pressure level constant, monotonic or cyclic axial loading is applied until collapse. The numerical results are aimed at identifying the interrelation between the magnitude of the applied loading and the number of loading cycles to failure. The results are presented in diagrams of axial displacement, ovalization and local strain versus the corresponding number of cycles to failure, for specific levels of external pressure.

Flow measurements were made prior to shunt placement, and with the shunt open and closed, to measure the influence of altered external iliac artery flow on the distribution to the infrarenal abdominal vessels. Similar experiments were carried out to relate the flow rates in the external iliac arteries to those in the femoral arteries, which are more accessible. These results permit reasonable estimates to be made of infrarenal hemodynamics in the pig, at baseline and with the shunt opened or closed, from only the flow rates measured at the two femoral arteries. These estimates can then form the basis for global or detailed descriptions of shear stress distributions in the abdominal vessels.

Abstract:
For the journal bearing under dynamic loading or under large external excitation condition, the oil film will not be a simple form as normal divided into continue oil film area and cavitation area. Because of squeeze effect, the boundary of oil film changes dynamically and oil film pressure shows more complex. As reviewed in [1], also there are some “cavitation algorithms” [2,3] developed, the oil film performance under dynamic loading remains unclear. For the research on nonlinear analysis of rotor-bearing system, one of the important work is to obtain oil film performance model under large external excitation. In order to investigate cavitation phenomenon, especially how cavitation changing and how much tensile stress oil films can support, a parallel-plate oscillatory squeeze film test-rig was built where a high-speed CCD was used to capture the development of cavitation, and synchronously the oil film pressure and the oscillatory displacement were measured [4]. A new cavitation model also was proposed [1]. In this paper, the new model will be validated with the experimental data. Some phenomenon also was investigated theoretically with new model.
