This study evaluated the experience of the Agroecology group at the Academic Unit of Garanhuns/Federal Rural University of Pernambuco (UAG/UFRPE). This campus was the first academic unit from the Federal Program for Expansion and Decentralization of Higher Education Institutions in Brazil (REUNI). It was also the first campus established by UFRPE in the country side of Pernambuco State. The new unit is considered an important tool to foster local development in the ‘Agreste Meridional’ region of Pernambuco State. The main characteristic of this study was to identify sustainable development through the actions of the Agroecology Group from UAG/UFRPE by measuring educational, social, and economical development as well as professional qualification. The research was classified as a case study where qualitative and exploratory aspects were addressed. The survey was performed by analyzing the documents from the Agroecology group records. Methods used in this assessment included reports, systematization of participatory diagnostics, semi-structured interviews, direct observations, and bibliographic research. The dissertation was organized in for chapters, reporting its discussions under the framework of University rural extension; family farming; agroecology and sustainable local development. Confronting the findings of the research with the empirical contextualization of this study allowed identifying the difficulties found by the Agroecology Group, such as the infrastructure and the responsibility from both local and state governmental agencies, with the support of the University. From the intellectual build-up and humanistic perspective for the family farmers, the Agroecology Group delivered the expected results by promoting the continuation of the true process of sustainable development and agroecology by fostering local culture and endogenous knowledge.

Abstract:
Rural Extension in Brazil has passed through many transformations in its way of acting and developing the work with farmers. The extension methods are extremely related to these transformations and, in a large extent, since the creation of the official services of Rural Extension, they arethe identity of the extensionist institutionsworker in the country. This study has analyzed the use of different methods of rural extension by the Empresa de Pesquisa de Agropecuária e Extensão Rural Santa Catarina (Epagri). The research was developed through the case study of the Unidade de GestãoTécnica 5, composed by 31 cities, located in the region called Alto Vale do Itajaí SC, with a cuali-quantative approach. The results point out that, in relation to the nature of the work done by extensionists, there is a predominance of office activities over field work, determined, mainly, by the demand of the paper work generated by governmental programs. The data demonstrated that about 50% of the farmers and 40% of the actions developed are associated to back activities, showing that a big part of the technician`s effort is associated to the demand of governmental programs. Considering the nature of the work methods, it was founda predominance of individual approach technics, they constitute 94.54% of the activities unfolded, existing among them a predominance of the office visiting. According to the technicians‟ point of view, the predominance of the individual approach is related to the nature of the work that they do and, the changes implemented in the Epagri managementdid not produced the expected effects in the increasing use of group methods.

Abstract:
Imagine how you would react if you learned that your favorite singer was recording new music in a style far from that which you have come to love. Perhaps you would disapprove. Then you might react like many Porsche consumers did when they learned that “their” brand would start producing sports utility vehicles. They are not without peers. In fact, how would you respond if a favored brand would launch, say, a chain of coffee shops? Some people would resist such an idea. These scenarios illustrate how strong consumer-brand bonds may complicate attempts to extend brands into new businesses. The research presented in the thesis explores this connection, towards a better understanding of the stakes facing both companies and consumers. It is an inquiry into tensions of extensions. The thesis comprises four published studies. Three explore how consumers with close ties to a brand react to brand extension. They acknowledge that consumers who come close to a brand potentially become stakeholders with opinions on efforts to change the products and marketing of that brand. They suggest that the implications of combining brand extension and strong consumer bonds can be substantial. The fourth study considers how the financial implications in particular can be analyzed and communicated within organizations. The findings show how brand extension can be an important event in a longer relationship with core consumers. This perspective is easily obscured when concentrating only on the perceptions of “the average consumer”. The thesis highlights symbolic and experiential aspects. It offers a closer look at such things as consumer identity, emotional reactions, and expression of criticism, and the findings should inform communication strategies and decision-making related to brand extensions.

Balasubramaniam, Dharini. "Extension polymorphism." Thesis, University of St Andrews, 1998. http://hdl.handle.net/10023/13495.

Full text
Abstract:
Any system that models a real world application has to evolve to be consistent with its changing domain. Dealing with evolution in an effective manner is particularly important for those systems that may store large amounts of data such as databases and persistent languages. In persistent programming systems, one of the important issues in dealing with evolution is the specification of code that will continue to work in a type safe way despite changes to type definitions. Polymorphism is one mechanism which allows code to work over many types. Inclusion polymorphism is often said to be a model of type evolution. However, observing type changes in persistent systems has shown that types most commonly exhibit additive evolution. Even though inclusion captures this pattern in the case of record types, it does not always do so for other type constructors. The confusion of subtyping, inheritance and evolution often leads to unsound or at best, dynamically typed systems. Existing solutions to this problem do not completely address the requirements of type evolution in persistent systems. The aim of this thesis is to develop a form of polymorphism that is suitable for modelling additive evolution in persistent systems. The proposed strategy is to study patterns of evolution for the most generally used type constructors in persistent languages and to define a new relation, called extension, which models these patterns. This relation is defined independent of any existing relations used for dealing with evolution. A programming language mechanism is then devised to provide polymorphism over this relation. The polymorphism thus defined is called extension polymorphism. This thesis presents work involving the design and definition of extension polymorphism and an implementation of a type checker for this polymorphism. A proof of soundness for a type system which supports extension polymorphism is also presented.

Lewis, Edwin C. "The Attitudes of Extension Faculty Toward Globalizing Extension Programs: A Case Study of Virginia Cooperative Extension." Diss., Virginia Tech, 2006. http://hdl.handle.net/10919/26506.

Full text
Abstract:
Over the past several years, many state Cooperative Extension Services have taken inventory of their engagement with international issues, including barriers (real and perceived) to active participation in globalizing programs as well as staff needs for effective communication with diverse audiences. While Virginia Cooperative Extension (VCE) has actively involved 4-H youth in international exchange programs, they have not engaged in a coherent and proactive effort to globalize all program areas. The study purpose was to assess attitudes of VCE faculty toward globalizing their programming efforts. Also examined were information related to VCE facultyâ s current involvement in globally-focused activities and barriers to globalizing programming efforts. The survey instrument combined various sections of two surveys developed and employed by Barbara Ludwig in studies on Ohio Cooperative Extension. The web-based survey included four sections: 1) Employee Profile, 2) Involvement in International Activities, 3) Perception towards Global Issues, and 4) Perceived Barriers to Globalizing Extension Programs. The target audience included all VCE faculty members (N = 332). Two hundred six faculty members completed the on-line survey. This represents a return rate of 62%. Data revealed that 92% of the respondents were involved in international efforts within the past five years. On a scale of one to four, with four representing the highest level of engagement, campus administrators (mean = 2.66) and specialists (mean = 2.13) were the most involved in international programming effort; the least involved were the district directors (mean = 1.21). â Exchanged ideas with colleagues from other countriesâ and â hosted an international visitorâ were the top two activities performed by faculty. Data also revealed an attitude mean score of 2.9 on a scale from one to four, with four being the most positive. Campus administrators (mean = 3) were the most positive of the four position categories; agents were the least positive (mean = 2.86). Furthermore, the top two barriers to globalizing VCE programs, as identified by respondents, were â lack of financial supportâ and â not a programming priorityâ . Respondents also selected â Lack of timeâ as a major barrier.

Brown, Almeshia S. "An Assessment of Virginia Cooperative Extension's New Extension Agent Training Program." Diss., Virginia Tech, 2003. http://hdl.handle.net/10919/29890.

Full text
Abstract:
This study is an assessment of the New Extension Agent Training (NEAT) program in Virginia. Although new Extension agents have exceptional subject matter training, they often lack skills needed to be effective Extension professionals (Bennett, 1979). The NEAT program provides a way for new agents to receive hands-on experiences that will facilitate a smooth transition into their respective roles. There is currently no specific data that has the NEAT program. Therefore, an evaluation of the program by its participants to determine its importance and effectiveness may be utilized to enhance the effectiveness of the NEAT program. The survey utilized to collect data in the study was developed by the researcher. The instrument was put on a website where participants could access it during a given time frame. The population consisted of new Extension agents, training agents, and administrators who participated in the NEAT program and are currently employed by Virginia Cooperative Extension (VCE). Participants were asked to rate the importance and effectiveness of the NEAT program in facilitating new Extension agents' growth in a series of goals needed for a new agent to be proficient. These goals were then divided into eight competencies as outlined by National Policy Statement on Staff Training and Development (1968). Participants were asked to provide demographic information and suggestions that would be useful in designing future programs. Data were analyzed using SPSS. The data showed that communication was rated the most important competency while human development was considered the least important. The data related to the ratings of effectiveness of the NEAT program in relation to the eight competencies also demonstrated that respondents rated communication as the most effectively taught competency covered in the NEAT program, and human development as the least effectively taught competency. Significant differences among ratings by position in the NEAT program were measured at the 0.05 alpha level. Significant differences were observed both between new Extension agents and Extension administrators and between Extension training agents and Extension administrators were in the importance of a selected competency and the effectiveness of the NEAT program in teaching the some of the competencies.

Antei, Marco. "Extension de torseurs." Thesis, Lille 1, 2008. http://www.theses.fr/2008LIL10056/document.

Full text
Abstract:
The question we try to answer in this thesis is the following: let X be a relative scheme over a discrete valuation ring R and y' a G'-torsor over the generic fibre X' of X. Does it exist an R-group scheme G and a G-torsor Y over X whose generic fibre is isomorphic to the given torsor? We face this problem by means of the fundamental group scheme introduced by Nori for a reduced scheme X complete over a field and then generalized by Gasbarri for an irreducible and reduced scheme faithfully flat over a Dedekind scheme. We prove that the natural morphism f between the fundamental group scheme of X' and the generic fibre of the fundamental group scheme of X is always surjective for the fpqc topology. Moreover we prove that any torsor can be extended iff f is an isomorphism. The firstt two chapters of the thesis are devoted to an introduction of the objects used in the last two chapters. ln particular the tannakian definition of the fundamental group scheme and of the universal torsor of Nori are revisited. ln the third chapter a proof of the results mentioned before is given. The fourth chapter is devoted to a related question: let f be a morphism between two schemes Y and X over a field k.s.t. the direct image F of the structural sheaf of Y is essentially finite, is it possible to defme a Galois cIosure? We prove that the universal torsor associated to the sub-category of the category of essentially finite vector bundles generated by F is the desired Galois closure

Abstract:
Thesis (M.Arch.)--Massachusetts Institute of Technology, Dept. of Architecture, 1999.

Buildings, serve in the real world, inevitably acquire or become involved in new proposals of meanings all the time. Their identities and expressions are constantly under scrutiny in the tide of changes. This thesis, through the design of a building extension, intends to explore the art of architectural additions. As the design project, it will reexamine the design of Media Laboratory at Massachusetts Institute of Technology and subsequently proposes a design for the extension to the existing lab. The design of the lab was carried out by I.M. Pei & Partners in collaboration with a group of artists; a design move underlining the basic philosophy of the lab, integration of Arts and Media Technology. The Lab is located at the gateway of the MIT East Campus housing the MIT Council for the Arts, the Media Laboratory, and the List Visual Art Center. While Media Lab's success in producing high-end media technology is readily apparent, its critics still wonders on how much its current physical setting is actually supporting its success. Given the unique task of marrying Arts and media technology under a single roof, the building has, since the first unveiling of its design, coaxed extensive discussion about the design's appropriateness and workability. Not only did its Critics challenged the building's ability to accommodate the intended program, but also its role as a member of the greater MIT community when its introspective plan, a square implying its own center and focus, and defensive exterior appearance, composed mostly of opaque surface, seems to be isolating itself from its context. Furthermore, the lab's recent shift in research agenda from the abstraction of electronic content, the multimedia technology, to the overlapping of this technology with the physical world is posing new challenges to its existing lab layout. A reevaluation and transformation of the building, in the face of these challenges, is inevitable. Prior to proceeding with the design of the extension, some of the questions that this thesis will try to answer are: What are the values and flaws of the existing building. Is there room for improvement architecturally? Is the current lab layout supporting efficiently the various types of activities of the artists and the media scientists? How well is it promoting the collaboration between the artists and the scientists as its founders had intended? How is it supporting its role as the container of one of the premier public facility on campus, the List Visual Art Center? Architecturally, how to add to such a rigid and self-sufficient geometry? Finally, how should the new research agenda be accommodated spatially? The three main methods in conducting this project are: interviews with key informants to understand the value and flaws of the current building, architectural analysis and a study on how labs of this type work. From Urbanistic point of view, the new extension tries to integrate itself with the MIT campus in two-folds; the overall massing geometry of the campus, and the redefinition of public/shared open spaces. The underutilized open space will be activated and internal and circulation modified to best serve the interest of the facility.

This study sets the analysis of the social representations that residents of the community Sítio dos Pintos have on local development related to the extension policies of the Universidade Federal Rural de Pernambuco (UFRPE). The main purpose of this study is to understand the appropriations, opinions and subjectivities that the members of the community – located around the Universidade Federal Rural de Pernambuco (UFRPE), Recife-PE – have on the university according to the extension as a vector of local development. The theoretical framework emphasizes the categories: academic extension, local development, social capital and daily life. Thus, in the theoretical chapter, we consider the concepts of authors such as Freire (1983), Kunsch (1992) and Nogueira (2005), when it comes to academic extension. By relating academic extension to local development, we consider Oliveira (2001), Buarque (2002) and Jara (1998), followed by Bourdieu (1998), Putnam (2001) and Coleman (2001), whose theories on social capital complement the connections between the extension and local development. Secondly, we introduce the phenomenon of Social Representations considering the analysis of its first theoretical, Moscovici (1978, 2009), with the contribution of other authors. We approached the object of study, the community Sítio dos Pintos, through the development of relations with the daily life (Certeau, 2008) and community (Bauman, 2003; Peruzzi, 2006), besides the historic appeal (Chartier, 1988) and the importance to consider, even if briefly, the collective memory (Halbwachs, 1990) studied. On the next step, the methodology, with qualitative nature and based on social representations. The data collection was based on interviews with 30 residents, and the analysis were performed with the theoretical and methodological support of the Discurso do Sujeito Coletivo (DSC), developed by researchers at the Universidade de São Paulo – USP (LEFEVRE E LEFEVRE, 2010). With the support of the tool Qualiquantsoft, we analyzed the discourses that interpret the social representations of the residents of the Sítio dos Pintos on the site UFRPE. They reveal, among other findings, the faith on the neighboring institution, which can act, through the extension, on projects and actions that contribute to the local development.

Abstract:
Following concerns expressed by canegrowers in the Burdekin River Irrigation Area (BRIA) of Northern Queensland regarding rising groundwater and salinity the Department of Primary Industries instigated action to investigate and develop Best-On-Farm Water Management Practices. The purposes of this project were to improve landholder awareness of water use to maximise cane production while minimising the likelihood of salinity and changes in the groundwater balance, and to facilitate the development of soil and water management practices on a range of soils in the BRIA. The project lasted for 12 months, and this short duration affected research methodologies and techniques selected. Groups of farmers were organised, participation was good and useful outcomes resulted. These included: improved landholder awareness of the relationships between salinity, water use and groundwater; identification of a range of best practices; identification of social theories about water management practices; development of an extension model based on the value of indigenous knowledge; equality between government and farmers; examination of underlying assumptions in relation to water management by both government and farmers; identification of issues for future research and extension.

Abstract:
In this thesis extensions to the formalism of endoreversible thermodynamics for multi-extensity fluxes and chemical reactions are introduced. These extensions make it possible to model a great variety of systems which could not be investigated with standard endoreversible thermodynamics. Multi-extensity fluxes are important when studying processes with matter fluxes or processes in which volume and entropy are exchanged between subsystems. For including reversible as well as irreversible chemical reaction processes a new type of subsystems is introduced - the so called reactor. It is similar to endoreversible engines, because the fluxes connected to it are balanced. The difference appears in the balance equations for particle numbers, which contain production or destruction terms, and in the possible entropy production in the reactor. Both extensions are then applied to an endoreversible fuel cell model. The chemical reactions in the anode and cathode of the fuel cell are included with the newly introduced subsystem -- the reactor. For the transport of the reactants and products as well as the proton transport through the electrolyte membrane, the multi-extensity fluxes are used. This fuel cell model is then used to calculate power output, efficiency and cell voltage of a fuel cell with irreversibilities in the proton and electron transport. It directly connects the pressure and temperature dependencies of the cell voltage with the dissipation due to membrane resistance. Additionally, beside the listed performance measures it is possible to quantify and localize the entropy production and dissipated heat with only this one model

Abstract:

In the present paper we suggest the norm-preserving explicit operator for the extension of finite-element functions from boundaries of domains into the inside. The construction of this operator is based on the multilevel decomposition of functions on the boundaries and on the equivalent norm for this decomposition. The cost of the action of this operator is proportional to the number of nodes.

Abstract:
This dissertation examines subfunctors of Ext relative to covering (enveloping) classes and the theory of covering (enveloping) ideals. The notion of covers and envelopes by modules was introduced independently by Auslander-Smalø and Enochs and has proven to be beneficial for module theory as well as for representation theory. The first few chapters examine the subfunctors of Ext and their properties. It is showed how the class of precoverings give us subfunctors of Ext. Furthermore, the characterization of these subfunctors and some examples are given. In the latter chapters ideals, the subfunctors of Hom, are investigated. The definition of cover and envelope carry over to the ideals naturally. Classical conditions for existence theorems for covers led to similar approaches in the ideal case. Even though some theorems such as Salce’s Lemma were proven to extend to ideals, most of the theorems do not directly apply to the new case. It is showed how Eklof & Trlifaj’s result can partially be extended to the ideals generated by a set. In that case, one also obtains a significant result about the orthogonal complement of the ideal. We relate the existence theorems for covering ideals of morphisms by identifying the morphisms with objects in A2 (which is the category of all representations of 2-quiver by R-modules) and obtain a sufficient condition for the existence of covering ideals in a more general setting. We finish with applying this result to the class of phantom morphisms.

The thesis of this dissertation is that compilers can and should allow programmers to extend programming languages with new syntax, features, and restrictions by writing extension modules that act as plugins for the compiler. We call compilers designed around this idea extension-oriented. The central challenge in designing and building an extension-oriented compiler is the creation of extension interfaces that are simultaneously powerful, to allow effective extensions; convenient, to make these extensions easy to write; and composable, to make it possible to use independently-written extensions together. This dissertation proposes and evaluates extension-oriented syntax trees (XSTs) as a way to meet these challenges. The key interfaces to XSTs are grammar statements, a convenient, composable interface to extend the input parser; syntax patterns, a way to manipulate XSTs in terms of the original program syntax; canonicalizers, which put XSTs into a canonical form to extend the reach of syntax patterns; and attributes, a lazy computation mechanism to structure analyses on XSTs and allow extensions to cooperate. We have implemented these interfaces in a small procedural language called zeta. Using zeta, we have built an extension-oriented compiler for C called xoc and then 13 extensions to C ranging in size from 16 lines to 245 lines. To evaluate XSTs and xoc, this dissertation examines two examples in detail: a reimplementation of the programming language Alef and a reimplementation of the Linux kernel checker Sparse. Both of these examples consist of a handful of small extensions

Abstract:
This thesis deals with problems in interconnexion networks, which can be either multiprocessor networks or telecommunication networks. In particular we study how these networks can be extended without increasing the diameter. We give some results on the extension of known good networks, and propose some other ones, having good extensibility properties

Abstract:
Scientia Silvica extension series was started in 1997 by Karel Klinka, a silvics professor at the University of British Columbia. He saw the need for a friendly way of distributing current research results to the forestry community. Each extension pamphlet represents a 2-4 page summary of research findings in the field of forest ecology. Topics range from humus form and ecosystem classification to forest productivity, regeneration, stand structure, soil nutrient regimes, coarse woody debris, and plant diversity. Included in each summary is a reference to the more technical original report or scientific paper and contact information for those who wish further information. Also included in the series are several full colour comprehensive reports on ecosystem classification. All pamphlets and reports are in Adobe Acrobat (PDF) format for on-screen viewing or printing. Forest Renewal British Columbia provided the funding for this version of Scientia Silvica extension series.

This study intent to describe and analyze the relationship between extension and settlers, in the work of a cooperative that access public policies, specifically the Technical Assistance Program, the Social Environmental and Agrarian Reform - ATES, exclusively directed to the settlements, in the case studied, in the state of Rio de Janeiro. Rescuing the history and trajectory of the policies of Rural Extension in Brazil, are exposed the disputes over the form, content and extension of the mediation on rural extension, as well as the conflicts that underlie the different conceptions of action in the rural extension and development. The new theoretical and methodological references of Rural Extension, together with the guidelines of the National Technical Assistance and Rural Extension - PNATER, which ATES is in, print complex features and contradictory directions, sometimes in different conceptions that bring conflict on the mediation and intervention process in settlements. Using the literature on social mediation and action extension, along with types and forms assumed of the practice and their references of rural extension, we construct the theory that expose the dynamic that operate on the Technical Assistance and Rural Extension – “ATER”, served by the cooperative CEDRO – “Cooperativa de Projetos e Consultoria em Desenvolvimento Sustentável – LTDA”. Reflecting on issues that are in the practice of rural extension in settlements, especially on the forms and conceptualizations of participation, aim to deepen and enhance the debate on intervention on rural areas. The study is to outline the premises of the Observation participants, which has the characteristic of using the natural environment interactions as a data source. Were identified continuities and discontinuities along the extension process, exposing contradictions of the practice in rural extension and the action of professionals in conflict with the ideals, norms and guidelines and proposals of the documents and agreements about the politics Program ATES. Sought, by identifying the inclusion of actors interacting in rural action extension, exposing the dilemmas and conflicts that underlie an extension process, with its institutional limits, the direct paths of an ATER that falls within a wide, dynamic and qualified agrarian reform.

Abstract:
The study determined the level of agreement between ASEAs and their administrators and subject-matter specialists as to the competency areas considered most important to the effectiveness of the agents. The study also determined the specific items within the competency areas that ASEAs would like to have included in their in-service training. Selected demographic characteristics were collected to determine characteristics such as agents' age, race, gender, level of education, and years of experience. The population for this study consisted of 66 ASEAs, 49 administrators, and 18 subject-matter specialists employed by the North Carolina Cooperative Extension Service. Data were collected by mailing the questionnaire accompanied by a letter from the director of the North Carolina Cooperative Extension Service announcing the study and providing details on its nature, use of the data, and instructions for completing the questionnaire. The data were analyzed using the Statistical Package for the Social Sciences (SPSS-X). Frequencies and means were used to describe the research objectives. Demographics were surveyed using an instrument developed for that purpose by the researcher. Major findings included several items. In terms of importance, ASEAs, administrators, and specialists rated program planning highest. In rating the need for training, ASEAs, administrators, and specialists also rated program planning highest. Specific items in the program planning competency area that were rated important, 3.0 on a 4.0 scale, were the role of area agents, involving lay people, long-term program development, area agent programming, developing programs, and evaluation. The only important differences among groups--ASEAs, administrators, and specialists-~regarding specific items were in their ratings of the need for training of the items of history, philosophy, University USDA-partner, and county responsibilities in the general competency area of organization and administration. An important differences among groups was also observed in ratings of need for training in the program planning competency area for the specific item program planning. No other important differences were found. The majority of ASEAs held master's degrees. Over 50% of ASEAs had a tenure as ASEA of 5 years or less, and over 50% had a tenure with the Extension Service of 6 years or less. The majority of ASEAs were male; only 18% were female. The majority of ASEAs were Caucasian; only 5% were minorities. From the data gathered in this study, a proposed Area Specialized Extension Agent Development Institute was developed.

This is a survey of users of the Extension Information System of the Federal University of São Paulo (SIEX / UNIFESP), whose objective is to analyze the Extension Information System (SIEX) to register and accredit the programs and social projects of the Proec/Unifesp as an educational space for the academic community. The motivation for this work arose in view of the number of actions registered in SIEX / UNIFESP since its launch and the researcher's experience in mediating the contact between user-system. The methodological path covered the application of a questionnaire to the Coordinators of Programs and Social Projects and semi-structured interviews with Coordinators of Extension Chambers and Culture of Unifesp Campi. SIEX / Unifesp, implemented in 1999, has been rebuilt based on the demands and needs, responding to a national policy for the creation and sustainability of information systems that allow the dissemination, exchange and amplification of the Extension Actions, projects and programs. The results and analytical movements allow us to grasp an expanded understanding of university extension as a space for the production of knowledge and the construction of organic links between university and society. The significant experiences highlighted by Coordinators emphasized the exchange of knowledge, the encounter with the community, the sharing of practices and the valorization of dialogue as strategy and method. SIEX is an important space for information systematization and planning of actions, but it faces critical nodes in relation to the working conditions, adequacy to the different natures of extension projects and valorization by the academic community. This research contributes to the extension activities of UNIFESP by giving voice to the users of SIEX / UNIFESP, apprehending their perceptions and knowing their extensionist experiences and with SIEX / Unifesp, allowing for improvements and advances. By situating SIEX / Unifesp as an educational space, the present study generated as Products (1) SIEX / Unifesp User Manual and (2) SIEX/Unifesp Shared Discussion Proposal as an educational space.

Abstract:
The purpose of this study was to identify continuing education and training needs of aquaculture Extension agents, specialists, and program administrators on the list serve AQUA-EXT. Ten competency areas were evaluated regarding perceived importance, and need for continuing education or training. In addition, 14 resources on the Aquaculture Network Information Center (AquaNIC) website were evaluated from this population for frequency of use and recommended improvements. Lastly, demographic data were collected to determine possible relationships to continuing education and training needs. The survey population was the AQUA-EXT list serve membership (N = 223), of which 174 responded. AQUA-EXT is a Web based mail group established by the Cooperative State Research, Education, and Extension Service as a means of disseminating information to the Extension community with work and interest in aquaculture. Data were collected with an online survey conducted via the interactive and encrypted Web site www.survey.vt.edu. Upon completion, data were exported into, and analyzed via the Statistical Package for the Social Sciences (SPSS). A majority of Extension agents, specialists, and program administrators did not require significant continuing education or training to accomplish their work effectively. However, general agreement among the three groups was for continuing education in the areas of program evaluation, information technologies, and human development. Regarding the AquaNIC website, 52% of Extension agents, 71% of specialists, and 81% of program administrators reported having used AquaNIC, however, use was infrequent. Recommendations to enhance Web site utility focused on requests to update and incorporate more comprehensive and in-depth information for all resource areas. Demographics indicated that mean ages for Extension agents, specialists, and program administrators were 47.9, 50.5, and 51.5 years respectively. Sixty three percent of agents indicated having master's degrees, and 63% and 72% respectively of specialists and program administrators indicated having doctorates. Means for years in their present position were 13.4, 13.2, and 8.4 years respectively for Extension agents, specialists, and program administrators, and 16.6, 16.1, and 15.5 respectively regarding total years in Cooperative Extension or Sea Grant. No statistical relationships between demographics and continuing education and training needs for Extension specialists, specialists, and program administrators were found.

Abstract:
The thesis is concerned to some mathematical problems on minimal Lipschitz extensions. Chapter 1: We introduce some basic background about minimal Lipschitz extension (MLE) problems. Chapter 2: We study the relationship between the Lipschitz constant of 1-field and the Lipschitz constant of the gradient associated with this 1-field. We produce two Sup-Inf explicit formulas which are two extremal minimal Lipschitz extensions for 1-fields. We explain how to use the Sup-Inf explicit minimal Lipschitz extensions for 1-fields to construct minimal Lipschitz extension of mappings from Rm to Rn. Moreover, we show that Wells’s extensions of 1-fields are absolutely minimal Lipschitz extensions (AMLE) when the domain of 1-field to expand is finite. We provide a counter-example showing that this result is false in general. Chapter 3: We study the discrete version of the existence and uniqueness of AMLE. We prove that the tight function introduced by Sheffield and Smart is a Kirszbraun extension. In the realvalued case, we prove that the Kirszbraun extension is unique. Moreover, we produce a simple algorithm which calculates efficiently the value of the Kirszbraun extension in polynomial time. Chapter 4: We describe some problems for future research, which are related to the subject represented in the thesis

Full text
Abstract:
This thesis is an attempt to understand the essential properties of concrete objects. The underlying motivation of this investigation is the hope that by understanding essential properties we will be in a better position to construct a satisfactory metaphysical account of the things that populate the world around us. The initial chapter introduces two questions that this thesis will attempt to answer. The first, 'what are essential properties?' is the Analysis Question. Answering it occupies chapters two through five. The second, 'what essential properties are there?' is the Extension Question. This is dealt with in the final three chapters. Chapter two provides the beginnings of an answer to the Analysis question, introducing the modal analysis of essential properties. Eight ways modality and essentiality might be related are raised. Of these, two entail the modal analysis. By eliminating the undesirable six, justification for the modal analysis could be provided. In the remainder of the chapter, five of the six are quickly dismissed. Chapter three is an examination of Fundamentalism. Focusing upon the views of E.J. Lowe and Kit Fine, I argue that there are modal facts which cannot be grounded upon essence facts and that certain modal concepts are employed in the construction of the Fundamentalist account. Consequently, Fundamentalism cannot succeed in grounding modality, and therefore cannot be the correct way to understand essentiality. This concludes the argument by elimination, thereby justifying accepting the modal analysis. Chapter four explores the modal analysis. After distinguishing between various formulations, it is argued that an existence-dependent version of the modal analysis is best. An objection by McLeod concerning contingent existence and essential properties is then dealt with, setting the stage for a more troubling objection from Kit Fine. Fine argues that all forms of the modal analysis 'get the essential properties wrong', relying upon a series of example properties, including the relation between Socrates and {Socrates}. After breaking down Fine's argument, the remainder of the chapter concerns examining and dismissing several bad responses to Fine's argument, including attempts by Della Rocca and Gorman. In chapter five I advance a new response to Fine which centres upon appealing to the sparse/abundant property distinction. Incorporating this distinction into the modal criteria, I demonstrate that a form of the modal analysis can avoid Fine's attack. I then conclude that this suitably modified modal analysis is an excellent answer to the Analysis Question. The remaining three chapters are part of an attempt to answer the Extension Question. Chapter six critically examines Wiggins' sortal essentialism, the position that objects are essentially instances of their sorts. After rendering Wiggins' essentialist argument, I demonstrate that it is either inconclusive or question begging. As such, there is no reason to accept sortal essentialism. Chapter seven looks at the Byzantine arguments concerning origin essentialism. It is shown that these arguments are either inconclusive - in that they do not entail origin essentialism - or assume origin essentialism at the out-set, leaving us little reason to accept origin essentialism. Chapter eight examines Mackie's minimalist essentialism. After laying out the position, I then examine a series of objections it faces. In particular, I show that even if we accept minimalist essentialism, it would not help us answer the Extension Question. As such, we have no reason to do so. I conclude that essential properties can best be understood as those sparse properties of an object which satisfy a specific modal criterion, as demonstrated in chapter five. However, the number of properties that satisfy this criterion might be quite small, as indicated by the results of chapters six through eight. This result is a mixed one for the essentialist: while we now know what essential properties are, it seems like we lost them all somewhere along the way.

Abstract:
A forest harvester operator is today facing a stressful work environment with a high demand on coordination skills and effectiveness to run the operation with positive economical outcome. The learning phase is very long compared to similar work. The vision for this project was to transform the machine, through intuitive and innovative interface design, into an extension of the operator’s body. In this way it provides higher productivity as well as user friendliness, shorter learning phase and a healthier work situation. This was realized through the use of prior but yet not market available related research. Through market studies, applicable technology already available in other industries was found. The result is a complete seat with controls for a conceptual Gremo harvester realizable in the year 2023.

Singer, Mathew Kyle. "Self powered wrist extension orthosis." Thesis, University of Canterbury. Mechanical Engineering, 2006. http://hdl.handle.net/10092/1154.

Full text
Abstract:
One of the most devastating effects of tetraplegia is the inability to grasp and manipulate everyday objects necessary to living an independent life. Currently surgery is widely accepted as the solution to improve hand functionality. However, surgery becomes difficult when the user has paralysed wrists as is the case with C5 tetraplegia. The aim of this research was to develop a solution which provided controlled wrist flexion and extension which, when combined with surgery, achieves a 'key pinch' grip. This particular grip is critically important for people with C5 tetraplegia as it is used for countless grasping activities, necessary on a day-to-day basis. A systematic design process was used to evolve the solution to provide controlled wrist flexion and extension. Concept brainstorming identified four alternative solutions which were evaluated to find the preferred concept. The chosen solution was called the Self Powered Wrist Extension Orthosis, more commonly referred to as the 'orthosis'. This concept contained a shoulder harness which provided both energy and control to the wrist harness, which in turn changed the wrist position. The orthosis was developed with the use of a mathematical model which theoretically predicted the functional performance by comparing the required force needed to move the wrist harness to the achievable force supplied by the user's shoulders. Using these parameters, the orthosis was optimized using the matlab Nelder-Mead algorithm which adjusted the wrist harness geometries to maximize the functional performance. A prototype was constructed and tested with the help of two participants who when combined, achieved an average of 18.5° of wrist rotation. The theoretical model however predicted an average range of motion of 28.4°. The discrepancy found between the theoretical and experimental result can be contributed to incorrect assumptions in the theoretical model. This included unaccounted friction and inaccurate modeling of the orthosis dynamics. The feedback from potential users of the orthosis was enthusiastic and encouraging especially towards the simplicity, usability and practicality of the design.

In this thesis, theory of Extension Operator is developed and used to understand some questions related to Neuron Networks Theory. The approach of Neuron Networs through the point of view of Extension Operator also enables a improvement in the Backpropagation algorithm used in Neuron Networks training.
