Abstract:
The relation between Southern Oscillation Index (SOI) and Indian northeast monsoon has been studied in antecedent and concurrent modes based on monthly /seasonal mean SOI and monthly/seasonal rainfall data of Tamil Nadu for the 104 year period, 1901 to 2004. It has been found that a good negative relationship exists between the SOI and Indian northeast monsoon in antecedent and concurrent modes, the former being stronger than the later. In the concurrent mode, a strong negative relationship exists during the beginning of the season which changes as the season advances and turns positive during the fag end of the season. Such a changing nature of relationship is explained through the variation of latitudinal positions of 200 hPa Sub Tropical Ridge (STR) / Equatorial Trough (ET) and the location of these with reference to the latitudinal location of the area benefited by the northeast monsoon. It has been shown that a positive (negative) SOI shifts the STR north(south)wards throughout the year. The relationship between latitudinal position of STR and the Indian northeast monsoon rainfall (NMR) is negative during the beginning of the season and turns positive during the fag end of the season, which is similar to the relationship between SOI and NMR. The relation between upper tropospheric wind/temperature anomalies and NMR also shows a similar change in relationship. Westerly wind and negative temperature anomalies in October changing to easterly wind and positive temperature anomalies in January are by and large associated with good northeast monsoon activity. The reversal in the relationship between latitudinal position of STR and NMR as the season advances has also been partly explained based on theoretical considerations by invoking the tilting term of the vorticity equation. Thus the SOI appears to manifest itself on Indian northeast monsoon rainfall by way of modulating the latitudinal positions of STR. An analysis based on Australian “Rainman” software on winter monsoon rainfall of some Sri Lankan and southeast Asian stations has substantiated the changing nature of relationship. A study of dates of onset and withdrawal of Indian northeast monsoon in relation to SOI has revealed that negative (positive) SOI in September is associated with early (late) onset. But, continuation of negative SOI throughout the season favours early and abrupt withdrawal. Positive SOI during the fag end of the season is frequently associated with extension of the monsoon into January of the next year.

Abstract:
We present a pixel-level angle sensitive detector composed of silicon-on-insulator (SOI) photodiode (PD) stacked with a gold surface plasmon (SP) antenna to affect the direction of the incoming light. The surface plasmons are excited in the grating-type SP antenna and enhance the diffraction efficiency of the grating. The diffracted light is coupled strongly with the propagation light in the SOI waveguide when the phase matching condition is satisfied. The phase matching takes place at a specific angle of light incidence, and the discrimination of the light based on the incident angle is achieved. As spatial patterns in the polar coordinate of the elevation-azimuth angles (θ, ϕ) of the incident light, we present the phase matching condition theoretically, the absorption efficiency in the SOI by simulation, and also the quantum efficiency of the SOI PD experimentally for different SP antennas of one-dimensional (1D) line-and-space (L/S) and two-dimensional (2D) hole array gratings under various polarization angles. 1D grating offers a polarization sensitive angle detection and 2D grating exhibits angle detection in two orthogonal directions, enabling a polarization independent angle sensitivity. A good agreement among the theory, simulation, and experiment are attained. The proposed device features relatively high quantum efficiency as an angle-sensitive pixel (ASP) and gives wider opportunities in applications such as three-dimensional (3D) imaging, depth-of-field extension, and lensless imaging.

Abstract:
The solution to the problem of autonomous mobile systems navigation is a complex task, traditionally presented in the form of solving the sequence of subtasks: perception of information about the environment, localization and mapping, path planning, and motion control. A large number of scientific works are devoted to the solution of the listed subtasks. However, existing research does not pay enough attention to the integration of individual elements of the navigation cycle solutions into a single homogeneous system. This leads to an additional accumulation of errors in the process of a complex solution to the navigation problem. In previous works, a model was proposed that provides homogeneous integration, using for this a multi-level structure of representing an autonomous system's knowledge in the form of sets of fuzzy rules and facts. The five-level model represents the autonomous system's knowledge of goals, paths, an environment map, strategies, and specific controls necessary to achieve the goal. To ensure adequate processing of fuzzy rules, a modified Takagi-Sugeno-Kang fuzzy inference model is proposed. In this work, the previously proposed model is expanded. The model was tested in conditions of noisy sensor data. A method is proposed for the formation of level 2 rules, which describe an autonomous system's cartographic knowledge about the environment, using the well-known methods of global path planning. Extension of the model provides dynamic paths replanning of the autonomous system, using the processing of present knowledge about existing paths. Such replanning is effective in terms of computational time and independent of the completeness of the knowledge base of complete paths.

Nanoscale MOSFETs Gate-Recessed Channel (GRC) device with a silicon channel thickness (t SI ) as low as 2.2 nm was first tested at room temperature for functionality check, and then tested at low temperature (77 K) for I–V characterizations. In spite of its FD-SOI nanoscale thickness, the GRC device has surprisingly exhibited a Kink Effect in the output characteristics at 77 K. The anomalous Kink Effect can be explained by the increase of the lateral electric field in the drain junction with the channel extension zone when lowering the temperature.

The length of Source/Drain (S/D) extension (LSDE) of nano-node p-channel FinFETs (pFinFETs) on SOI wafer influencing the device performance is exposed, especially in drive current and gate/S/D leakage. In observation, the longer LSDE pFinFET provides a larger series resistance and degrades the drive current (IDS), but the isolation capability between the S/D contacts and the gate electrode is increased. The shorter LSDE plus the shorter channel length demonstrates a higher trans-conductance (Gm) contributing to a higher drive current. Moreover, the subthreshold swing (S.S.) at longer channel length and longer LSDE represents a higher value indicating the higher amount of the interface states which possibly deteriorate the channel mobility causing the lower drive current. Abstract:

Abstract:
e16579 Background: Pre-treatment identification of biochemical recurrence (BCR) from MRI may enable the use of aggressive neo-adjuvant therapies for prostate cancer patients to improve prognosis. BCR is often associated with aggressive cancer growth and/or extra prostatic extension resulting in an irregular bulge and focal capsular retraction. This may induce differences in the shape of the prostate capsule between BCR positive (BCR+) and BCR negative (BCR-) patients as observed on MRI. In this work, we show that computer extracted shape features of the prostate capsule on MRI can identify patients that are at a risk of BCR post-treatment Methods: In a single centre IRB approved study, from a registry of 874 patients, availability of complete image datasets (T1w, T2w and ADC map); no treatment for PCa before MRI; presence of clinically localised PCa; availability of Gleason score; and data available for post-treatment PSA and follow-up for at least 3 years in patients without BCR were used as inclusion criteria to select 80 patients. The prostate capsule was manually segmented on T2w MRI by an experienced radiologist. Two atlases A+ and A- were created for BCR+ and BCR- patients respectively with similar Gleason score (6 to 9), similar numbers in each cohort (25 each) and similar tumor stage (T2 to T3). A t-test based analysis corrected for multiple comparison revealed statistically significant prostate shape differences between A+ and A- in surface of interest (SOI). Curvature features (magnitude and surface normal orientations) were extracted from SOI of the two cohorts. A random forest classifier was trained using the 50 training images (from A+ and A-) and validated using a hold-out validation set of 30 patients. Results: The inter-quartile range, variance, skewness and kurtosis of curvature magnitude and normal orientations were found to be predictive of BCR. The RF classifier trained using these features could predict BCR with an accuracy of 78% and an AUC of 0.71 in the validation set. Conclusions: Curvature magnitude and orientation features of the prostate capsule from the SOI may be predictive of BCR. In future a multi centre independent datasets will be used to validate the findings.

Abstract In this letter we present an MEMS Sensor to measure displacement in at least two directions. The sensor device is a resonant, Lorentz force driven and cross-shaped sensing structure whereas the measurement signal equals the change of the resonance frequency induced by the deformation of the sensor-frame. This device is a pre-study to implement the sensor in a two-dimensional micro manipulation system for which the team uses a micro system analyzer to detect the resonance frequencies of the different vibration modes. The sensor-frame deformation between 0.1 and 2 µm is generated by four piezo actuators. With this setup, the sensor achieves a sensitivity of up to 20 nm Hz−1. The device is fabricated from a 100 mm SOI wafer with standard CMOS processes and has two Pt1000 elements integrated on the device layer to compensate any effects caused by thermal extension of the structure or temperature induced changes of material parameters.

Abstract:
Homogeneous Charge Compression Ignition (HCCI) has challenges of ignition control. In this paper, HCCI ignition timing and combustion rate were controlled by two-stage direct injection (TSDI) strategies on a four-stroke gasoline HCCI engine. TSDI strategy was proposed to solve the two major problems of HCCI application-ignition control and load extension. Both simulation and experiments were carried out on a gasoline HCCI engine with negative valve overlap (NVO). An engine model with detailed chemical kinetics was established to study the gas exchange process and the direct injection strategy in the gasoline HCCI engine with TSDI and NVO. Simulation results were compared with experiments and good agreement was achieved. The simulated and experimental results provided a detailed insight into the processes governing ignition in the HCCI engine. Using TSDI, the fuel concentration, temperature as well as chemical species can be controlled. The effects of different injection parameters, such as split injection ratio and start-of-injection (SOI) timing, were studied. The experimental results indicate that, two-stage direct injection is a practical technology to control the ignition timing and combustion rate effectively in four-stroke gasoline HCCI engines. Both the high load and low load limits of HCCI operation were extended.

Abstract:
ABSTRACT: By most standards, Ghana can, prudently enough, be defined as one of the most politically stable nations on the African continent, which in itself is, a prerequisite for economic prosperity. On the one hand, this West African country possesses mineral resources, gold and diamonds in particular, hence its former name of Gold Coast, and on the other, it succeeded to establish a democratic tradition after long years of political upheavals. There is an expectation, then, that a momentous time like the one of oil discovery in 2007 would mean a quicker and steady economic growth and a better quality of life for Ghanaians. But this hydrocarbon potential does not produce wealth in itself, good economic management does. The present paper sets out to examine the impact the black gold had on national economy in Ghana, and by extension, the effect on its social life. It endeavours to inquire into the extent to which oil discovery responded to Ghanaian expectations and whether the administrations of Atta Mills and later Mahama exploited this new energy in a way that benefited more than just a small elite. Findings tend to suggest that weak economic management in oil industry, predominantly characterized by a lack of transparency over oil revenues, in addition to a lack of discernment as to prioritized sectors, agriculture in particular, the cornerstone of national economy in Ghana, led to public disillusion.

From the mid-nineteenth century the urban model of the Old Regime was exhausted in Spain and the so-called bourgeois city emerged. The changes took shape in the transformation of the inherited plot and in the extension of its plan. The role of private initiative was usually the production of urban land through the division of its properties. The article analyzes the formation of the bourgeois city in Llanes (Eastern Asturias), taking into account the role of the private initiative in the expansion of the plan between 1850 and 1960. The characteristics of parceling are described, establishing their general features and contextualizing them in general processes.

Abstract:
This paper examines the relationship between El Nino/Southern Oscillation (ENSO) and rainfall patterns in Nigeria. Annual rainfall totals, growing season rainfall totals and annual raindays of 27 Nigerian meteorological stations with varying lengths of records from 1903 to 2012 were collected from the Nigerian Meteorological Agency (NIMET). Monthly Sea Surface Temperatures (SSTs) anomalies data over Atlantic and Pacific Oceans and Southern Oscillation Index (SOI) were obtained from Climatic Prediction Centre (CPC). Kendall tau statistics and Step-Wise Multiple Regression model were used for data analyses. Results from this study showed that annual rainfall totals, growing season rainfall and annual raindays series exhibited a significant downward trend at most of the stations over the period of the study. It was observed that annual rainfall pattern changed from a positive pattern within 1931- 1960 period to a negative pattern within 1961-1990 period and then, to a positive pattern within 1991-2012 period. It was concluded that he alternating wet and dry patterns in inter-annual rainfall fluctuations and by extension, the droughts and floods over Nigeria within the study period, were caused by sea surface temperature anomalies over the Atlantic and Pacific Oceans. The paper therefore concludes that SSTs should be integrated in the seasonal rainfall prediction models in Nigeria for an improved forecast. Oladejo, K. Abstract:

Abstract:

Abstract:
Low-Speed Pre-Ignition (LSPI) is a destructive combustion event associated primarily with new, ultra-efficient, downsized gasoline engines, which provide efficiency benefits in general operation. Biofuels, specifically bio-gasoline, are an alternative fuel that attempts to reduce the harmful emissions output by modern Internal Combustion Engines (ICEs). This study attempts to understand the effect of biofuel use on LSPI, through the use of a numerical simulation tool developed in Ricardo Wave. Development of the tool includes the integration of RFlame, an extension capable of modeling autoignition within a 1D domain. Use of the tool highlights the impact of five ethanol blends, E10, E20, E30, E50 and E85, with clear impacts on both the severity and frequency of LSPI events correlated with chemical properties, such as the enthalpy of vaporization (HoV) and octane number. E30 is highlighted as the critical blend for LSPI severity, with both increased severity and intensity seen with a 30% concentration, and a greater sensitivity to effects such as the start of ignition (SOI). Higher-concentration biofuels, such as E50 and E85 bio-gasoline, show much more favorable behaviors, such as a vast reduction in end-gas knock events, but are limited in their use due to their deployment being both cost-prohibitive and potentially damaging in current hardware. Future work on this topic will surround the further development of the simulation tool to integrate 3D solving elements, understand the role of fluid interactions in LSPI, and study optimal fuel characteristics for future use in ICEs.

Abstract:

Abstract:
Web Services for Remote Portlets (WSRP) provide solutions for implementation of lightweight Service Oriented Architecture (SOA). UDDI extension for WSRP enables the discovery and access to user facing web services provided by business partners while eliminating the need to design local user facing portlets. Most importantly, the remote portlets can be updated by web service providers from their own servers. Remote portlet consumers are not required to make any changes in their portals to accommodate updated remote portlets. This approach results in easier team development, upgrades, administration, low cost development and usage of shared resources. Furthermore, with the growing interest in SOA, WSRP should cooperate with service bus (ESB).In this paper, the author examines the technical underpinning of the UDDI extensions for WSRP (user facing remote web services) and their role in service sharing among business partners. The author also briefly outlines the architectural view of using WSRP in enterprise integration tasks and the role Enterprise Service Bus (ESB).

Full text
Abstract:
This research is the extension of a project studying the impact of 19th century severe weather events in Australia and their relation to similar events during the 20th and 21st century. Two floods with the worst known impacts in the Murray–Darling Basin (MDB) are studied. One of these events which occurred during 1956 is relativelywell known and the Bureau of Meteorology archives contain good rainfall data covering the period. Additionally, information on the weather systems causing this rainfall can be obtained. Rainfall, flood and weather system data for this event are presented here and compared with a devastating event during 1870. Although archived Australian rainfall data is negligible during 1870 and there is no record of weather systems affecting Australia during that year, a realistic history of the floods and weather systems in the MDB during 1870 is created. This follows an extensive search through newspaper archives contained in the National Library of Australia’s web site. Examples are presented showing how the meteorological data in 19th century newspapers can be used to create weather charts. Six such events in 1870 are demonstrated and three of these had a phenomenal effect on the Murray–Darling system. The 1870 floods followed drought type conditions and it is remarkable that it was worse in many ways than the 1956 event which followed flood conditions in the MDB during the previous year. The events in 1870 caused much loss of life from drowning in the MDB in particular froman east coast low (ECL) in April 1870 and two Victorian weather systems in September and October 1870. In 1956, there were also record-breaking events especially during March when all-time record monthly rainfall were reported in New South Wales. Overall the greatest impact from flooding across the whole MDB was associated with the 1870 flooding. Analyses of heavy rainfall areas in the MDB showed a linear trend increase from 1900 to 2018. Analysing the same data using an 8-year moving average highlighted three peaks around the five highest annual rainfall years. The largest peak occurred around 1950 and 1956, the second largest around 1973 and 1974 and the third around 2010. Each of these 5 years occurred during negative phases of the Interdecadal Pacific Oscillation (IPO) and positive phases of the Southern Oscillation Index (SOI). Studies have shown that the SOI is a climate driver in the MDB along with a persistent blocking high-pressure systems south of Australia along longitude 140°E with a low to its north. Three major blocking events with record rainfall and flooding in the MDB occurred in 1983, 1984 and 1990. Thiswas during the period 1977–1990 when blocking was conducive to heavy rain in the MDB and was coincidentwith a positive phase of the IPO, thus helping conflictwith the IPO–MDB heavy rainfall relationship. Persistent and unexplained middle level westerly winds kept subtropical Queensland clear of tropical cyclones during the negative phases of the IPO from 1999 to 2009 and during the 1960s, influencing low rainfall in the MDB during those periods.

Abstract:
Abstract Throughout the early modern period, French law forbade unsanctioned marriages between minors, a crime classified as “seduction.” Men who wed without the consent of their bride's parents earned the designation “seducers” and faced the potential of capital punishment. By the mid-eighteenth century, notorious seduction cases assumed outsize significance because of radical changes in legal culture. From the 1760s until the eve of the Revolution, defense lawyers wielded the legal brief as a powerful instrument of public opinion, criticizing parental control over marriage and championing free choice in its place. These men transformed seduction cases into referendums on paternal power—and, by extension, the power of the monarchy itself. While historians have long examined politically charged critiques of paternal power during this period, this article explores these critiques' unique implications for unwed women. It illustrates how celebrated lawyers mobilized language of Enlightenment to carve out discursive space in which young women exercised autonomy vis-à-vis their parents. Nevertheless, it also argues that these same legal discourses constrained female happiness to the realm of marriage to sooth anxieties about the threat that disobedient daughters posed to family, social, and gender order.

Abstract:
We study deduction systems for the weakest, extensional and two-valued non-Fregean propositional logic SCI . The language of SCI is obtained by expanding the language of classical propositional logic with a new binary connective ≡ that expresses the identity of two statements; that is, it connects two statements and forms a new one, which is true whenever the semantic correlates of the arguments are the same. On the formal side, SCI is an extension of classical propositional logic with axioms characterizing the identity connective, postulating that identity must be an equivalence and obey an extensionality principle. First, we present and discuss two types of systems for SCI known from the literature, namely sequent calculus and a dual tableau-like system. Then, we present a new dual tableau system for SCI and prove its soundness and completeness. Finally, we discuss and compare the systems presented in the paper.

In this paper we define a Rankin–Selberg L-function attached to two Galois invariant automorphic cuspidal representations of GL m(𝔸E) and GL m′(𝔸F) over cyclic Galois extensions E and F of prime degree. This differs from the classical case in that the two extension fields E and F could be completely unrelated to one another, and we exploit the existence of the automorphic induction functor over cyclic extensions (see [J. Arthur and L. Clozel, Simple Algebras, Base Change, and the Advanced Theory of the Trace Formula, Annals of Mathematics Studies, No. 120 (Princeton University Press, Princeton, NJ, 1989)]) to define the L-function. Using a result proved by C. S. Abstract:
Background: During total knee arthroplasty (TKA) for osteoarthritis, the sagittal gap imbalance (SGI) with a relatively large extension gap is an important surgical challenge. We determined the predictors of SGI with a relatively large extension gap and evaluated the surgical outcomes of knees with SGI. Methods: 551 consecutive cases of primary TKA for osteoarthritis were retrospectively reviewed. The cohort was divided into two groups according to the SGI and statistically matched according to baseline characteristics via the inverse probability of treatment weighting method. Multiple linear and logistic regression analyses were performed to determine the predictors of sagittal gap difference (SGD) and SGI. Intergroup differences in clinical and radiological outcomes were analyzed. Results: Of all the knees included, 8.5% (n = 45) presented with SGI with a relatively large extension gap and required femoral sagittal balancing to manage SGI. The hyperextension angle (HA), preoperative joint line convergence angle (JLCA), and the change in posterior tibial slope (PTS) significantly correlated to SGD and predicted SGI with a relatively large extension gap. SGI group showed significant changes in femoral posterior condylar offset and joint line height compared to those without SGI (1.48 vs −0.45, 1.37 vs −0.51, respectively). Postoperative ROM and knee society knee scores were lower in SGI group. Conclusion: Knees requiring sagittal balancing to manage SGI with a relatively large extension gap is not uncommon in TKA for osteoarthritic knees. The change in PTS is an independent and modifiable predictor of SGI.

Abstract:
Current research suggests that social identification processes play an important role in markets. In this study, the authors propose that marketing research has neglected one important factor, which influences the success of a brand extension, namely the group processes between social groups and brand communities framing the new product introduction. Based on social identification theory, the authors derive a framework integrating identification and stereotyping processes, simultaneously testing for drivers of brand extension potential, which have been found to be important in past empirical studies. Using a structural equation modeling approach, the authors test for in-group and out-group effects in two hypothetical brand extension scenarios of one snowboard brand (Burton), and a surf brand (Billabong) into the ski market. They find that the social identification processes underlying the new product introduction significantly drive the potential success of the brand extension. By being the first study to explore the role of identification and stereotype effects in brand extension, the authors make an important contribution to research in this area. Moreover, our study provides important implications for brand managers planning to extend their brands into new product categories.

Abstract:
Abstract Background Gastrointestinal ultrasound (GIUS), applied to Crohn`s Disease, has proven correlation with imaging studies and endoscopy in terms of diagnosis, follow-up and evaluation of transmural complications. However, real-world data about Ulcerative Colitis (UC) patients is still scarce. The aim of our study was to evaluate GIUS role in severe UC patients from our real-life cohort. Methods We present a retrospective observational study from a single tertiary center. We included adult UC patients who needed hospital admission due to severe disease activity, defined as Truelove-Witts Index (TW) 15 or higher and Simple Activity Index (SAI) 4 or higher. We assessed clinical (TW, SAI) and biomarker (CRP, calprotectin) evolution along hospitalization, need for biological treatment, steroid (CS) therapy or surgery, apart from GIUS parameters (wall thickness, wall hyperaemia, wall echotexture, creeping fat, wall ulcers), GIUS indexes (SUS-CD, Simple US Score, IBUS-SAS) and endoscopic findings (UCEIS) coming from a baseline exam. Statistic analysis was performed using Pearson’s Correlation coeficient, multivariant análisis, and Spearman`s Correlation coeficient between GIUS indexes. Results We included 24 patients, with a mean extensión of 66.67% left colitis and a 29.17% pancolitis. Severity of disease at admission is described as a mean SAI 6.16 and a mean TW 17.25, with a mean fecal calprotectin of 3643. A 29% of patients were treated previously with biological therapy. Referring to GIUS parameters, median wall thickness was 5.65mm, with a 83.33% of patients presenting a Limberg grade 3 of wall hyperaemia. Wall ulcers were present in a 58.34% of patients, and established creeping fat was present in a 45.83% of patients. Mean score of GIUS indexes was SUS-CD 8.65, Simple US Score 8, and IBUS-SAS 57. GIUS proves to be an useful tool to assess diagnosis and delimit extension of disease. A 79% of patients presented unknown extension of disease at the time of admission, mostly due to incomplete colonoscopy at diagnosis. GIUS describes full extension of disease in all the patients of the study. In statistic análisis, our main finding is that Simple US Score proved statistic relationship with CS response during admission (Patients who responded to CS presented a mean Simple US Score 2.5 points lower than non-responders, p = 0.03). No isolated GIUS parameter proved relationship with CS response during admission. Conclusion According to our results, GIUS is an effective tool for assessing diagnosis and extensión of disease in severe UC. Also, Simple US Score seems to be a reliable predictor of CS response during admission. Larger studies are needed to determine GIUS usefulness for predicting natural history of CU and need for CS or biological therapy.

Abstract:
We construct asymptotically flat, scalar flat extensions of Bartnik data [Formula: see text], where [Formula: see text] is a metric of positive Gauss curvature on a two-sphere [Formula: see text], and [Formula: see text] is a function that is either positive or identically zero on [Formula: see text], such that the mass of the extension can be made arbitrarily close to the half area radius of [Formula: see text]. In the case of [Formula: see text], the result gives an analog of a theorem of Mantoulidis and Schoen [On the Bartnik mass of apparent horizons, Class. Quantum Grav. 32(20) (2015) 205002, 16 pp.], but with extensions that have vanishing scalar curvature. In the context of initial data sets in general relativity, the result produces asymptotically flat, time-symmetric, vacuum initial data with an apparent horizon [Formula: see text], for any metric [Formula: see text] with positive Gauss curvature, such that the mass of the initial data is arbitrarily close to the optimal value in the Riemannian Penrose inequality. The method we use is the Shi–Tam type metric construction from [Positive mass theorem and the boundary behaviors of compact manifolds with nonnegative scalar curvature, J. Differential Geom. 62(1) (2002) 79–125] and a refined Shi–Tam monotonicity, found by the first named author in [On a localized Riemannian Penrose inequality, Commun. Math. Phys. 292(1) (2009) 271–284].

Abstract:
Abstract. Basin-scale salt flow and the evolution of salt structures in rift basins is mainly driven by sub- and supra-salt faulting and sedimentary loading. Crustal extension is often accompanied and followed by thermal subsidence leading to tilting of the graben flanks, which might induce an additional basinward-directed driver for salt tectonics. We designed a new experimental analogue apparatus capable of integrating the processes of sub-salt graben extension and tilting of the flanks, such that the overlapping effects on the deformation of a viscous substratum and the brittle overburden can be simulated. The presented experimental study was performed to demonstrate the main functionality of the experimental procedure and setup, demonstrating the main differences in structural evolution between conditions of pure extension, pure tilting, and extension combined with tilting. Digital image correlation of top-view stereoscopic images was applied to reveal the 3D displacement and strain patterns. The results of these experiments suggest that in salt basins affected by sub-salt extension and flank inclination, the salt flow and downward movement of overburden affects the entire flanks of the basin. Supra-salt extension occurring close to the graben centre is overprinted by the downward movement; i.e. the amount of extension is reduced or extensional faults zones are shortened. At the basin margins, thin-skinned extensional faults developed as a result of gravity gliding. A comparison with natural examples reveals that such fault zones can also be observed at the margins of many salt-bearing rift basins indicating that gravity gliding played a role in these basins.

Abstract:
Let We be the eth recursively enumerable (r.e.) set in a standard enumeration. The fixed point form of Kleene's recursion theorem asserts that for every recursive function f there exists e which is a fixed point of f in the sense that We = Wf(e). In this paper our main concern is to study the degrees of functions with no fixed points. We consider both fixed points in the strict sense above and fixed points modulo various equivalence relations on recursively enumerable sets. Our starting point for the investigation of the degrees of functions without (strict) fixed points is the following result due to M. M. Arslanov [A1, Theorem 1] and known as the Arslanov completeness criterion. Proofs of this result may also be found in [So1, Theorem 1.3] and [So2, Chapter 12], and we will give a game version of the proof in §5 of this paper.Theorem 1.1 (Arslanov). Let A be an r.e. set. Then A is complete (i.e. A has degree0′) iff there is a function f recursive in A with no fixed point.
