Abstract:
AbstractSuppose thatR→Sis an extension of local domains andν* is a valuation dominatingS. We consider the natural extension of associated graded rings along the valuation grν*(R) → grν*(S). We give examples showing that in general, this extension does not share good properties of the extensionR→S, but after enough blow ups above the valuations, good properties of the extensionR→Sare reflected in the extension of associated graded rings. Stable properties of this extension (after blowing up) are much better in characteristic zero than in positive characteristic. Our main result is a generalisation of the Abhyankar–Jung theorem which holds for extensions of associated graded rings along the valuation, after enough blowing up.

Abstract:
The authors study the determinants of line extension success using data on 75 line extensions of 34 cigarette brands over a 20-year period to investigate the relative effects of brand, extension, and firm characteristics on the incremental market share of brand line extensions. The econometric model also captures the extent of cannibalization of parent brand sales that may have occurred due to the line extension's introduction. The authors also explore the role of a brand's symbolic value as a factor in line extension success. Results indicate that parent brand strength and its symbolic value, early entry timing, a firm's size, and distinctive marketing competencies, as well as the advertising support allocated to line extensions, contribute positively to the success of line extensions. Their findings suggest that, in this industry, cannibalization effects of line extension activity may have been limited and line extensions into earlier subcategories actually may have helped the parent brand. Even with cannibalization, the incremental sales generated by the extension seem to be reason enough to make a line extension strategy viable.

Abstract:
In this article, the author investigates the impact of a brand extension's success versus failure on customer evaluation of brand counter-extensions. A counterextension is a brand extension that is launched into Category A by Brand 2 that belongs to Category B in a reciprocal direction to a launch of a previous extension into Category B by Brand 1 that belongs to Category A. The results from five studies show that customers evaluate a counterextension more favorably when the preceding extension is a success rather than a failure. Furthermore, the evaluation of the counterextension is superior if it is launched by a major brand, especially if the previous successful extension was also launched by a major brand. Finally, a successful extension indirectly dilutes a brand and results in a greater loss in choice share to a counterextension than does a failed extension. The key findings generalize to a sequence of extensions across more than one intercategory boundary.

AbstractWe study extensions L/K of complete discrete valuation fields K with residue field of characteristic p > 0, which we do not assume to be perfect. Our work concerns ramification theory for such extensions, in particular we show that all classical properties which are true under the hypothesis “the residue field extensionis separable” are still valid under the more general hypothesis that the valuation ring extension is monogenic. We also show that conversely, if classical ramification properties hold true for an extension L/K, then the extension of valuation rings is monogenic. These are the “well ramified” extensions. We show that there are only three possible types of well ramified extensions and we give examples. In the last part of the paper we consider, for the three types, Kato’s generalization of the conductor, which we show how to bound in certain cases.

Abstract:
Agricultural extension is a learning process that designed to improve the skills of agricultural operators, in particular farmers. This study aimed to determine whether agricultural extension activities have a role to play in the development of Agro-politan areas and what factors impact agricultural extension. Descriptive statistical analysis, correlation analysis, and factor analysis were used. Based on descriptive statistical analysis, it can be seen that agricultural extension agents play a role in three subsystems in the Agropolitan Area (input subsystem, process subsystem, and marketing subsystem). Based on the correlation analysis and factor analysis, three factors influenced agricultural extension's success, such as the participation of farmers, the performance of agricultural extensions, and the methods of the extension used.

Abstract:
Three studies examine the influence of brand-elicited affect on consumers' evaluations of brand extensions. When a brand spontaneously elicits affective reactions, consumers appear to form an initial impression of the brand's new extension based on these reactions. The affect that they experience for other reasons and attribute to the brand can influence this impression as well. Their later evaluations of the extension are then based on this impression. This is true regardless of the similarity between the extension and the core brand. These results contrast with evidence that affect influences brand extension evaluations through its mediating impact on perceptions of core-extension similarity. This latter influence occurs only when consumers are explicitly asked to estimate the extension's similarity to the core before they evaluate it.

Abstract:
We considered an extension of the first-order logic (FOL) by Bealer's intensional abstraction operator. Contemporary use of the term “intension” derives from the traditional logical Frege-Russell doctrine that an idea (logic formula) has both an extension and an intension. Although there is divergence in formulation, it is accepted that the “extension” of an idea consists of the subjects to which the idea applies, and the “intension” consists of the attributes implied by the idea. From the Montague's point of view, the meaning of an idea can be considered as particular extensions in different possible worlds. In the case of standard FOL, we obtain a commutative homomorphic diagram, which is valid in each given possible world of an intensional FOL: from a free algebra of the FOL syntax, into its intensional algebra of concepts, and, successively, into an extensional relational algebra (different from Cylindric algebras). Then we show that this composition corresponds to the Tarski's interpretation of the standard extensional FOL in this possible world.

This study evaluated the experience of the Agroecology group at the Academic Unit of Garanhuns/Federal Rural University of Pernambuco (UAG/UFRPE). This campus was the first academic unit from the Federal Program for Expansion and Decentralization of Higher Education Institutions in Brazil (REUNI). It was also the first campus established by UFRPE in the country side of Pernambuco State. The new unit is considered an important tool to foster local development in the ‘Agreste Meridional’ region of Pernambuco State. The main characteristic of this study was to identify sustainable development through the actions of the Agroecology Group from UAG/UFRPE by measuring educational, social, and economical development as well as professional qualification. The research was classified as a case study where qualitative and exploratory aspects were addressed. The survey was performed by analyzing the documents from the Agroecology group records. Methods used in this assessment included reports, systematization of participatory diagnostics, semi-structured interviews, direct observations, and bibliographic research. The dissertation was organized in for chapters, reporting its discussions under the framework of University rural extension; family farming; agroecology and sustainable local development. Confronting the findings of the research with the empirical contextualization of this study allowed identifying the difficulties found by the Agroecology Group, such as the infrastructure and the responsibility from both local and state governmental agencies, with the support of the University. From the intellectual build-up and humanistic perspective for the family farmers, the Agroecology Group delivered the expected results by promoting the continuation of the true process of sustainable development and agroecology by fostering local culture and endogenous knowledge.

Abstract:
Rural Extension in Brazil has passed through many transformations in its way of acting and developing the work with farmers. The extension methods are extremely related to these transformations and, in a large extent, since the creation of the official services of Rural Extension, they arethe identity of the extensionist institutionsworker in the country. This study has analyzed the use of different methods of rural extension by the Empresa de Pesquisa de Agropecuária e Extensão Rural Santa Catarina (Epagri). The research was developed through the case study of the Unidade de GestãoTécnica 5, composed by 31 cities, located in the region called Alto Vale do Itajaí SC, with a cuali-quantative approach. The results point out that, in relation to the nature of the work done by extensionists, there is a predominance of office activities over field work, determined, mainly, by the demand of the paper work generated by governmental programs. The data demonstrated that about 50% of the farmers and 40% of the actions developed are associated to back activities, showing that a big part of the technician`s effort is associated to the demand of governmental programs. Considering the nature of the work methods, it was founda predominance of individual approach technics, they constitute 94.54% of the activities unfolded, existing among them a predominance of the office visiting. According to the technicians‟ point of view, the predominance of the individual approach is related to the nature of the work that they do and, the changes implemented in the Epagri managementdid not produced the expected effects in the increasing use of group methods.

Abstract:
Imagine how you would react if you learned that your favorite singer was recording new music in a style far from that which you have come to love. Perhaps you would disapprove. Then you might react like many Porsche consumers did when they learned that “their” brand would start producing sports utility vehicles. They are not without peers. In fact, how would you respond if a favored brand would launch, say, a chain of coffee shops? Some people would resist such an idea. These scenarios illustrate how strong consumer-brand bonds may complicate attempts to extend brands into new businesses. The research presented in the thesis explores this connection, towards a better understanding of the stakes facing both companies and consumers. It is an inquiry into tensions of extensions. The thesis comprises four published studies. Three explore how consumers with close ties to a brand react to brand extension. They acknowledge that consumers who come close to a brand potentially become stakeholders with opinions on efforts to change the products and marketing of that brand. They suggest that the implications of combining brand extension and strong consumer bonds can be substantial. The fourth study considers how the financial implications in particular can be analyzed and communicated within organizations. The findings show how brand extension can be an important event in a longer relationship with core consumers. This perspective is easily obscured when concentrating only on the perceptions of “the average consumer”. The thesis highlights symbolic and experiential aspects. It offers a closer look at such things as consumer identity, emotional reactions, and expression of criticism, and the findings should inform communication strategies and decision-making related to brand extensions.

Full text
Abstract:
Any system that models a real world application has to evolve to be consistent with its changing domain. Dealing with evolution in an effective manner is particularly important for those systems that may store large amounts of data such as databases and persistent languages. In persistent programming systems, one of the important issues in dealing with evolution is the specification of code that will continue to work in a type safe way despite changes to type definitions. Polymorphism is one mechanism which allows code to work over many types. Inclusion polymorphism is often said to be a model of type evolution. However, observing type changes in persistent systems has shown that types most commonly exhibit additive evolution. Even though inclusion captures this pattern in the case of record types, it does not always do so for other type constructors. The confusion of subtyping, inheritance and evolution often leads to unsound or at best, dynamically typed systems. Existing solutions to this problem do not completely address the requirements of type evolution in persistent systems. The aim of this thesis is to develop a form of polymorphism that is suitable for modelling additive evolution in persistent systems. The proposed strategy is to study patterns of evolution for the most generally used type constructors in persistent languages and to define a new relation, called extension, which models these patterns. This relation is defined independent of any existing relations used for dealing with evolution. A programming language mechanism is then devised to provide polymorphism over this relation. The polymorphism thus defined is called extension polymorphism. This thesis presents work involving the design and definition of extension polymorphism and an implementation of a type checker for this polymorphism. A proof of soundness for a type system which supports extension polymorphism is also presented.

Lewis, Edwin C. "The Attitudes of Extension Faculty Toward Globalizing Extension Programs: A Case Study of Virginia Cooperative Extension." Diss., Virginia Tech, 2006. http://hdl.handle.net/10919/26506.

Abstract:
Over the past several years, many state Cooperative Extension Services have taken inventory of their engagement with international issues, including barriers (real and perceived) to active participation in globalizing programs as well as staff needs for effective communication with diverse audiences. While Virginia Cooperative Extension (VCE) has actively involved 4-H youth in international exchange programs, they have not engaged in a coherent and proactive effort to globalize all program areas. The study purpose was to assess attitudes of VCE faculty toward globalizing their programming efforts. Also examined were information related to VCE facultyâ s current involvement in globally-focused activities and barriers to globalizing programming efforts. The survey instrument combined various sections of two surveys developed and employed by Barbara Ludwig in studies on Ohio Cooperative Extension. The web-based survey included four sections: 1) Employee Profile, 2) Involvement in International Activities, 3) Perception towards Global Issues, and 4) Perceived Barriers to Globalizing Extension Programs. The target audience included all VCE faculty members (N = 332). Two hundred six faculty members completed the on-line survey. This represents a return rate of 62%. Data revealed that 92% of the respondents were involved in international efforts within the past five years. On a scale of one to four, with four representing the highest level of engagement, campus administrators (mean = 2.66) and specialists (mean = 2.13) were the most involved in international programming effort; the least involved were the district directors (mean = 1.21). â Exchanged ideas with colleagues from other countriesâ and â hosted an international visitorâ were the top two activities performed by faculty. Data also revealed an attitude mean score of 2.9 on a scale from one to four, with four being the most positive. Campus administrators (mean = 3) were the most positive of the four position categories; agents were the least positive (mean = 2.86). Furthermore, the top two barriers to globalizing VCE programs, as identified by respondents, were â lack of financial supportâ and â not a programming priorityâ . Respondents also selected â Lack of timeâ as a major barrier.

Brown, Almeshia S. "An Assessment of Virginia Cooperative Extension's New Extension Agent Training Program." Diss., Virginia Tech, 2003. http://hdl.handle.net/10919/29890.

Full text
Abstract:
This study is an assessment of the New Extension Agent Training (NEAT) program in Virginia. Although new Extension agents have exceptional subject matter training, they often lack skills needed to be effective Extension professionals (Bennett, 1979). The NEAT program provides a way for new agents to receive hands-on experiences that will facilitate a smooth transition into their respective roles. There is currently no specific data that has the NEAT program. Therefore, an evaluation of the program by its participants to determine its importance and effectiveness may be utilized to enhance the effectiveness of the NEAT program. The survey utilized to collect data in the study was developed by the researcher. The instrument was put on a website where participants could access it during a given time frame. The population consisted of new Extension agents, training agents, and administrators who participated in the NEAT program and are currently employed by Virginia Cooperative Extension (VCE). Participants were asked to rate the importance and effectiveness of the NEAT program in facilitating new Extension agents' growth in a series of goals needed for a new agent to be proficient. These goals were then divided into eight competencies as outlined by National Policy Statement on Staff Training and Development (1968). Participants were asked to provide demographic information and suggestions that would be useful in designing future programs. Data were analyzed using SPSS. The data showed that communication was rated the most important competency while human development was considered the least important. The data related to the ratings of effectiveness of the NEAT program in relation to the eight competencies also demonstrated that respondents rated communication as the most effectively taught competency covered in the NEAT program, and human development as the least effectively taught competency. Significant differences among ratings by position in the NEAT program were measured at the 0.05 alpha level. Significant differences were observed both between new Extension agents and Extension administrators and between Extension training agents and Extension administrators were in the importance of a selected competency and the effectiveness of the NEAT program in teaching the some of the competencies.

Antei, Marco. "Extension de torseurs." Thesis, Lille 1, 2008. http://www.theses.fr/2008LIL10056/document.

Full text
Abstract:
The question we try to answer in this thesis is the following: let X be a relative scheme over a discrete valuation ring R and y' a G'-torsor over the generic fibre X' of X. Does it exist an R-group scheme G and a G-torsor Y over X whose generic fibre is isomorphic to the given torsor? We face this problem by means of the fundamental group scheme introduced by Nori for a reduced scheme X complete over a field and then generalized by Gasbarri for an irreducible and reduced scheme faithfully flat over a Dedekind scheme. We prove that the natural morphism f between the fundamental group scheme of X' and the generic fibre of the fundamental group scheme of X is always surjective for the fpqc topology. Moreover we prove that any torsor can be extended iff f is an isomorphism. The firstt two chapters of the thesis are devoted to an introduction of the objects used in the last two chapters. ln particular the tannakian definition of the fundamental group scheme and of the universal torsor of Nori are revisited. ln the third chapter a proof of the results mentioned before is given. The fourth chapter is devoted to a related question: let f be a morphism between two schemes Y and X over a field k.s.t. the direct image F of the structural sheaf of Y is essentially finite, is it possible to defme a Galois cIosure? We prove that the universal torsor associated to the sub-category of the category of essentially finite vector bundles generated by F is the desired Galois closure
