Abstract:
Abstract Expressionism is an art form that began in the West and later gained influence in the East. In the years after World War II, Abstract Expressionism became the catalyst in the transition of modern art in Asia. In Malaysia, with the advocacy of Abstract Expressionism and the spirit of Expressionism, abstract art became mainstream in the art scene since the 1950s. Abstract Expressionism from two different worlds—America and/or Europe and Malaysia—is different, especially in terms of the artists’ respective approach and creativity. This article discusses how the evolution of abstraction works through the artworks produced by Syed Ahmad Jamal, Yeoh Jin Leng, Latiff Mohidin, and Chew Teng Beng. This is followed by a discussion on the diversity of abstraction forms in Malaysian Abstract Expressionist art through the study of works by the aforementioned artists

Abstract:
Expressionism is a complex term with different meanings in different periods. When we think of Expressionism, we think of the trend of French Impressionism, or of a wave of art in Germany and Austria in the early 20th century. The term Expressionism has a wide connotation and can include many painters. The Expressionist works represented by Munch's "The Scream" in this paper have played an active role in promoting the development of Expressionism and made an important contribution to contemporary art. Today, with the diversified development of contemporary art, it is possible to analyze the field of design from the perspective of Expressionism and explore the development characteristics suitable for visual communication design. In this paper, the influence of Expressionism on visual communication design is explained, starting from the color expression and artistic characteristics of Expressionism.

Based on archival documents and materials of M. Gorky’s personal library, the article examines the question of the writer’s attitude to German expressionism, the brightest trend in German art of the early twentieth century. The facts of Gorky’s creative and personal contacts with leading German theater directors M. Reinhardt and E. Piscator, with revolutionary expressionist writers I. Becher, E. Toller, etc. Аre considered, the interest of the Russian writer in various types of German expressionist art is revealed: literature, theater, cinema and painting. The analysis of Gorky’s works in the context of the work of the German Expressionists reveals a certain similarity in their ideological and aesthetic views, reveals their common anti-war, protest and humanitarian pathos aimed at protecting the human person suffering in the world deformed by wars and revolutions.

Abstract:
The purpose of the article is to study the aesthetic principles of expressionism that influenced the development of modern architecture. An analysis of the concepts and means of artistic expression of the direction under study is proposed. The conditions for the emergence and formation of expressionism, its artistic methods of expression from conventionally realistic to abstract, as well as the manifestation of this direction of art in architectural design are considered. A brief analysis of the connection between expressionism and other parallel trends or movements of art of the twentieth century is given. Variations of expressionism from the standpoint of abstract art are identified, where the search for interactivity between the artist and the viewer in the process of visual perception of the painting is indicated. It is concluded that imagination is one of the main ways of artistic thinking in the process of author’s artistic design. The manifestation of the aesthetic principles of expressionism in the architecture of individual countries is considered. It has been revealed that expressionism in architecture is characterized by a departure from traditional forms in order to achieve the maximum emotional impact on the recipient. The study of the stated topic allows us to draw a conclusion about the relevance of expressionism at the beginning of the 21st century, which, with its traditions, continues the achievements of expressionism of the 20th century. and at the same time gives a new impetus to artistic expressions of the personal views of artists and architects on the ongoing processes in society. Parallels of the beginning of the 20th – beginning of the 21st centuries. revealed similarities in the aesthetic principles of the formation of the subject-spatial architectural environment. Expressionist techniques, means and methods of working on a painting or object are most accurately able to express the feelings of artists and architects, their psychological stress, the conviction that the viewer must go through a new experience while looking at an architectural or artistic work.

Abstract:
Arthur Rimbaud and Dramatic Expressionism The aim of this paper is to analyse some characteristics of the art of poetry by Rimbaud in the context of dramatic expressionism. The expressionist movement seems in fact to have inherited some concepts and motifs from the new aesthetic introduced by Rimbaud (poetic language revolution, a very personal vision of art where all the elements of the fictional world seem subordinated to fluctuations of the author’s psyche, subjectivism which abolishes the rules of the Aristotle’s mimesis, etc.). This new analytic perspective is particularly interesting because we can easily find realisation of the Rimbaudian vision of the new art of poetry in some pieces by such expressionist dramatic authors as Strindberg, Lenormand or Pellerin.

Abstract:
The main purpose of this research paper is to show how Expressionism is influential to postwar American literature, especially to the one-act play entitled Trifles (1916) written by Susan Glaspell (1876-1948). America witnessed a new period of special culture and art during the second half of the twentieth century, especially after the second world war. The traditional forms of art have failed to satisfy the wishes and aspirations of the new artists who deliberately look for new forms to express their attitudes towards the new state of life to be lived after grave wars that have caused humanity great losses on many and various levels. Thus, they have felt the need to break away with the existing traditional modes of expression. Hence, there appears new dramatic movements like existentialism, surrealism and Expressionism. The latter movement advocates the expression of the enthusiastic emotional state of the artist reacting to the anxieties of the modern world. The title one-act play Trifles can be regarded as a very well example illustrating the aims of this new movement and anticipating its appearance.

Abstract:
The relevance of the research topic is conditioned by the need to search for new interdisciplinary approaches to the problem of cognition of the world. The degree of scientific development of the subject covers the period from antiquity to modern times. Vasilyeva E.V., Khazieva E.V., Petrenko Yu.A., Shatilov S.F., Stoletov A.I. actively works on the problem of subjective reality. It should also be noted that the works devoted directly and directly to the study of subjective re-ality within the framework of the existence of a work of art exist relatively few in comparison with studies of other aspects of art. The object of research is the current issues of cognition of the world order. As the subject of re-search, the subjective reality that the author creates in the space of a work of art is chosen. The study is based on the material of the paintings of the Krasnoyarsk painter Tolmashov (1966–2014). The aim of the research is to reveal the essence, specificity and ways of forming subjective reali-ty in a work of art. In accordance with the purpose of the study, the following tasks are set: to deter-mine the motivation and principles of constructing a sub-reality in a work of fine art. The basis of the methodological base was laid as general scientific principles, as well as special art research methods, including: formal-stylistic, iconographic and structural. When working on the study, the determining method was a method of scientific cognition as an interpretation that allows us to reveal the principles of the construction and existence of subjective reality. Structural-functional and dialectical methods are also used. The empirical basis of the study is the experience of studying the paintings of the Krasnoyarsk artist E.N. Tolmashova. The scientific novelty of the research consists in the following statement: the subjective of reality in pictorial works is conditioned by the desire of the author of the work through the experimental con-struction of new, not previously existed realities, to understand the structure of objective reality exist-ing in addition to his consciousness. The obtained conclusions and generalizations of the basic principles of subjective of objective reality in a work of fine art can be used in the analysis of artistic creativity as a way of constructing an analog model of the world order. Also it should be said that the work of E.N. Tolmashova is not well studied in art history. The scientific material has been introduced not previously studied material, allowing expanding the under-standing of the art of painting in Siberia, as well as the trends and forms of its development at the turn of the XX and XXI century. The materials of the research were used in lecturing and conducting seminars on the discipline “Art culture of Siberia”, which is basic for the preparation of bachelors on specialty 54.03.01. The training was conducted on the basis of the Siberian Federal University.

Abstract:
This project explores the basic tenets of abstract expressionism and is considered in relation to the idea of the sublime, limitlessness and the formless. In this research I am interested in investigating the progression from two-dimensional non-representational painting, through experimentation with light mediating materials to projection of the painting via the medium of film. Light is used to intensify the image with a view to expand the viewer’s awareness and understanding of the sublime. The research seeks to find ways that allow the viewer to explore the feeling of uncertainty and the sensation of wonderment. Through an ephemeral spaciousness that has no boundaries, the spectator is encouraged through contemplation to transform their experiences of the finite in order to approach the infinite and the sublime.

Inger Ekdahl was a female painter at the center of Swedish Abstract Expressionism in the fifties. This essay investigates how her art was received in Stockholm and Paris. We conclude that although her type of art dominated the avant-garde in Paris during the late fifties, she was too early for the Swedish avant-garde and did not amass enough support to transform it. The analysis used Actor-Network Theory following Latour.

Full text
Abstract:
This thesis offers a new way to conceptualize Hermann Max Pechstein’s “primitivism” as a kind of ethnographic “primitivism.” By creating a constellation that connects Pechstein’s Nidden and Palau-based projects, Paul Gauguin’s “primitivist” aesthetic, and the research produced by German ethnographers, I argue that the “documentary” nature of Pechstein’s work paradoxically merges the “scientific” aspects of ethnography with his, and more generally, other Expressionists’ interest in the “primitive.” In addition, the following work demonstrates that the purportedly “scientific” representations and visual accounts of South Seas natives that ethnographers like Otto Finsch produced in the late 1800s and early 1900s heavily and problematically relied on an aestheticization of these foreign people that renders them as decorative, “exotic” objects, which are in many ways subjugated to the gaze of and “on display” for the Westerners examining them. This thesis ultimately focuses on how Pechstein’s representations of people from Palau effectively combine the style typical of most Expressionists and an impulse towards ethnographic depiction not seen in the work of his Brücke colleagues.

Abstract:
Viennese Expressionism 1909-1913 encompasses parallel evolutions in the disciplines of visual arts and music. Ideas from fin-de-siecle Vienna's intellectual milieu inspired the awakening of the Modern artist, from Ur-schrei to the formation of a new aesthetic theory. In this thesis, I examine the origin of iconic Expressionist aesthetic values and their technical expression in works by Arnold Schoenberg, Egon Schiele, Oskar Kokoschka, and Wassily Kandinsky. Topics covered are divided into two broad thematic categories whose central tenets originate in preoccupations with, on the one hand, an emerging understanding of the unconscious and psychic pathology; and on the other hand, the metaphysical components to art and the human experience: sickness and spirituality. While it is not possible to compare directly art and musical works, common ideas and principles provide conceptual intersections that unify the disciplines in the realization of a collective artistic vision.

Abstract:
Expressionism was the major literary and art form in Germany beginning in the early 20th century. It flourished before and during World War I and continued to be the dominant art for of the Early Weimar Republic. By 1924, Neue Sachlichkeit replaced Expressionism as the dominant art form in Germany. Many Expressionists claimed they were never truly apart of Expressionism. However, in the periodization and canonization many of these young artists are labeled as Expressionist. This thesis examines the periodization and canonization of Expression in art, drama, and film and proves that Expressionism began much earlier than scholars believe and ended much later than 1924. This thesis examines the conflicts in Germany that led to Expressionism and which authors and artists influenced Expressionists. It will also show that after Expressionism ceased to be the dominant art form in Germany, many former Expressionists continued to use expressionistic form in their works but ceased to use expressionistic content. This thesis argues that both the periodization and canonization of Expressionism should be expanded to include all works that may be classified as having expressionistic form.

Abstract:
This thesis explores how fusion of dance and painting is a creative process in the traditional Indian theatrical dance of Kathakali. The thesis argues that fusion is a powerful creative process in this art form, and identifies (in Chapters 2, 3 and 4) the goal, conditions and techniques that contribute to this process. This study was triggered in part by my own visual practice. As an Expressionist artist I attempt to fuse dance and painting. I locate the notion of fusion in the Expressionist movement and in the work of three contemporary artists, including my own. The devices used in Kathakali would illuminate the artist who is engaged in the fusion of dance and painting.

Abstract:
The creation of the plastic artist Nicolae Tonitza is focused on two components - theoretical and artistic. Theoretically, Tonitza worked as an artistic columnist and publicist for various magazines and newspapers "Cuvântul liber", "Facla", "Socialismul" and others. His chronicles initially had a polemical character with a sociopolitical accent, and later, a "stylistic" one, with a national aspect. The artistic activity is focused on two genres graphics and painting. The thematic register is varied and includes military and social subjects, portraits of children, nudes, landscapes, the reason for the holiday etc. Stylistically, his creation reveals affinities of expressionism, Cezannian cubism, folk art, etc.

Abstract:
Творческий метод польского художника, философа, математика, логика и теоретика искусства Леона Хвистека (1884–1944 гг.) формировался в контексте ведущих европейских художественных тенденций первой четверти XX в. Восприняв опыт экспрессионизма, кубизма, орфизма и футуризма, к 1922 г. мастер пришел к созданию собственной художественной системы. Стрефизм стал первым этапом на пути развития польского абстрактного искусства. The artist’s method of Leon Chwistek (1884–1944), Polish artist, philosopher, mathematician, logician and art theorist, was formed in the context of leading european artistic trends of the first quarter of the ХХ century. Having embraced the experience of expressionism, cubism, orphism and futurism, by 1922 the painter came to create his own artistic system. Strefism was the first stage in the development of Polish abstract art.

Abstract:
Contemporary artists have included classical methods together with innovative digital printing technologies to their artistic manufactures and thus their technological production interactions have been reflected on current art as well. Today’s artists have also been in collaboration with each other by involving the digital printing technologies which kept advancing during the recent 20 years in their works of art just like Degas and Manzi did in their relationships of production partnerships in 19th Century. Besides, those opinions which originated from modernism ideas and movements consist of the core of this cooperation post Industrial Revolution era. Therefore, the concept of nationalism, the devastating consequences of the world wars and the latest industrial and technological advancements have all transformed human life irreversibly. Consequently, during this transformation era, various significant movements of art such as Impressionism and Expressionism emerged in the 20th century and representatives of those art movements substituted such a lot of printmaking practices in their works of art. None of those mentioned above took place in other previous movements of art. They reflected their points of view that they display social movements and none of the other artists who represent other senses of art have ever exhibited such a lot of printmaking practices. Thus, various printing technologies which present a new laboratory environment to the artists. As a result of this, printing technologies have been preferred as a sort of new artistic media value and it started to take its prominent place in collections of art as well as in museums during artistic presentations. Within this context, this article aims at studying the phenomenon of art by considering how it has changed during the historical process by examining those works of art which reveal these variations. Common production and working techniques in traditional printmaking, contributions of the technological advantages to the artistic manufacture. Besides, periodical innovations will be examined and presented by introducing an updated point of view to the topic within the content of this article that contain some citations from the second part of the thesis titled “Effects of fine art printmaking on the phenomenon of contemporary art”.

Abstract:
The study of expressions of filiation has already been the subject of several articles, which were limited to periods prior to the Third Intermediate Period. The aim of this article is to evaluate these expressions within the specific framework of the Books of the Dead from the 21st and 22nd Dynasties. These periods are marked by a significant increase in the variety of expressions employed, whereas the New Kingdom manuscripts expressed filiation according to a more uniform and rigid scheme. Similarly to what happens with titles and despite the diversity of expressions, one observes a progressive decrease in the mention of filiation which almost disappears from funerary papyri, while long genealogies on temple statues are developing. This contribution attempts to understand the motivations behind the use of these expressions and more generally to grasp their purpose in expressing the identity of the deceased.

Abstract:
This study examines Mozambican popular music to investigate three questions: Are notions of empowerment and accountability present in popular music in Mozambique? If so, what can these existing notions of empowerment and accountability reveal about relations between citizens and state institutions in general and about citizen-led social and political action in particular? In what ways is popular music used to support citizen mobilisation in Mozambique? The discussion is based on an analysis of 46 protest songs, interviews with musicians, music producers and event promoters as well as field interviews and observations among audiences at selected popular music concerts and public workshops in Maputo city. Secondary data were drawn from radio broadcasts, digital media, and social networks. The songs analysed were widely played in the past two decades (1998–2018), a period in which three different presidents led the country. Our focus is on the protest song, conceived as those musical products that are concerned with public affairs, particularly public policy and how it affects citizens’ social, political and economic life, and the relationship between citizens and the state.

Shaba, Varteen Hannah. Translating North-Eastern Neo-Aramaic Idioms into English. Institute of Development Studies, January 2023. http://dx.doi.org/10.19088/creid.2023.002.

Full text
Abstract:
North-eastern Neo-Aramaic (also known as NENA) languages and literature are a prosperous and encouraging field of research. They abound with oral traditions and expressions that incorporate various spoken forms including everyday language, tales, songs, chants, prayers, proverbs, and more. These are used to transfer culture, knowledge, and community values. Some types of oral forms are idioms and fixed expressions. Idioms are extremely problematic to translate for a number of reasons, including: cultural and linguistic differences between languages; their specific connection to cultural practices and interpretations, and the difficulty of transferring the same meanings and connotations into another language with accuracy. This paper explores how to define and classify idioms, and suggests specific strategies and procedures to translate idioms from the NENA dialect Bartella (a local Aramaic dialect in Nineveh Plain) into English – as proposed by Baker (1992: 63–78). Data collection is based on 15 idioms in Bartella dialect taken from the heritage play Khlola d baretle teqta (Wedding in the old Bartella). The findings revealed that only three strategies are helpful to transfer particular cultural conceptualisations: using an idiom of similar meaning and form; using an idiom of similar meaning but different form, and translation by paraphrasing. Based on the findings, the author provides individuals and institutions with suggestions on how to save endangered languages and dialects, particularly with regard to the religious minorities’ heritage. Key among these recommendations is encouraging researchers and scholars to direct translation projects and activities towards preserving minority languages with their oral heritage and cultural expressions, which are susceptible to extinction.

Abstract:
This Letter considers probability density functions (pdfs) involving products of the complex amplitudes observed at two points (which may, in general, involve separations in space, time, or frequency) in conditions of fully saturated scattering. First, the pdf is derived for the product of the complex amplitude at one point with the conjugate of the complex amplitude at another point. It is shown that the real and imaginary parts of this product each have a variance gamma pdf. Second, expressions are derived for several joint pdfs involving complex amplitude products and powers at two points.

Abstract:
The article provides a study of the standard aspect of vocabulary usage in Ukrainian newspaper publications. The language quality in newspaper publications is an important and topical problem. The paper puts special emphasis on the language of the media which needs to be normative. The research is predetermined by the need to establish word meanings (based on the editorial practice), which is not specifically delineated in the reference literature, and to give variants of their proper usage. It is emphasized that the accuracy of word usage depends on the availability, aesthetic impact and effectiveness of newspaper publications. The research analyses proper usage of linguistic expressions in different publications of «DEN’», «DZERKALO TYZHNYA», «EXPRESS» newspapers, particularly the usage of nouns TENSION (napruha), DIFFERENCE (riznytsia), NUMBER (chyslo). Meanings of all these words are not explicitly delineated in the reference literature. There are a lot of doubts about the proper usage of these linguistic expressions in the editorial work. Certain Recommendations regarding the correct usage of researchable forms have been suggested. The analysis of defining dictionaries, translation dictionaries, thesaurus as well as other reference books, is based on the acquired editorial experience, that enables to define the meaning of the lexems TENSION (napruha), DIFFERENCE (riznytsia), NUMBER (chyslo) under the study and to suggest correct compliant forms to the selected examples of their usage in the publications of «DEN’», «DZERKALO TYZHNYA», «EXPRESS» newspapers (over 70 sentence constructions).

Abstract:
The article a study of the standard aspect of vocabulary usage in modern Ukrainian newspaper publications. Based on the analysis of the reference literature, the article examines the cases of conjugation of the noun quantity with the verbs to increase and to grow, as well as to decrease, to lower, to shrink, to fall in the publications of the newspaper «Den’». This newspaper is one of the most popular publications in the rating of national media. There are a lot of doubts about the proper usage of these linguistic expressions in the editorial work. The research is predetermined by the need to establish word meanings (based on the editorial practice), which is not specifically delineated in the reference literature, and to give variants of their proper usage. It is accented that the noun quantity should be used with the verbs to increase/decrease. It is noted that to indicate the amount of someone or something, the word quantity should be written, not a number. The selected examples (about 40 sentence constructions) are given the correct answers. Linguistic literacy of an individual as well as of a society in general and opinion expression depends on the selection of linguistic expressions by journalists, since linguistic mistakes in periodical newspapers, radio or TV tend to spread through the language and are required subconsciously. It is emphasized that the accuracy of word usage depends on the availability, aesthetic impact and effectiveness of newspaper publications. In doing this, one must note the at times highly disparaging tone of the European explorers, the dark deeds they committed, and their racist expressions and bias, which may offend some readers. This report provides an extensive, period-specific historical account of the Martuwarra people’s connections to their Country as a point of departure and a premise for discussion contrasting Aboriginal perspectives and the development lens of the State. In doing so, this report also juxtaposes the events of the past with the continued contemporary imposition of development strategies still at odds with Aboriginal life-ways

Shlaymoon Toma, Shivan. A Study of Food and Drink Metaphors in Iraqi Syriac. Institute of Development Studies, August 2022. http://dx.doi.org/10.19088/creid.2022.002.

Full text
Abstract:
This study investigates the ways in which Syriac native speakers from Iraq conceptualise their understandings of various abstract domains, feelings, emotions, actions, customs, traditions and practices through their experiences of the concrete fields of food and drink metaphors. The conceptual metaphor theory (1980) by Lackoff and Johnson has been adopted for the data analysis. A focus group discussion (FGD) was employed as a tool for data collection and 43 idiomatic food and drink expressions were collected from this. Five native Syriac speakers from various regions and of different genders, ages, tribes and nationalities participated in the discussion. The study shows that Syriac speakers use many food and drink metaphors in their everyday language. The study concludes that food and drink metaphors are used by Syriac speakers mostly to conceive abstract concepts related to feelings, attitudes and emotions. The study shows that foods and drinks are strongly rooted in the Assyrian and Chaldean culture and many traditional dishes are used in its vernacular language as metaphors.
