Full textThe construction of idiom signification necessitates a special strategy. A large number of idioms prove to be figurative in nature. They were at the beginning mere creative metaphors that survived by frequent use and acquired a new status that of idiomaticity. This figurative character offers a special case of study to demonstrate the motivation of this kind of idioms referred to as idiomatic expressions. This thesis exploits this figure in the case of the idiomatic expressions containing body parts and abstract nouns to show that not all idioms are non-compositional as it was largely assumed by traditional linguistic theories. In this work, the identification of idioms encoding metaphorical analogy comes as a first step before their processing. Can linguistic clues be used to identify this category of idioms? How does metaphor function in the construction of figurative meaning? In addition to this, this work refers to the theory of G. Lakoff (1987) who assumed that idiomatic expressions are motivated by conceptual metaphors of the type “A is B”. In order to construct the figurative meaning of an expression it is necessary to construct the underlying conceptual metaphor that will structure the implicit analogy. However, this work is complex in a conversational situation. Hence, the work consists instead in constructing the figurative meaning without obligatory constructing the conceptual metaphor. The contribution of linguistic clues, namely the verb, the preposition, the aspect, the adverbs, etc. And the typical syntagmatic combinations are subject to study. Significant findings are obtained from the linguistic study. The work consists also in understanding whether the linguistic study is sufficient by it self to account for the figurative status of an expression or that the conceptual knowledge we have on the idiomatic constituents is required

This research was aimed at describing the meanings of an idiom's element that plays important role in idiom interpretation and use, by raising the question of various non-literal forms evolves with a particular context as graphic novels. This work focuses on a systemic analysis of idiom types, the evidence relating to one major classes of idiom comprehension models: non-composition models, which assume the compositional meanings of phrases and sentences are routinely generated and used in the development of 25 graphic novels; the items are considered as one opportunity to better understand the structure of the idiom

In this work, with an essentially lexicographic feature, focused on the current language in order to present a model for a Brazilian Portuguese idiom dictionary from an onomasiologic view. It is extremely important to display the analogous or synonymy relations between the idioms which belong to the same fields. We were able to verify that, although many idioms subsumed under the same concept are basically synonyms, their use is governed by the nuances that distinguish them.

Full textTo examine the translation of idiomatic expressions (IE) in context, we set our study within the framework of communication. Our work has started from the following observation : in Cambodia, there’s always a misconception according to which an IE is systematically translated by an IE, an idiomatic phrase or a pre-established correspondence. This tendency is explained by the concern of stylistic correspondence. And yet, in the uses associated to different meanings, we suppose that an IE comes to different translations. The present work aims both at disproving this misconception and confirming the universality of the interpretative theory, source of the strategies applicable to all translations, including translating IE from French into Khmer language. IE are much less used in written documents in Khmer than in French. To reach our purpose, we have based our study on the interpretative theory, the SkoposTheory and discourse analysis in particular. Ten IE, classified from the less to the more transparent, in one hundred extracts mainly taken out from newspapers, were first analysed to understand the meaning, find connections and nuances of meaning of the same IE, and subsequently to suggest adequate translations. Following the assessments resulting from this exercise, a set of recommendations has been proposed in order to contribute to the questioning of the translation methods in Cambodia

Full textThroughout this study we try to work out the symbolism associated with the human body in Tashelhit and to bring out the main dimensions of this broad semantic field. We thus develop a model of semantic analysis for both proverbs and idiomatic expressions, applicable to a large array of corpus. We propose a detailed description of semantic and symbolic values associated with the lexicon related to the organs of the human body in Tashelhit, and describe the functioning of these lexemes in a context of paremiology, by putting forward a model of semantic analysis anchored in the concepts of proverbial motif and scenography. Their inherent metamorphism confers the lexical entities the function of figurative emblems, able of reaching the high generic level of maxims, essential for an explication of the proverb's "formular" meaning, and for grasping its practical and moral stake. In the same time, we are interested in idioms and phraseology, as cultural and social phenomena allowing us to understand semantic mechanisms specific to the language and to apprehend its linguistic and cultural specificities. We thus wish to contribute, in the field of lexical studies, a new approach where idiomatic expressions and proverbs can be brought together with so-called denotative meanings within a holistic model. This work is also a contribution to the field of Amazigh (Berber) studies. Our approach favours a global view, and involves a practical dimension, dealing with philological and dictionary description

Full textThe object of this study is to describe and explain the structural and semantic properties of french idioms -especially those with verbal heads within the framework of generative grammar referred to as "government and binding theory". A theory of idiomatic expressions is developed. It includes on the one hand an exhaustive analysis of idiomatic features, and on the other, an explanatory model for the semantic interpretation of free idioms as opposed to fixed idioms. In particular it is assumed that a free idiom with verbal head is interpreted similarly to a mono-lexical predicative expression. That is, the relational and conceptual properties of such a construct, expressed respectively by its verbal head and nominal complement, are embodied in the syntactic structure of the free idiom. The theory developed herein sheds a new light on some current issues in generative linguistics, especially those addressing the modularity of grammar. Relations between the lexicon, syntax and semantics are also reconsidered
