Abstract:
With the rise and improvement of artificial intelligence technology, the express delivery industry has become more intelligent. At the terminal of modern logistics, each dispatch center has hundreds of express mail deliveries to be dispatched every day, and the number of dispatchers is far less than the number of express mail deliveries. How to assign scientific tasks to each courier dispatch is the main target of this paper. The purpose is to make the number of tasks between the various couriers in the express center roughly the same in each cycle, so that there is a more balanced income between the couriers. In the simulation experiment, the delivery addresses are clustered according to the balanced k-means algorithm. Then, the ant colony algorithm is used to plan the delivery order of the express items in each class. Then, the time cost model is established according to the delivery distance of the express items in each class and the delivery mode of the express items to calculate the delivery time cost. Through a large amount of experimental data, the standard deviation of delivery time cost of each courier gradually decreases and tends to stabilize, which suggests that this method has a good effect on the dispatching task assignment of the express center. It can effectively make the delivery workload between the distributors roughly the same, and improve the delivery efficiency of the courier, save energy, and promote sustainable development.

The express industry has developed rapidly as e-commerce is becoming to be more and more popular. The contradiction between express delivery industry and postal universal service obligation is inevitable. A collection standard of universal service fund currently has a larger dispute. This article constructs a stackelberg game model based on the dominant operator and competitive postal operator through the theoretical analysis with the postal and courier companies "asymmetric" competition, and the rationality of the fund is discussed according to the express delivery business to impose and standard, etc. Using the method of reverse solving equilibrium results, it shows that the scheme has certain feasibility, but levy must be relevant conditions.

As for Chinese express industry, it is high time to effectively protect consumers private information. Nowadays, the popular solution is to take two-dimensional codes as the carrier to directly encrypt and store consumers private information. However, this paper hasnt followed the old routine and seperated the privacy flow from the courier and item flow. Based on the Mobile Internet, Android Application and Cloud Storage, it redesigns traditional courier receipt, stores consumers private information in securer Cloud servers and realizes the Zero Rate of Exposure of consumers private information in the circulating process with two-dimensional codes as the key entrance connecting online servers and offline users. After practical tests, this system succeeds in securing the circulation of consumers privacy on courier receipts. Whats more, it can automatically update logistic information and improve the efficiency of sorting and delivering.

Abstract:
With the rapid development of the courier industry, customers are placing higher demands on the cost and delivery time of courier services. Therefore, this paper focuses on the bi-objective express transportation network design problem (BO-ETNDP) to minimize the operation cost and maximum arrival time. A multi-structure parallel design methodology (MS-PDM) is proposed to solve the BO-ETNDP. In this methodology, all topological structures commonly used in designing transportation networks are sorted out. For each topological structure, a novel bi-objective nonlinear mixed-integer optimization model for BO-ETNDP is developed considering the impact of the hub’s sorting efficiency on the operation cost and arrival time. To solve these models, a preference-based multi-objective algorithm (PB-MOA) is devised, which embeds the branch-and-cut algorithm and Pareto dominance theory in the framework of this ranking algorithm. In the case study, the applicability of the proposed methodology is verified in a real-world leading express company. The results show that our methodology can effectively avoid the limitation of solving the BO-ETNDP with a specific structure. Besides, the suitable topology for designing express transportation networks in different scenarios are explored through the sensitivity analysis.

Abstract:
Where kosher goods and services were once a local business, kosher food is now a multibillion-dollar industry with a massive international infrastructure. The process of kashrut’s industrialization over the course of the twentieth century has created new ethical challenges that invite us to ask again about the meaning of long-held Jewish values. This chapter considers how the mitzvah (commandment) of loving the neighbor might be expressed and how it failed to be enacted in the high-profile scandals at Agriprocessors kosher slaughter plant in Postville, Iowa, the largest glatt kosher slaughter facility in North America. Going beyond describing the problem, this chapter argues for an extension of traditional Jewish understandings of loving the neighbor and asks what the kosher industry might be like if it followed the lead of ethical business leaders like Aaron Feuerstein instead of taking the destructive path that Agriprocessors followed ultimately to its bankruptcy.

Abstract:
This chapter examines the social contradictions and the inability of the government to solve the main political problems that led to the deep socio-political crisis of Russia in the early 20th century. This was expressed in the struggle of the workers against the autocratic police system, in the creation of radical, left-wing political parties and liberal opposition unions, in disputes within the ruling elite, and fluctuations in the government's course. All these sociopolitical contradictions and problems were aggravated in the conditions of the deep economic crisis that Russia, like all other European powers, experienced in the early 20th century. Particular attention is drawn to the fact that in the late 19th to early 20th centuries in Russia, as in other capitalist countries, monopolistic associations in industry, commerce, and transport became widespread.

Abstract:
A century of mining turned South Africa's Rand inside out, producing colossal tailings piles that bisect the city of Johannesburg. Apartheid intensified the discrimination wrought by mine dust, placing millions of Black residents downwind of the dump band. Still today, winter winds blow radioactive dust from these piles into the homes and lungs of some 1.6 million urban residents. Over the course of the twentieth century, residual governance made the problems worse. Dust mitigation measures and other efforts at remediation were racist by design, etching racial capitalism onto Black bodies. This chapter tacks between the weak remediation attempts of industry experts and the portrayals of artists such as Ernest Cole, who expressed the power and experience of the dumps through photography and poetry. One dump, which had been turned into a drive-in movie theater for whites, became a flashpoint for the politics of heritage in postapartheid South Africa.

Abstract:
There can be no doubt that the discovery and widespread use of fossil fuels has driven massive economical and societal developments. It started with coal. Although oil and gas became important thereafter, coal never really lost its position of prominence, although the tide may have turned in very recent years (Figure 1.2). The use of fossil fuels is familiar to virtually everybody on the planet, and a massive global corporate infrastructure exists to ensure its supply and distribution. In addition, petrochemical products are essential base materials for much of the manufacturing industry (e.g., plastics, synthetics, solvents, etc.). Virtually all of humanity has thus become thoroughly dependent on fossil fuels and other petrochemical products. We feel in our comfort zone with them. The very closely interwoven relationship between the modern way of life and fossil fuels and other petrochemicals, the emotive comfort- zone issue, and direct financial interests are key to the strong reactions that commonly follow whenever external carbon emissions are identified as an urgent problem. I hope that this book has provided you with a deeper understanding of the concepts and observations behind the concerns expressed by researchers. The role of CO2 in climate could perhaps be defined a little more sharply in the fine details, but the big lines are clear. And the big lines are all we need to appreciate where we stand today. Using just a few simple numbers about the potential consequences of the modern CO2 levels, with examples from the past, and equally simple numbers about the sheer quantities of carbon involved, everyone can get their heads around the scale of the problem. By similarly working out the scale of the required remedial measures in basic terms, we have seen that our most advisable course of action is to create a zero emissions society at the very soonest. Because there has been inaction for so long already, positive action on a truly global scale has now become a matter of the greatest urgency. This zero emission society is critical for stopping the unnaturally rapid rise in CO2 levels and stabilizing them to a level as close to today’s 400 ppm as we can.

Abstract:
<div class="section abstract"><div class="htmlview paragraph">The courier express parcel service industry (CEP industry) has experienced significant changes in the recent years due to increasing parcel volume. At the same time, the electrification of the vehicle fleets poses additional challenges. A major advantage of battery electric CEP vehicles compared to internal combustion engine vehicles is the ability to regenerate the kinetic energy of the vehicle in the frequent deceleration phases during parcel delivery. If the battery is cold, the maximum regenerative power of the powertrain is limited by a reduced chemical reaction rate inside the battery. In general, the maximum charging power of the battery depends on the state of charge and the battery temperature. Due to the low power demand for driving during CEP operation, the battery self-heating is comparably low. Without active conditioning of the battery, potential of regenerating energy is partially lost because the friction brake needs to absorb kinetic energy whenever the cold battery’s limit is exceeded. This paper proposes an optimization-based strategy for the battery thermal management of CEP vehicles. The tradeoff between the cost of battery heating and the benefit of regenerative braking is investigated under cold ambient conditions. For this purpose, a nonlinear model predictive control approach is developed to maximize the overall vehicle efficiency depending on the upcoming driving task by selective battery heating. The evaluation shows that the increase in overall efficiency depends on the electric efficiency of the battery heating system, the ambient conditions, the intensity and frequency of the deceleration phases, and the usage behavior of the vehicle. Based on the assumption that the driving cycle and ambient conditions can be accurately predicted, the model-in-the-loop simulation indicates a reduction in energy consumption of up to 3.3 % with an electric coolant heater and up to 9.6 % with an ambient heat pump.</div></div>

Abstract:
Abstract The integration of Application-Driven Data Analytics into Engineering and Engineering Technology courses has become increasingly important due to the growing significance of data in the modern industry. This research aims to explore the potential of introducing new application-driven data analytics modules to advance the teaching effectiveness of the existing fundamental Engineering and Engineering Technology courses in undergraduate education. This pilot project involves one study module called “The Value of Data Analytics in Engineering” in a Machine Design course at Miami University Engineering Technology Department and a Data Analytics Programming course at Oklahoma State University Industrial Engineering & Management School. The lecture in this module includes topics of data collection, manipulation, analysis, and visualization. A lab session is also conducted to analyze the collected tensile test data using Python programming, where various analyses are performed to understand the material properties of the test samples. These analyses include stress-strain curves learning and visualization, material properties calculation, and results comparison to reference data. To gather feedback on the effectiveness of this new study module, students are given surveys after the lectures and lab sessions. The surveys focus on the outcomes of this approach in helping students understand the course material, the ease of tools usage, and the student’s interests in learning further of Data Analytics topics in their future courses. In total 39 students are surveyed for feedback on the lecture and lab session. Overall, the feedback gathered from the students indicates that the approach has been effective. The survey results show that 72% of the students have gained better understanding of data analytics, and 79% of the students are interested in integrating more of the topics into existing curriculum. The use of Python in Google Colab has also been well received by the students, with many finding them easy to use with limited prior data analytics programming experience. Additionally, the students have expressed the usefulness of the skills acquired in their future careers and are interested in learning more about the topics in their curriculum. Therefore, this pilot studies recommend that an application-driven data analytics module can be effectively integrated into more courses in Engineering and Engineering Technology curricula. The future research involves courses such as Introduction to Programming, Manufacturing Processes, Quality Control, Machine Design, Thermodynamics, and Materials Science.

Abstract:
Abstract As industrial competition intensifies, more emphasis is placed on increased productivity and reduction of cost. In every industry, a major component of manufacturing cost is associated with operation and maintenance expenses. Thus, there has been a significant interest expressed by industry in the development of means and methodologies for the reduction of operation and maintenance expenses. Unfortunately, most engineering students go through an engineering curriculum that does not contain any formal courses or training on monitoring and diagnostics. Issues such as cost of operation, technical manpower, maintenance, safety, availability of space, etc. are examples of important factors that prevent universities from establishing such facilities. This paper presents a new concept that overcomes such barriers and difficulties and introduces an engineering health monitoring and diagnostic curriculum by means of an integrated effort between academia and industry. The resulting real and virtual experimental facilities and curriculum in the area of health monitoring and on-line diagnostics are presented and described.

Abstract:
Abstract The oil and gas industry is transforming itself into a data-intensive industry with the addition of artificial engineering intelligence, cognitive computing, machine learning, internet of things and robotics. With the growth and expansion, various exponential technologies can carry the energy industry's transformation forward in the new era of cyber-automation and more so on the cyber-physical -automation. Blockchain technology can drastically streamline the current complex matrix of activities from seismic to production and abonnement. The existing integration and management of various disciplines is very expensive, requires several disciplines that are sometimes disjointed and siloed, and is exceedingly complex in the course of the digital well program and as we receive more and more data. With blockchain as a common technology, firms may more easily handle the many digital procedures, operational tasks, diverse vendors, production schedules, and supply chains that affect how the digital well program and schedules are made. In this paper, the full lifecycle system—which can serve as the lifecycle's template—is discussed. It can be housed on a permissioned blockchain. Blockchain has been discovered to streamline and facilitate open collaboration because to its inherent qualities of trustworthiness and transparent execution of transactions involving numerous parties. By making asset transactions transparent and flexible, it facilitates data sharing among several businesses, providers, and partners, making it simple to connect the real world to the digital one through the use of edge devices and cloud computing. This approach has been discovered to offer crucial characteristics of privacy and auditability while limiting ledger size, in addition to transparency and efficiency. In order to balance the competing demands of privacy and openness, peer identities are concealed from one another while they agree on transaction outcomes. Additionally, data will never be exchanged among blockchain peers without the owners' express permission. Blockchain is a decentralized peer-to-peer digital ledger technology that has a lot of promise for the digital well program. A local peer communicates with an associated anchor peer inside the global network and a common database like Open Subsurface Data Universe in the system, which is built for both intra- and inter-organizational transactions like Open Subsurface Data Universe (OSDU).

Abstract:
There has been a rapid increase over the past three decades in the use of computational fluid dynamics (CFD) analysis by industry as a tool to design and manufacture products. It is currently a vital part of the engineering process for many companies around the world, and utilized in nearly every manufacturing industry. Employers of engineering students who perform this type of analysis have expressed the need for students at the undergraduate or B.S. level to have some CFD experience. As a result, engineering programs in the United States have begun to respond to this need by developing new curriculum and by exposing students to the use of CFD for research. The level of incorporation and implementation of CFD into the undergraduate curriculum and research at institutions varies widely. The objective of this paper is to conduct a survey of the current use of CFD in the undergraduate curriculum within mechanical engineering departments in the United States. Twenty ABET accredited U.S. schools that offer a B.S. degree in mechanical engineering are investigated in this study that are a representative sample of engineering schools in the U.S. today in terms of admission standards, private versus public, predominate terminal degree, size, and geographic location. Topics investigated include if CFD classes are offered to undergraduates whether they are required or optional, when they are first introduced into the curriculum, number of credit hours dedicated to CFD, types of courses that include CFD, and whether commercial or in-house codes are utilized.

Abstract:
The most important feature that distinguishes the tourism sector from many sectors is that it has a labor-intensive structure. Therefore, the knowledge and skills of those working in this sector are important for the competitiveness of businesses. In this direction, tourism education curricula are developed on a practical basis. During the pandemic, the functioning of the tourism industry has come to a complete halt, so education has been moved to digital platforms. In this process, many application-based courses were suspended and these courses were started to be carried out on digital platforms. The aim of this study is to evaluate the views of students who receive tourism education in the pandemic process towards distance learning. The action research technique, one of the qualitative research methods, was used in the study. Action research is a method actively used by educators who take the role of researchers to systematically and scientifically obtain information and develop applications in various fields of education. The sample of the study consists of 24 students studying tourism in the 2020-2021 academic years. The research data were collected using a semi-structured interview technique. As a result of the research, while the students expressed positive opinions about distance learning, they stated that they lacked the application aspect, which is a necessity of tourism education. In addition, with the statements put forward, it is concluded that students improve themselves by participating in seminars and trainings with distance learning methods in many different countries in the pandemic process. Among the problems experienced, students stated that there is a lack of infrastructure.

Full text
Abstract:
This paper discusses use of the effective axial force concept in offshore pipeline design in general and in DNV codes in particular. The concept of effective axial force or effective tension has been known and used in the pipeline and riser industry for some decades. However, recently a discussion about this was initiated and doubt on how to treat the internal pressure raised. Hopefully this paper will contribute to explain the use of this concept and remove the doubts in the industry, if it exists at all. The concept of effective axial force allows calculation of the global behaviour without considering the effects of internal and/or external pressure in detail. In particular, global buckling, so-called Euler buckling, can be calculated as in air by applying the concept of effective axial force. The effective axial force is also used in the DNV-RP-F105 “Free spanning pipelines” to adjust the natural frequencies of free spans due to the change in geometrical stiffness caused by the axial force and pressure effects. A recent paper claimed, however, that the effect was the opposite of the one given in the DNV-RP-F105 and may cause confusion about what is the appropriate way of handling the pressure effects. It is generally accepted that global buckling of pipelines is governed by the effective axial force. However, in the DNV Pipeline Standard DNV-OS-F101, also the local buckling criterion is expressed by use of the effective axial force concept which easily could be misunderstood. Local buckling is, of course, governed by the local stresses, the true stresses, in the pipe steel wall. Thus, it seems unreasonable to include the effective axial force and not the true axial force as used in the former DNV Pipeline Standard DNV’96. The reason for this is explained in detail in this paper. This paper gives an introduction to the concept of effective axial force. Further it explains how this concept is applied in modern offshore pipeline design. Finally the background for using the effective axial force in some of the DNV pipeline codes is given.

Abstract:
The Data Science Technician Education Program (DataTEC) at Florida State College at Jacksonville (FSCJ) addresses the growing demand for Data Science skills training at the Associate's degree and technical certificate levels. As the first program in Florida to offer a Data Science technical certificate, DataTEC enables students to earn up to six industry-recognized certifications and two college credit certifications while pursuing their Associate's degree. From 2021-2023, 104 students, representing a diverse population of 45% women and 27% students of color, participated in six courses (Excel, Python, SAS, Java, and R) and completed self-efficacy surveys. Results indicated small but positive increases in students’ self-efficacy, particularly in Python and Excel courses. Notably, 67% of students expressed a desire to pursue careers in industry, with most students employed either full-time or part-time. Additionally, from 2021-2024, five faculty members participated in DataTEC’s Working Connections sessions, which provided professional development on topics such as SAS and R programming. These sessions, attended by 74 participants from 29 institutions across 19 states, included a focus on addressing unconscious bias and stereotype threat in teaching. A pre-and post-survey analysis demonstrated a significant improvement in faculty members' ability to identify unconscious bias and stereotype threat in Data Science education, highlighting the program’s broader impact on fostering more inclusive learning environments.

Mizrach, Amos, Sydney L. Spahr, Ephraim Maltz, Michael R. Murphy, Zeev Schmilovitch, Jan E. Novakofski, Uri M. Peiper, et al. Ultrasonic Body Condition Measurements for Computerized Dairy Management Systems. United States Department of Agriculture, 1993. http://dx.doi.org/10.32747/1993.7568109.bard.

Full text
Abstract:
The body condition (BC) score is recognized in the dairy industry as an essential tool for managing the energy reserves of the dairy cow, which is essential for sustaining optimal and efficient production over several lactations. The current use of BC scoring depends on the accuracy of subjective visual estimates, and this limits its kusefulness as a management aid in the dairy industry. A measuring tool that would frequently provide objective data on the cow's body reserves would be a major contribution to efficient dairy herd management. Ultrasonic sensors have the potential to be developed into an efficient BC measuring device, and the experimental use of such sensors for subcutaneous fat thickness (SDFT) estimates, as an indication for BC in beef cattle, supports this assumption. The purposes of this project were: 1. To compare visual BC scoring and ultrasonic fat thickness with on-line automated body weight (BW) measurements as monitors of nutritional adequacy of dairy cows at various stages of lactation. 2. To determine the effects of variation in digestive fill in early and late lactation on the accuracy of body weight measurements in lactating cows. 3. To modify an existing ultrasonic system and develop a specialized, low-cost sensor for repeatable determination of body condition scores by users with minimal training and skill. 4. To develop a standard for the assignment of body condition scores based on ultrasonic measurements of subdermal fat thickness. The procedure to execute these objectives involved: 1. Frequent measurement of BW, milk yield (MY), BC (visually scored) and subdermal fat thickness ultrasonically measured of dairy cows, and data analysis on average and individual basis. 2. Testing and selection of an appropriate special-purpose sensor, finding an optimum body location for working an ultrasonic measurement, prcessing the signals obtained, and correlating the resulting measurements with performance responses in lactating cows. Linking the ultrasonic signals to BC scores, and developing a BC scoring data acquisition system are the first steps towards fulfilling the necessary requirements for incorporating this device into an existing dairy herd management system, in order to provide the industry with a powerful managment tool. From the results obtained we could conclude that: 1. BC does not correlate with BW changes during all stages of lactation, although in general terms it does. These results were confirmed by individual cow BW and BC data obtained during the course of lactation, that were supported by individual objective ultrasonic measurement of SDFT. 2. BW changes reflect energy metabolism reliably ony after peak milk yield; early in lactation, a decrease in BW expresses mobilization of body reserves only qualitatively, and not quantitatively. 3. Gastrointestinal content increases throughout the whole period during which dry matter intake (DMI) increases. The drastic increase very early in lactation prevents the use of BW changes as a basis for quantitative estimatio of energy meatabolism; at this stage of lactation, konly a BC score or any other direct measurements willl provide a quantitative estimate of energy metabolism. 4. Ultrasonic measurements of subdermal fat thickness can be used to quantify changes that correlate with the actual condition of the cow, as assessed by performance and the traditional way of scoring. 5. To find the best site on the cow's body at which to obtain responses to BC and its changes in the course of lactation, additional sites have to be examined. From the present study, it seems that the sites between ribs 12 and 13 have the potential for this purpose. 6. The use of templates made it easier to repeat measurements at a desired site and spot. However, the convenient easy-to-handle way to standardize the measurement, described in this study, koffers scope for improvement. 7. The RF peak values of the A-mode are better indicators of the location of fat layer borders than image analysis, from the point of view of future commercial development. 8. The distances between the RF peaks of the A-mode can be automatically measured by suitable software, for future commercial development. 9. Proper analysis of daily body weight and milk yield data can provide the necessary information on body condition changes during lactation, until a direct BC measurement device is developed. 10. In any case, at least one visual BC assessment has to be done, preferably immediately after calving, for calibration purposes.

Abstract:
Abstract (one page maximum, single spaced), include: List the original objectives, as defined in the approved proposal, and any revisions made at the beginning or during the course of project: The main goal described in our original proposal has been the development of a molecular infectious clone of the avian metapneumovirus subtype B (aMPV-B) and the modification of this clone to create mutated viruses for the development of attenuated vaccines. The Achievements and Appendix/Part I sections of this report describes the accomplishments in creating such a molecular clone. These sections also contain the results of a longitudinal study that we made in Israel, demonstrating the infiltration of field strains of aMPV into vaccinated flocks and emphasizing the need for the development of better vaccines. We also describe our unexpected findings regarding the ability of aMPV to establish persistent infection in cell cultures. Although this direction of research was not described in the original proposal we feel that it is highly important for the understanding of aMPV pathogenesis. For example, this direction has provided us with evidence showing that aMPV replication can augment influenza replication. Moreover, we observed that viruses that were produced from chronically-infected cells show reduced ciliostasis. Accordingly, we carried vaccination trials using such viruses. In the original grant proposal we also offered that the American lab will clone and express immunomodulators in the context of an aMPV -based replicon that the Israeli lab has generated. However, as we reported in our annual reports, further analysis of this replicon by the Israeli lab has revealed that the level of expression achieved by this vehicle is relatively poor; thus, the American lab has focused on sequencing the genomes of different aMPV-C isolates that differ in their virulence (including vaccine strains). Achievements and Appendix/Part II sections of this report include the summary of this effort. Background to the topic: The aMPVs belong to the paramyxoviridae family and cause mild to severe respiratory tract diseases mainly in turkeys and also in chickens. Four aMPV subgroups, A, B, C and D, have been characterized; in Israel aMPV-A and B are the common subtypes while in the USA type C is the prevalent one. Although vaccine strains do exist for aMPVs, they do not always provide full protection against virulent strains and the vaccines themselves may induce disease to some extent. Improved vaccines against aMPV are needed, to achieve better protection of the poultry industry against this pathogen. Major conclusions, solutions, achievements: We isolated aMPV-B from a diseased flock and accomplished the sequencing and cloning of its full-genome. In addition, we cloned the four genes encoding the viral replicase. These should serve as the platform for generation of modified aMPV-Bs from molecular clones. We also identified aMPVs that are attenuated in respect to their ciliostatic activity and accordingly showed the potential of such viruses as vaccine strains. For aMPV-C, the different mutations scattered along the genome of different isolates with varied virulence have been determined. Implications, both scientific and agricultural: The newly identified pattern of mutations in attenuated strains will allow better understanding of the pathogenicity of aMPV and the generation of aMPV molecular clones, together with isolation of strains with attenuated ciliostatic activity should generate improved vaccine strains Abstract (one page maximum, single spaced), include: List the original objectives, as defined in the approved proposal, and any revisions made at the beginning or during the course of project: The main goal described in our original proposal has been the development of a molecular infectious clone of the avian metapneumovirus subtype B (aMPV-B) and the modification of this clone to create mutated viruses for the development of attenuated vaccines.
