Abstract:
Facing the growing amount of information in today's society, the task of specifying human knowledge in a way that can be unambiguously processed by computers becomes more and more important. Two acknowledged fields in this evolving scientific area of Knowledge Representation are Description Logics (DL) and Formal Concept Analysis (FCA). While DL concentrates on characterizing domains via logical statements and inferring knowledge from these characterizations, FCA builds conceptual hierarchies on the basis of present data. This work introduces Relational Exploration, a method for acquiring complete relational knowledge about a domain of interest by successively consulting a domain expert without ever asking redundant questions. This is achieved by combining DL and FCA: DL formalisms are used for defining FCA attributes while FCA exploration techniques are deployed to obtain or refine DL knowledge specifications.

Abstract:
As engineering systems grow in complexity so too must the design tools that we use evolve and allow for decision makers to efficiently ask questions of their model and obtain meaningful answers. The process of whitespace exploration has recently been developed to aid in engineering design and provide insight into a design space where traditional design exploration methods may fail. In an effort to further the research and development of whitespace exploration algorithms, a software package called Thalia has been created to allow for automated data collection and experimentation with the whitespace exploration methodology. In this work, whitespace exploration is defined and the current state of the art of whitespace exploration algorithms is reviewed. The whitespace exploration library Thalia along with a collection of benchmarking cases are described in detail. A set of experiments on the benchmark cases are run and analyzed to further understand the behavior of the algorithm and outline initial performance results which can later be used for comparison to aid in improving the methodology.

Lareau, David. "Haptic Image Exploration." Thesis, Université d'Ottawa / University of Ottawa, 2012. http://hdl.handle.net/10393/20556.

Full text
Abstract:
The haptic exploration of 2-D images is a challenging problem in computer haptics. Research on the topic has primarily been focused on the exploration of maps and curves. This thesis describes the design and implementation of a system for the haptic exploration of photographs. The system builds on various research directions related to assistive technology, computer haptics, and image segmentation. An object-level segmentation hierarchy is generated from the source photograph to be rendered haptically as a contour image at multiple levels-of-detail. A tool for the authoring of object-level hierarchies was developed, as well as an innovative type of user interaction by region selection for accurate and efficient image segmentation. According to an objective benchmark measuring how the new method compares with other interactive image segmentation algorithms shows that our region selection interaction is a viable alternative to marker-based interaction. The hierarchy authoring tool combined with precise algorithms for image segmentation can build contour images of the quality necessary for the images to be understood by touch with our system. The system was evaluated with a user study of 24 sighted participants divided in different groups. The first part of the study had participants explore images using haptics and answer questions about them. The second part of the study asked the participants to identify images visually after haptic exploration. Results show that using a segmentation hierarchy supporting multiple levels-of-detail of the same image is beneficial to haptic exploration. As the system gains maturity, it is our goal to make it available to blind users.

Abstract:
This thesis explores how women in different religious communities relate to the concept of Salvation. Focusing on Buddhism, Judaism, Islam, and Hinduism, this short experimental film, and supplement paper, seek to provide an alternative point of view that translates this unique experience for women in religions that use heavily gendered language and that are rooted in traditional patriarchal cultures. By using the experimental film medium, viewers are able to perceive religion and film in a new way that pushes the viewer to give their own interpretation of the imagery on screen. It also allows viewers to give the imagery meaning and to be submerged in the content of the film. This thesis is an exploration so it does not provide a concrete answer but it encourages a viewer to reevaluate their own spiritual beliefs and to take into consideration an alternative perspective.

Abstract:
The aim of this research was to investigate strategies for the support of design exploration, in particular, how computer based technology could contribute to this activity during the early phase of design. The research comprised of the design and development of three software prototypes, the later versions of which enabled discussions with design professionals concerning the underpinning approach of the work. Three case studies of design practice were undertaken. These focused on the interdependencies between freehand drawing, physical modelling and CAD. Based on the research it was concluded that computer based support for exploration during the early phase of design was viable and that the generation of alternative solutions played a key role in the process. Furthermore, the approach offered by shape grammars provided a generative mechanism that was both grounded in the discipline of design and amenable to representation in a computer based system. Finally, it was concluded that the introduction of a 'controlled irregularity' into the resulting design alternatives increased their likelihood of encouraging design exploration.

Kalinov, Pavel. "Intelligent Web Exploration." Thesis, Griffith University, 2012. http://hdl.handle.net/10072/365635.

Full text
Abstract:
The hyperlinked part of the internet known as "the Web" arose without much planning for a future of millions of publishers and countless pieces of online content. It has no in-built mechanism to find anything, so tools external to it were introduced: initially web directories and then search engines. Search engines are based on machine learning and have been extremely successful. However, they have some inherent limitations and cannot, by design, address some needs: they serve the "information locating" need only and not "information discovery". Search engine users have learned to accept them and in many cases do not realise how their search has been limited by shortcomings of the model. Before the advent of the search engine, web directories were the only information-finding tool on the web. They were manually built and could not compete economically with the effciency of search engines. This lead to their virtual extinction, with the effect that the "information discovery" need of users is no longer served by any major information provider. Furthermore, none of the dominant information-finding models account for the person of the user in any meaningful way controllable by (or even visible to) the user. This work proposes a method to combine a search engine, a web directory and a personal information management agent into an intelligent Web Exploration Engine in a way which bridges the gaps between these seemingly unrelated tools. Our hybrid, for which we have developed a proof-of-concept prototype [Kalinov et al., 2010b], allows users to both locate specific data and to discover new information. Information discovery is served by a web directory which is built with the assistance of a dynamic hierarchical classifier we developed [Kalinov et al., 2010a]. The category structure achieved by it is also the basis of a large number of nested search engines, allowing information locating both in general (similar to a "standard" search engine) and in a variety of contexts selectable by the user.

Abstract:
The first chapter explores an anachronistic Kantian critique of Plotinus wherein Plotinus' notion of the One and the soul's ascent to the One is discussed. In the second part of the chapter it will be argued that despite Plotinus' via negativa approach to the One, he commits what Kant calls a transcendental illusion. At this time, Kant's conditions of experience and knowledge are discussed, to show what constitutes as experience. Then, Kant's notion of transcendental illusion is discussed, specifically in its paralogistic and ideal forms. From this discussion, it is evident that Plotinus' idea of the soul is a paralogistic error and his idea of the One becomes the Ideal of pure reason, thereby mistaking the Ideal of the One as constituting ultimate existence. Following this Kantian critique, the second chapter discusses Úankara's view of Âtman. The exposition demonstrates that Úankara's approach is essentially via negativa, that while it is the most humble approach to Brahman, yet it is unable to account for the absolute reality that is essentially ineffable. This discussion focuses on Úankara's belief that people falsely attribute or superimpose qualities to the true Self, because of Avidyâ and that only true knowledge transforms Avidyâ into vidyâ or discriminating knowledge. After this discussion, some criticisms are discussed to show some apparent problems with Úankara's view. At which time, it will be argued that despite Úankara's use of via negativa he commits what Kant calls a "transcendental illusion." We do not have an empirical intuition of the concept of Brahman; therefore, we have neither access to the mystical reality of Brahman as a thing in itself, nor to true knowledge about ultimate reality. Thus, Úankara's view engenders transcendental illusion. The final chapter addresses Schelling's idealism and in particular the view of the potencies at work in God, before God was God. Due to creation, an inversion of the potencies occurs and the outer gains control over the inner. Next, elements of Habermas' view are discussed, wherein he holds a materialistic-interactive-idealist position, as indicated in his ideal speech situation. At this time, it will be argued that Habermas' "ideal speech situation" is idealistic like Schelling's position. Consequently, both Schelling and Habermas' reaction respectively make the Primordial Will and the Ideal Speech Situation into an Ideal and in so doing commits a transcendental illusion.

Abstract:
Software developers often confront questions such as "Why was the code implemented this way"? To answer such questions, developers make use of information in a software system's bug and source repositories. In this thesis, we consider two user interfaces for helping a developer to explore information from such repositories. One user interface, from Holmes and Begel's Deep Intellisense tool, exposes historical information across several integrated views, favouring exploration from a single code element to all of that element's historical information. The second user interface, in a tool called Rationalizer that we introduce in this thesis, integrates historical information into the source code editor, favouring exploration from a particular code line to its immediate history. We introduce a model to express how software repository information is connected and use this model to compare the two interfaces. Through a laboratory study, we found that our model can help to predict which interface is helpful for two particular kinds of historical questions. We also found deficiencies in the interfaces that hindered users in the exploration of historical information. These results can help inform tool developers who are presenting historical information from software repositories, whether that information is retrieved directly from the repository or derived through software history mining.

Abstract:
This thesis addresses information theoretic methods for control of one or several active cameras in the context of visual surveillance. This approach has two advantages. Firstly, any system dealing with real inputs must take into account noise in the measurements and the underlying system model. Secondly, the control of cameras in surveillance often has different, potentially conflicting objectives. Information theoretic metrics not only yield a way to assess the uncertainty in the current state estimate, they also provide means to choose the observation parameters that optimally reduce this uncertainty. The latter property allows comparison of sensing actions with respect to different objectives. This allows specification of a preference for objectives, where the generated control will fulfil these desired objectives accordingly. The thesis provides arguments for the utility of information theoretic approaches to control visual surveillance systems, by addressing the following objectives in particular: Firstly, how to choose a zoom setting of a single camera to optimally track a single target with a Kalman filter. Here emphasis is put on an arbitration between loss of track due to noise in the observation process, and information gain due to higher accuracy after successful observation. The resulting method adds a running average of the Kalman filter’s innovation to the observation noise, which not only ameliorates tracking performance in the case of unexpected target motions, but also provides a higher maximum zoom setting. The second major contribution of this thesis is a term that addresses exploration of the supervised area in an information theoretic manner. The reasoning behind this term is to model the appearance of new targets in the supervised environment, and use this as prior uncertainty about the occupancy of areas currently not under observation. Furthermore, this term uses the performance of an object detection method to gauge the information that observations of a single location can yield. Additionally, this thesis shows experimentally that a preference for control objectives can be set using a single scalar value. This linearly combines the objective functions of the two conflicting objectives of detection and exploration, and results in the desired control behaviour. The third contribution is an objective function that addresses classification methods. The thesis shows in detail how the information can be derived that can be gained from the classification of a single target, under consideration of its gaze direction. Quantitative and qualitative validation show the increase in performance when compared to standard methods.

Abstract:
This dissertation explores new frontiers of creativity. Currently, the concept of creativity is limited, restricting us to a narrow view of the phenomenon. To remedy this, I investigate new cases of behaviour, entities and systems. To do so, I construct a definition of creativity that can be applies outside the domain of human activity, and examine a broad array of examples that are entirely new to studies of creativity. In doing so, limitations owing to our ability to recognize creativity are made apparent. I argue that a new way of approaching creativity is required to overcome these limitations, and propose a diachronic definition of creativity based on a general systems law. Using the diachronic definition of creative behaviour. I discover a number of creative systems at different organizational scales, including prion adaptation and biogenesis. I argue that these newfound examples of creativity and the definition that exploses them, have significant implications for how we understand creativity.

Evans, Richard Neil. "Philosophical exploration of transsexuality." Thesis, University of Birmingham, 2009. http://etheses.bham.ac.uk//id/eprint/335/.

Full text
Abstract:
This thesis has two aims: First, to demonstrate that there is in the current medical model of transsexuality conceptual incoherence. Second, to establish an alternative model for understanding transsexuality: the model of authenticity. The current medical model is based on an assumption that the sexed body and gender identity are distinct, so that gender is different to sex, which forms the basis of transsexuality. The tension in transsexuality between sex and gender gives rise to suffering. Surgery unifies sex and gender and is offered as the humane response. It is this move from separation to unification of sex and gender that constitutes the conceptual incoherence in the current medical model. Suffering is then explored as a potential justification for surgery. It is argued that it is not obvious that suffering must be alleviated. Indeed, suffering may be valuable, and where this is the case there is no moral imperative to remove it. So, whilst there is a serious moral duty to respond to suffering there is no absolute duty to alleviate it. An alternative model is then explored. A model of authenticity, which can replace the medical model, better enables the freely chosen identity and goals of the transsexual to be respected, without compromising the ends of medicine.

Abstract:
Model transformation has proven to be an effective technique to produce target models from source models. Most transformation approaches focus on generating a single target model from a given source model. However there are situations where a collection of possible target models is preferred over a single one. Such situations arise when some choices cannot be encoded in the transformation. Then, search techniques can be used to help select a target model having specific properties. In this thesis, we present an approach combining model transformation with constraint solving to generate and explore these model sets. Moreover, we present two implementations of this approach along with multiple case studies showcasing these implementations and there usefulness

Abstract:
Deploying robots in unknown and complex areas for inspection tasks is becoming a real need for various application scenarios. Recently, there has been an increasing interest to develop and use autonomous aerial robots in environments such as urban voids and subterranean mine tunnels, aiming to decrease the human presence in dangerous or inaccessible areas. These areas are characterized by complete darkness and narrow tunnels, where the ground can often be rough and not traversible for mobile vehicles, thus the developments focus on Micro Aerial Vehicles (MAVs). MAVs are mechanically simple and agile platforms that can navigate through cluttered areas and have the potential to perform complex exploration tasks when equipped with proper onboard sensors. One of the key milestones in the development of autonomous robots is self-exploration. The definition of self-exploration according to [7] is "the act of moving through an unknown environment while building a map that can be used for subsequent navigation". By reaching this milestone, robots would be freed from the limitation of requiring already existing maps for navigation. In this thesis, a frontier-based exploration algorithm is established and evaluated to understand how such method could be used to reach the self-exploration milestone. By marking the border between what is known and unknown the method is able to determine the next desired position for the robot to expand the map. The resulting algorithm, together with a path planning method and 3-dimensional mapping framework, the method was tested and examined in simulated environments with different levels of complexity.

Le, An T. D. "An exploration of trypophobia." Thesis, University of Essex, 2015. http://repository.essex.ac.uk/16352/.

Full text
Abstract:
Images comprising clusters of objects can induce aversion and certain symptoms of anxiety, fear and disgust (so-called “trypophobia”) in about 13% of the population. This thesis is an investigation of the stimulus and response characteristics of the condition. First, a symptom questionnaire (Trypophobia Questionnaire) was developed and validated based on reports of different categories of symptoms. The questionnaire demonstrated a single construct that predicted discomfort from trypophobic images, but not neutral or unpleasant images, and did not correlate with anxiety. Second, filtering images reduced the excess energy at mid-range spatial frequencies (previously associated with both trypophobic and uncomfortable images). Relative to unfiltered trypophobic images, the discomfort from filtered images experienced by observers with high TQ scores was less than that experienced with neutral images, and by observers with low TQ scores. Clusters of concave objects (holes) did not induce significantly more discomfort than clusters of convex objects (bumps), suggesting that trypophobia (previously referred to as “fear of holes”) involves clusters not of holes but of objects with particular spectral profile involving excess energy at mid-range spatial frequencies. These visual characteristics have been previously shown to induce discomfort and a strong cortical oxygenation. The same abnormal oxygenation occurred for trypophobic images, but only for individuals with high TQ scores. Three lines of evidence suggest that trypophobia is a response of disgust rather than fear: (1) trypophobia was associated with an aversion to spiders, and not snakes; (2) trypophobic stimuli did not produce a bias in the subjective estimation of stimulus duration but (3) increased the heart rate and its variability. Fear inducing stimuli generally give effects opposite to those listed as 2 and 3. In conclusion, trypophobia is a reaction of disgust to clusters of objects with particular spectral profile that may resemble contamination sources (e.g., skin lesions).

Sykes, Michael P. "Some techniques for the enhancement of electromagnetic data for mineral exploration." Thesis, Curtin University, 2000. http://hdl.handle.net/20.500.11937/922.

Full text
Abstract:
The usefulness of electromagnetic (EM) methods for mineral exploration is severely restricted by the presence of a conductive overburden. Approximately 80% of the Australian continent is covered by regolith that contains some of the most conductive clays on Earth. As a result, frequency-domain methods are only effective for near surface investigations and time-domain methods, that are capable of deeper exploration, require the measurement of very small, late-time signals. Both methods suffer from the fact that the currents in the conductive Earth layers contribute a large portion of the total measured signal that may mask the signal from a conductive target. In the search for non-layered structures, this form of geological noise is the greatest impediment to the success of EM surveys in conductive terrains. Over the years a range of data acquisition and processing techniques have been used in an effort to enhance the response of the non-layered target and thereby increase the likelihood of its detection. The combined use of a variety of survey configurations to assist exploration and interpretation is not new and is practiced regularly. The active nature of EM exploration means that the measured response is determined to a large degree by the way in which the Earth is energised. Geological structures produce different responses to different stimuli. In this work, two new methods of data combination are used to transform the measured data into a residual quantity that enhances the signature of non-layered geological structures. Based on the concept of data redundancy and tested using the results of numerical modelling, the new combinations greatly increase the signal to noise ratio for targets located in a conductive environment by reducing the layered Earth contribution. The data combinations have application to frequency-domain and time-domain EM surveys and simple interpretive rules can be applied to the residuals to extract geological parameters useful in exploration. The new methods make use of inductive loop sources and can therefore also be applied to airborne surveys.Airborne surveys present special difficulties due to the data acquisition procedures commonly used. Flight-line related artefacts such as herringbones detract from the appearance of maps and make boundary definition more difficult. A new procedure, based on the Radon transform, is used to remove herringbones from airborne EM maps and locate the conductive boundaries correctly, making interpretation more reliable and easier. In addition, selective filtering of the Radon transform data enables the enhancement or attenuation of specific linear features shown in the map to emphasise features of interest. Comparison of the Radon transform procedures with the more conventional Fourier transform methods shaves the Radon transform processing to be more versatile and less prone to distortion of the features in a map.The procedures developed in this work are applied to field data with good results.

Abstract:
The vast amount of data that Web mining techniques generate from Web spaces is difficult to understand, suggesting the need to develop new techniques to gather insight into them in order to assist in decision making processes. This dissertation explores the usage of InfoVis/VA techniques to assist in the exploration of Web spaces. More specifically, we present the development of a customisable prototype that has been used to analyse three different types of Web spaces with different information goals: the analysis of the usability of a website, the assessment of the students in virtual learning environments, and the exploration of the structure of large asynchronous conversations existing in online forums. Echoing the call of the Infovis/VA community for the need for more research into realistic circumstances, we introduce the problems of the analysis of such Web spaces, and further explore the benefits of using the visualisations provided by our system with real users.

Abstract:
This thesis provides strategies for multiple vehicles to explore unknown environments in a cooperative and systematic manner. These strategies are called Simultaneous Cooperative Exploration and Networking (SCENT) strategies. As the basis for development of SCENT strategies, we first tackle the motion control and planning for one vehicle with range sensors. In particular, we develop the curve-tracking controllers for autonomous vehicles with rigidly mounted range sensors, and a provably complete exploration strategy is proposed so that one vehicle with range sensors builds a topological map of an environment. The SCENT algorithms introduced in this thesis extend the exploration strategy for one vehicle to multiple vehicles. The enabling idea of the SCENT algorithms is to construct a topological map of the environment, which is considered completely explored if the map corresponds to a complete Voronoi diagram of the environment. To achieve this, each vehicle explores its local area by incrementally expanding the already visited areas of the environment. At the same time, every vehicle deploys communication devices at selected locations and, as a result, a communication network is created concurrently with a topological map. This additional network allows the vehicles to share information in a distributed manner resulting in an efficient exploration of the workspace. The efficiency of the proposed SCENT algorithms is verified through theoretical investigations as well as experiments using mobile robots. Moreover, the resulting networks and the topological maps are used to solve coordinated multi-robot tasks, such as capturing intruders.

Abstract:
The goal of this dissertation is to document striking new job stability patterns in Canada and explore their causes. The first paper (Chapter 2) shows how to correctly apply the retention rate approach to cross sectional data. I propose two cross sectional estimators and clearly identify the conditions required for consistency. I demonstrate the bias of existing approaches for calculating standard errors, and propose an alternative method. Finally, using Current Population Survey data I show that existing approaches to estimating standard errors may lead the researcher to falsely reject the null hypothesis of no change in job stability. The second paper (Chapter 3) documents the changing job stability patterns in Canada over the 1977-2004 period. I use a retention rate approach which is less sensitive to job inflows than in-progress measures, but for which the data requirements are severe. In North America, only the Canadian Labour Force Survey satisfies these stringent data requirements. Using this rich source of data and tools developed in Chapter 2, I find that overall job stability has actually increased in Canada since the early 1990s. Two other key findings include an increase in the relative stability of women and a large increase in stability for jobs with initial tenure of less than one year. The third paper (Chapter 4) explores the causes of the new job stability patterns that were documented in Chapter 3. Results indicate that the ageing of the workforce, increased educational attainment and increased labour force attachment of women play an important role in the aggregate patterns. However, only rising educational attainment matters for newer jobs—with a large part of the increase still unexplained. I use a match quality framework to explore for changes in job stability along tenure lines. The model predicts that stricter eligibility requirements introduced in the early 1990s for the Employment Insurance program should result in better match formation, and as such, lead to an increase in stability of newer jobs. The empirical findings of this thesis are consistent with such predictions.

Abstract:
In most games today the movements of computer players is controlled by a web of waypoints that have been predefined by the creators of the map, or automatically generated by an application on beforehand. This data is precompiled to save precious CPU cycles for the player of the game, but what if we want these computer players to be able to explore how to get around the map by themselves? How could this be done and how would the result change if we had several of these players cooperating to explore the map? We explore some of the possibilities for exploration and discovery of maps using approaches that is often found in robotics. We also look at what happens when there is a penalty for communicating between these computer players, and what effect different amounts of map coverage will have on the performance of them. By setting up a test environment inside an existing commercial computer game we developed a client side bot system that made it possible for us to test different parameters and settings. Based on the analysis of the test results we propose ways to describe and predict the effects of the number of bots and the communication rate, and we describe several ways of how to further advance on these ideas and experiments.

Berry, Mike A. "An exploration of asthma phenotypes." Thesis, University of Leicester, 2006. http://hdl.handle.net/2381/29513.

Full text
Abstract:
In this thesis the long term stability of eosinophilic bronchitis has been investigated in a longitudinal study. Induced sputum has been used to investigate a possible difference in expression of IL-13 in asthma and eosinophilic bronchitis. Bronchoscopy has been used to compare the airway immunopathology of eosinophilic and non eosinophilic asthma and the long term stability and response to inhaled corticosteroids in non eosinophilic asthma was studied in a prospective randomised controlled trial. Alveolar nitric oxide concentration has been validated as a measure of distal lung inflammation. Finally the role of TNF-alpha and response to etanercept has been investigated in patients with refractory asthma. Evolution from eosinophilic bronchitis into asthma was rare, decline in lung function was not increased, although female gender, smoking and prolonged eosinophilic airway inflammation were independent risk factors for an accelerated decline. IL-13 concentrations were elevated in asthma compared to eosinophilic bronchitis, suggesting a role for this cytokine in the development of airway hyperresponsiveness. Non eosinophilic asthma remained stable over the period of investigation and was associated with reduced response to inhaled corticosteroids. Mast cells were present in airway smooth muscle in eosinophilic and non eosinophilic asthma but not normal controls. Subepithelial layer thickening was a feature of eosinophilic but not non eosinophilic asthma. Alveolar nitric oxide was increased in refractory asthma and reduced by oral but not inhaled corticosteroids.

Abstract:
This thesis is founded in the positive psychological theory of gratitude, the experience of thankfulness and its benefits on both the individual and the community. My explorations via personal journaling, careful reflection, and engaging in craft, led me to cultivate a new definition for gratitude: present moment awareness. Using sheer fabric and the meditative act of embroidering, the language of gratitude was relearned and cultivated. My piece aims to incite further explorations in thanks.

Sherwood, Kaitlin Duck. "Path exploration during code navigation." Thesis, University of British Columbia, 2008. http://hdl.handle.net/2429/5407.

Full text
Abstract:
Previous research in computer science shows that developers spend a large fraction of their time navigating through source code. Improving developers’ effectiveness in navigating code thus should yield significant productivity improvements. Pre vious research in a number of fields suggests that a more breadth-first approach to problem solving should be more successful than a more depth-first approach. Unfortunately, modern Integrated Development Environments (IDEs) do not sup port a breadth-first search well because they do not help developers keep track of exploration paths well. We implemented an IDE that allows developers to track different exploration paths more easily, and ran a user study with seven subjects. To our surprise, sub jects used the tool to mark waypoints instead of to facilitate a more breadth-first search. Intrigued, we examined more closely techniques for finding a starting point and for tracing relationships from there. We describe our findings, including com mon difficulties our subjects encountered, and propose a novel tool to reduce in correct search paths.
