Abstract:
The 16th and 17th centuries in Europe witnessed a significant paradigm shift. Rooted in medieval beliefs and preoccupations, the exploration so characteristic of the period stemmed from religious motives but came to be propelled by commerce and curiosity as Europeans increasingly engaged with the rest of the world. Interiors in both public and private spaces changed to reflect these cultural encounters and, with them, the furniture with which they were populated. Visually, furniture of this period displayed new designs, forms and materials. In its uses, it also mirrored developments in science, technology, government and social relationships as prints became more widely distributed, the Wunderkammer developed and there was religious strife and resistance to absolute monarchical rule. Drawing upon a wealth of visual and textual sources, this volume presents essays that examine key characteristics of the furniture of the period on the themes of Design and Motifs; Makers, Making, and Materials; Types and Uses; The Domestic Setting; The Public Setting; Exhibition and Display; Furniture and Architecture; Visual Representations; and Verbal Representations.

Abstract:
Chapter2 provides a background for the main motifs of the study. It commences with a survey of the development of the figure of Satan and Satanism, and then discusses Genesis 3, the narrative that lies at the root of most of the later ideas about Satan’s intimate ties to woman. The interpretations of this text by Gnostics, Church Fathers, and reformers are delineated. This is followed by an examination of the notion of the Devil as a woman, whereafter the enigmatic entity Baphomet—an example of how Satan has been given female or hermaphroditic traits in esoteric writings—is considered. Thereupon, some background is provided on the Jewish demoness Lilith, who was seen as the first feminist in several nineteenth-century interpretations. Next, some motifs in folklore and witchcraft trials are treated, followed by a brief exploration of ideas concerning erotic relations between women and Satan.

Abstract:
The path of healing, self-discovery, and tackling the existential questions as to why people use drugs is addressed in this chapter. The chapter outlines the healing concepts within the Quero tradition, as these peoples were direct descendants of the Inca from ancient Andean Peru. The cosmology and oral traditions through healing motifs are timeless irrespective of cultural and chronological differences. The case examples serve as an ideal platform to launch this chapter on healing and the shamanic path in addiction treatment. Exploration of time, space, relativity, quantum physics—and their interconnectivity to the healing path—are explored. As a valuable addition to the classic approach to addiction and recovery, this chapter conforms to the whole person spiritual approaches available through medical anthropology cultural exploration: in this case, the Inca descendants, the Quero and their wisdom healing traditions.
