Abstract:
ABSTRACT The beauty of batik as one form of visual culture in Indonesia is one of the priceless inheritance which has a philosophical symbolic meaning that regulates the social relationship between human and the human relationships with the God. The history of batik never revealed when batik began to exist and who created it. Batik in Indonesia has been known since the era of the Majapahit Kingdom and continues to grow until the emergence of the next kingdoms. Exploration of visual culture in Indonesia becomes a challenge in its learning and its realization. The reason is that every culture has its own social norm / custom that is very strong and influences the people's lives. The diverse application of batik motifs on various products greatly influences the strength of the existence of batik as one form of art in Indonesia which, of course, can also move the economic side of the creation of creativity that always emerges and develops in society. This artistic research of batik motifs richness that is applied into a wood carving motif is proposed to support the development of batik. This research uses a method of motifs exploration by bringing up traditional batik motifs that are packaged in a semi relief wood carving by applying a new motif patterned in accordance to the wood carving techniques. This method conveys traditional batik motifs with a three-dimensional style and in different size in order to bring up the three-dimensional style. Keywords: Exploration, Batik Motifs, Wood Carving. Abstract:
Textile dyeing in this modern era, many industries use synthetic materials which will have a negative impact on the environment. To overcome this, start making textile coloring using environmentally friendly substances or even with natural dyes. One example is ecoprint. Ecoprint is widely known as a textile dyeing method using plants as a substitute for synthetic dyes. The resulting motifs are leaves, flowers, or other plant parts that can produce color. Exploration of motifs can still be developed again by processing leaves into other motifs. This design aims to create a new innovation in presenting the novelty of ecoprint motifs by processing leaves to form new motifs. This new motif will later add to the appeal of ecoprint products. The formation of this ecoprint motif can be done by taking a form that can be applied in the ecoprint technique. The shape should not be arbitrary because it can affect how the ecoprint results will be. The process of making this ecoprint needs to go through several stages that have been explained by S.P Gustami's theory, namely: exploration, design and embodiment which will lead to the design of products that have new ideas and developments from previous designs.

Abstract:
Opa is an emblematic Yoruba sculptural verge and preserved transcendence expressional art amongst the social group in order to describe hierarchical structure in ranking chiefs, religious cults’ priests/priestesses and aged right. Significantly, time-scale conscious and in-depth exploration of the hierarchical motifs on diverse verges and artistic formats of integrated motifs have not been considered using deco-hierarchical structures analysis. The visual artistic expression of verges sculptural forms demands contextual exploration to give meaningful time-scale oriented written reports that could clear up vague impressions towards different structures. For this conspicuous fact, a study of Yoruba sculpturesque verges will crystallize metonymical written explanations of motifs that suggest the power structure of the life of the Yoruba. The paper, therefore, examines the class-conscious format of images, motifs, and symbols unified on diverse emblematic verges for exploration of distinctive features of chieftains’ status, stylistic expression and interpretation of cults’ art in the Yoruba culture. Analytical review and critical appraisal methodologies were utilized for diverse verges; pictures were collated for critical examination of stratified motifs and symbols with the objectives of contextual and conceptual analyses. Findings unveiled artists’ expression towards this symbol of superiority which exists within the hierarchical structure of chieftaincy and religious cults’ orientations of Yoruba gods. However, it is apparent from studied verges that fastidiously effort given to the balance of patterns, motifs, and forms through professionalism and prowess suggest Yoruba ways of life.

Abstract:
The rapidity of moral degeneracy and bankruptcy in Nigeria and elsewhere is only symptomatic of the apparent fact that African cultures have been under serious threat, through the invectives of alien cultures through globalization. Efforts must therefore be made at arresting the drifting cultural values through the conservation and preservation of traditional cultural properties, such as traditional motifs and their cultural meanings. However, there have been scanty in-depth research to establish a possible nexus between textile design and preservation of motifs of cultural artefacts. This study examined the exploration of the utility of textile design as a veritable instrument in achieving the clarion call by Traditional Cultural Properties (TCP). In this study the Igbo oji isi ato and ududo motifs and their cultural significance were highlighted. The practice led research approach was adopted. The results showed that the batik textile design could be adopted in the preservation of traditional cultural properties in Nigeria. The oji isi ato and ududo batiks were specifically explored and found to be a veritable mechanism that could be leveraged upon in the preservation of symbols and motifs of traditional cultural properties. It is therefore recommended that scholars should explore more areas to achieve the conservation and preservation of motifs of cultural artefacts and traditional cultural properties to arrest the drift in moral values among the youth.

The abundance of patterns generated by knowledge extraction algorithms is a major problem in data mining. Ta facilitate the exploration of these patterns, two approaches are often used: the first is to summarize the sets of extracted patterns and the second approach relies on the construction of visual representations of the patterns. However, the summaries are not structured and they are proposed without exploration method. Furthermore, visualizations do not provide an overview of the pattern .sets. We define a generic framework that combines the advantages of bath approaches. It allows building summaries of patterns sets at different levels of detail. These summaries provide an overview of the pattern sets and they are structured in the form of cubes on which OLAP navigational operators can be applied in order to explore the pattern sets. Moreover, we propose an algorithm which provides a summary of good quality whose size is below a given threshold. Finally, we instantiate our framework with association rules

Bahauddin, Azizi Bin. "Contemporary Malaysian art : an exploration of the Songket motifs." Thesis, Sheffield Hallam University, 1999. http://ethos.bl.uk/OrderDetails.do?uin=uk.bl.ethos.287587.

Abstract:
This thesis explores the Malay songket motifs in relation to Malaysia's cultural identity and the transformations of these motifs within the context of the researcher's own art works. An examination of Malaysian government's fixed National Culture policy on identity is contrasted with the reality of identity as dynamic. The identity policy was created and asserted on a multi-racial population based on concept of MalaylBumiputera with no recognition of the 'Other', the nonBumiputera culture. Divisions among the populace were created by the privileges of political, economic and social adjustments given only to the Bumiputera. The lack of addressing the concerns of recognition and acknowledgement of the 'Other' and existence of 'difference' and stereotyping becomes the main interest of this research. In this thesis, the Malay songket motifs were used as a vehicle to demonstrate the Malay's strong association with traditional customs and rituals, a culture that became the focus of the National Culture policy. The motifs symbolises the dominance of the Malays clinging on to power to control the nation, echOing the height of the Malacca Malay Sultanate Empire eight centuries ago. The sense of growth, unity and human spirituality associated with animism was expressed in the songket motifs. However, evidence of the motifs assimilation with Hindu-Buddhist and Islamic influences proved that there is no Malay 'purity' in this art form. The researcher's practice transforms the flat images of the songket motifs into installative art works. Foods, light, shadow, images and sound become the media which express the research findings drawn from documentary, visual and oral sources concerning the songket motifs. His practice differs from the normal practice of Malaysian artists, who literally translate Malay culture into art work. The researcher's practice employs specific references to Malaysian sources free from didactic, cultural-political content. Above all, as a Malaysian working in the UK, the researcher not only engages his theoretical findings to inform his practice, he becomes part of the research. He is both a Malaysian artist himself and a contributor to that part of Malay culture that is examined in this thesis. He contributes to the compilation of the songket motifs information into CD-ROM.

Abstract:
This work addresses the problem of mining patterns under constraints in event sequences. Extracted patterns are episode rules. Our main contribution is an automatic search for optimal time window of each one of the episode rules. We propose to extract only rules having such an optimal time window. These rules are termed FLM-rules. We present an algorithm, WinMiner, that aims to extract FLM-rules, given a minimum support threshold, a minimum confidence threshold and a maximum gap constraint. Proofs of the correctness of this algorithm are supplied. We also propose a dedicated interest measure that aims to select FLM-rules such that their heads and bodies can be considered as dependant. Two applications are described. The first one is about mining medical datasets while the other one deals with seismic datasets

Abstract:
The study of an operational process often runs up against the analysis of heterogeneous and large data. While the environment associated with this process evolves constantly, one inevitably notices the appearance of differences between what was expected and what is really observed. By using the collected data and available expertise, it is then necessary to detect these differences, and thus to update the model being used. Accordingly, we propose a knowledge discovery process that integrates the definition and the exploitation of a bayesian network to facilitate the analysis of a concise set of association rules. The evolution of this model is controlled by the discovery of relevant rules, themselves made more accessible by the exploitation from the properties of this model. Finally, we show a practical application of our proposals to the field of operational interruptions in the aircraft industry

Abstract:

Abstract:
This PhD Thesis concerns the particular data mining field that is the sequential pattern extractions from event sequence databases (e. G. Customer transaction sequences, web logs, DNA). Among existing algorithms, those based on the use of a representation in memory of the pattern locations (called occurrence lists), present a lost of efficiency when the sequences contain consecutive repetitions. This PhD Thesis proposes some efficient solutions to the sequential pattern extraction in such a context (constraints and repetitions) based on a condensation of informations contained in the occurrence lists, without lost for the extraction process. This new representation leads to new sequential pattern extraction algorithms (GoSpade and GoSpec) particularly well adapted to the presence of consecutive repetitions in the datasets. These algorithms have been proved to be sound and complete and experiments on both real and synthetic datasets enabled to show that the gain in term of memory space and execution time is important and that they increase with the number of consecutive repetitions contained in the datasets. Finally, a financial application has been performed in order to make a condensed representation of market trends by means of frequent sequential patterns

Abstract:
Until recently, data mining and Constraint Programming have been developed separately one from the other. This thesis is one of the first to address the relationships between these two areas of computer science, in particular using constraint programming techniques for constraint-based mining. The data mining community has proposed generic approaches to discover local patterns under constraints, and this issue is rather well-mastered. However, these approaches do not take into consideration that the interest of a pattern often depends on the other patterns. Such a pattern is called n-ary pattern or pattern set. Few works on mining n-ary patterns were conducted and the proposed approaches are ad hoc. This thesis proposes an unified framework for modeling and solving n-ary constraints in data mining. First, the n-ary pattern extraction problem is modeled as a Constraint Satisfaction Problem (CSP). Then, a high-level declarative language for mining n-ary patterns is proposed. This language allows to express a wide range of n-ary constraints. Several solving methods are developed and compared. The main advantages of this framework are its declarative and generic sides. To the best of our knowledge, it is the first generic and flexible framework for modeling and mining n-ary patterns

Abstract:
AbstractMedia influence how we define and engage with our world, shaping our interpretations, attitudes, behaviours. Feature films in which work-related injuries, deaths, and disasters are the storylines can convey occupational safety messages to large, diverse audiences. Films can entertain, act as “powerful” and “poignant” memorials to workers, heighten peoples’ awareness of events, and even deepen their understanding of the causes of workplace disasters. However, it is unclear how films actually represent the complexities of workplace injury and industrial disaster. We examined the film Only the Brave (di Bonaventura, Luckinbill (Producers), Kosinski (Director) in Only the Brave [Motion Picture] (Columbia Pictures, United States, 2017)), which recounts the story of the deaths of 19 wildland firefighters in America. In particular, we examine how the film portrays workplace disaster and the factors which led up to the event. We discuss some strengths and limitations of feature films as a form of visualizing workplace disaster.

Abstract:
Batik Giriloyo is the oldest written batik center in Yogyakarta. The Batik Giriloyo tradition has a strong emotional connection with the Kraton Yogyakarta tradition due to the development of the courtiers who guarded the tombs of the kings in Imogiri. This historical background makes the Batik Giriloyo motifs have a strong market in a storytelling marketing platform. So far, sales of Batik Giriloyo have relied on direct sales. However, the Covid-19 outbreak caused sales to decline. Changes in consumer behavior will have a permanent impact on sales not anticipated. Changes in consumer social behavior will change their shopping behavior. Reduced contact (less contact) will be a threat. For information technology to be the preferred way of selling, several studies have stated that technology will be useful in supporting the sustainability of people's lives. On the other hand, technology is less able to persuade. This research tries to make a promotional model based on storytelling by utilizing technology 4.0 as a marketing medium. The method used is the exploratory method. Exploration is used to find potential stories in Batik Giriloyo. The results show that the Batik Giriloyo motif has various background stories that are very philosophical. Starting from the philosophy of Javanese Culture, Environmental Philosophy, and history.

Abstract:
Abstract Control of under-actuated bipedal walking robots has been an active area of research for many decades. Hybrid zero dynamics based motion planning is a technique very commonly used to plan trajectories for these robots. Exploring the solution space of optimal trajectories obtained through this method can potentially increase our understanding of bipedal walking by observing possible speeds, energy consumption etc. Very few studies are available with detailed solution space explorations of walking trajectories obtained through this method. This paper attempts to fill this gap by performing a hybrid zero dynamics based solution space exploration for an under-actuated two-link biped with a point mass at the hip as a proxy for the torso. The parameters of the biped chosen are similar to that of an average human. In addition, a comparison of the solutions obtained for different objective functions is carried out. Lastly, a non-dimensional analysis is done to identify if there are any dominant terms in the dynamics of the walking trajectories.

Wehr, Tobias, ed. EarthCARE Mission Requirements Document. European Space Agency, November 2006. http://dx.doi.org/10.5270/esa.earthcare-mrd.2006.

Full text
Abstract:
ESA's EarthCARE (Cloud, Aerosol and Radiation Explorer) mission - scheduled to be launched in 2024 - is the largest and most complex Earth Explorer to date and will advance our understanding of the role that clouds and aerosols play in reflecting incident solar radiation back into space and trapping infrared radiation emitted from Earth's surface. The mission is being implemented in cooperation with JAXA (Japan Aerospace Exploration Agency). It carries four scientific instruments. The Atmospheric Lidar (ATLID), operating at 355 nm wavelength and equipped with a high-spectral resolution and depolarisation receiver, measures profiles of aerosols and thin clouds. The Cloud Profiling Radar (CPR, contribution of JAXA), operates at 94 GHz to measure clouds and precipitation, as well as vertical motion through its Doppler functionality. The Multi-Spectral Imager provides across-track information of clouds and aerosols. The Broad-Band Radiometer (BBR) measures the outgoing reflected solar and emitted thermal radiation in order to derive broad-band radiative fluxes at the top of atmosphere. The Mission Requirement Document defines the scientific mission objectives and observational requirements of EarthCARE. The document has been written by the ESA-JAXA Joint Mission Advisory Group for EarthCARE.

Carty, Anthony, and Jing Gu. Theory and Practice in China’s Approaches to Multilateralism and Critical Reflections on the Western ‘Rules-Based International Order’. Institute of Development Studies (IDS), October 2021. http://dx.doi.org/10.19088/ids.2021.057.

Full text
Abstract:
China is the subject of Western criticism for its supposed disregard of the rules-based international order. Such a charge implies that China is unilateralist. The aim in this study is to explain how China does in fact have a multilateral approach to international relations. China’s core idea of a community of shared future of humanity shows that it is aware of the need for a universal foundation for world order. The Research Report focuses on explaining the Chinese approach to multilateralism from its own internal perspective, with Chinese philosophy and history shaping its view of the nature of rules, rights, law, and of institutions which should shape relationships. A number of case studies show how the Chinese perspectives are implemented, such as with regards to development finance, infrastructure projects (especially the Belt and Road Initiative), shaping new international organisations (such as the Asian Infrastructure Investment Bank), climate change, cyber-regulation and Chinese participation in the United Nations in the field of human rights and peacekeeping. Looking at critical Western opinion of this activity, we find speculation around Chinese motives. This is why a major emphasis is placed on a hermeneutic approach to China which explains how it sees its intentions. The heart of the Research Report is an exploration of the underlying Chinese philosophy of rulemaking, undertaken in a comparative perspective to show how far it resembles or differs from the Western philosophy of rulemaking.
