Baise, Paul. "Cogitator : a parallel, fuzzy, database-driven expert system." Thesis, Rhodes University, 1994. http://hdl.handle.net/10962/d1006684.

Full text
Abstract:
The quest to build anthropomorphic machines has led researchers to focus on knowledge and the manipulation thereof. Recently, the expert system was proposed as a solution, working well in small, well understood domains. However these initial attempts highlighted the tedious process associated with building systems to display intelligence, the most notable being the Knowledge Acquisition Bottleneck. Attempts to circumvent this problem have led researchers to propose the use of machine learning databases as a source of knowledge. Attempts to utilise databases as sources of knowledge has led to the development Database-Driven Expert Systems. Furthermore, it has been ascertained that a requisite for intelligent systems is powerful computation. In response to these problems and proposals, a new type of database-driven expert system, Cogitator is proposed. It is shown to circumvent the Knowledge Acquisition Bottleneck and posess many other advantages over both traditional expert systems and connectionist systems, whilst having non-serious disadvantages.

CHOOBINEH, JOOBIN. "FORM DRIVEN CONCEPTUAL DATA MODELING (DATABASE DESIGN, EXPERT SYSTEMS, CONCEPTUAL)." Diss., The University of Arizona, 1985. http://hdl.handle.net/10150/188043.

Abstract:
Conceptual data schema is constructed from the analysis of the business forms which are used in an enterprise. In order to peform the analysis a data model, a forms model, and heuristics to map from the forms model to the data model are developed. The data model we use is an extended version of the Entity-Relationship Model. Extensions include the addition of the min-max cardinalities and generalization hierarchy. By extending the min-max cardinalities to attributes we capture a number of significant characteristics of the entities in a concise manner. We introduce a hierarchical model of forms. The model specifies various properties of each form field within the form such as their origin, hierarchical structure, and cardinalities. The inter-connection of the forms is expressed by specifying which form fields flow from one form to another. The Expert Database Design System creates a conceptual schema by incrementally integrating related collections of forms. The rules of the expert system are divided into six groups: (1) Form Selection, (2) Entity Identification, (3) Attribute Attachment, (4) Relationship Identification, (5) Cardinality Identification, and (6) Integrity Constraints. The rules of the first group use knowledge about the form flow to determine the order in which forms are analyzed. The rules in other groups are used in conjunction with a designer dialogue to identify entities, relationships, and attributes of a schema that represents the collection of forms.

Abstract:
The cutting tool industry has evolved over the last half century to the point where an increasing range and complexity of cutting tools are available for metal machining. This highlighted a need to provide an intelligent, user-friendly system of tool selection and recommendation that can also provide predictive economic performance data for engineers and end-users alike. Such an 'expert system' was developed for a local manufacturer of cutting tools in the form of a relational database to be accessed over the Internet. A number of performance predictive models were reviewed for various machining processes, however they did not encompass the wide range of variables encountered in metal machining, thus adaptation of these existing models for an expert system was reasoned to be economically prohibitive at this time. Interrogation of published expert systems from cutting tool manufacturers, showed the knowledge-engineered principle to be a common approach to transferring economic and technological information to an end-user. The key advantage being the flexibility to allow further improvements as new knowledge is gained. As such, a relational database was built upon the knowledge-engineered principle, based on skilled craft oriented knowledge to establish an expert system for selection and performance assessment of cutting tools. An investigation into tapping of austenitic stainless steels was undertaken to develop part of a larger expert system. The expert system was then interrogated in this specific area in order to challenge by experiment, the skilled craft oriented knowledge in this area. The experimental results were incorporated into the database where appropriate, providing a user-friendly working expert system for intelligent cutting tool selection, recommendation and performance data.

Martin, John Charles. "The development of a knowledge-based system for the preliminary investigation of contaminated land." Thesis, Durham University, 2001. http://etheses.dur.ac.uk/1234/.

Full text
Abstract:
Large areas of the UK have witnessed intense industrialisation since the industrial revolution in the latter part of the 18th Century. Increased environmental awareness and pressure to redevelop brown field sites, have resulted in the majority of civil engineering projects undertaken within the UK encountering some form of contamination. In order to collect the vast amount of information required to assess a potentially contaminated site, a multi-stage site investigation (preliminary investigation, exploratory and detailed investigation) is usually undertaken. The information collected during the investigation allows the three components of the risk assessment process to be identified. These components are the source of contamination, possible pathways for the movement of contaminants and vulnerable targets on and off site. A prototype knowledge-based system (ATTIC Assessment Tool for The Investigation of Contaminated Land) has been developed to demonstrate that knowledge-based technology can be applied to the preliminary stage of the investigation of contaminated land. ATTIC assesses information collected during the preliminary stage of an investigation (past use, geological map, hydrological maps etc.) and assists with the risk assessment process, with the prediction of potential contaminants, hazards and risk to neighbouring areas. The system has been developed, using CLIPS software. It consists of four knowledgebases (source, pathway, target and health and safety knowledge-base), containing 1600 rules. The knowledge within the knowledge-bases was obtained from two main sources. The initial and main source was the technical literature. Obtaining knowledge from technical literature involved reviewing published material, extracting relevant information and converting information into rules suitable for the knowledge-base system. The second source of knowledge was domain experts via a knowledge elicitation exercise. The exercise took the form of a questionnaire relating to the rules and parameters within the system. A Visual Basics interface was also developed in conjunction with the knowledge-based system, in order to allow data entry to the system. The interface uses a series of forms relating to different components within the risk assessment process. On completion of compiling the prototype, the system was validated against a number of case studies. The system predicted the likely contaminants with a reasonable match to those observed, even though the input data for the case studies was limited. The assessment of risks to neighbouring target areas was generally in agreement with the case study reports, matching similar risk values and directions. In addition to the development of the prototype system, a database modelled on the Association of Geotechnical Specialists electronic format for the transfer of ground investigation data was also developed to store preliminary investigation information. The data structures were implemented using Microsoft Access relational database management system software. This allowed the database to be developed within a Microsoft Windows environment.

Campbell, Vivian. "A methodology for the selection of a paradigm of reasoning under uncertainty in expert system development." Thesis, Edith Cowan University, Research Online, Perth, Western Australia, 1998. https://ro.ecu.edu.au/theses/980.

Full text
Abstract:
The aim of this thesis is to develop a methodology for the selection of a paradigm of reasoning under uncertainty for the expert system developer. This is important since practical information on how to select a paradigm of reasoning under uncertainty is not generally available. The thesis explores the role of uncertainty in an expert system and considers the process of reasoning under uncertainty. The possible sources of uncertainty are investigated and prove to be crucial to some aspects of the methodology. A variety of Uncertainty Management Techniques (UMTs) are considered, including numeric, symbolic and hybrid methods. Considerably more information is found in the literature on numeric methods, than the latter two. Methods that have been proposed for comparing UMTs are studied and comparisons reported in the literature are summarised. Again this concentrates on numeric methods, since there is more literature available. The requirements of a methodology for the selection of a UMT are considered. A manual approach to the selection process is developed. The possibility of extending the boundaries of knowledge stored in the expert system by including meta-data to describe the handling of uncertainty in an expert system is then considered. This is followed by suggestions taken from the literature for automating the process of selection. Finally consideration is given to whether the objectives of the research have been met and recommendations are made for the next stage in researching a methodology for the selection of a paradigm of reasoning under uncertainty in expert system development.

Abstract:
The problem reported in this study is but a small part of much larger education problem. The larger problem revolves around a general apathy for continued learning and its counterpart towering competence. Intelligent computer-aided instruction (lCAI) is one alternative method that has been suggested for effectively teaching the masses. The purpose of this study was to develop and test the effects of a four-module instructional system model on the skills development and performance of entry-level, adult, WordPerfect students. This study used a post-test only control and treatment group design, Cronbach's reliability alpha, factor analysis, Pearson’s correlation coefficient, and a t-test for independent samples in the experimental process. It was found after a six-week term that the class (n= 17) composed of heterogeneous, adult, entry-level, students receiving the ICAl treatment scored significantly higher on the experiment's evaluations than the traditional-taught class (n=17) which did not utilize the computerized model. The author concluded that the computerized ICAl model was effective in improving the responsiveness and learning experience of the participating students. It was also concluded that students of entry-level WordPerfect training perceive ICAI as a valuable instructional tool.

Abstract:
In an ever-changing and demanding world where short assembly and innovation times are indispensable, it is of paramount importance to ensure that the machinery used throughout the whole process of a product are in their best possible condition. This guarantees that the performance of each machine will be optimal, and hence, the process times will be the shortest possible, while the best quality products are obtained. Moreover, having a machine in an impeccable status permits making the necessary changes to it, in order to fulfil the requirements that a more advanced or complex product may have. Maintenance operations and their corresponding trainings have historically been time-consuming, and a vast amount of information has been transmitted from an expert to a newer operator. This means that there has been the need of working with experienced operators to secure that a good service is provided. However, different technologies like augmented reality (AR) have been shown to have a positive impact in the support and monitoring of operators in industrial maintenance operations. The present project gathers information in regard to the framework of AR, with the aim of supporting and monitoring operators in industrial environments. The proposed method consists on the development of an artefact, which would lead to a possible improvement of the already existing solutions. It is believed that the development of an AR application could grant the necessary aid to any operator in maintenance operations. The result of this suggestion is an AR application which superimposes visual information on the physical equipment.

Full text
Abstract:
The process of generating user views during logical database design is formalized and expressed as a set of rules which comprise the knowledge base of an expert system. This system, called the View Creation System, engages the user in a dialogue to determine information requirements. These requirements are then translated into a set of Fourth Normal Form relations representing a view. The data model on which the system is based is the Entity-Relationship Model. Using this model, the system elicits entities, attributes and relationships while trying to detect and rectify inconsistencies and ambiguities in the user's input. With the aid of the user, functional dependencies are isolated and resolved before the final set of relations is produced.

Full text
Abstract:
Hazard assessment involves the retrieval of appropriate chemical hazard data and the production of an assessment which complies with relevant regulations. This is a complex process requiring detailed knowledge of chemical hazards and hazard assessment regulations. The purpose of this project is to investigate the use of an expert system approach for hazard assessment of complex systems. The approach has focused on the design, development and evaluation of an expert hazard assessor after appropriate modelling of chemical database retrieval, and legislative knowledge base. An "intelligent form" was designed to link the legislation to the chemical hazard data. To facilitate ease of use, the program was extended to include an on-line help facility, and a user friendly interface to address local and remote databases. The feasibility and benefits of the Expert Hazard Assessor ( EHA ) have been demonstrated through system testing and evaluation using sample regulations, and available chemical data, by groups of inexperienced users. Comparison with a previous standard expert system, also shows the EHA to be more comprehensive in output, more efficient, easier to use for the non-expert assessor, and provides better help support. The results suggest that an EHA such as the one detailed in this work is of significant benefit in providing appropriate hazard assessment.

Abstract:
Usage of very large sets of historical spatial data in knowledge discovery process became a common trend, and in order to obtain better results from this knowledge discovery process the data should be of high quality. In this thesis we proposed a framework 'GeoExpert' for data quality assessment and cleansing tool for spatial data that integrates the spatial data visualization and analysis capabilities of the ARCGIS, the reason and inference capability of an expert system. In this thesis we implemented the proposed framework both stand-alone and web versions using ArcGIS Engine and ArcGIS Server, respectively. We used JESS expert system shell for the expert system part of the GeoExpert. Use of expert system shell separates the application logic from the actual framework which makes the framework easily updatable and domain independent. In this thesis we implemented the GeoExpert on the spatially referenced water quality data.

Shesham, Sriharsha. "Integrating Expert System and Geographic Information System for Spatial Decision Making." TopSCHOLAR®, 2012. http://digitalcommons.wku.edu/theses/1216.

Full text
Abstract:
Spatial decision making is a process of providing an effective solution for a problem that encompasses semi-structured spatial data. It is a challenging task which involves various factors to consider. For example, in order to build a new industry, an appropriate site must be selected for which several factors have to be taken into consideration. Some of the factors, which can affect the decision in this particular case, are air pollution, noise pollution, and distance from living areas, which makes the decision difficult. The geographic information systems (GIS) and the expert systems (ES) have many advantages in solving problems in their prospective areas. Integrating these two systems will benefit in solving spatial decision making problems. In the past, many researchers have proposed integrating systems which extracts the data from the GIS and saves it in the database for decision making. Most of the frameworks which have been developed were system dependent and are not properly structured. So it is difficult to search the data. This thesis proposes a framework which extracts the GIS data and processes it with the help of ES decision making capabilities to solve the spatial decision making problem. This framework is named GeoFilter. This research classifies various types of mechanisms that can be used to integrate these two systems.

Abstract:
This thesis is concerned with the design and implementation of a Natural Language Based Expert System for a Multimedia Database for radiology applications. The design consists of three independent modules, namely the Natural Language Processor, the Expert System for query analyzing and result outputting, and the Database Management module (query execution module). These modules interact with each other through shared data and storage areas. The thesis emphasizes the integration of an expert system with a database management system to retrieve multimedia data stored in the database. At this stage of the development, all the three modules can interact with each other. The input to the system is a query in English for retrieving the data from the database. The system can check the syntax and semantics of the input queries, generate as well as execute equivalent database queries, and produce adequate results. The Natural Language Interface and the query and result analyzers are written in MPROLOG on a SUN workstation, whereas the database software module is written in C with embedded SQL commands for retrieving the data managed by ORACLE Relational DBMS. Examples of data modeling and the system organization are discussed and some sample runs are illustrated.

Christensen, Dennis K., and Magno O. Pasadilla. "The design of a prototype personal computer database for the Expert System Advisor for Aircraft Maintenance Scheduling (ESAAMS)." Thesis, Monterey, California. Naval Postgraduate School, 1991. http://hdl.handle.net/10945/43763.

Full text
Abstract:
The Expert System Advisor for Aircraft Maintenance Scheduling (ESAAMS) was originally proposed in 1985 to assist in the scheduling of maintenance discrepancy repair in the organizational squadron environment. This dynamic environment produces a continuous flow of maintenance documentation from each maintenance action. Presently there exists no single system for the maintenance expert to retrieve this information to assist him, or her, in the critical maintenance decision making process. This theis addresses the design of the ESAAMS database which is of paramount importance to the expert system. Research on the use of the Naval Aviation Logistics Data Analysis (NALDA) database for a personal computer-based database, is documented. Review of other existing naval aviation database systems are included in this research. Based on interviews with experienced fleet aviation maintenance managers, a prototype database design is produced. This thesis concludes with recommendations for further study based upon the findings of this research.

Matthew, Olumuyiwa Oluwafunto. "Establishing a standard scientific guideline for the evaluation and adoption of multi-tenant database." Thesis, University of Wolverhampton, 2016. http://hdl.handle.net/2436/620518.

Abstract:
A Multi-tenant database (MTD) is a way of deploying a Database as a Service (DaaS). A multi-tenant database refers to a principle where a single instance of a Database Management System (DBMS) runs on a server, serving multiple clients organisations (tenants). This technology has helped to discard the large-scale investments in hardware and software resources, in upgrading them regularly and in expensive licences of application software used on in-house hosted database systems. This is gaining momentum with significant increase in the number of organisations ready to take advantage of the technology. The benefits of MTD are potentially enormous but for any organisation to venture into its adoption, there are some salient factors which must be well understood and examined before venturing into the concept. This research examines these factors, different models of MTD, consider the requirements and challenges of implementing MTDs. Investigation of the degree of impact each of these factors has on the adoption of MTD is conducted in this research which focused mainly on public organisations. The methodology adopted in undertaking this study is a mixed method which involved both qualitative and quantitative research approaches. These strategies are used here to cover statistics (quantifiable data) and experts’ knowledge and experiences (abstract data) in order to satisfactorily achieve the aim and objectives and complete the research. Following the involvement of these strategies, a framework was developed and further refined after a second survey was carried out with a quantitative approach. This framework will help prospective tenants to make informed decisions about the adoption of the concept. The research also considers the direction of decisions about MTDs in situations where two or more factors are combined. A new MTD framework is presented that improves the decision making process of MTD adoption. Also, an Expert System (ES) is developed from the framework which was validated via a survey and analysed with the aid of SPSS software. The findings from the validation indicated that the framework is valuable and suitable for use in practice since majority of respondents accepted the research findings and recommendations for success. Likewise, the ES was validated with majority of participants accepting it and embracing the high level of its friendliness.

Cheng, Iunniang. "Hybrid Methods for Feature Selection." TopSCHOLAR®, 2013. http://digitalcommons.wku.edu/theses/1244.

Full text
Abstract:
Feature selection is one of the important data preprocessing steps in data mining. The feature selection problem involves finding a feature subset such that a classification model built only with this subset would have better predictive accuracy than model built with a complete set of features. In this study, we propose two hybrid methods for feature selection. The best features are selected through either the hybrid methods or existing feature selection methods. Next, the reduced dataset is used to build classification models using five classifiers. The classification accuracy was evaluated in terms of the area under the Receiver Operating Characteristic (ROC) curve (AUC) performance metric. The proposed methods have been shown empirically to improve the performance of existing feature selection methods.
