Abstract:
This is an experimental study in the area of Didactics applied to the learning of English as a foreign language and complemented by CALL. The main objective of this work is to know the degree of incidence existing between two groups of students: one, based on conference-style classes where students, guided by the teacher, have to search for information about a topic in the computer lab and present it in front of the class and, in the other, where students are taught by the teacher according to a printed text. The experimental design consisted of a pre-test/post-test plus the application of different techniques to develop the different linguistic and cognitive strategies, between these tests. The methodology used by the Experimental Group forced learners to generate their own knowledge, so they had to apply the information and work by themselves in Workshops; and the Control Group participated in the classroom according to the communicative approach, guided by the teacher in the traditional class. Statistics were applied to the scores obtained between both tests, and the scores obtained weekly in the different competences contributed to knowing whether there were significant differences between both groups.

Abstract:
Abstract:This paper aims to present a research project on teaching strategies to facilitate the written composition of the argumentative text by 9th grade students aged from 14 to 17 years. This project has a quasi-experimental methodological design with experimental (n = 140) and control (n= 130) groups, and pre, post and retention test. The written composition strategies, which were translated from the Self-Regulated Strategy Development (SRSD) (Harris et al., 2008), and adapted for the Portuguese school context, will be taught to all participating students (n=270). However, depending on experimental or control group, two distinct methods of study of texts aimed to foster the development of ideas, but external to the SRSD (Harris et al., 2008), were associated to their written strategies.Given the effectiveness of SRSD (Harris et al., 2008), which has been proved in over 30 years of research, we focused our research on these different methods for studying texts. Thus far, we aim to verify which of these methods promotes lexical development, and the quality and variety of arguments, to be reversed in argumentative texts produced later by the students both groups. For this, the experimental group will be taught to study texts explicitly and directly in the collaborative context of jigsaw. In turn, the students in the control group will perform individually the study of texts to create ideas. The instructional program is taught once a week in Portuguese classes, over twelve sessions by seven teachers, who participated in training sessions appropriate to each group, experimental or control group. This teaching program was initiated in October 2013 and is running parallel until mid-March 2014 in four basic public schools, three located in the periphery and one in the urban area of Coimbra. The three tests to evaluate the teaching program will be conducted by all participating students and they will be analysed using quantitative and qualitative criteria. Keywords: writing und self-regulated strategy; argumentative text; SRSD; jigsaw; teacher instruction; Portuguese lessons.

Abstract:
Standardized reading comprehension tests (RCTs) usually consist of a small number of texts each accompanied by several multiple-choice questions, with texts and questions simultaneously presented. The score the common measure of reading comprehension ability in RCTs is the score. Literature review suggests that strategies subjects employ may influence their performance on RCT, however the score itself provides no information on the specific strategy employed. Knowledge of test-taking strategies could have impact on understanding of the actual purpose and benefits of using RCTs in pedagogical and psychological practice. With the ultimate objective of constructing a first standard RCT in Serbian language, the preliminary step we took was to conduct an experimental reading comprehension task (ERCT) consisting of 27 short texts displayed in succession, each followed by a single multiplechoice question. Using qualitative analysis of subjects? responses in semi-structured postexperimental interview, we identified four overall strategies used on ERCT. Our results show that groups of students who used specific strategies differed significantly from one another in text reading time, with no differences found regarding the question reading and answering time. More importantly, there were no significant between-group differences found in terms of ERCT score. These findings suggest that choice of strategy is a way to optimize the relation between one?s own potential and ERCT task requirements. RCT based on ERCT principles would allow for a flexible choice of strategy which would not influence the final score.

Abstract:
The article presents the results of a pilot study of the perception of the demotivator and meme genres. It was a part of an experimental study of psychophysiological and psycholinguistic features of perception and understanding of multimodal extremist texts. The aim of the study is to develop and test the hypothesis about the influence of genre on perception of multimodal texts. To test the hypothesis, we analyze the respondents' eye movement data from the main experimental study (n = 60; 31 forensic linguists with anti-extremism practice, 29 non-experts). Research methods were eye-tracking and quantitative data processing. The following statistically reliable data were obtained: compared to memes, respondents looked at demotivators (1) for a longer time, made (2) shorter fixations, (3) with more of them, and also made (4) faster and (5) shorter saccades. These parameters may indicate a denser scanning pattern of viewing demotivators compared to memes and greater cognitive expenditure in assessing the semantic content of demotivator texts. The results of the study suggest a connection between genre and the degree of multimodal texts perception complexity. This provides an opportunity for further research in this direction and, in the future, will enable the development of norms of cognitive load of judicial linguists who analyse multimodal extremist texts.

Abstract:
This study intended to investigate the effect of using authentic texts on Iranian EFL learners' incidental vocabulary learning. To this end, a population of 52 Iranian female EFL learners aged 15 to 17 was selected. They were two intact classes; experimental group (25 students) and control group (27 students). Both groups received a pretest at the first session. Regarding the treatment, the authentic reading texts selected from World News for students of English, Level1 was taught to the experimental group while the texts selected from book 1 was taught to the control group. After a month post-test were run among all of the participants in both control and experimental groups to find out the possible effects of the treatment on the participants' vocabulary improvement. The analysis of data paired samples t-test and independent samples t-test showed that there was a significant difference between the post-tests of experimental and control groups. The experimental group outperformed the control group on the post-test.

Abstract:
Abstract This paper treats Einstein's theory of General Relativity (GR), in particular three of the earliest experiments testing its validity. It covers the de ection of, and the redshift of light in a gravity eld, two new phenomena predicted by GR. The perihelion precession of the planet Mercury and how GR matches observations of it more correctly than classic physics is also covered. In addition to the three older tests above, the more modern application in the GPS system is discussed, and how it can be regarded as a test of GR. Some theoretical questions are also discussed, including comparing classic physics to GR and the classical limit of GR.

Full text
Abstract:
Chapter one of this dissertation provides an experimental test of a joint hypothesis implied by the constant relative risk averse model of first price sealed bid auction theory and standard risk preference theory. This test will be used to determine whether observed risk attitude is solely a characteristic of the individual (as conventional economic theory has it) or jointly a characteristic of the individual and the environment (as some cognitive psychologists maintain). It also presents a simple adjustment to first price auction experiments which causes "throw away" bidding behavior to be dramatically decreased and makes empirical estimation more precise. Standard theoretical search models assume that agents behave as if they search optimally. The second chapter of this dissertation reports the experimental results of a test of whether agents maximize their payouts by optimally searching for the best of n candidates in what has been called the "Secretary Problem." The novelty of this design is that the optimal search rule is invariant to agents' risk attitudes. This is made possible by implementing a binary payout schedule in which stopping at the best candidate pays a positive amount and stopping at any other candidate pays nothing. On average, subjects chose the best candidate slightly less often than an optimal searcher, while the El-Gamal and Grether (1995) estimation procedure suggests that subjects were either using a sub-optimal rule or just randomly guessing.

Paneru, Dilip. "Experimental Tests of Multiplicative Bell Inequalities." Thesis, Université d'Ottawa / University of Ottawa, 2021. http://hdl.handle.net/10393/41621.

Full text
Abstract:
This thesis is the synthesis of theoretical and experimental works performed in the area of quantum foundations, particularly on quantum correlations and experimental tests of multiplicative Bell inequalities. First we begin with a comprehensive theoretical work performed on the foundations of quantum mechanics, focusing on the puzzling concepts of quantum entanglement, and hidden variable theories. Specifically, we present a broad overview of different classes of hidden variable theories such as local, crypto-nonlocal, contextual and non-local theories, along with several Bell like inequalities for these theories, providing theoretical proofs based on quantum mechanics for the falsification of some of these theories. Second we present a body of experimental, and theoretical works performed on a new class of Bell inequalities, i.e., the multiplicative Bell inequalities. We experimentally report the observation of the Bell parameters close to the Tsirelson (quantum) limit, upto a large number of measurement devices $(n)$, and compare the results with a particular deterministic strategy. We also obtain classical bounds for some $n$, and report the experimental violation of these classical limits. We theoretically derive new richer bounds on the CHSH inequality (named after John Clauser, Michael Horne, Abnor Shimony and Richard Holt) and the multiplicative Bell parameter for $n=2$, based on the principle of ``relativistic independence'', and experimentally observe the distribution of Bell parameters as predicted by these bounds.

Puccetti, Giacomo <1988&gt. "Optical Techniques for Experimental Tests in Microfluidics." Doctoral thesis, Alma Mater Studiorum - Università di Bologna, 2016. http://amsdottorato.unibo.it/7534/.

Full text
Abstract:
This PhD dissertation deals with the use of optical, non-invasive measurement techniques for the investigation of single and two-phase flows in microchannels. Different experimental techniques are presented and the achieved results are critically discussed. Firstly, the inverse use of the micro Particle Image Velocimetry technique for the detection of the real shape of the inner cross-section of an optical accessible microchannel is shown by putting in evidence the capability of this technique to individuate the presence of singularities along the wetted perimeter of the microchannel. Then, the experimental measurement of the local fluid temperature using non-encapsulated Thermochromic Liquid Crystal particles is discussed. A deep analysis of the stability of the color of these particles when exposed to different levels of shear stress has been conducted by demonstrating that these particles can be used for simultaneous measurements of velocity and temperature in water laminar flows characterized by low Reynolds numbers (Re < 10). A preliminary experiment where the TLC thermography is coupled to the APTV method for the simultaneous measurement of the three-dimensional velocity and temperature distribution in a microchannel is shown. Finally, an experimental analysis of the different flow patterns observed for an adiabatic air-water mixture generated by means of a micro T-junction is discussed. The main air-water mixture features have been deeply observed in 195 different experimental conditions in which values of superficial velocity ranging between 0.01 m/s and 0.15 m/s for both the inlet flows (air and water) are imposed. The flow patterns of the air-water mixture are strongly influenced by the value of the water superficial velocity; on the contrary, the air superficial velocity plays a secondary role for the determination of the characteristics of the bubbles (i.e. length).

Abstract:
The subject of research refers to changes in the meaning of the lexeme democracy over the past 20 years, noticeable in texts from the Polish press of specific ideological profile. The authors of press texts often expand the meaning, saturating it with emotions and evaluating. On the basis of examples of using a word in texts, there have been definitional sentences created testifying to the extensions of meanings comparing to those found in the Polish language presented in dictionaries. The analysis demonstrates that the understanding of the word democracy depends on the political context and is subject to modifications resulting from ideological entanglements.

Abstract:
Zipf’s Law states that within a given text the frequency of any word is inversely proportional to its rank in the frequency table of the words used in that text. It is a statistical regularity of a power law that occurs ubiquitously in language – so far every language that has been tested was found to display the Zipfian distribution. Toki Pona is an experimental artificial language spoken by hundreds of users. It is extremely minimalistic – its vocabulary consists of mere 120 words. A comparative statistical analysis of two parallel texts in French and Toki Pona showed that even a language of such scarce vocabulary adheres to Zipf’s Law just like natural languages.

Abstract:
Corpus of Modern Greek appeared in 2011. All texts are morphologically annotated. Due to certain peculiarities of Modern Greek morphology, the majority of forms has more than one grammatic interpretation. In this presentation we describe the types of homonyms which are found in the Corpus and discuss possible patterns for automatic disambiguation. At the end, we mention a number of problematic cases that cannot be resolved now or require manual approach.

Abstract:
The sound category of the vowel quantity is applied in the structure of languages in different ways, and its adaptation from one system to another is difficult. The subject of the paper is the difficulties Russian speakers have in the production of Czech texts with more long vowels in a row, i.e., in a situation that does not exist in Russian. Sample of Czech created for the purpose of the experiment and recorded by Russian and Czech native speakers serve as the basis. The success in the realization of quantity in Russian speakers as assessed by Czech native listeners was monitored, and the duration values of short and long vowels and their ratio in the speech of Russian and Czech speakers were compared.

Varma, Amit H., Jan Olek, Christopher S. Williams, Tzu-Chun Tseng, Dan Huang, and Tom Bradt. Post-Fire Assessment of Prestressed Concrete Bridges in Indiana. Purdue University, 2021. http://dx.doi.org/10.5703/1288284317290.

Full text
Abstract:
This project focused on evaluating the effects of fire-induced damage on concrete bridge elements, including prestressed concrete bridge girders. A series of controlled heating experiments, pool fire tests, material tests, and structural loading tests were conducted. Experimental results indicate that the portion of concrete subjected to temperatures higher than 400°C loses significant amounts of calcium hydroxide (CH). Decomposition of CH increases porosity and causes significant cracking. The portion of concrete exposed to temperatures higher than 400°C should be repaired or replaced. When subjected to ISO-834 standard fire heating, approximately 0.25 in. and 0.75 in. of concrete from the exposed surface are damaged after 40 minutes and 80 minutes of heating, respectively. Prestressed concrete girders exposed to about 50 minutes of hydrocarbon fire undergo superficial concrete material damage with loss of CH and extensive cracking and spalling extending to the depth of 0.75–1.0 in. from the exposed surface. These girders do not undergo significant reduction in flexural strength or shear strength. The reduction in the initial stiffness may be notable due to concrete cracking and spalling. Bridge inspectors can use these findings to infer the extent of material and structural damage to prestressed concrete bridge girders in the event of a fire and develop a post-fire assessment plan.
