Abstract:
The aim of the article is to review existing work in experimental philosophy. The experimental philosophy seeks to examine the phenomena that have been traditionally associated with philosophy using the methods that have more recently been developed within cognitive science. Conceptual analysis frequently relies on appeals to intuition, but it is rarely made clear precisely whose intuitions are being discussed. The emphasis in cross-cultural work in experimental philosophy has been shifting toward the study of moral judgments, with papers exploring cross-cultural differences in intuitions about consequentialism and moral responsibility. Philosophers have been working on the relationship between moral responsibility and determinism. One of the key points of contention is whether moral responsibility and determinism are compatible or incompatible. Philosophers working within the framework of the analytic project have long engaged in the study of people's intuitions, but their real interest has not typically been in human beings and the way they think. They work to understand the true nature of the properties and relations that people's concepts pick out. Some philosophers believe that the most important and fundamental issues are somehow getting overlooked as researchers turn more and more to empirically informed work in cognitive science.

Full text
Abstract:
This book aims to explain how and why the detailed three-dimensional architecture of molecules can be determined by an analysis of the diffraction patterns obtained when X rays or neutrons are scattered by the atoms in single crystals. Part 1 deals with the nature of the crystalline state, diffraction generally, and diffraction by crystals in particular, and, briefly, the experimental procedures that are used. Part II examines the problem of converting the experimentally obtained data into a model of the atomic arrangement that scattered these beams. Part III is concerned with the techniques for refining the approximate structure to the degree warranted by the experimental data. It also describes the many types of information that can be learned by modern crystal structure analysis. There is a glossary of terms used and several appendixes to which most of the mathematical details have been relegated.

Witkov, Carey, and Keith Zengel. Chi-Squared Data Analysis and Model Testing for Beginners. Oxford University Press, 2019. http://dx.doi.org/10.1093/oso/9780198847144.001.0001.

Full text
Abstract:
This book is the first to make chi-squared model testing, one of the data analysis methods used to discover the Higgs boson and gravitational waves, accessible to undergraduate students in introductory physics laboratory courses. By including uncertainties in the curve fitting, chi-squared data analysis improves on the centuries old ordinary least squares and linear regression methods and combines best fit parameter estimation and model testing in one method. A toolkit of essential statistical and experimental concepts is developed from the ground up with novel features to interest even those familiar with the material. The presentation of one- and two-parameter chi-squared model testing, requiring only elementary probability and algebra, is followed by case studies that apply the methods to simple introductory physics lab experiments. More challenging topics, requiring calculus, are addressed in an advanced topics chapter. This self-contained and student-friendly introduction to chi-squared analysis and model testing includes a glossary, end-of-chapter problems with complete solutions, and software scripts written in several popular programming languages, that the reader can use for chi-squared model testing. In addition to introductory physics lab students, this accessible introduction to chi-squared analysis and model testing will be of interest to all who need to learn chi-squared model testing, e.g. beginning researchers in astrophysics and particle physics, beginners in data science, and lab students in other experimental sciences.

Full text
Abstract:
This chapter examines short-term (a few generations) selection response in the mean of a trait. Traditionally, such experiments are analyzed using least-squares (LS) approaches. While ordinary LS (OLS) is often used, genetic drift causes the residual to be both correlated and heteroscedastic, resulting in the sampling variances given by OLS being too small. This chapter details the appropriate general LS (GLS) approaches to properly account for this residual error structure. It also reviews some of the common features observed in short-term selection experiments and examines experimental designs, such as the use of a control population versus a divergence-selection approach. It concludes by discussing another linear model used mainly by plant breeders, generation-means analysis (GMA), wherein remnant seed for several generations of response are crossed and then grown in a common garden. Such an analysis can provide insight into the genetic nature of any response.

Jansons, Ernests. Influence of Humidity, Air and Ice Temperature on Sliding Ability Characteristics of Friction Pair Stainless Steel-ice. RTU Press, 2022. http://dx.doi.org/10.7250/9789934227240.

Full text
Abstract:
The influence of environmental parameters (air humidity, air and ice temperature) on the friction pair stainless steel-ice sliding ability is studied in the dissertation. Based on empirical measurements, a sliding time prediction model, depending on environmental conditions and measurement and prediction methodology, was developed. The texture and mechanical properties of the ice surface and the surface texture of steel samples were studied. The macrogeometry of the experimental samples was measured, the factors influencing the measurement accuracy in on-field experiments were analysed, and the experimental results in on-field and laboratory conditions were compared.
