Santana, Jannsen. "Consuming the spiritual market : an ethnography in pilgrimage sites." Thesis, Paris 1, 2022. http://www.theses.fr/2022PA01E008.
Full textThis dissertation is concentrated in the intersection between the commercial and the spiritual to understand how spiritual experiences are lived by consumers. We are aligned with the recently constituted field of Consumer Spirituality (Husemann & Eckhardt, 2019a, p. 393) that considers the "practices and processes engaged in when consuming market offerings (products, services, places) that yield 'spiritual utility'". Through an interpretive ethnographic approach in four Catholic pilgrimage sites in Latin America and Europe, this research reveals the patterns and differences of the spiritual consumption between and across each case studied. The findings highlight 12 themes emerged from the analysis that are related to the tensions andagreements between the spiritual and the commercial, the collective and individualized experience of pilgrims, the consumption of the spiritual as coping strategy do deal with mundane problems, the embodied and material consumption of the pilgrimage, and also issues related to accessibility, sustainability and over consumption in pilgrimage settings. This doctoral research therefore contributes to the literature on the marketization of the sacred, coping mechanisms, embodiment, materiality and other societal issues

The enquiry is organised around a social and historical perspective about the Universal White Brotherhood, a community created in 1990, in Bulgaria. The group takes his place among complex of movements, namely The Mesmerism, the spiritism, the modern theosophy of Blavatsky, Rudolf Steiner's anthroposophy, the movement of G. Gurdjieff. The theoretical view corresponding to the exploration of this context introduces the concept of a modern mystic and a laical spiritual experience, attempting to build a general interpretative system of mysticism, leading to a synthetic model of dynamic of the psyché

Full textThe first part of this thesis includes a critical edition of the order of the temple's rule (1120-1314), the first order in Christianity to be at once a military and a religious one. The edition of the latin text, which was approved at the council of Troyes in 1129, is followed by its version in the 'oil' language. The two editions are enlarged with an apparatus of their variations and sources, as well as with a glossary. A chapter is dedicated to the analysis of the tradition of the templar’s rule and statutes. One will find a list of the mentions of these texts in the inventories of medieval libraries, as well as the census and description of the existing manuscripts of the order's standard texts. The second part contains the study of the genesis of the rule. This includes the analysis of the prologue, the identification of the members of the council, the attribution to Hughes de Payns, the first great master of the order, of the letter intituled christi militihus, and the datation, previous to the council of Troyes, of that letter and of Saint Bernard's de laude nove militie. In the third part, a summary and a commentary of the latin and french texts give account of the spirituality of the rule. This contains the analysis of the sources of the rule - essentially from saint Benok's rule - and the identifying of the loci paralleli. Through some articles, more deeply studied, one can perceive the church's effort to contain the newness of the order within institutional channels (the temple monk was also paradoxically a knight). There, 'anti-ascetic' and 'anti-heroic' tendencies are accentuated. The rule sees that the templar is in good physical condition in order to fight, but it forbids hunting, 'prowess' and 'largess' which are chivalry characteristics. The commentary of the french version shows differences between the french translation and the original latin text. One can suppose that the latin text is like the proceedings of the council. On the other hand, the french draft is different and more rational. It might correspond to Hugues de Payns's proposal to the council of Troyes. The french version shows that when the templar's status was approved by the council, practical exigencies overrode the spirituality of the rule
Teisenhoffer, Viola. "Produire un soi spirituel : pratiques et expériences rituelles dans l’umbanda du Temple Guaracy de Paris (France)." Thesis, Paris 10, 2015. http://www.theses.fr/2015PA100089.
Full textThe Temple Guaracy de Paris is part of an international Umbanda shrine house located in Brazil and also established in several European and North American countries. In order to offer participants a “spiritual development”, in France and its other locales, the Temple draws on the mediumistic practice of Umbanda, an Afro-Brazilian religion focused on the worship of spiritual entities and divinities related to nature, in the elaboration of its ceremonial activities. The Temple is thus part of the wider universe of contemporary spiritual practices. This thesis studies the ritual mechanisms that bestow participants a special identity which allows them to define themselves as “being spiritual”. The detailed description and the formal analysis of the group’s ritual practices aim to define the pragmatic foundations of the identity processes at work in this context. They show that mediumistic practice consists of revealing the participants to themselves and to others in a new perspective which is that of the spiritual entities invoked in ritual, endowed with the capability to unveil the “real nature” of human beings. The making of a spiritual self by this means depends on complex relational shifts generated by a subtly regulated ritual device which produces ambiguous and “extraordinary” persons who are both humans and entities. The spiritual sense of self produced in this way enables participants to engage in and to create analogous practices that make up the universe of contemporary spirituality

Full textThe Third spiritual alphabet by the franciscan F. De Osuna (Toledo 1527), is the finest jowel of affective spanish theology. This non-scholastic spiritual path offers access to contemplation for all. However, contrary to the beliefs of adepts of Illumination, Recollection demands exacting asceticism founded on spiritual practice. In a deeply troubled period for the Church, but preceding the schism that would herald the Reformation, Osuna, who attaches great importance to differentiating Erasmus Philosophia Christi from Theologia cordis, turns the latter into an ambitious evangelical project of self-Reformation of the Church through self-reform of hearts. Osuna, metaphorically, “stages” the triumph of love and desire by establishing “portable” intimate paradise. In this manner, several decades before the major literary and pictorial achievements of the Baroque period, the vast enterprise of Propaganda fidei of the Counter-Reformation starts taking shape via our franciscan' pen
Zapponi, Elena. "La recomposition du croire : pratiques pélerines vers Saint-Jacques-de-Compostelle." Paris, EHESS, 2006. http://www.theses.fr/2006EHES0060.
Full textThis work concerns the social functioning of the contemporary pilgrimage to Santiago de Compostela, based on fieldwork carried out in 1998, 1999 and 2002. The main thesis is that this pilgrimage has become a metaphor for 'going forth' and 'life as a journey' and is no longer only travelled by Catholics but attracts a much larger international and intergenerational public. The surroundings are conducive to both the religious experience within the Catholic Christian tradition and to a self identity quest, personalising the camino and distancing it from the Church's idea of a 'pilgrimage'. In this context, the word camino becomes fundamental for understanding the different spiritual attitudes implied in the walk and the reconstruction of believing on this pilgrim route
Billoteau, Elisabeth Emmanuelle. "Julian de Norwich, mystique et théologie." Thesis, Strasbourg, 2014. http://www.theses.fr/2014STRAK006.
Full textWhat are the main characteristics of a theology stemming from a mystic experience ? This thesis attempts to answer this question by examining an individual case, that of The Showings of Julian of Norwich (C14th- C15th). The Long Text of this opus enables us to observe a development in the fields of anthropology, Christology and Trinitarian theology. Firmly rooted in her experience of life, Julian’s theological discourse is interwoven with the emotions drawn from that experience. Julian speaks about God in speaking to God and in establishing with her « fellow Christians » an emotional and noetic community. But a mystical experience does not automatically give birth to a mystical theology as understood by Pseudo-Dionysius and Jean Gerson. We are rather in the presence of a prophetical and visionary theology that is fully conscious of its partial, limited, and contextualised nature. We find ourselves at a turning-point in the history of theology and spirituality, which sees the emergence of two separate fields that of scholastic theology and that of spirituality, where previously patristic theology bore witness to a profound unity. The different methodologies used in this research are in the service of a study within two distinct fields : those of theology and the history of spirituality

Full textThe religious landscape in Quebec has changed profoundly, even though the disaffection of the Catholic churches, some forms of devotion remain important, especially the devotion to Saint Brother André. Canonized by Pope Benedict XVI in October 2010, Saint Brother André is the first Canadian-born male Saint. He is responsible for the construction of Saint Joseph’s Oratory, the largest shrine dedicated to Saint Joseph in the world, and he is an important figure in Quebec. According to the Sanctuary’s data, every year, two million visitors visit the Oratory. These visitors have several profiles, they are either devout people from Montreal or the surrounding area, religious tourists, or pilgrims. This thesis deals with the devotion to Saint Brother André at the Saint Joseph Oratory of Mount Royal. The main objective is to understand the expressions and practices of this popular devotion as well as the experience lived by the devotees in this place of pilgrimage, using an ethnographic approach, which is based on a combined archival study of prayer intentions collected at the Oratory during the years 2010 and 2018. The ten observations made in the five places of prayer dedicated to Saint Brother André, the fifty interviews conducted with devotees and the study of about a hundred prayer intentions highlight the relationship of trust and friendship that people have with the Saint. This relationship is sustained by the perception of manifestations attributed to the divine, such as healing miracles, apparitions, and visions that, for the devotees, testify to the existence of an exchange of goods of charity between Heaven and Earth. This thesis shows the importance of the role of intercessor of Saint Brother André in the collective memory of Quebec, as evidenced by the historical relations that many families have developed with the Saint. Prayer is the first place of the encounter, the vehicle through which the devotees meet and communicate with Saint Brother André. As for devotional practices, they are expressed in many forms: relics, devotional spaces, statues, objects of piety, oil of Saint Joseph, images, worship, pilgrimages, etc. Since popular devotion is not controlled by the religious institution, it gives free rein to spontaneous religious expressions both in rituals and in votive writing.

Full textSelf-writing has come to constitute a literary genre which is difficult to define yet is part of a long tradition offering writers various means and methods of approaching their own psyche and body of work. The publication of personal notebooks written by major authors indeed demonstrates the crucial role played by this intimate practice in the elaboration of intellectual systems. Literary studies have nevertheless tended to neglect the transformational impact of this specific form of writing. Simone Weil, a French mystic and philosopher of the 20th century, has particularly enriched the genre of self-writing. The numerous notebooks she wrote show the construction of a deep and vivid mind that associates intellectual creation with strong self-discipline. The present master’s thesis will aim at highlighting the fundamental role of the notebook within the creative process of this philosopher. Such a perspective should shed new light on certain aspects of the academic literature dedicated to Weil’s works. The Introduction of this thesis offers an overview of the Western tradition of personal notebooks, which exerted a vast influence on Weil’s writings. Since Greek antiquity, writing in the first person has been an important part of self-improvement exercises, aimed at spiritual perfection. This approach is particularly visible in the hypomnêmata – taking of notes – introduced by Greek and Roman philosophical schools and developed in early Christian monastic practices focused on self-sacrifice. Once this context has been established, the main body of the thesis will focus more specifically on Weil’s notebooks. A first chapter will present her life and works, which will then allow for a focus on certain themes present in her personal writing. I will begin by focusing on self- mastery through means of writing in the first person. Next, I will analyse the importance of subjectivity in this philosopher’s worldview, before dealing with the rich intertextuality of Weil’s notebooks. Finally, I will deal with the influence of Weil’s personal experience on her own concept of décréation. The importance of writing in the inspiration process will be of particular interest in this final chapter. The main objective of this thesis is to analyse Weil’s writings through the lens of self-writing. It additionally aims at broadening analytical perspectives on the importance of personal writing in the construction of self and insisting on the role of the notebook as a life companion for the writer.
