Abstract:
AbstractA locally inverse semigroup is a regular semigroup S with the property that eSe is inverse for each idempotent e of S. Motivated by natural examples such as inverse semigroups and completely simple semigroups, these semigroups have been the subject of deep structure-theoretic investigations. The class ℒ ℐ of locally inverse semigroups forms an existence variety (or e-variety): a class of regular semigroups closed under direct products, homomorphic images and regular subsemigroups. We consider the lattice ℒ(ℒℐ) of e-varieties of such semigroups. In particular we investigate the operations of taking meet and join with the e-variety CS of completely simple semigroups. An important consequence of our results is a determination of the join of CS with the e-variety of inverse semigroups – it comprises the E-solid locally inverse semigroups. It is shown, however, that not every e-variety of E-solid locally inverse semigroups is the join of completely simple and inverse e-varieties.

Abstract:
A natural concept of variety for regular semigroups is introduced: an existence variety (or e-variety) of regular semigroups is a class of regular semigroups closed under the operations H, Se, P of taking all homomorphic images, regular subsernigroups and direct products respectively. Examples include the class of orthodox semigroups, the class of (regular) locally inverse semigroups and the class of regular E-solid semigroups. The lattice of e-varieties of regular semigroups includes the lattices of varieties of inverse semigroups and of completely regular semigroups. A Birkhoff-type theorem is proved, showing that each e-variety is determined by a set of identities: such identities are then given for many e-varieties. The concept is meaningful in universal algebra, and as for regular semigroups could give interesting results for e-varieties of regular rings.

AbstractThis paper documents the existence of swiping – that is, inversion of a wh-phrase and its associated preposition under sluicing – in a non-Germanic language. We discuss swiping in a variety of Ontario French (Lafontaine French, LFF), which shares some of the characteristics of its extensively-studied English counterpart (Ross 1969, Merchant 2002, among others). We offer a preliminary description of swiping in LFF and consider some implications of these novel facts for the theory of swiping and sluicing. We suggest that LFF swiping supports an analysis in terms of non-constituent deletion, as originally suggested by Ross (1969) in his seminal work on sluicing.

National models of social action over-privilege continuity and uniformity. They discount change — which they lack the capacity to explain (other than through exogenous shocks) — and neglect diversity within countries. This paper focuses on the national culture model which it argues requires commitment to illogical arguments and to suppositions which are theoretically and empirically untenable. An evaluation of each, it is argued, points to the existence of, and possibilities for, considerable national diversity and change — not pervasive and enduring national uniformity. Reflecting on the model’s rise and fall in anthropology, the paper also provides an outline explanation of its retention within organization studies and speculates about its future within that discipline.

The problems of psychological contracts have been investigated by world scientific circles for years now. In Poland this concept is relatively unknown. The goal of this study is to present selected elements from the theories discussing the genesis, the essence, main types and dynamics of such contracts. It also presents the results of empirical tests concerning an influence of four selected features characterizing researched employees (sex, age, position and form of employment) upon the contents of their psychological contracts. The study proves the existence of considerable differences observed in the measured dimensions. This fact should call upon the employers for taking actively into consideration this particular variety when managing the people in organisations.

Abstract:
For a distinctive variety of English to subsist and be acknowledged in Hong Kong, localization is not enough. Indigenization through general acceptance is also necessary, but will not easily be forthcoming, regardless of the claims and assertions of linguists in Hong Kong or elsewhere regarding the existence of a distinctive ‘Hong Kong English’. In addition, Hong Kong teachers of English will not accept or adopt distinctive local usages in their classrooms, regardless of the everyday use of such usages. The sociolinguistic situation is increasingly triglossic, in terms of the three languages Cantonese, Putonghua, and English, each of which has distinct functions in terms of Hong Kong, mainland China, and the world at large. A dominant ideology of linguistic purism impels people to seek outside standards with regard to both English and Putonghua, and to deny that there is a viable local variety of English, despite the length of time that the language has been used in Hong Kong.

Žutica, the major variety on Montenegrin Coast, belongs to the group of olive varieties for oil production, with oil content in average above 21%. During the research of the properties of Žutica variety, the existence of variability in the oil content was recorded. In order to determine the degree of the variability of oil content within this variety, the fruits of 42 accessions were analyzed. The results confirmed high content of oil as well as the existence of variability of this parameter between the studied accessions. Twenty two accessions had the content of oil of over 20%, while 13 accessions had the oil content greater than 22% in fresh matter. The highest oil content was in fruit of VAL2 (24.3%) and in dry matter in DUB (63.77%). The results suggest Žutica accessions (clones) with higher oil content promising for spread in the new plantations.

Ian Hacking's [6] is a spirited romp though a broad field of metaphysics, touching on a variety of important questions, and appealing to deep results in mathematical logic while remaining free of logical pedantry. Philosophical journals might be more fun to read if others could write in his style. It is an essay in applying the theory of logic expounded in more detail in his very interesting [7]. (Goran Sundholm, in [15], has raised grave difficulties for Hacking's notion of a ‘do-it-yourself’ semantics, but the overall project remains attractive. In particular, I find Hacking's contention that he has captured the notion of logic that Whitehead and Russell were working with both convincing and intriguing.) Unfortunately, despite my sympathy for his project, I have a number of criticisms to make of his argument. Some of them are picky logical points, but the major conclusions of [6] are affected.

Over the last decade, astronomical observations show that the acceleration of the expansion of the universe is greater than expected from our understanding of conventional general relativity, the mass density of the visible universe, the size of the visible universe and other astronomical measurements. The additional expansion has been attributed to a variety of phenomenon that have been given the general name of dark energy. Dark energy in the universe seems to comprise a majority of the energy in the visible universe amounting to about three times the total mass energy. But locally the dark energy density is very small. However it is not zero. In this paper I describe the work of others and myself on the question of whether dark energy density can be directly detected. This is a work-in-progress and I have no answer at present.

Abstract:
In this paper we propose primitive conditions under which a projection of a conditional density onto a set defined by conditional moment restrictions exists and is unique. Moreover, we provide an analytic expression of the obtained projection. The range of applications where conditional density projections are used is wide. The derived results are potentially useful in a variety of areas including: semiparametric efficient estimation and optimal testing in (conditional) moment models, Bayesian prior determination and inference in semiparametric models, density forecasting, and simulation-based econometric analysis.Regarding existence, we propose three different combinations of assumptions that are all sufficient to show that the projection exists and is unique. The proposed conditions exhibit a clear trade off between restrictions put on the divergence between the conditional densities and on the moment function which defines the projection set. Depending on the nature of the application, the researcher can pick and choose which set of conditions to use. Our second set of results characterizes the projection. The expression for the projected density is new though not surprising given the previously obtained results for the unconditional case. The projection is characterized by the dual of the original projection problem. In establishing the strong duality, however, we work with a constraint qualification condition that is weaker than that used by Borwein and Lewis (1991a, 1992a, 1993 in their seminal work concerning the unconditional case.

Abstract K-polystability of a polarized variety is an algebro-geometric notion conjecturally equivalent to the existence of a constant scalar curvature Kähler metric. When a variety is K-unstable, it is expected to admit a ‘most destabilizing’ degeneration. In this note we show that if such a degeneration exists, then the limiting scheme is itself relatively K-semistable.

This paper discusses viable solutions for differential inclusions in Banach spaces. Existence will be established in two steps. In step 1, a nonlinear alternative of Leray-Schauder type [8] for maps with closed graphs will be used to establish a variety of existence principles for the Cauchy differential inclusion. Step 2 involves using the results in step 1 together with some tricks involving the Bouligand cone (and sometimes the Urysohn function) so that new existence criteria can be established for multivalued differential equations on proximate retracts.

Abstract:
The article attempts to highlight the traces of memory in the theory, history and practice of architecture. The subject of research is the existing forms of memory in architecture. It is traditionally accepted that the “history of architecture” as a science is the main repository of knowledge about the evolution of architecture. Facts and artifacts, descriptions of monuments and cities are retained in it. The article emphasizes that the traditional “history of architectural objects” is not the only form of memory. Another equally important and complicated aspect of the architectural memory is detected during the decoding of the evolution of project activity and its language. Analysis of the evolution of architecture allowed us to differentiate the epochs in which historical thinking prevails: the Renaissance, Romanticism, Eclecticism, Art Deco, Postmodernism. They are characterized by such ways of thinking as dialogical, historical and typological, historical and associative. They are opposed to design approaches in which abstract thinking dominates (Art Nouveau and Modernism). The article shows that the concept of architectural memory has many shades and manifests itself in a variety of different forms of professional consciousness. As historical knowledge, memory exists in such forms as: a chronological description, science of history, evolutionary studies, catalog of styles, museum, archive. In designing and its language, memory is represented in such forms as canon, dialogue with bygone era, norm, architectural fantasy, remembrance, historical association, reconstruction, restoration and others. It is shown that the most important way of storing and transferring information is the architectural language and compositional logic. Postmodern consciousness raised the problem of loss of memory and the development of architectural language and communication of culture.

Full text
Abstract:
Recursion theory has been dominated by one example. The notion of a dominical category was introduced (see [2] and [3]) at least in part in the hope of subverting this dominance. The structures of number theory, freed from this original context, led to much of modern algebra with a consequent enrichment of number theory itself: it seemed not unreasonable to attempt to contribute, however modestly, to a similar development of recursion theory. Thus (in the loosest sort of analogy) recursion categories are intended to stand in relation to the class of partial recursive functions as rings do to the rational integers. But if such a generalization is to serve its intended purpose, it ought to allow examples substantially different in spirit from the prototype. Recursion categories are, of course, the proper generalization of classical recursion theory. As a novice in this formidable field I am incapable of encompassing its full extent and must rely on the advice of others (I thank in particular R. DiPaola) in concluding that most of these earlier generalizations are not of this character. Indeed, the examples of recursion categories so far adduced (cf., in addition to the references above, [1] and [4]) are themselves closely tied to the classical one.We attempt here to open the door to radically disparate examples by proving an existence theorem allowing the construction of recursion categories in a wide, and so far unexplored, variety of contexts very distant from that of the natural or ordinal numbers and their subsets, the locus of the traditional theory. In order to do this, it has been necessary to introduce a number of unfamiliar notions—unfamiliar, that is, even in the context of the earlier discussion of dominical categories. This novelty is perhaps mitigated by the fact that, however unfamiliar, they cannot be said to be unusual, as the discussion later will show. We mention in particular those of a “formally free semigroup”, which retains the indexation function of a free semigroup, while giving up the characteristic universal property and that of “uniform generation”, which generalizes finite generation in the fashion assorted to our argument.

Abstract:
There is frequently an assumption that fixed dualisms are no longer relevant (Thorne 1993) so that socially constructed and differentially valued gendered cultures no longer exist. Gender, however, has not been consistently referred to as an outdated or zombie category (Beck and Beck-Gernsheim 2002), while a variety of evidence suggests that male priorities, choices and lifestyles are differentially valued (UN 1995; O'Connor 2000). Drawing on a national one in ten random sample of 4,100 texts written by Irish young people, typically aged 10–12 and 14–17 years, in response to an invitation to describe ‘themselves and the Ireland they inhabit’, this article suggests that aspects of their narratives (relating to relationships and lifestyles) reflect the existence of gender differentiated cultures, although these ‘two cultures’ are much less apparent in their narratives about time, space and consumption. Finally, the paper touches on the implications of these trends for understanding contemporary Irish society.

Studies of Greek as spoken today in Cyprus draw attention to a generalised variety of Cypriot Greek, free from local variation within the island, yet diverging in several ways from the standard spoken on the mainland. In this article, I attempt first to classify this variety, examining whether it exhibits structural and sociohistorical characteristics of koinés. Having established today's generalised Cypriot variety as a koiné, I then trace its evolution, arguing that an early koiné already came into existence in the late 14th c., playing an important role in the formation of both the modern Cypriot dialect and today's koiné.

Abstract:
Introduction The enlarged parietal foramen (EPF) is a defect in the ossification of the parietal bone that is well described in the literature using a variety of nomenclatures. Individuals with EPF can present symptoms such as migraines, vomiting and intense pain when light pressure is applied to the skull. However, it can go unnoticed for a lifetime. Materials and Methods At the Human Bone Collection department of the Universidade Federal de Pernambuco, 2 craniums (CAV 90, 96 years old and CAV 16, 81 years old) and were identified as having EPF, both from females. Results There was no apparent kinship between both craniums. The sagittal length, the coronal width, the sagittal suture distance, the coronal suture distance and the lambdoid suture distance of each enlarged parietal foramen were evaluated, with the following results: sagittal length: 5.5 cm (CAV 90), and 5.0 cm (CAV 16); coronal width: 3.1 cm (CAV 90),and 3.4 cm (CAV 16); sagittal suture distance: 2.9 cm (CAV 90), and 2.3 cm (CAV 16); coronal suture distance: 1.8 cm (CAV 90), and 4.6 cm (CAV 16); and lambdoid suture distance: 5.0 cm (CAV 90), and 3.0 cm (CAV 16). The parietal foramen of both craniums exhibited equivalent measurements. Conclusion Due to the low incidence of EPF, the identification of the 2 craniums with this condition in a collection of 105 skeletons makes the discovery relevant. In reference to craniums exhibiting EPF, this is an important tool for study and forensic research, since its appearance is linked to heredity.

Abstract:
A newly cloned gene named wild-type p53-activated fragment 1 (WAF1; also known as p21, Pic-1, Cip-1, or SDI1) is directly regulated by p53 and can itself suppress tumor cell growth in culture. Induction of expression of WAF1 may be an important means by which cells with DNA injury arrest their growth to repair DNA or undergo apoptosis. Based on the hypothesis that mutations of this gene may play a role in carcinogenesis, we have studied 351 DNAs from 14 kinds of malignancies, as well as 36 human transformed cell lines, for alterations of WAF1 gene by single-strand conformation polymorphism analysis of polymerase chain reaction amplification of the DNA coding region of the WAF1 gene. No abnormal band shifts of WAF1 were noted in any of the samples or cell lines, but three major variants in exons 2 and 3 of the gene were found that are consistent with the existence of two different DNA polymorphisms. Sequence analysis of the amplified products producing these three variants in each exon from normal DNAs confirmed the presence of the polymorphisms in the WAF1 gene. Of 290 selected tumor samples previously evaluated for p53 mutations by single-strand conformation polymorphism, 90% had no detectable p53 alterations. In summary, mutations within the coding portion of the WAF1 gene were undetectable in a large series of human tumors, many of which had a normal p53 gene. This suggests that WAF1 alterations are generally caused indirectly, through p53 mutations rather than through intragenic mutation of the WAF1 itself.
