Alex, Roger. "Concept development of framework or interactive exhibition." Thesis, KTH, Maskinkonstruktion (Inst.), 2010. http://urn.kb.se/resolve?urn=urn:nbn:se:kth:diva-99332.

Abstract:
This Master Thesis was started with The Interactive Institutes's department for Art & Technology . The project was to further develop a concept they had created for subscription exhibitions. The core idea of the concept was centered around a computer screen that was to show an interactive video artwork that the user could interact with by rotating the screen around the display stand. The goal of the project was to develop their concept to such a degree that it would be possible to manufacture a finished product. Initially this included both the development of a framework for the construction as well as the design of an exterior shell. After initial research and consultation with the commissioner it was however decided to shift the focus of the project to the development of the framework. This so that the exterior design in a later stage could be created to suit the profile of multiple customers and thus make for a more versatile solution. The desired result of the work was to contain the documentation needed for construction and to enable the concept for an external designer to come in at a later stage and create the exterior shell. The developed concept consisted of three main parts, first the main body that enabled the height adjusting function to enable a hide range of users, then the head that contains the rotary function as well as being prepared to house the needed electronic components and lastly the areas that have been prepared for the attachment of an exterior shell. This way an almost completely finished solution was created. The finished result consists of a list of parts for material and components as well as technical drawings for the manufacture of desired parts and assembly. Future work could include the manufacture of a prototype so that any problems can be isolated and rectified. With the aid of a prototype it would also be easier to bring in users to asses their reactions to the product and also to gauge how different designs would alter the user experience. With time permitting it could also be of interest to delve into related areas that could expand the usability of the concept.

Smith, Daniel Charles Patrick. "City revealed : the process and politics of exhibition development : a thesis presented in partial fulfilment of the requirements for the degree of Master of Arts in Museum Studies at Massey University, Palmerston North, New Zealand." Massey University. School of Maori Studies, 2003. http://hdl.handle.net/10179/253.

Abstract:
This thesis examines the ways in which the process of exhibition development and the politics this involves affects the practice of history in the museum. It does this by establishing the broad parameters of history practice in the museum and places this in relation to academic practice, focusing on the New Zealand context and specifically upon Auckland War Memorial Museum. From this basis the thesis examines the development of City exhibition at Auckland Museum as a large-scale museum history exposition. The development process for this exhibition was created with the aim of changing the traditional Museum approach so as to create a more engaging and scholarly history exhibition than is traditional. At the same time however, there was also an aim of retaining the appearance of the traditional Museum within this programme of change. These aims were to be met by the innovation of the collaboration between an academic historian and the Museum's practitioners in the development process. The research is based upon a detailed investigation of the roles played by the exhibition team members and the decisions, negotiations and compromises that they made through the development process. Beginning with their original intentions and concepts for the exhibition its metamorphosis into the exhibition as it was installed in the Museum gallery is traced. Emphasis is placed on the resonance that the various decisions and changes carried into the finished exhibition. The findings indicate that the Museum's traditions of developing and displaying knowledge exerted a strong conservative effect over the exhibition development in conflict with the programme of change. This conservatism vied with the authorial intentions of the exhibition development team. As a result of this influence the exhibition developed leant towards the conventional. The unexpectedly orthodox outcome resulted from the absence of critical museological practice. The thesis argues that although Auckland Museum had undergone extensive restructuring, including the introduction of new exhibition development processes and a new outlook as an organisation, the conception of history in the Museum had not changed. Ultimately this precluded that the practice of history in the institution would advance through the revised exhibition development process. However, the development of City did help achieve the updating of social history in the Museum and remains a platform upon which a more critical approach to the past can be built.

Lin, Chung-Hung. "Establishing a development process for science museum exhibition design." Thesis, Birmingham City University, 2002. http://ethos.bl.uk/OrderDetails.do?uin=uk.bl.ethos.272155.

Abstract:
As museum exhibition design becomes technically complex and design teams more specialised and fragmented, the need to plan, co-ordinate and increase the quality of the design process is becoming more important. According to a preliminary analysis of science museums, multi-disciplinary, targeted, technology-based exhibits are replacing traditional object based displays; therefore, a specifically multi-disciplinary model is necessary to develop a workable museum exhibitiond design process (MEDP) model. This research explores the theoryo of design processes and museum exhibitions as a means of developing an MEDP model and takes a comprehensive look at how design process models are currently used in developing museum exhibitions. It aims at establishin ga process model specifically for inter-disciplinary exhibition design work in science museums, which is theory-base and can be used as a prescriptive design aid to enhance the effective use of design information. Research methods comprise an exploratory study of literature and collected data, the development of surveys and case studies and their analysis in terms of MEDP methodology. The research examines theoretical (architectural, product and exhibition) models and develops a small number of case studies showing how design concepts are managed in real-world practice. A live case 'The Discovery Centre at Millennium Point' was used to observe two exhibition design projects in progress and to provide an overview of practical processs in design development. In addition, other case studies of `completed' museum exhibition design projects were developed by physical site surveys, questionnaires and interviews. The MEDP model is constructed from data flow diagrams generically representing the tasks involved and the associated information flows in a consistent manner and was evaluated for its concept development capability by designers and curators. Future development is also considered in relation to museology, design management and project management.

Abstract:
During the Spring 2006 semester, Virginia Commonwealth University students enrolled in the graduate Museum Studies course on exhibition development collaboratively curated an exhibition entitled From the Seat of Authority, which opened at the Anderson Gallery in June 2006. This thesis project documents the exhibition and offers an account of the deliberative and creative development process in which student-curators engaged. It is different from other case studies that focus on the technical aspects of curating an exhibition.Major components of the development process include articulating a theme, selecting artworks, writing interpretive text, and designing display techniques. This thesis project aims to characterize the development of these components in relationship to the overall creative processes. It is important to note that the previously mentioned four components were not developed independently of one another, as the exhibit development process was non-linear and organic.

Abstract:
For about the first fifteen years after its commercial introduction motion picture entertainment throughout the United States was supported almost entirely by the mass of urban industrial workers, immigrants and their families. Beginning a few years before 1910 motion pictures began acquiring regular support from a limited element of the more affluent citizens until by the end of 1916 they constituted motion pictures' primary audience. This paper examines the audience development and conversion as it occurred in the downtown theaters of Portland, Oregon. Motion pictures were shown to two diverse audiences in Portland during the 1890s, regularly on a mass level to the lower income strata and sporadically to regular stage theater audiences. Their expectations differed greatly. Urban workers craved entertainment for the sake of diversion while middle and upper class audiences required responsibility and purpose in their entertainments. After the turn of the century when big time vaudeville established itself in Portland films were supported almost entirely by the lower class element in arcades and vaudeville theaters. Motion pictures in these venues catered to their audiences' tastes. During the 4-5 year period after nickelodeons developed in 1906 a small number of Portland's middle class became regular patrons, due partially to national imposition of licensing and establishment of a censorship board fostering a more respectable image. After 1910, when national support for motion pictures had been proven permanent and unsatisfied, large movie palaces emerged in Portland. These theaters and their amenities created atmospheres consistent with those of stage theaters, providing comfortable and familiar surroundings for middle class audiences. Industrywide developments such as increased story length, better quality productions and evidence of social responsibility enhanced the ease of middle class transition from the stage theater to the movie theater.

Abstract:
This thesis discusses some aspects of the exhibition designer's role in state museums and galleries. It draws on the author's experiences in Singapore and his observations as a student living in Sydney. Museum exhibition designers are servants of the state. They help create public culture and promote a version of history. But if one is to understand the ways in which designers create meaning (and serve their employer's interests) we need to identify the 'vocabulary' and 'grammar' that they have at their disposal. To this end, the thesis outlines the variables that they work with and argues that they need to understand their employer's ideologies and history. The design vocabulary and grammar that the exhibition designer works with to create meaning in bridging understanding needs to be commensurate with the knowledge of history and the primary ideologies of the state which he/she serves. Singapore's recent interest in arts and heritage museums as part of a larger desire for regional economic and cultural survival and pre-eminence needs to be identified with the evolution, interconnectedness and ambitions of Singapore's arts and cultural organisations. In conjunction, some of the implications of Singapore's Arts and Heritage Policy need to be unpacked. A brief but concise comparative history of Sydney, Australia is made for the arts, cultural and museum comparison between Australia and Singapore. The exhibition designer's vocabulary and grammar can then be used to evaluate four exhibitions in Sydney and Singapore. This dissertation addresses the issues of 'Asian-ness' , modernisation without westernisation and the state's desire to meet the challenges which global communication systems place upon Singapore citizen's welfare. The dissertation is very art focused. It discusses all display objects as though they were paintings and works of fine art

The proposed expansion of the Boston Convention and Exhibition Center was approved by the Massachusetts legislature in 2009. In 2010, the governor put the expansion on hold citing an overstated economic impact. Proponents argue that expanding the convention center will lead to increased occupancy and significant economic benefits. But do the benefits outweigh the costs? The first part of this thesis provides an overview of the convention center market in the US as well as two case studies of convention centers that have undergone expansions. The second part closely examines the history and performance of the Boston Convention and Exhibition Center using data from the Massachusetts Convention Center Authority along with data from various other sources to project realistic economic costs and benefits of the expansion as currently proposed.

Hanson, Stuart. "Contemporary developments in cinema exhibition." Thesis, De Montfort University, 2014. http://hdl.handle.net/2086/11105.

Full text
Abstract:
The work offered for this PhD by Published Works charts the history of cinema exhibition in Britain from the late 1950s to the present. At the start of this period, cinemagoing as a form of public entertainment entered a long period of decline that was only arrested with the development and growth of multiplex cinemas in the 1980s and 1990s. Despite these changes, the feature film itself remained a culturally and commercially valuable artefact, though increasingly this meant the Hollywood film. Whilst due consideration is afforded to the technological changes in cinemas and the cinema apparatus, my work places the development of cinemagoing in a broad social, economic, cultural and political context, and explains how these issues impact upon on-going developments. In the late 1950s, cinemagoing declined partly in response to changing leisure habits, demographic shifts, the growth of consumer culture, television, and the widespread adoption of new broadcast technologies like home video and satellite. The multiplex returned feature films to cinemas, but was a definitively American commercial form closely associated with new forms of leisure and out-of-town retailing. There are also parallels between the context for development of the multiplex in the USA – suburbanisation, shopping malls and reliance on the motorcar – and developments in Britain in the last 30 years. To this end there is a specific emphasis on the development of the multiplex cinema as part of a wider narrative about the re-positioning of cinemagoing as a collective, public form of visual entertainment, in the period from the mid-1980s, in the context of some dramatic changes in the transient nature of capitalism and urban planning. From the early 1990s onwards there was a growing anxiety about the impact of out-of-town developments on Britain’s urban centres, and a concomitant and renewed emphasis on the importance of the urban core rather than the edge. Thus, the key to understanding the evolution of cinema exhibition today is to pay particular attention to urban planning as inherently ideological, shifting and changing in line with broader political, economic and social considerations.

Abstract:
The polymeric composite materials are in high demand by industries where light and strong materials are required. Although manmade fiber (e.g. glass, carbon, aramid fibers) are most often used to reinforce polymers, natural fibers due to their environmental friendliness and sustainability have been also considered. Natural fiber composites have shown to have great potential as a substitute for conventional glass fiber materials. However, bio-based composites exhibit highly non-linear behavior, besides they are very sensitive to elevated moisture and temperature. Therefore, careful design and optimization of composite properties defined by constituents, composition and internal structure is needed to meet requirements of real-life applications. This can be done by using accurate models that can take into account factors responsible for inelastic behavior of these materials. The initial part of this thesis is dealing with development of phenomenological approach to predict inelastic behavior of composites in tension. Viscoelasticity and viscoplasticity was analyzed in short term creep tests and modulus degradation in stiffness degradation tests. Schapery’s model for viscoelasticity and Zapa’s model for viscoplasticity was used to characterize nonlinearity. This method was then validated on short, randomly oriented fiber composites with different cellulosic fibers (flax, viscose) and bio-polymers (PLA, Lignin). The elastic modulus, tensile stress-strain curves and failure were analyzed at different humidity and temperature levels. Results showed high sensitivity to moisture and temperature and highly non-linear behavior of these materials. Modeling showed good agreement between experimental data and simulations.Since there is need for simulations of strain controlled tests, this model was rewritten in inverted incremental form. Simulations of stress-strain curves showed, that predictions are more accurate, when characterization of viscoelastic and viscoplastic parameters was done at stresses close to failure. However, due to creep rapture it was not always possible to characterize material at high stresses and in this case viscoelastic functions have to be extrapolated. The stress-strain curves can be then used to further adjust extrapolation of model parameters. The model developed in the first part of the thesis proved to be capable of predicting behavior of short fiber composites with good accuracy. However, in order to carry out simulations input parameters have to be experimentally obtained and it has to be done for every composite that is studied. The second part of this thesis is dedicated to development of constitutive model which uses parameters of constituents to predict behavior of material with any composition. This model then is applied on semi-structural natural fiber composites consisting of bio-based resins reinforced with continuous cellulosic fibers. Mechanical properties of different bio-based thermoset resins and regenerated cellulose fibers have been analyzed. Results showed comparable properties of bio-based and synthetic epoxy resins, even at elevated humidity levels, but high scattering of properties from sample to sample. They also showed that bio-based resin exhibit limited non-linearity whereas regenerated cellulose fiber is highly non-linear.In order to avoid large scatter typical for bio-based materials and improve accuracy of the model, methodology for parameter identification for viscoplastic model with use of only one sample has been suggested. The objective here is to simulate strain controlled tests and the most convenient way to do it is with Schapery’s strain formulation model. The parameters for such model can be obtained from relaxation tests, where viscoelastic strain is kept constant but due to presence of viscoplastic strain component such experiments are difficult to perform. Instead, constituents exhibiting viscoplastic behavior have been characterized in creep and viscoelastic parameters for Schapery’s strain formulation are obtained from simulations of relaxation tests with inverted incremental model. Then these parameters are used to simulate behavior of composite subjected to iso-strain conditions.

Abstract:
This thesis presents evidence of an extended period of research which has both a practical and a written outcome. Being primarily practice-based research, its principal outcome is the production and exhibition of three new video installations featuring the use of digital imaging techniques in their production, combined with the utilisation of sculptural display structures in their presentation and exhibition. The three works under consideration are Mind's Eye (exhibited July-Aug. 1997); Mothlight (exhibited April 1998, April 1999 and May 1999); and Merging/Emerging (exhibited June-July 1999). The thesis contains an extended discussion of the concepts and concerns behind these works, as well as an analysis of the interrelationships between them and my previous video installation work produced in the period between 1990 and 1995. (The appendix to this thesis contains the original proposals for these three new works, as well as a CD Rom with documentation of the exhibited works.) The other main component of this research is an exploration and discussion of the influence of significant changes in video imaging techniques on the development of video art in the United States and the United Kingdom. in the period between 1960 and 1990. This evolving relationship between video technology and video art is explored predominantly through an examination of art works and statements made by particular video artists who's work is relevant to my concerns, but also includes observations and statements by critics, writers and curators who are concerned with the development of the medium within a fine art context. Section One examines and discusses the historical and cultural context, tracing the evolution of video as an art form in relation to significant developments in the technology, including its origins, discussing in some detail the emergence of the genre in its early formative period, with particular attention to the contributions of individual artists. There is a significant section which discusses the work of artists who have experimented with and built special video imaging tools in both the US and the UK. Section Two examines specific works by artists operating in the United States and the United Kingdom under four main headings, acknowledging the impact of the most significant technological developments identified in the first section. Specific video art works are discussed under the following categories: 'Non-broadcast' video, frame- accurate editing, electronic image manipulation techniques and video display equipment for installation. section Three traces the development of my own fine art practice in video during the period between 1978 and 1995, examining the influence of video technology on the work and discussing issues related to the accessibility of image production facilities, as well as the impact of this technology on the development of formal innovation and its interrelationship to content. This section also discusses and examines the influence of artists working in related areas such as experimental film and music, with a special emphasis on the influence of the avant-garde film movement of the 1970's. This section is to a certain extent cross-referenced with the previous section, as many of the artists and works cited were important to the evolution of my own fine art practice. The final section examines in detail the ideas, concepts and development of the three new video installations that form the core of this research: Mind's Eye (1997), Mothlight (1998-99) and MerginglEmerging (1999). Each installation is described in detail and discussed in relation to its ideas and themes, as well as with reference to the technical processes employed and the formal concerns of the work. This section also includes a discussion of issues in relation to notions of site-specificity.

Abstract:
Biology can achieve phenomenal information storage/processing capabilities from just four hydrogen bonding molecules. The orthogonal self-sorting of these four hydrogen bonding motifs is achieved alongside the hydrophobic collapse of the DNA backbone. Orthogonal self-sorting without the aid of a polymer backbone is dicult to achieve, as shown by the minimal examples of self-sorting hydrogen bonding motifs available in the literature. This thesis describes the design, synthesis and binding studies of molecules that are capable of orthogonal self-sorting, without a preorganising backbone and begins to use them in a signalling cascade. In Chapter 2 ureidoimidazole, a conformer independent triple hydrogen-bond array, is introduced. Studies were carried out to investigate what effect, if any, preorganisation using intramolecular hydrogen bonding had on the binding affnity of triply hydrogen bonded complexes. Chapter 3 investigates another factor that can effect the binding affnity of complexes, the remote substituent effect. Two series of complementary molecules were synthesised so that they contained a variety of electron donating/withdrawing groups and the effect that these had on the binding affnity of the complex was measured. Chapter 4 describes a novel quadruple hydrogen-bond array, which was designed to interact strongly with its complementary partner. It was found that a combination of effects (differences in geometry and undesired conformers being favoured) lead to a low binding affnity being observed. Chapter 5 begins to investigate non-linear arrays, however none of those proposed were able to form heterodimers. Therefore a self-sorting system was assembled using a triple and quadruple hydrogen-bonded array. High fidelity interactions were achieved, even though it was possible to form undesired complexes. These undesired molecular interactions were exploited in Chapter 5, where a signalling cascade is described. Careful planning of the order in which to add the molecules can give different routes in which to achieve the self-sorting system, each with it's own fidelity trace. A photolabile tag was introduced to one of the molecules so that a photosensitive system could be achieved.

Abstract:
This thesis explores the envisioning of India through two different but related exhibitionary forms: it examines the record of South Asian experiences of the Crystal Palace at Sydenham, the Colonial and Indian Exhibition of 1886 and the organisation of exhibitions hosted by the Indian National Congress in the subcontinent between 1901 and 1905. Through a detailed analysis of a range of related primary sources, including contemporary South Asian travel narratives, Indian National Congress proceedings, and local publications such as the Times of India and Indian Textile Journal, this thesis investigates the ways in which South Asians, specifically those who could be considered urban elites, constructed the modern Indian nation in relation to their visiting and organising of these exhibitions. Deploying the critical frameworks of the study of the history and theory of Great Exhibitions, which, in turn, are informed by postcolonial theories, the thesis reveals the ways in which South Asians disseminated the idea of modernity but also, importantly, the ways in which they negotiated, complicated and, in part, made these imperially inflected ideals their own.

Mansfield, Laura. "The island as a model for the interpretation and development of exhibitions of contemporary art beyond a gallery setting." Thesis, Manchester Metropolitan University, 2016. http://e-space.mmu.ac.uk/615951/.

Full text
Abstract:
The written thesis is presented in conjunction with a documented body of curatorial practice that together seek to examine and develop a proposed notion of ‘the island’ as a conceptual model for the staging and analysis of exhibitions of art beyond a gallery setting. The initial conception of ‘the island’ as model follows from a discussion of the function of the setting of islands in literature that identifies and abstracts their unique spatial and structural properties before reapplying them in a different context. On both a practical and discursive level, the ensuing research arrives at a thesis that puts forward the island model as an innovative and productive tool for contemporary curatorial practice. The initial research presents the literary island as a contained site where subversive, fantastical or critical alternatives to a dominant norm are enacted. Appearing unexpectedly through the event of storm, shipwreck or loss at sea, the literary island interrupts the intended trajectory of the castaway who finds himself severed from the customs and routines associated with a homeland. In doing so, the setting of the island in literature often comes to figure as a test-site for new possibilities upon which a blurring between the real and the imaginary readily occurs. Retaining the identified properties of the literary island but divorcing it from its geographical setting, the proposed notion of the island as curatorial model conceives a space located within, yet always at the slightest remove from, the everyday itself – disrupting the familiar to facilitate a playful or subversive alternative to the status quo. Here, the structural effect of the island no longer depends on its physical distance to a ‘mainland’, but describes a spatial practice that facilitates a process of distancing from familiar norms. Occurring outside of the confines of a gallery, the presented curatorial practice stages artworks that are physically situated within a given location whilst simultaneously providing an experience of the virtual possibilities for its transformation. In so doing, the thesis argues, these and similar artworks invite a re-imagination of familiar and everyday culture by blurring the distinction between the real and the imaginary in a manner that reflects - and can thus be productively modelled upon - the function of the literary island. In proposing an alternative strategy for the discussion and development of curatorial practices beyond the gallery, as well as putting into play a new mode of analysis and an innovative space of discourse, the thesis presents an original framework for contemporary curatorial practice.

The goal of this research was to develop structurally diverse polyazine-bridged Ru(II),Pt(II) trimetallic and tetrametallic supramolecular complexes and study the impact of component variation on the redox, spectroscopic, and excited state properties that influence photoinduced charged separation and multielectron reduction.  These complexes are active photocatalysts for H2O reduction to H2.  Tetrametallic complexes with the supramolecular architecture [{(TL)2Ru(dpp)}2Ru(BL")PtCl2]6+ (Ru3Pt; TL = phen = 1,10-phenanthroline or Ph2phen = 4,7-diphenyl-1,10-phenanthroline; BL" = dpp = 2,3-bis(2-pyridyl)pyrazine or dpq = 2,3-bis(2-pyridyl)quinoxaline) feature a trimetallic dpp-bridged Ru(II) light absorber coupled to a cis-PtCl2 reactive metal center.  Trimetallic complexes with one less Ru-based light absorbing unit, [{(Ph2phen)2Ru(dpp)Ru(bpy)(BL")PtCl2]4+ (Ru2Pt; BL" = dpp or dpq), represent  a new supramolecular architecture that was designed and synthesized to provide less complex systems for excited state analysis.  Both the Ru3Pt and Ru2Pt systems have a remote Ru center separated from the reactive Pt site designed to provide extended 3MLCT lifetimes relative to directly coupled [(TL)2Ru(BL)PtCl2]2+ systems. The building block synthetic method used in constructing supramolecules provides the ability to purify and analyze the properties following each synthetic step, allowing sub-unit variation and structural diversity.  Building a knowledge base about the properties of smaller, less complicated structures is critical in understanding the electrochemistry, spectroscopy, and excited state dynamics of multi-metallic, multi-ligand complexes.  Electrochemical analysis of the [{(TL)2Ru(dpp)}2Ru(BL")PtCl2]6+ complexes suggests a HOMO localized on the terminal Ru centers (E1/2 (RuII/III) = 1.56-1.63 V vs. Ag/AgCl) and a LUMO localized on the remote BL" coordinated to the reactive Pt site, with the energy dictated by the BL" identity (E1/2 = "0.32 or "0.33 V for BL" = dpp or E1/2 = "0.02 or "0.05 V for BL" = dpq).  This provides spatially separated HOMOs and LUMOs which predict lowest-lying charge separated states.  The complexes are robust UV and visible light absorbers due to multiple broad, overlapping ligand centered and metal-to-ligand charge transfer (MLCT) transitions.  The lowest energy 1MLCT absorption is centered around 540-550 nm for the four tetrametallic complexes with high molar absorptivity (31,000-42,000 M"1cm"1).  BL" variation has only a small impact on the electronic absorption spectroscopy, while the TL variation greatly enhances the absorptivity between 350 nm and 500 nm from 29,000 to 42,000 M"1cm"1 for complexes with TL = phen and Ph2phen, respectively.    The tetrametallic [{(TL)2Ru(dpp)}2Ru(BL")PtCl2]6+ complexes exhibit unusual excited state dynamics as well as spatially separated HOMOs and LUMOs. The lowest lying optically populated state is a terminal Ru\'¼-dpp MLCT in all the Ru3Pt and Ru2Pt systems reported herein.  The terminal Ru(dÀ) based HOMO and BL"(À*) based LUMO suggests a lower lying terminal Ru\'BL" CS state in all systems.  Because the lowest lying terminal Ru(dÀ)\'BL"(À*) 3CS (charge separated) state is optically inaccessible, indirect population occurs.  The tetrametallic [{(TL)2Ru(dpp)}2Ru(BL")PtCl2]6+ complexes have similar excited state lifetimes (Ä) of 75-83 ns, and they exhibit quantum yields of emission  ("em) of 7.1 x 10"4 (when BL" = dpp) and 3.2-3.7 x 10"4 (when BL" = dpq).  The lifetimes are shortened and the emission quantum yields are quenched in comparison to the [{(TL)2Ru(dpp)}2Ru(BL")]6+ models which possess the same emissive terminal Ru\'¼-dpp 3MLCT state with Ä = 110 ns and "em = 1.0-1.1 x 10"3.   In marked contrast to the large number of Ru polyazine systems studied, both monometallic and supramolecular complexes, the lowest lying 3MLCT state of the Ru3Pt complexes is not populated with unit efficiency due to 3CS state population from the emissive terminal Ru(dÀ)\'dpp(À*) 3CT state and a higher energy 3MLCT state, likely the central Ru(dÀ)\'BL"(À*) 3CT state.  The degree of population of this state is strongly dependent on the LUMO energy or driving force for population.  Stabilization of the BL" = dpq(À*) compared to higher energy dpp(À*) provides a larger driving force for intramolecular electron transfer to populate the 3CS state, resulting in ca. 40 % and 95 % population of the emissive state when BL" = dpq and dpp, respectively.  This suggests ca. 60 % and 5 % indirect population of the non-emissive 3CS state via a higher-lying 3MLCT state and the terminal Ru\'dpp 3MLCT emissive state when BL" = dpq and dpp, respectively.  These complexes violate Kasha\'s rule, an unusual occurrence for Ru(II) polyazine complexes, as the emissive state is not populated with unit efficiency.  Instead, the degree of population of the emissive state is dependent on the excitation wavelength. The Ru3Pt complexes are active photocatalysts for H2O reduction to H2.  In the presence of light and the sacrificial electron donor, DMA (N,N-dimethylaniline), the tetrametallic complexes collect electrons on the ligand À* orbitals of the central Ru to serve as photoinitiated electron collectors.  The photocatalytic activity in H2 production is drastically impacted by BL" identity, consistent with the enhanced driving force for charge separation to move electrons toward the cis-PtCl2 moiety.  After photolysis for 10 h, 15 ± 1 ¼mol (66 ± 4 TON) and 4 ± 1 ¼mol (18 ± 1 TON) of H2 were produced using [{(phen)2Ru(dpp)}2Ru(dpq)PtCl2]6+ and [{(phen)2Ru(dpp)}2Ru(dpp)PtCl2]6+, respectively.  Varying TL to Ph2phen serves to enhance light absorptivity and subsequently increase H2 production to 21 ± 1 ¼mol (94 ± 6 TON) and 5 ± 1 ¼mol (23 ± 2 TON) using [{(Ph2phen)2Ru(dpp)}2Ru(dpq)PtCl2]6+ and [{(Ph2phen)2Ru(dpp)}2Ru(dpp)PtCl2]6+, respectively.  The identity of BL" greatly influences the ability to direct the flow of charge through the supramolecular architecture impacting photocatalysis, while the identity of TL serves to fine tune the light absorbing and excited state properties. Due to the complicated excited state properties imparted by the large number of MLCT transitions in the [{(TL)2Ru(dpp)}2Ru(BL")PtCl2]6+ complexes, the analogous [(Ph2phen)2Ru(dpp)Ru(bpy)(BL")PtCl2]4+ complexes were designed and a synthetic scheme developed.  The trimetallics possess similar electronic absorption spectroscopy with fewer terminal metal-based transitions due to removal of one (TL)2RuII(dpp) sub-unit and allow for distinguishable spectroscopic shifts resulting from perturbation of specific sub-units and the related molecular orbitals.  The trimetallic complexes exhibit similar redox properties with the HOMO localized on the terminal Ru and the LUMO localized on the remote BL", providing a low lying 3CS state.  Similar degrees of emission quenching are observed with the trimetallic complexes and their [(Ph2phen)2Ru(dpp)Ru(bpy)(BL")]4+ models as was observed in the tetrametallic complexes.  The values of Ä and "em measured for [(Ph2phen)2Ru(dpp)Ru(bpy)(dpp)PtCl2]4+ were 90 ns and 1.1 x 10"3, respectively, and these values were 100 ns and 5.2 x 10"4 for [(Ph2phen)2Ru(dpp)Ru(bpy)(dpq)PtCl2]4+.  Similar to the Ru3Pt systems, the lifetimes are shortened and the emission is quenched compared to the [(Ph2phen)2"Ru(dpp)Ru(bpy)(BL")]4+ models (Ä = 120 ns and "em = 1.50 x 10"3, regardless of BL" identity).  These values provide ca. 98 % and 45 % population of the emissive state in the Ru2Pt systems for BL" = dpp and dpq, respectively, suggesting ca. 2 % and 55 % population of the non-emissive 3CS state for BL" = dpp and dpq, respectively.  This supports the use of this new Ru2Pt motif as models to study the excited state dynamics.  A substantial difference was observed between the excitation and absorption spectra for [(Ph2phen)2Ru(dpp)Ru(bpy)(dpq)PtCl2]4+, consistent with non-unity population of the emissive 3MLCT excited state. The simplified electronic absorption spectroscopy allowed the use of nanosecond transient absorption (TA) spectroscopy to analyze the excited state, and strong evidence of violation of Kasha\'s rule through partial population of the terminal Ru(À)\'BL"(À*) 3CS state (Ä = 25 ns)  in addition to the emissive terminal Ru(dÀ)\'dpp(À*) 3MLCT state (Ä = 120 ns) was observed through excitation-based emission spectroscopy and time-resolved TA spectroscopy. The synthesis, electrochemistry, electronic absorption spectroscopy, and steady-state and time-resolved emission spectroscopy for the [2Ru(BL")PtCl2]6+ and [(Ph2phen)2Ru(dpp)Ru(bpy)(BL")PtCl2]4+ complexes as well as photocatalytic H2 production with [2Ru(BL")PtCl2]6+ and transient absorption spectroscopy of [(Ph2phen)2Ru(dpp)Ru(bpy)(BL")PtCl2]4+, are reported herein.  The work discussed within this dissertation provides in depth knowledge about the effects of component modification on the excited state dynamics and photocatalytic activity of structurally diverse Ru3Pt and Ru2Pt supramolecular complexes that is important in developing photochemical molecular devices.  Unusual excited state dynamics make it clear that much remains to be uncovered about structure-property relationship in these complex mixed-metal, mixed-ligand supramolecular motifs.  These supramolecular motifs also have applications in photodynamic therapy drug development and are currently under investigation by members of the Brewer research group.

The successful launching of an exhibition, the sound management of a team, the meticulousness of artifact conservation, and the specifics of design aesthetics share an inseparable relationship. This thesis uses the National Palace Museum’s 80th anniversary annual special exhibition “Grand View—Northern Sung Painting and Calligraphy, Ju Ware from the Northern Sung Dynasty, and Sung Dynasty Rare Books,” which was unveiled after the Museum’s reopening, as a case study. Through literature reviews, it attempts to give a comprehensive evaluation of how the NPM, after its reconstruction, emphasizes functionality in the planning of exhibition space and its approach to developing a special exhibition. An analysis of the development process of the “Grand View” exhibit was also made. In addition, it uses feedback from visitors and tour guides to inspect the NPM’s concepts in exhibition development. It further proposes suggestions to alleviate the discrepancy of feelings about the exhibition between the exhibition organizer and Museum visitors. According to literature reviews and case studies, the development team’s main focus is on guaranteeing the safety of artifacts and the exhibition’s academic presentation when planning an exhibition. However, the suggestion forms and questionnaires filled out by visitors and the comments of tour guides show that their main concern is the ambiguity of the tour route and the density of the artifacts, resulting in problems such as congestions and the difficulty of maintaining order within the exhibition space. These findings show that during the planning of an exhibition, the development team did not have a full grasp of the needs of the audience. Therefore, the research seeks to find ways to improve the NPM’s traditional exhibition development team, and to conduct planning and discussions based on the needs of the audience. This study reached the following conclusions: 1. The museum must make a concrete analysis of the specific types of exhibition. Then, with the use of various exhibition modules of different arrangements of the exhibition area, the museum may ease the problem of space distribution and navigation path confusion. 2. The museum must first have a comprehensive understanding of the visitors’ needs and strengthen the professionalism and ability of the team, in order to realize the communication and operation of a team of researchers, educators, and designers. 3. The museum should regularly provide training related to exhibition planning within the museum.

The stories of “yaya” and “Courier” were inspired and adapted from my personal life experiences. The script of “yaya” was written in memory of the two stray dogs, “Pipi” and “Little White”, who had accompanied me for 19 years. The story was full of my missing, my fantasies and my eagerness about them. “Courier” was inspired from the anecdotes piled with life experiences of inconvenience brought by those “too humanized” 3C electronic products that I am very fond of. “yaya” and “Courier” were awarded 800,000 NTD and 50,000 NTD from the “Short Film Fund by Government Information Office” and “Life Story of Public Television 2010”respectively for filmmaking. “yaya” was a low-paced and low-profiled story, talking about the family bond between the mother and son and their dog, while “Courier” was comparatively a high-paced black-humor comedy. The styles and the performing ways of the scripts were quite out of standard. In them exists absurdity and non-realism. Through the two different platforms and systems of “Short Film Fund by Government Information Office” and “Life Story of Public Television”, a further discussion of creation on the processes of creation was given based on the processes of the script creations, the development of subject matter and the plan writing.

With the continuous development of computer core technology, the virtual environment in the computer presents almost the phenomenon and state of the real world. Let people immersed in the virtual environment cannot tell the difference between virtual and reality, due to the rapid growth of graphics and computer processing technology in recent years, virtual reality technology development thresholds and equipment costs have decreased significantly, and more and more people apply the presentation of virtual environment in exhibition, education, training, troubleshooting and maintenance. In response to the needs of small-volume/large-variation of products nowadays, the processing applications have a lot of customization requirements. The mechanical equipment manufacturers and the processing application engineers usually need to spend a lot of times in the communications and repeated changes to determine which equipment is the most suitable for customers. There are many factors need to be considered. For the equipment manufacturers, how to demonstrate the characteristics of the device and to satisfy the needs of the customers is an important factor in determining the customer's motivation to buy. So far, a variety of international machine tool exhibition, machinery and equipment manufacturers will show in the exhibition their equipment characteristics and advantages, but are limited by the space of the site and the booth. Therefore, the machine tools that can be moved to the exhibition hall are limited. So the equipment manufacturers will be subjected to this limitation when negotiating with their potential customers. Another limitation is the cost of the transportation and it is difficult to ensure the accuracy of the machine tools during transportation. Therefore, this paper aims for enhancing the communication between customers and machine tool makers through the development of a visual presentation platform with case study to ease realization. Exhibitors and Salesman can make a strong first impression with customers, and convert the 2D catalogue to interactive 3D experience. Using virtual reality technology on the demonstration could avoid the transportation of heavy machine tool to the exhibition for reducing the cost. In the maintenance part, most equipment maintenance methods are electronically or paper-based manuals, and even for maintenance personnel, in addition to being able to interpret equipment maintenance methods literally, they also provide recordings of maintenance videos for teaching. However, when maintenance personnel conduct electronic or paper-based maintenance data review, they need to follow the actual cause of the malfunction of the device, browse through the books page by page to find a solution to the problem. But the traditional maintenance information is only a text description, there are not many matching photo views. So for the first time repairing the equipment will increase the rework time of the equipment. If the maintenance information is presented as a video, although the maintenance steps can be shown more clearly through video, sound and text, most of the films are in continuous projection. For the maintenance personnel point of view, may not be able to view the focus of maintenance, and if the quality of the recording is poor, there may be a blurry zone during maintenance inspection of the video, resulting in an increase in maintenance errors and time. This paper provides a visual virtual reality maintenance system through the development of visual presentation platform for machine tool maintenance. When an abnormal state is detected, the maintenance personnel can view the location where the abnormality occurs via the virtual environment. And troubleshooting via stepwise manner taught teaching, and indeed achieve in-time troubleshooting purposes.

During the post-war period from 1945 to 1980, most of the time, traditional public spaces such as auditoriums and gyms left from the Japanese Rules were used as exhibition spaces in Tainan City. Most of these spaces served multiple purposes and were used as venues for promoting government policies and institutional fine arts. In 1981, the first commercial galleries opened in Tainan. From then on until 2015, non-commercial alternative exhibition spaces as well as exhibition spaces serving different purposes managed by government units gradually emerged, influenced by the changes and conditions of the time. In addition, the construction of Tainan’s first and highly-anticipated public museum of arts is expected to be complete in 2018. Within these seven decades, Taiwanese society has gone through the Retrocession of Taiwan, and undergone drastic social changes caused by the imposition and lifting of martial laws. The resulting economic boom reshaped the habits of Taiwanese people in the purchasing and appreciation of artworks, with an increasing proportion of the younger generation committing themselves to the arts industry as trendsetters. However, problems such as professionalism during the holding of arts exhibitions and sustainability began to appear as more museums were built. Nowadays, as the skyline of cities continues to change at a blistering pace, the evolution of arts activities has made arts and cultural development important indicators for assessing city improvements. While documenting and diving deep into the past, we are also confronted with the idea of whether these efforts would sabotage a city’s cultural significance. The development of exhibition spaces is a continuing and ceaseless process. Its evolution is driven by how humans treat and view society, and is permanently influenced by this sort of interactivity. Regardless of whether taking the form of space or being presented through intrinsic attributes, exhibition spaces serve to document struggles for recognition and livelihood, establishments of cultural connections as a response to social requirements, and the various ways of demonstrating engagement with society by artists, business owners, or units and groups involved in the launching or operation of an exhibition space.

Energy consumption in buildings sector is an important issue about energy. In the US, buildings already consume almost 70% of total electricity generated. Heating, Ventilating & Air Conditioning (HVAC) is the biggest energy consumer in building beside lighting. This study proposed development a data analysis framework to support energy management in exhibition spaces. The proposed experimental framework is using descriptive analysis, data classification using classification and regression trees (CART), and outlier detection method using generalized extreme studentized deviate (GESD). A case study was conducted in National Taiwan Science Education Center by collecting air conditioning energy consumption and developing asset management strategy. The main finding show that the air conditioning energy consumption sometimes consume more energy just right before and after the opening and closing of the museum.

This paper discusses in recent years, the Chinese government and the local institutions all regard exhibition industry as Sunrise Industry. Apart from aggressively investing in plenty of capital to reinforce the construction, they also establish the training institutions for talents of exhibitions and cultivate the professionals. In the following years, Mainland China successfully applies for hosting 2008 Beijing Olympic Games and 2010 World Exposition. These activities are closely related to Chinese exhibition industry. However, when reviewing the development of exhibition industry in Taiwan, one would find out that originally, Taiwan has been ahead of Mainland China in terms of experience; however, since the end of the 80s, Taiwan faced the severe changes of local and foreign economy and the environment of industry as well as the outward moving of labor-intense industry which led to the exhibition industry in Mainland China is progressive, but in Taiwan is held up. So how to adopt a suitable counterplot which is very important for Taiwan now. Facing the gradually growing competitor across the strait, our government and the companies of exhibition industry should aggressively understand the advantages, disadvantages, competition and threats of exhibition industry of our country and Mainland China. Besides, the government should establish the overall competitive strategies in order to further enhance the interaction of exhibitions across the strait as a promoter and lead to the shared prosperity of the exhibition industry across the strait in the future in order to result in the success of Taiwanese exhibition industry. Thus, this research not only introduced the definition, classification, scale, characteristics of exhibition industry, general situations of development of international exhibition industry, general situations of exhibition industry of Taiwan and Mainland China, but also explored the development of exhibition industry of Mainland China and its effect upon that of Taiwan. This thesis used Porter’s Diamond Theory and secondary data of qualitative research and regarded in-depth interview and participation and observation as the main methods to collect the data. Besides, the research invited four experts of exhibition across the strait to proceed with in-depth interview and transformed the interview into writing with further coding as the critical subject and core concept. With the progress of technology, the application of network techniques is getting popular-either learning, working, entertainment, or communication, all can be realized on the network. In the field of design, the use of internet for exhibition of design works is inevitably becoming a new trend, a new method for expanding the design field. The features of hypermedia in the world wide web can not only make up the drawbacks found in the conventional exhibitions, but also bring the characteristics of multimedia integration into full play, achieving the purpose of attracting people to the exhibition. Facing this impact, how is the design profession going to utilize the properties of the new media, and to show design works in such new area of creation is the main subject of this research. This study analyzes firstly the principles and patterns of conventional exhibitions, and then the current situations of the web and multimedia techniques. The principles and properties of these two areas are then integrated and a system for web exhibition of design works is then built along with a real example. At the same time, the types of web exhibition of design works, the design principles of webpage exhibitions, and the methods and guidelines for webpage construction are investigated with the professional viewpoint of design, so as to smoothly introduce the disign field into the area of web exhibition. The major conclusions of this research include: 1) It provides a new mode of exhibition system on the world wide web; 2) The interface design with a multilevel structure is better than that of a conventional structure; 3) By means of observing the user operation behaviors on the web, much information can be pathered, such as user''s navigation path, the frequencies and time durations of webpage operation in the system.

On April 14, 2014 Kaohsiung Exhibition Center (KEC) had its grand opening, but KEC is not the last exhibition center being built. According to what we know, government agencies and local governments have new plans undergoing for exhibition halls, such as the Taipei World Trade Center Nangang Exhibition Hall II & III ; Taichung City Government’s plans on building “Taichung Watergate Ecological Park” and “Taichung Convention & Exhibition Center”. Tainan City Government will build Tainan Exhibition Center near the Taiwan High Speed Rail station, and Taoyuan County plans to build the Conference and Exhibition Center in Taoyuan aviation city near the MRT Airport line A15 and industrial zone, and so on. It's surprising how many convention and exhibition halls will be built in next the two or three years. This research is based on the diffusion of innovation theory and qualitative research to interview scholars and experts. What their opinions support Taiwan does need lots of Exhibition Center. With new exhibition centers built in cities, I believe it will further strengthen City Competitiveness. Do MICE Industry and City Competitiveness influence each other or will one play a more important role? This is the focus of my research: to identify which is the priority.

Craft originates from the production and usage of various tools for daily livelihood, where their basic function is to adequately and efficiently facilitate the comfort of living, so that work becomes convenient and logical. Therefore, once craft becomes the subject of exhibition, it is a declaration of transformation in terms of usage significance and relationship with people. The planning of the Taiwanese craft exhibition is fundamentally based on the structure of the knowledge classification in the museum and is inspired by the theme of conveying rational/scientific knowledge within the realm of craft. It starts by labeling information on the craft exhibits to gradually creating the topic and integrating the exhibits with visual design and spatial ambiance, supplemented by multimedia and interactive devices; hence the stationery craft exhibition is transformed into a dynamic experience. Although a diverse exhibition design and multimedia application may provide the audience with more sensual stimuli and experience, however, the cultural connotation presented for craft may potentially be the output of unilateral communication. The study focuses on the policy development of the NTCRI’s actual craft exhibitions during 2002~2010 as the research content. Through such a national iconic institution, its task migration in researching and promoting craft is used to analyze Taiwanese craft’s lateral connection in three major facets such as livelihood economics, government policy and cultural development, as well its historical connotations. The transition from craft display exhibition method to theme design and then to exhibition thinking is clarified, further analyzing the current implementation technique and condition of craft exhibitions. It is hoped to examine the concept, and the pros and cons of the current exhibition system, so as to propose adjustments in response to the changes in time and compile issues worth reviewing in contemporary craft creation and exhibition interpretation, ultimately provide exhibition organizers and the audience with more diverse clues when contemplating the subject of viewing exhibitions.

This research discusses the conservation of the Architectural Drawing ‘’Makung’s City Development Plan’’ in 1955, with the influence by using LED light. This map was made by dye, which were kind of printing technology called diazotype. The cultural property recorded the urban plaining in Makung in 1955 during Taiwan’s restoration. The total area of this object is 137cm in height and 140.5cm in width, it was fold up to store before treatment, forming serious break on paper support, with other degradation problems such as Taps in urgent to remove. The conservation process in’’ Makung’s City Development Plan’’ mainly included surface clean, tape removal, flattering, mending, compensation, and inpainting. In addition to conservation treatment, this study describe the history about Taiwan ‘s restoration in 1955, after WWII the Government of the Republic of China published Economic Development in Taiwan, the paining of Makung city continuation of Japanese colonial period, the map has an extraordinary significance to linked the history of Makung city's development. According to the applicability of display the article, the LED light fastness testing carried out under the premise of conservation. LED lamps has a reputation of green lighting, which with merits, such as UV free, energy saving and long life. It is a great advantage to display light sensitive materials like diazotype by using LED light because of the characteristic of UV free. However, to display articles there are so many factors must be considered. Using LED light source still many controversial for the deficiencies of Color Rendering and for high radiation flux. It is necessary to profundity study on this subject. The LED light fastness testing was using two kinds of MR-16 LED lamps: CRI 74 and CRI 90, the sample was made by diazotype. The results showed that at the same temperature and humidity, both of CRI 74 and CRI 90 light sources impact the color alteration of sample, the color change on CRI 90 is much more gently and clearly on CRI 74. Obviously, there is doubt to using LED light source on display daizotype. Keywords: Makung’s City Development Plan, Penghu Makung, Conservation, Diazotype, LED lamp, Color Rendering Index

The impacts of global industrialization and commercialization lead to increasing international trade and investment. As the same time, expanding the scope of the transnational communication also has the strong effect on local and global economic development. The convention and exhibition will be able to expand the international market and then promote the national economic development. It can be found that the research has been discussed from the perspective of location selection to the clusters. It is believed that the cluster as an industry gathering in specific areas can be used as an explanation of interregional interaction and knowledge innovation. European researches regard the concept of international trade show as the theory of temporay clusters. The study also found that temporary clusters from the convention and exhibition can promote industrial innovation and enhance industrial development through the global pipelines. Using participant observation as a data collection method, this research is actually involved in 2017 Taiwan International Orchid. In recent years, due to the impact of globalization, automated production, rapid development of technology, Orchid industry faced the pressure of international competition. In conclusion, the research emphasizes that temporay clusters not only solves the closure property of industrial clusters but also enhances the visibility of local industries. Taiwan's government-run Taiwan art Exhibition with Modernization opening. Toyo painting optimized by Japanese education and Taiwan Art Exhibition, performs a unique painting style during the modernistic Art Movement in Taiwan. Although Toyo painting seem left the mainstream of Taiwan art, the glory and achievement experienced is the important part from Taiwan Art Modernization. Issues from Japanese colonial period "Regional Flavor" caused the creative boom, continuing to become as predecessor of "Local Flavor "."Portrait of Beauty with Regional Flavor" developed from the miscellaneous cultural to other style of "Regional Flavor". I review and analyze the overall style development of "Portrait of Beauty with Regional Flavor" selected from the official Exhibition in Taiwan, further to make in-depth analysis with the award-winning work. Further comparison with “Portrait of Beauty with Regional Flavor” that painter created by long-term efforts and various types of work styles developed during Art Exhibition. In the end, I probe into the development and style form passed through the understandings of social environment in Taiwan, the educated environment how Taiwanese painters learn Toyo painting and the background of the official examiner. This paper attempts to point out that the conversions of characteristic and style of “Portrait of Beauty with Regional Flavor” and changes on society become close relationship relatively. Based on this transformation, new forms expressed will be born accordingly and it means the “Portrait of Beauty” represented by Taiwan's colonialist developing with various "Regional Flavor" on this topic.

"Engaging practices : re-thinking narrative exhibition development in light of narrative scholarship : a thesis presented in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of Masters of Arts in Museum Studies at Massey University, Palmerston North, New Zealand." 2009. http://hdl.handle.net/10179/1082.

Abstract:
This thesis bridges narrative theory and the practice of developing narrative exhibitions in museums. It aims to show how an understanding of narrative theory provides a dynamic context for evaluating ongoing exhibition practices and adapting them to changing attitudes and aspirations. For practitioners within the museum sector it introduces a rich body of previously under-utilised scholarship along with a method of interfacing it with museum practice. The idea of deriving ideas for museums from other sectors is not new. Museums increasingly embraced narrative in the 1980s after seeing its value in attracting audiences to film, theatre and theme-parks. Then it was assumed that what was relevant in one sector would be equally relevant in another. However, the interim upsurge of Media Studies suggests that rigorous examination of how each medium operates is necessary in order to identify similar constraints and affordances before scholarship from one area of practice can be appropriately applied in another sector. In opening a path for museum practitioners to gain insight from narrative practitioners in other sectors, the thesis intends also to open the way for knowledge to flow from the discipline of museum studies out into other areas of narrative practice, where cross-disciplinary approaches have already gained ground. At the outset, a context is established through a review of narrative literature. Two different approaches are used. Firstly a broad review of different ways to approach narrative is carried out and a typology of narrative is developed. Secondly commonalities are identified between narrative in exhibitions and narrative practice in other media. Exhibition practices are then described in detail, focusing on experience at the Museum of New Zealand Te Papa Tongarewa, where research was enriched by in-depth interviews with exhibition development staff. Te Papa’s development of narrative exhibitions is traced, and two case studies demonstrate how their model is put into practice to achieve narrative delivery within the museum galleries. For museum professionals and narrative practitioners in other fields, this thesis provides an opportunity to examine processes of narrative delivery against a backdrop of theory. It makes a useful link between the museum sector and other areas of narrative practice.

In general, Conventions and Exhibitions industry includes meeting, incentive tourism, convention and exhibition. In recent years, MICE industry has gradually became an important industry in Taiwan. By holding conventions and exhibitions, it not only brings economic effects and upgrade the competitiveness among industries; but also encourages cultural and social innovation. Although Taichung City’s Conventions and Exhibitions industry development policy and infrastructures are much slower than Taipei and Kaohsiung City, after the merge with Taichung City and Taichung County, New Taichung City will become the core city of mid Taiwan. The purpose of this study is to discuss the Conventions and Exhibitions industry develop potentials of Taichung City, the method is interview which is focus on executive units of government leaders, industry leaders and academic professors. The questionnaire survey was used to collect data. The results show that “government efficacy”is the most important dimension, and the factors of Conventions and Exhibitions industry development potentials in turn to “the support policy of Conventions and Exhibitions industry in Taichung City government”, “traffic system of inside Taichung City”, “Traffic system of outside Taichung City”, “Conventions and Exhibitions industry infrastructures’ services ”, “the city image of Taichung City”. Moran, David. "GAYME: The development, design and testing of an auto-ethnographic, documentary game about quarely wandering urban/suburban spaces in Central Florida." Master's thesis, 2014. http://digital.library.ucf.edu/cdm/ref/collection/ETD/id/6141.

Full text
Abstract:
GAYME is a transmedia story-telling world that I have created to conceptually explore the dynamics of queering game design through the development of varying game prototypes. The final iteration of GAYME is @deadquarewalking'. It is a documentary game and a performance art installation that documents a carless, gay/queer/quare man's journey on Halloween to get to and from one of Orlando's most well-known gay clubs - the Parliament House Resort. "The art of cruising" city streets to seek out queer/quare companionship particularly amongst gay, male culture(s) is well-documented in densely, populated cities like New York, San Francisco and London, but not so much in car-centric, urban environments like Orlando that are less oriented towards pedestrians. Cruising has been and continues to be risky even in pedestrian-friendly cities but in Orlando cruising takes on a whole other dimension of danger. In 2011-2012, The Advocate magazine named Orlando one of the gayest cities in America (Breen, 2012). Transportation for America (2011) also named the Orlando metropolitan region the most dangerous city in the country for pedestrians. Living in Orlando without a car can be deadly as well as a significant barrier to connecting with other people, especially queer/quare people, because of Orlando's car-centric design. In Orlando, cars are sexy. At the same time, the increasing prevalence in gay, male culture(s) of geo-social, mobile phone applications using Global Positioning Systems (GPS) and location aware services, such as Grindr (Grindr, LLC., 2009) and even FourSquare (Crowley and Selvadurai, 2009) and Instagram (Systrom and Krieger, 2010), is shifting the way gay/queer/quare Orlandoans co-create social and sexual networks both online and offline. Urban and sub-urban landscapes have transformed into hybrid "techno-scapes" overlaying "the electronic, the emotional and the social with the geographic and the physical" (Hjorth, 2011). With or without a car, gay men can still geo-socially cruise Orlando's car-centric, street life with mobile devices. As such emerging media has become more pervasive, it has created new opportunities to quarely visualize Orlando's "technoscape" through phone photography and hashtag metadata while also blurring lines between the artist and the curator, the player and the game designer. This project particularly has evolved to employ game design as an exhibition tool for the visualization of geo-social photography through hashtag play. Using hashtags as a game mechanic generates metadata that potentially identifies patterns of play and "ways of seeing" across player experiences as they attempt to make meaning of the images they encounter in the game. @deadquarewalking also demonstrates the potential of game design and geo-social, photo-sharing applications to illuminate new ways of documenting and witnessing the urban landscapes that we both collectively and uniquely inhabit. 'In Irish culture, “quare” can mean “very” or “extremely” or it can be a spelling of the rural or Southern pronunciation of the word “queer.” Living in the American Southeast, I personally relate more to the term “quare” versus “queer.” Cultural theorist E. Patrick Johnson (2001) also argues for “quareness” as a way to question the subjective bias of whiteness in queer studies that risks discounting the lived experiences and material realities of people of color. Though I do not identify as a person of color and would be categorized as white or European American, “quareness” has an important critical application for considering how Orlando's urban design is intersectionally racialized, gendered and classed.

Since the government policy favor the development of Taipei, the exhibition industry in Kaohsiung neither has the opportunity to develop nor grow to the scale it deserved. However, Kaohsiung does have some of the characteristics that not only match but surpass Taipei. If these characteristics can be better and fully utilized, the exhibition industry could still flourish in Kaohsiung . This dissertation focuses on some of these characteristics such as geographical location, economical environment, historical background and the integrations between city of Kaohsiung and its surrounding municipalities, as well as utilizing on the interview data from industry experts and scholars, to form the basis for a SWOT analysis. The results of SWOT analysis forms the basis for the understanding of internal strength and weakness, external opportunity and threat in order to discover a new opportunity and further strategic implications for the development of a professional, multi-dimensional and international exhibition industry in Kaohsiung. The five research implications are as followed: 1. The emergence of the global MICE industry in Asia brings numerous benefits to the development of Kaohsiung’s MICE industry. 2. The development should be industry specific, high added value and low carbon emission. 3. The government should play an important role in the development of the MICE industry. 4. The integration of tourism industry with the exhibition industry is the key. 5. Carefully select the organization or the sub-contractors that manage the exhibition.

Cooperation between the National Palace Museum and the famous designing brand Alessi, and the fashion designer Vivienne Westwood’s single products exhibited in an art Museum embody two traditionally unimaginable unconnected parallels to be gradually merged. In contrast to pure artworks displayed in a conventional art Museum such as sculpture, engraving, and painting, more and more aesthetics-based exhibitions which are derived from relevant categories have been observed in recent years, for instance, some works with designs, cultures, fashion, brands, digital techniques, or cross-domain creation integrated for development of both natural but amazing effects via mutually perfect blending and a new style exhibition through the communication of aesthetic essence from distinct fields. In view of art galleries preferring both aesthetic appreciation and the universality between aesthetic power and design to confining exhibitive categories, a new era of art galleries has come when art galleries’ exhibits are displayed with a model matching current design fashion in place of the past obsolete monotonous images. Against this background, we study how art is integrated with design in foreign countries and then Taiwan. First, those foreign individuals’ or groups’ past arguments and concepts breaking and reconciling the boundary between art and design are investigated. Next, we analyze how art galleries arrange current design exhibitions and balance art and design exhibitions by taking existing examples of art galleries and design museums in foreign countries. In the next sections, we explore the relationship between design and art in Taiwan and conclude some previous types with respect to design exhibitions by generally reviewing expositions in the Japanese Colonial Period and embryo design exhibitions after the restoration of Taiwan. With the discussions for design exhibitions in foreign countries and in Taiwan (Japanese Colonial Period and restoration of Taiwan) completed, three important stages in the chronicle of art galleries’ design exhibitions in Taiwan from 1983 when the first design exhibition was held in the art Museum to 2008 are induced. The objects studied here are three representative art galleries such as Taipei Fine Arts Museum, National Taiwan Museum of Fine Arts, and Kaohsiung Museum of Fine Arts distributed in Northern, Central, and Southern Taiwan and the Museum of Contemporary Art Taipei. The topics deeply investigated and analyzed in this study are classification, type, and transition of design exhibitions at these four art galleries. Finally, we make comprehensive cross-over analyses for the procedure of integrating design and art in the history, taking foreign art galleries’ as our references, and the development of design exhibitions in Taiwan’s art galleries, and conclude the trend with respect to evolution of design exhibitions and some recommendations about art galleries’ future development and direction.

The purpose of this study is to research and document the importance of using storytelling as a tool for educating students in the classroom and how its application can also be used in educational exhibitions. An overview of storytelling will describe where storytelling came from, how it can support this type of exhibitions, and how viewers can learn from it. It also describes educational exhibitions and the process exhibition designers follow to create one. The primary purpose of this study is to choose a storytelling technique and exhibition design model that best suits the design of educational exhibitions and create a “Storytelling Model” to be applied in the concept development of an exhibition. Research collected for this study helped to develop a proposal of a new storytelling design model that will serve as a guide for designing exhibitions combining steps of storytelling and exhibition design models. The proposal took as example Ikat textiles to show how the use of the steps used in storytelling could be used as a guide during the first stage of the concept development and how with the help of this structure exhibitions could effectively enhance not only the viewers'' experience but also their learning motivations, comprehension, and learning achievements. The subjects for this study were selected based on their experience in exhibitions and their opinions were discussed and interpreted confirming the potential of storytelling as a technique to use during the concept development of educational exhibitions and arriving to the conclusion that by using this model, the exhibition team can arrive to a better understanding of how to divide the exhibition providing a road map for the team to follow creating a storyline through a story.
