Wheller, Rochelle. "Patient compliance to exercise prescription at the Victoria University osteopathic medicine clinic." Thesis, 2005. https://vuir.vu.edu.au/903/.

Full text
Abstract:
Patient rehabilitation advice (PRA) is commonly used amongst a variety of health care practitioners to aid and enhance the recovery of their patients. Research has demonstrated a positive relationship between the level of adherence to PRA recovery from a variety of musculoskeletal conditions, and has shown non-compliance to home-based exercise programs reduces the probability of successful outcome for therapeutic intervention. No previous research has focused on compliance to prescription and methods of prescription used in the osteopathic medicine setting. As exercise has shown to augment treatment efficacy and speed of recovery, it is important that osteopaths are informed of the current likely adherence rate to PRA and all factors that may cause non-compliance to their exercise prescription. The overall compliance rate to PRA at VUOMC is comparable with previous studies, with the use of diagrams being the least utilised but most effective method of prescription in the VUOMC setting. This study provides a basis for understanding exercise prescription implications that are important both to osteopaths and osteopathic patients in enhancing treatment results in terms of speed and efficacy, as well as potentially reducing treatment costs to both patients and third party payers. This minor thesis was written by a post-graduate student as part of the requirements of the Master of Health Science (Osteopathy) program.

Herman, Nathan. "Compliance to verbal and diagrammatic Patient Rehabilitation Advice (PRA) at the Victoria University Osteopathic Medicine Clinic (VUOMC)." Thesis, 2005. https://vuir.vu.edu.au/824/.

Full text
Abstract:
The prescription of patient rehabilitation advice (PRA) encompassing exercises or stretches prescribed for completion external to a manual therapy consultation time is often condition specific and varies in accordance to a patient's diagnosis in order to produce a more successful outcome over a shorter duration. Previous research has investigated this problem in physiotherapy fields, but as yet has not been undertaken in an osteopathic setting. This study attempted to compare verbal and diagrammatic PRA prescription in the Victoria University Osteopathic Medicine Clinic (VUOMC) to new patients at this clinic. This study demonstrated that diagrammatic PRA prescription was more successful than verbal presricption when used at the VUOMC. The use of the diagrammatic PRA modality should assist the osteopathic practitioner to gain greater compliance and potentially better outcomes for the patient. Kidd, Jeffrey N. "The development and investigation of a systems model of farm tourism in Victoria." Thesis, 2003. https://vuir.vu.edu.au/17940/.

Full text
Abstract:
The marketing of farms for tourism and recreation purposes has been taking place for many years. Farmers have frequently sought to supplement their farm income through providing accommodation and recreation facilities to paying guests. This study concentrates on one state of Australia, Victoria, and has two main aims. The first aim is to develop a systems model of farm tourism that reveals the roles played by various stakeholders. The second aim is to examine farm tourism from a systems perspective, and to explore the attitudes of both farmers and guests to their experiences. In addition, the comments of local government authorities are also investigated. The purpose of the study, in broad terms, is to develop a systems model of farm tourism in Victoria, Australia. In order to do this, the study reviews the literature and then examines the evolution and development of farm tourism in general, through a detailed analysis of the relationships between host farm operators and their visitors. is hoped that the present study will shed some light on an industry which has been largely ignored by most writers and researchers in the different disciplines represented in this topic. The research objectives are, firstly, to develop a systems model of farm tourism; secondly, to examine and describe the scope of farm tourism in Victoria, from the point of view of the farmer; thirdly, to describe the evaluation of the farm tourism experience by the guests who have visited farms in Victoria; and, finally, to investigate the attitudes and involvement of local government bodies in Victoria to farm tourism. Tourism in general is examined, as well as the relationship between agriculture and tourism, leading to a discussion of the definition of rural tourism. General trends in rural tourism are identified, and their relevance to farm tourism is explained. The definition of farm tourism is then covered, with commentary on the application of the characteristics of tourism to the farm tourism industry. Trends in farming are mentioned, which point to the importance of farm tourism as an alternative source of income for the farmer, and a useful form of diversification from farm operations, reducing dependence on one source of income. The concepts of leisure and recreation are also considered, and their relevance to farm tourism is identified.

Ralph, Phillip. "The effectiveness of workplace health promotion within the Victoria Police Force : a pilot study." Thesis, 1992. https://vuir.vu.edu.au/15669/.

Full text
Abstract:
Research conducted within the Victoria Police has previously highlighted problems in the area of employee health and fitness. Officers of law enforcement agencies require a level of health and fitness which will enable them to effectively carry out their daily duties. While much of a police officer's shift is sedentary in nature, intermittent bursts of physical activity require enhanced levels of physical fitness. Despite these physical requirements, after a brief probationary period, police officers are not normally required to undergo any form of medical or fitness assessment for the rest of their careers. A project was conducted within the Victorian Police Force entitled "Operation Physicop" over a twelve month period in a geographical area called 'Y' District (now 'F' and 'G'). The project aimed to measure the effectiveness of workplace health promotion within the Victoria Police Force by measuring changes in several health and fitness parameters as a result of interventions aimed at influencing health behaviour and the workplace environment in a positive way.

Kliman, Aviva Morrisa. "Evaluation of Health Canada's physical activity guides to healthy active living as motivational instruments." Thesis, 2006. http://hdl.handle.net/1828/1776.

Full text
Abstract:
Health Canada has published national physical activity guidelines, which are included in their 27-page Physical Activity Guide to Healthy Active Living. To date, the use of these guides as motivational instruments for physical activity promotion has not been evaluated. The purpose of this study was to determine whether or not reading the guide 1) increased motivational antecedents to engage in regular physical activity, and 2) increased regular physical activity intention and behaviour over a one month period. Participants included 130 randomly sampled Canadian adults (18 years or older) from Victoria. British Columbia, who were randomly mailed packages consisting of either 1) a questionnaire and a copy of Health Canada's guide, or 2) just a questionnaire. Questionnaire items pertained to participants' socio-demographics, physical activity behaviours (Godin Leisure-Time Exercise Questionnaire), and physical activity motivation (Theory of Planned Behaviour). One month following the completion and return of the first questionnaire, participants were sent a one-month follow-up questionnaire pertaining to their physical activity behaviours throughout the previous month. A manipulation check of randomization between conditions suggested no differences in demographics, prior physical activity, or knowledge of the guide (p > .10). Results revealed significant interactions between the guide condition and physical activity status on instrumental behavioural beliefs (F 2.1 L2 = 6.65, p < .01, n2 = 0.05), and subjective norm (F 2,115 = 5.72 p < .05, 92 = 0.05), but no other factors were significantly different (p > .10). It was concluded that among physically inactive people, receiving Health Canada's guide may increase some informational/motivational constructs, but key motivational antecedents (affective attitude, perceived behavioural control) and outcomes (intention, behaviour) seem unaffected.

Mok, Catherine. "Sexual identity and health of young gay men and lesbians." Thesis, 2000. https://vuir.vu.edu.au/17931/.

Full text
Abstract:
This study utilised a grounded theory approach to explore relationships between life-experiences, sexual identity and health of young gay men and lesbians. The sample was gained using a snowball technique; all informants were aged between 18 and 25 and identified themselves as gay or lesbian. Thirteen people were interviewed using a recursive in-depth technique. Through these in-depth interviews, six major themes emerged from the data collected: (i) concerns of sexual identity; (ii) coming out; (iii) social and sexual relationships; (iv) social support; (v) health issues; and (vi) experiences in the education system. clear that the process of realising sexual identity had a significant impact on respondents' lives. Most felt that they had grown up in environments that were relatively hostile to their emerging sexuality. Issues pertaining to coming out were among those that had most affected the respondents. Both hiding and disclosing their sexuality were reported as being very stressful; no informant, however, felt regret about coming out. The relationships that informants had with their parents remained very important to them. Fear about parental reactions to coming out was common. Isolation to some extent was prevalent with regards to friendships, with most informants reporting both negative and positive reactions from friends on coming out. Lack of social support was a problem expressed by many informants, especially during the time they were coming to terms with their sexuality. In their interactions with health practitioners, informants had often been assumed to be heterosexual, which had adversely affected the level of care provided to them. Generally, the health concerns of the young lesbians related to gynaecological issues, whereas for the young gay men, sexually transmitted diseases were of greatest concern. The lack of accurate and inclusive information about sexuality in curricula and the common failure to acknowledge the presence of gays and lesbians in schools were felt fo be important concerns by the informants, and most reported having felt alienated and isolated to some degree while at school. The main conclusion of this study was that young gay men and lesbians face a range of challenges and difficulties as a result of widespread homophobia and heterosexism in the community. It is clear that there is need for a broader understanding of the types of support that might be required to improve the overall health of young gays and lesbians in a predominantly heterocentric society. Several implications were proposed for future research and for practice.

Tibbert, Stephanie Jane. "Mental toughness and overtraining behaviours." Thesis, 2013. https://vuir.vu.edu.au/24441/.

Full text
Abstract:
The idea of mental toughness (MT) is bewitching. The construct is consistently associated with success and being able to overcome great difficulties while demonstrating dogged perseverance regardless of adversity (Gucciardi, Gordon, & Dimmock, 2008; Jones, Hanton, & Connaughton, 2002). It is no wonder sport psychology researchers strive to understand how to develop and display MT. The increase in published research in this topic attests to the popularity of becoming mentally tough. A clear understanding of MT, what it does and does not enable athletes to do, however, has not yet arrived. The purpose of this thesis was to gain an understanding of MT, with specific attention paid to the relationship with stress/recovery imbalance (SRI).

Honey, Caitlin. "The Emergence of Multi-Sport Holiday Programmes: How Organised Sport has become a form of Childcare." Thesis, 2018. https://vuir.vu.edu.au/40052/.

Full text
Abstract:
Multi-Sport Holiday Programmes (MSHPs) are one of the most popular and prevalent styles of holiday programme for Victorian children. To date, no research has explored MSHPs, and the research on holiday programmes within Australia remains vague. Analysis of MSHPs will contribute to the future direction of children’s organised sport, socialisation, and childcare research. This thesis explores the emergence of MSHPs and considers 1) what political and social factors support their emergence, and, 2) What knowledge and practices pervade MSHPs. This thesis begins by exploring the privatisation of the childcare market in Australia, and how the advancement of children’s sport and physical education policy contributed to the emergence of MSHPs. Although the amount of political commentary surrounding how and why children should engage in sport has progressed, the literature review alludes to a lack of research on holiday programmes in Australia. Considering that 25% of children aged 5-9 years engage in formal care during the holiday period, this poses a significant gap. To address this gap, an examination of MSHPs practices and procedures occurred. The findings show that MSHPs are sites of socialisation that reproduce narrow perspectives of health, gender, and the body. These findings are similar to past research conducted in playground environments, physical education, and junior sports programming. MSHPs do not exist in a silo, and future research should consider them as part of broader children’s sport and physical activity research which investigates discourses of meritocracy, masculine hegemony, and healthism. Thus, recommendations arising from this thesis are twofold: 1) Consider the effects of socialisation within MSHPs alongside research undertaken in schools, sports clubs, and the playground. 2) Analyse and provide recommendations on the juxtaposition of children’s sport/physical education policy and the distribution of federal and state funding for elite sport.

Smee, Cameron. "“If we were all, like, learning at the same time, we might have, like, the same experience”: an investigation into the development of physical subjectivities in early primary education." Thesis, 2019. https://vuir.vu.edu.au/40597/.

Full text
Abstract:
There is growing consensus about the importance of physical activity and regular engagement is known to have a number of health and developmental benefits. Accordingly, research across a variety of fields has argued for the importance of laying the foundations for lifelong physical activity engagement in the early years. The school plays a central role in this effort by impacting children’s initial relationships with physical culture. Within the school, PE is often the primary vehicle for the promotion of physical activity. However, the problems with PE and its failure to connect with all children has been widely reported. Concurrently, there has been a significant physical activity dropout rate in adolescence for girls, and some boys. Scholarly attempts to address these concerns have focused mainly on late primary or high school settings, specifically curriculum and pedagogy. To date, very little research has focused on the early (Year One/Two) years of PE, when many children are developing their initial physical subjectivities. Rather than a period which all children enter as a ‘blank slate’, early PE is defined by the differing levels of experience that children bring to class. How these differing levels of embodied experiences are valued mean the children are constantly engaging in a range of stratified interactions. The outcomes of these interactions can have a profound impact on how students engage in physical activity, both in PE and on the playground. To examine how children are embodying and developing their physical subjectivities in these two spaces, a six- month ethnographic project was conducted at a primary school in Victoria. This allowed for the examination of the experiences of a Year 1/2 cohort through the implementation a variety of ethnographic and child-centred methods. Drawing on a theoretical approach, combining Bourdieu (1998) and Collins (2004), this thesis shows how the outcomes of PE activities, impacted the types of activities that children chose to engage in on the playground. Additionally, the findings show how the children play a key role in reproducing the dominant elements of the field (including the ‘naturalized’ gender order inherent in sport/PE) and the hierarchies that contextualized each activity. This research offers an in-depth focus into the complex social processes, in the playground and PE, which continue to usher children along seemingly pre-determined physical paths. This thesis concludes with a call for a critical approach to early PE that incorporates the different experiences of the children to create 2 curricula, with a particular focus on teaching children to be reflective of the impact of their embodied experiences. This also incorporates changes to the playground as a continuation of the PE space.

Lindsay-Smith, Gabrielle. "Active Ageing in The Community. Exploring the Role of Community Activity Groups for Older Adults for Physical Activity, Health and Wellbeing." Thesis, 2019. https://vuir.vu.edu.au/40057/.

Full text
Abstract:
The proportion of older adults (60+ years) globally, is predicted to more than double between 2017 and 2050. Ageing is often associated with declining health and physical capacity, but has the potential to be a positive experience, often termed Active Ageing or successful ageing. The promotion of Active Ageing within the community, is important, to ensure positive experiences of older adults, and to lessen the burden that older adults have on health and social services. Physical activity (PA) and social support are key determinants of Active Ageing, however, PA declines with age. The aim of this PhD was to investigate Active Ageing in the community, through participation in volunteer-run community activity PA and social programs. This research adopted a case-study approach, specifically the community organisation and associated activities, was Life Activities Clubs Victoria (LACVI). This research included two systematic reviews (study 1), a longitudinal self-report quantitative survey study (n=35, mean age=67) administered in three waves (baseline, six and twelve months) analysed using linear mixed models, and four focus groups (n=24) which were analysed using thematic analysis. A mixed-methods study synthesising results from the survey study and two focus groups (n=11) explored the impact of participation in social and PA programs on social wellbeing, PA and health (study 2a and b). The final qualitative study, analysed the four focus groups, including participants from LACVI and other community activity programs (e.g. Men’s Shed). This study explored how and why participation in PA and social programs impact wellbeing. Study 1. The systematic reviews investigated the association between social support or social integration and PA. In summary, social support for PA and social integration factors, having large friendship networks, and connecting widely and regularly with people, were positively associated with PA levels. Study 2 a and b. Synthesis of the findings of the mixed methods study suggested that program participation significantly reduced loneliness. In addition, participants felt they gained social connectedness through program participation and this was especially important at times of significant life events. The studies suggested that socially oriented PA programs increased motivation to adhere to PA programs long term. This was supported by maintenance of PA levels over one year in the PA groups compared to reduction over one year in social group participants. Study 3. The final qualitative study utilised a leisure-based model of wellbeing to explore the aspects of program participation that older adults felt were important for their wellbeing. in summary, older adults appreciated groups that they could identify with, in order to develop new social contacts, with activities that gave them control, enjoyment, meaning and challenge in their lives. The analysis suggested that both social and PA programs could provide these. Overall, this program of research suggests that community activity programs for older adults offer a variety of benefits for older adults and thereby promote Active Ageing, especially when a variety of types of activity are offered in one setting, with a social focus and in a way that older adults feel they can relate to.

Eddy, Daniel. "‘Our champion and gentleman’ : Dick Reynolds and the Essendon Football Club, 1933-1951." Thesis, 2013. https://vuir.vu.edu.au/22310/.

Full text
Abstract:
Dick Reynolds was one of Australian Rules football’s finest ever contributors, yet he has rarely featured in the corpus of literature on the history of the game. At the height of his fame he was compared with Australia’s finest sportsman of the era, Don Bradman, and he also drew comparisons with the celebrated racehorse, Phar Lap. However the impact of Reynolds on the Essendon Football Club, and the way he was perceived by family, teammates, Essendon supporters and journalists, has never been analysed in depth. This thesis seeks to provide an understanding of the role Reynolds played during two significant periods of stress and upheaval, namely the Great Depression and Second World War. From involvement in a struggling club during the Depression years of the 1930s, through to his own stellar performances on the field, Reynolds would lead the Essendon Football Club into one of the most dominant eras of any team in the history of the Victorian Football League/Australian Football League. By means of extensive range of interviews and a comprehensive examination of newspapers from the period, this thesis will trace the various stages of Reynolds’ playing career, and explore how he, the Essendon Football Club, and Australian Rules football more generally, were regarded during testing times, and how he dealt with the leadership opportunities and expectations which confronted him during this period. By focusing on the role of an individual, and the different ways in which he was perceived, this thesis will provide insight into both the trajectory of a noteworthy Australian Rules football career, along with the district that supported it, and the opportunities, esteem, expectations and pressures placed on a champion footballer.

Smalec, Łukasz. "Siła zbrojna w kulturze strategicznej Stanów Zjednoczonych po zakończeniu zimnej wojny (ciągłość i zmiana)." Doctoral thesis, 2014.

Find full text
Abstract:
Since the terrorist attacks of September (11th) 2001, a wide-ranging debate regarding the appropriate course of American foreign and defence policy as well as national security strategy has opened up. Some critics of the Bush administration’s national strategy accused (the) Republican administration of a disastrous unilateral approach. According to them, the Bush administration has turned back from its long-standing and widely respected or even admirable traditional American liberal internationalism in foreign affairs. The wave of never ending criticism misinterprets foreign policy of the administration as well as American liberal multilateral tradition. The main thesis of the dissertation assumes that in spite of pervasive rhetoric concerns a radical change of American strategic culture during the George Walker Bush presidency tenures, The United States, after the Cold War, was an offensively-oriented superpower with fairly stable strategic culture formed under the influence of international pressure and a number of unique internal determinants. The author hopes that this dissertation will refute the myth according to which 9/11 was the impulse to make a volte in U.S. security strategy and move away from traditional American strategic culture. In practice, Bush’s foreign policy since 9/11 has been heavily influenced by liberal internationalism. The foreign policy of the Republican administration (was) well within mainstream American tradition of liberalism. This aim of the Ph. D. dissertation is to analyse the evolution of the role of military force in American strategic culture after the Cold War. Simultaneously, the author attempted to analyse links between declarative and operational dimensions of U.S. strategic culture. The dissertation is divided into four parts. Chapter I analyses the “theory” of strategic culture. The aim of this part is to provide an essential theoretical framework or rather an introduction to further analysis concerning the continuity and change of U.S. strategic culture after the Cold War. The following chapters strictly adhere to the subject of U.S. strategic culture. In chapter II the author tries to analyse context of U.S. strategic culture. The author attempts to outline the impact on the shape U.S. strategic culture of American, unique geostrategic conditions, historic experience, U.S. political thought and system and (the) American way of life. The subject of the third chapter will be the strategic and doctrinal manifestations of strategic culture of the United States. The aim of the author is to identify and analyse how experience of current Post-Cold War era armed conflicts, changes in the international environment and the unique factors depicted in the previous section shape U.S. National Security Strategy, military doctrines and theoretical reflections on the American way of war. In the last –chapter IV discusses the operational dimension of American strategic culture. The author tries to analyse the evolution of the use of force after the Cold War, both in terms of direct armed conflicts and indirect military presence inter alia military bases located around the world and military exercises.
