Full text
Abstract:
This chapter investigates Michel de Montaigne’s engagement with the Italian humanist conception of “civil conversation” as an exercise for training effective political counselors and ambassadors. Using himself as a model, Montaigne prescribes a more confrontational, uncivil form of conversation as a means to train his readers into a high tolerance for political negotiation with the widest possible range of interlocutors and opinions. Following the conventions of the humanist literature on political education, Montaigne argues that the best way to practice political negotiation and other forms of conversation with political opponents is to go out and do it. The chapter then compares this theme of the Essais with Rainer Forst’s conception of tolerance as a form of civil public reason.

Full text
Abstract:
The pulmonary oxygen uptake (pV̇O2) kinetic response to exercise provides valuable non-invasive insight into the control of oxidative phosphorylation and determinants of exercise tolerance in children and adolescents. Few methodologically robust studies have investigated pV̇O2 kinetics in children and adolescents, but age- and sex-related differences have been identified. There is a clear age-related slowing of phase II pV̇O2 kinetics during heavy and very heavy exercise, with a trend showing during moderate intensity exercise. During heavy and very heavy exercise the oxygen cost is higher for phase II and the pV̇O2 component is truncated in children. Sex-related differences occur during heavy, but not moderate, intensity exercise, with boys having faster phase II pV̇O2 kinetics and a smaller pV̇O2 slow component compared to girls. The mechanisms underlying these differences are likely related to changes in phosphate feedback controllers of oxidative phosphorylation, muscle oxygen delivery, and/or muscle fibre recruitment strategies.

Full text
Abstract:
High-intensity interval training (HIIT) is characterized by brief, intermittent bursts of near- or maximal-intensity exercise, interspersed by periods of active or passive recovery. The limited available evidence suggests that HIIT is an efficacious training method for young athletes. The effect of HIIT on cardiorespiratory fitness, endurance performance, explosive strength, and sport-specific performance has been examined in a range of young athletic populations from various sports. Furthermore, promising preliminary findings suggest that HIIT may confer further benefits to a range of health outcome measures including fasting insulin, lipoproteins, systolic blood pressure, and endothelial function; obese youth may benefit particularly from this type of training. Improved cardiorespiratory fitness has been observed consistently after HIIT in athletic and non-athletic populations. Larger studies, extended over longer periods, that include valid measures of exercise compliance, tolerance, and enjoyment are required to further delineate the priority that could be afforded to this type of training.

Abstract:
A 16-year-old girl with a diagnosis of diffuse cutaneous systemic sclerosis is referred to a specialist pulmonary hypertension centre with a history of progressive breathlessness, reduced exercise tolerance, and raised pulmonary pressures on transthoracic echocardiogram. She is found to have pulmonary arterial hypertension on right cardiac catheterization and is started on sildenafil, a phosphodiesterase-5 inhibitor, which stabilizes her condition. An endothelin receptor antagonist is added, which provides some initial symptomatic improvement. She continues to deteriorate over a period of 5 years, ultimately requiring intravenous prostanoids, the only treatment to provide a real symptomatic and haemodynamic improvement. This chapter explores the physiology and pathophysiology of pulmonary arterial hypertension, its classification, the means of investigation and diagnosis, who to refer to specialist centres, and the concepts behind current and future treatment strategies.

Abstract:
This chapter considers the research project as a temporary, liminal community, always at risk of dispersal from external incentives and internal frustrations. Participant commitment can be sustained through the traditional mechanism of ritual, while intellectual insight advances in play; junior researchers can animate both modes of sociability and achieve influence thereby. Shared space and shared time coordinate planned interactions and also facilitate spontaneous emergences. Examples from the Göttingen Interdisciplinary Working Group on Cultural Property illustrate the intellectual payoffs of coffee machines, dancing, visual project mapping, and writing the grant renewal application as exercises in social as well as intellectual coordination. In the middle stages of research, a tolerance for conceptual ambiguity at the project level can facilitate lower-level successes and interactions.

Abstract:
This chapter proposes that contemporary philosophers of religion can learn from the first group of thinkers who engaged in philosophy of religion in the English language: the seventeenth-century Cambridge Platonists. Working under the dire conditions of the English Civil Wars, they nonetheless advanced a robust defense of tolerance, a moral and theological realism that saw goodness in terms of a love for nature rather than arbitrary volition, and a philosophical methodology that took religious practice and cultivating virtue (justice, integrity, and especially charity or love) seriously in the practice of philosophy of religion. Cudworth, More, Smith, and others exercised an admirable spirit and principle of charity that were instrumental in challenging the racism and exploitation of their times. The chapter defends the contemporary importance of such charity and identifies cases when philosophers today at least seem to take anti-charitable, derogatory, condemnatory views of their colleagues in philosophy of religion.
