Smith, James Sullivan. "Example-based methods for natural language processing with applications to machine translation and preposition correction." Thesis, University of Oxford, 2012. http://ethos.bl.uk/OrderDetails.do?uin=uk.bl.ethos.558511.

Abstract:
We investigate the use of example-based methods for Natural Language Processing tasks. Specifi- cally, we look at machine translation and preposition prediction. We propose a new framework for the hybridisation of Example-Based and Statistical Machine Translation (EBMT and SMT) systems. We add powerful new functionality to the Moses SMT system to allow it to work effectively with our EBMT system. Within this framework, we investigate the use of two types of EBMT system. We first create an EBMT system which uses string-based matching and evaluate it within the hybrid framework. We investigate several variations, but find that the hybrid system is unable to match the performance of the pure SMT system. We next created a syntax-based EBMT system which uses dependency trees to compare inputs to the example base, and show that this system is consistently better than the string-based approach. We find that while the SMT system still performs better overall, the syntax-based hybrid does perform particularly well for some examples. We then look at the application of example-based methods to preposition prediction for non- native English writers. We create two systems, one of which is syntax-based, and the other string- based. The syntax-based system again uses dependency information to make predictions, and we show that it performs with a very high precision but a low recall. The string-based system uses n-gram counts to make preposition predictions. We show that this approach is simple and fast, and performs as well as or better than other leading systems in the field. We conclude that example-based techniques continue to yield impressive results for NLP tasks, and expect the field to benefit further as computing and data resources develop.

Read, Stephanie Helen. "Applying missing data methods to routine data using the example of a population-based register of patients with diabetes." Thesis, University of Edinburgh, 2015. http://hdl.handle.net/1842/21078.

Full text
Abstract:
Background: Routinely-collected data offer great potential for epidemiological research and could be used to make randomised controlled trials (RCTs) more efficient. The use of routine data for research has been limited by concerns surrounding data quality, particularly data completeness. To fully exploit these information-rich data sources it is necessary to identify approaches capable of overcoming high proportions of missing data. Using a 2008 extract of the Scottish Care Information – Diabetes Collaboration (SCIDC) database, a population-based register of people with a diagnosis of diabetes in Scotland, I compared the findings of several methods for handling missing data in a retrospective cohort study investigating the association between body mass index (BMI) and all-cause mortality in patients with type 2 diabetes. Methods: Discussions with clinicians and logistic regression analyses were used to determine the likely mechanisms of missingness and the relative appropriateness of a selection of missing data methods, such as multiple imputation. Sequentially more complicated imputation approaches were used to handle missing data. Cox proportional hazard model coefficients for the association between BMI and all-cause mortality were compared for each missing data method. Age-standardised mortality rates by categories of BMI at around the time of diagnosis were also presented. Results: There were 66,472 patients diagnosed with type 2 DM between 2004 and 2008. Of these patients, 21% of patients did not have a recording of BMI at time of diagnosis. Amongst patients with complete BMI data, there were 5,491 deaths during 296,584 person years of follow-up. Amongst patients with incomplete data, there were 2,090 deaths during 79,067 person-years of follow-up. Analyses indicated that the primary mechanism of missingness was missing at random, conditional on patient year of diagnosis and vital status. In particular, patients with missing data had considerably worse survival than patients without missing data. Regardless of the method for handling the missing data, a U-shaped relationship between BMI and mortality was observed. Compared to complete case analysis, the association between BMI and alliii cause mortality was weaker using multiple imputation approaches with estimates moving towards the null. Closest observation imputation had the smallest effect on estimates compared to complete case analysis. Risk of mortality was consistently highest in the less than 25kg/m² BMI group. For example, estimates obtained using multiple imputation using chained equations indicated that patients with a BMI below 25kg/m² had a 38% higher risk of mortality than patients in the 25 to less than 30kg/m² BMI category. Conclusions: Alternative methods to complete case analysis can be computationally intensive with many important practical considerations. However, it remains valuable to explore the robustness of estimates to departures from the assumptions made by complete case analysis. The use of these methods can preserve the sample size and therefore may be useful in developing risk prediction scores. Mortality was lowest amongst overweight or obese patients relative to normal weight. Further work is required to identify optimal approaches to weight management amongst patients with diabetes.

Abstract:
As part of my thesis, I am interested in the issue of creating traditional 2D animations, where all the images are handcrafted. Specifically, I explore how computers can assist artists in producing animations efficiently without reducing the artistic creative process. To address this problem, my work falls within the scope of automatic methods, where the animator collaborates iteratively with the computer. I propose a method that takes two keyframe images and a series of 2D vector fields describing the motion in image space of the animation, and generates intermediate images while preserving the given style as an example. My method combines two manual animation techniques: pose-to-pose and frame-by-frame animation, providing strong control by allowing any generated image to be edited in the same way as the example images provided. My research covers several domains: motion analysis, 2D curve control, mark-based rendering, and paint simulation

Abstract:
The problem of simulating a crowd to see how it would behave in certain situations or just to create a realistic-looking scene to be used in a movie or video game is important and complex, and there are many different methods to solve it. This project is primarily an investigation of the example-based crowd simulation method described in the article "Crowds by Example" by Lerner et al. In the article, traced video footage of crowds are used to create a data set. The simulation program continuously finds situations in the data set that resembles the current situations in the simulation and updates the simulation thereby. We implemented this for around 10 agents using Unity 3D. Example-based crowd simulations does not only, like some other types of crowd simulation methods (for example ORCA), take collision avoidance into account but also the more complex ways the human mind thinks and therefore does not always behave as one would predict. The main conclusion is that this method of simulating crowds has the potential to create more realistic simulations than other forms of crowd simulations. The downsides are that the time the program spends creating simulations can quickly get very high and to make realistic simulations a lot of video footage must be filmed and then traced.

Abstract:
Context. During each iteration of the application, we need to test the usability of the application. Therefore, how to improve efficiency and test according to the user's real experience is a problem faced by the company. According to our preliminary research on the literature. In the past, the usability of software systems was evaluated subjectively and the process was not well defined [21]. Every usability evaluation method has its advantages and disadvantages. Some are difficult to apply, and others are dependent on the measurer's opinions or instruments [21]. Moreover, currently, there are few studies on usability testing for e-commerce applications. And there is a lack of a usability test optimization scheme suitable for e-commerce applications. Therefore, we choose this direction for research. Objectives. This paper aims to provide an optimization method for usability testing process based on user requirements for e-commerce applications existing in the market, so that enterprises can more effectively implement the usability testing process in the process of iterative update of applications. Methods. In order to find the answers to the research questions, we used Literature review and Survey to collect the data. In the Survey section, we used the Questionnaire and Interview methods. After the data collection is completed, we perform quantitative and qualitative analysis of the data and organize the research conclusions. Results. Through a literature review, we conducted a systematic review of the usability challenges in e-commerce applications and how to overcome them. And we found the research direction in this process. We use the questionnaire to obtain the usability requirements of respondents (also users of e-commerce applications) for e-commerce applications, and use our optimization method (EEC) to translate user's requirements into usability test script content. And according to the feedback of the respondents to determine the content priority. We used interviews to understand the priorities that companies follow when actually performing usability testing. And compare it with the priority of our script to verify the effectiveness of our method. Conclusions. We summarize relevant conclusions by finding answers to research questions. Finally, an optimization method for usability testing is summarized, which will help future testers better implement usability testing to a certain extent.

Abstract:
In this thesis I have studied the so-called “Ševčík method” based on the example of his 40 Variations, op. 3. I’ve tried to achieve a deeper understanding of what the exercises are good for and how they work. I took a closer look at Otakar Ševčík’s life and work history, I also investigated other’s opinions and judgements of the “method” that were appearing in press and literature during the last hundred years. The practical part of my project is the experiment that I’ve put myself through. I was diligently practicing 40 Variations every day, trying to improve my technique and learn by playing how to apply those exercises in real life. As a result of this process I’ve developed my bow technique and gained better understanding of how to use Ševčík’s exercises.

The sounding part of the work consists of the following recordings:

1)Mozart before 2) Mozart after 3) Rossini before 4) Rossini after

The Corona virus situation spring semester 2020 has caused limitations in the recording possibilities. The recordings may be supplemented.

Due to the implementation of the cGMP system, the investments of the major pharmaceutical companies in Taiwan’s domestic biotechnology pharmaceutical industry have increased. The expansion of production scale and the increase of market supply inevitably bring about a fierce competition in drug prices. Taiwan’s import tariffs on drugs have been gradually and completely abolished after joining the World Trade Organization (WTO). Currently, the domestic hospitals and drug users prefer to use imported drugs. The imported drugs rely on a lower price for competition in the domestic market. Therefore, the small and medium-sized pharmaceutical companies that focus on the domestic market are facing a severe challenge. The international pharmaceutical companies while facing the health insurance drug price adjusted down year after year and cost considerations and price stability continue to increase the sales promotion and logistics, finance, and information outsourcing operations. Taiwan’s domestic biotechnology pharmaceutical industry remains in the traditional operation by having all the businesses and processes handled proprietarily. The main purposes of this study are to explore the following issues: ① For the accounts receivable of the domestic biotechnology pharmacy industry, the analytic comparison is conducted to explore the difference between the self-collection and collection process outsourced to the pharmaceutical logistics companies; ② According to the FMEA results, if an outsourced collection is beneficial to the domestic biotechnology pharmaceutical industry, the companies should have changed from the self-collection to the outsourced collection system. What are the impacts resulted from the change of collection method in the companies? What are the counter solutions available to the companies in order to reduce these obstacles? In this research, the FMEA was used to assess and analyze the self-collection and outsourced collection of the accounts receivable of the domestic biotechnology pharmaceutical industry. It recommends to the companies in adjusting the current collection of accounts receivable according to the analytic results of the FMEA and RPN value comparison. When an organizational change is needed, obstacles are expected. Some solutions derived from change management should be adopted to minimize the obstacles from the organizational change. Finally, the economic effects of outsourced accounts receivable were also justified.

Abstract This study explored the online courses of domestic art galleries and the phenomenon of the courses focusing on instructional teaching. It is an action research generated by the confusion of this phenomenon. Constructivist teaching is feasible in the art museum’s educational theories and courses; Internet has the advantage to implement a constructivist teaching. Hence, the problem-based learning was taken as an example. It attempted to implement constructivist teaching in the online courses of art galleries. Basically, it is an action research based on theories. In the beginning, leading and formal action teaching were performed, and then personnel at National Palace Museum were interviewed in order to find out the feasible and practical option for art museum. It is expected to change the phenomenon of art museum’s online courses which focuses on instructional teaching. Results of this study: 1. The online courses of foreign art galleries seldom adopt constructivist teaching either. The online courses of domestic art museum can hardly refer to them. 2. If the online courses of art museums implement constructivist teaching, it will provide different teaching strategies and viewpoints of learning, which also can be further explored. 3. “An action research of implementing the constructivist teaching methods in art museum online courses—a problem-based learning example” found out problems in leading action teaching and modified them to result in more practical formal action teaching. 4. Effects of Action Teaching (1) The community website Facebook is suitable for implementing the online courses of art museum’s constructivist teaching (taking example of problem-based learning). But the information should be collected regularly for studies. (2) The methods include: A. Encourage the students to learn actively and initially; B. Guide the students to discuss with others; C. Delay the work progress, to guide the students to ask questions and enable the students to acquire the problem-based learning ability. (3) Utilize the strategy of problem-based learning and pay attention to the training of students’ self-oriented learning ability, which can also reduce the pressure of teachers to teach cross-disciplinary knowledge and skills. (4) It was proved that it is possible to adopt constructivist teaching in the online courses of art museum. Also good effects are achieved in the three aspects of knowledge, skills and attitude. (5) The dominant power of learning was handed over to the students. Different groups had different results. Their learning achievements laid particular stress on the display of information technology. However the introduction of the art galleries’ articles and the depth were not enough. (6) It was proved that students can learn related knowledge and skills from the online courses, but it lays particular stress on those in which the students are responsible and it is difficult to understand the knowledge and skills necessary for completing all the tasks. (7) This study performed online courses through typing. This can be used for long distance learning, but it can’t replace face to face teaching. 5. The study results were shared and the people involving in the field were interviewed. The modified option for practical business of art museum was proposed. Suggestions of this study: 1. Suggestions for art galleries (1) Constructivist teaching can provide viewpoints of learning which is different from that of instructional teaching. It is a teaching strategy worthy for the online courses of art museum. (2) With advanced technology, it is easier to implement the constructivist online courses of art galleries and it is a perfect time to do it now. (3) The modified option of next circle can be adopted to implement the constructivist online courses of art galleries. (4) Online teacher training classes, online education activities can be hold at art galleries. The cooperation between art galleries and schools can also be carried out to execute the modified option of next circle. 2. Suggestions for the teachers (1) From action teaching, the leading method in the teaching process is induced as concrete references for teachers. (2) The learning method of cross disciplinary indicated that it is impossible to possess all specialties. Admit your disadvantages and learn from teaching. (3) Pay attention to the design of problem-based learning task. Give the students more time so that they can understand more completely and learn all necessary knowledge and skills for completing the tasks. 3. Suggestions for future studies (1) Learners from farther places can be investigated to indicate the features of online courses. (2) More studies involving in video communication can be performed.

This thesis investigates the controlled transaction between the case-research company and it’s related enterprises which based on the current policy and regulation. Furthermore; the thesis is totally on the impartial foundation and combines the current regulation and the company which pursuant to this regulation. Not only contains finished products, semi-finished products integrate with each other cope suppliers, but also contains the operation to provide guidance and production technology, that is including the licensing and production for know-how intangible assets such as supply, lacking of suitable comparable objects, hoping the profits-split methods can provide the best resolutions.(Residual Profit-Split Method). Firstly, according to business function analysis, divided each company’s deserved profits from related company’s amalgamation surplus, and then create a residual income based on each company to create the basis of intangible assets - cost of labor and the research and development spending, as separate factors, the remaining proportion of profits allocated to each enterprise. In other words, Firstly, Using any other sub-routine activities, income to value it’s available. Secondly, to allocate the remaining income in all relative value of intangible assets contributed. Finally, to make a comparable profit method to confirm the range of Arm’s Length Principle based on Residual Profit-Split Method is suitable for the aforementioned theories. The results shows that in this case study, the company no matter confirm by residual profits-split methods or the comparable-profits methods, they have to face the risk from the tax authority to adjust their taxes, and in the calculation of residual profit split method, by adjusting transfer pricing, the controlled company''s operating margin comparable profit method in the calculation of regular trading profits of the average interval is near the upper and lower limits of the same inspection for a suitable division factor. Taiwan’s current transfer pricing system, since lacks of confidence from the tax authority or the report, or immature technology on the audit, causing the government and taxpayers have lots of dispute and disagreement. Hoping with this study to provide the reference to related-authorities to make or revise the law, regulation or practical implement and promote the tax reform in Taiwan.

Abstract Most the available searching engines use keywords and/or standard patterns for searching. Due to their searching mechanisms, however, sometimes users would not know how to start it. In order to improve this problem, this study use images, especially digital images, as the input for searching and identifying. The input images will be pre-processed to detect the image size, to set the flag and to choose the subject. This pre-process could not only efficiently reduce the error rate for feature analysis, but also significantly save the time for analysis. The developed system in this study would adopt suitable method for different searching subject on the feature analysis. In case of identifying a plant, for instance, it is often to use its leaf to search. Therefore, it is more important to detect the contour of a leaf than to analyze the hue-distribution. The detecting contour is emphasized on the number of phyllotaxy, saw-tooth features, elongation and compactness. It is very often to have an image of plant’s leaf with complicated background. In order to reduce the error rate caused by its background, therefore, the developed system also provides tools for users to choose the subject of input image. Then, the chosen subject will be further analyzed and compared. In case of identifying a scenic image, it is very common to have an unclear subject of an image. Therefore, the analysis will emphasize on hue-distribution and texture. In addition, it is also expected to search out those images of similar subject. For this purpose, this developed system also provides the function of equally breaking-up the whole image before further analysis. Then, user can choose the subject section from the image and assign a suitable factor for section’s characteristics to speed-up the search. This method could not only be regarded as search for similar subject, but also as the basis for partial search. According to the test results of the developed system, it is confirmed that the concept of pre-process could efficiently reduce the error rate of identifying as well as the time of feature analysis. The method of pre-process will be dependent on the subject of searching. No matter of what kind of subject, this study presents the method of using multi-tier-distributed database for searching on the Internet. It allows the users to inquire information from anywhere at any time, so as to accomplish the learning environment of Seeing-is- Knowing.

Nowadays, enterprises need to continuously develop innovative products and services for survival in fiercely commercial competition. However, there is a high rate of failure for creating new products because products suppliers do not consider customers’ needs. Besides, due to the popularity of blogs, there are more and more enterprisers attempt to extract useful ideas and customer preferences from bloggers’ comments. On the other hand, patent documents can easily be obtained. By using these documents, enterprise can not only understand the trends of technology development, but also creat of innovative technologies base on them. Thus, enterprises need a systematic and effective method to discover the voice of customers and patents of technology and then based on them to develop new products. This study proposes a new service creation procedure called “web mining based innovation product development method” which contains seven tools including text miming, quality function deployment (QFD), the theory of inventive problem solving (TRIZ), Fuzzy Linguistic, refined Kano model and I-S model. Firstly, our method extracts consumers’ needs by using text miming and then uses QFD to find contradiction of the needs and technology. Next, based on the contradiction relationship between needs and technology, new service functions can be created by using TRIZ. Fuzzy questionnaires and pugh concept selection are employed to evaluate the new created service functions by domain experts. Finally, refined Kano model and I-S model have been used to verify consumer’s opinions toward these new innovative services. A real case of online music services creation has been provided to demonstrate the effectiveness of our method.

The purpose of this paper is to construct a reference model of enterprise architecture for questionnaire design via an architecture method to survey whether the organization has certain strategic goal requirements. We find that the current enterprise architecture framework does not provide a method to design a user-defined architecture framework except TOGAF architecture modeling language: ArchiMate. We propose six questionnaire design steps to construct a generic reference model view for the survey about a variety of strategic goal requirements in the organization. We take the survey of enterprise architect requirement for example to design the questionnaire. The questionnaire result will be collected in the near future as a reference for setting enterprise architect capacity and promoting the enterprise architecture.

Knowledge economy is the major economic growth sectors in the economic development in recent years, and how to manage knowledge becomes a major research topic. The past studies show that selection, education, assignment and retaining for knowledge workers is the key success factors of knowledge management. Many companies and countries consider attracting the best talent of the world is the most important goal to develop the competitiveness but training knowledge workers needs to spend a lot of resources .However, there exists the risk that well- trained knowledge workers may leave and serve another company after training. This risk is particularly harmful to small companies. To resolve this problem, this research attempts to break down the knowledge-based work into different workstations and individual officers by the concept of standardization of production processes. So, the knowledge which is used to complete the work at each station contained less than the original, and companies can reduce training resources in each station workers. This study tried to find out the knowledge transfer way by literature research. The past research results showed that using knowledge externalization we can transfer knowledge by documentation. Knowledge-based work can be cut into sub-station operations by the output session file and documents. This research also studied the circuit board maintenance industry as a case study, and the result showed that knowledge-based work can be successfully cut into the work processes of individual workstations and the knowledge of the various stations and training needs were a lot lower than the original. It solves the personnel training problem and should be able to help small companies to solve the shortage of knowledge workers.

Financial distress prediction (FDP) is an important topic. There are many investors and researchers focus on this question, From statistical methods earlier to machine learning algorithm today, how to use financial ratios and other potential feature to build a better model is a wildly studied question. We have proved that build model by corporate governance indicator and financial ratios can improve performance in Taiwan dataset, but not in USA data set. For the reason we cannot collect as much corporate governance indicators as Taiwan dataset, we proposed a stacking ensemble algorithm by using financial ratios and corporate governance indicators, and prove that in specific cost ratios, this algorithm is a better way in FDP.

The traditional Taguchi method mainly aims at the optimizing of the single quality characteristic. In fact, the product or the process frequently has two or two above quality characteristics. And generally, deals with the problem of multiple quality characteristic, only can depend on the engineer's experience to choose the factor level. Because the engineer’s recognizes are different, it’s easy to have the uncertainty and the fuzziness, when each qualities characteristic relevance is stronger or which considers the quality characteristic are more, engineer must decide the best factor level combination is more difficult, simultaneously takes to the engineer to solve the difficulty which in the multiple quality characteristic conflicts. Therefore, the product multiple quality characteristic optimization decision to promotes the enterprise product quality is the quite important subject. In view of this subject, the research first uses Taguchi method by only considering the single quality characteristic ,then separately calculating the S/N ration(signal to noise ratio) according to the quality characteristic, then transferring the S/N ration by using the Grey Relation Analysis to the Grey Relational Coefficient, finally unifies the Fuzzy Inference System to find the Multiple Performance Characteristics Index(MPCI) , uses the characteristic which the value is the higher the better ,to find the best parameter combination, then to find the main factor which affects two quality characteristic simultaneously by Analysis of Variance, demonstrating the best parameter combination of two above quality characteristics. And demonstrating the correctness of the best parameter combination. Finally, using the case – LCD process elaborated proposes which is the optimization procedure and the pattern of numerical analysis. Demonstrating the effectiveness and the usability of the research, helps the company to save the experimental cost and to reduce the new product to induct the production base time interval by the experimental stage. The findings showed, not only this research may apply in the different quality characteristic combination, also all has promoted originally product quality.

In spite that the Circulation Industry grows rapidly, this industry is in shortage of human resources and it is difficult to train employees for this industry. Appling the Sandwich-teaching Method suggest a way to solve the lack in human power and develop students' understanding and interests upon the Circulation industry by way of training process. It could also avoid wasting of education resources for later highly staff circulating rate. This research aims to approach the teaching effect of Sandwich-teaching Method in the Circulation Management Departments of Vocational and Technological Colleges and Institutes. The purpose of the research will be stated as follows: 1. To understand the practical models of Sandwich-teaching Method in the Circulation Management Departments 2. To comprehend the necessity, satisfaction degree of implementation and viewpoint of implementation effect toward Sandwich-teaching Method for students, (specialized) teachers and cooperative enterprises in the Circulation Management Departments of Vocational and Technological Colleges and Institutes 3. To recognize the necessity, the satisfaction degree of implementation, and the differences of implementation effects based on the population statistic reference data of three fields (namely: students. Specialized teachers and cooperative enterprises) 4. To realize the necessity, the satisfaction degree of implementation and the differences of implementation effects among the three fields 5. To submit research discoveries and suggestions for schools to improve Sandwich-teaching Method and as a reference data for enterprises to promote human power resources The cooperative objects of the research involve students taking part-time jobs in ordinary grocery stores and convenience chain stores, specialized teachers and enterprises executives. We use questionnaire and face-to-face interviews with the assistance of t test, simple factor variation analysis and IPA as the way for documentary material (data) analysis. The main analytical outcome will be stated as follows: 1. The application models of Sandwich-teaching Method in the Circulation Management Departments of Vocational and Technological Colleges and Institutes will be different due to different schools and different school systems. 2. Students regard the Sandwich-teaching Method highly necessary. Their satisfaction is around medium, while their comments for its effects are between agreeable and normal. Students, with the training period between 1 to 3 years or studying in Fortune Institute of Technology, have higher requirements for the Method. For students, aged under 20, studying, in Fortune Institute of Technology, with the training period under 8 month, or 8 months to 1 year or 1-2 years, have higher satisfaction degree. Male students, aged under 20, with the training period under 8 months, or over 8 months to 1 year or 1-2 years or studying in Jin-Wen Institute of Technology and National Kaohsiung First University of Science and Technology have higher regards to its results. 3. For the necessity of Sandwich-teaching Method, the satisfaction rate of specialized teachers is between satisfied and normal.
