Abstract:
In 2004, the U.S. Preventive Services Task Force (USPSTF) published a Grade D recommendation for both testicular self-examination (TSE) and clinical evaluation to screen for testicular cancer in asymptomatic males. This review committee reaffirmed these recommendations in 2009 and again in 2011 (Testicular Cancer: Screening Release Date: April 2011. Final Update Summary: Testicular Cancer: Screening. U.S. Preventive Services Task Force. September 2016). The 2011 USPSTF review found no significant evidence that would warrant a change from the last full review in 2004. We believe that the USPSTF erred in its assessments. As acknowledged in the task force report, testicular cancer is not believed to be preventable, and treatment of early detected testicular cancer is generally associated with very favorable outcomes; it is our belief therefore that every encouragement should be given to early detection. We are therefore requesting that the USPSTF review the D rating for testicular examination, both in a clinical setting and as self-examination. We are requesting this, as recent studies and public health warrant a change in grade. The new studies build on earlier studies that support the benefits of regular screening by individuals and their physicians. Further, and equally important, we believe that the current grade and attendant information confuses men and boys about the importance of self-care and wellness and continues to inadvertently reinforce negative cultural attitudes. We believe that adjusting the rating to a Grade B is both warranted and necessary.

Abstract:
This article explores student perceptions of writing online examinations for the first time during the Covid-19 pandemic. Prior to the pandemic, examinations at an open and distance learning institution in South Africa were conducted as venue-based examinations. From March 2020, all examinations were moved online. Online examinations were introduced as an emergency measure to adhere to safety and health protocols. Although students in developed countries have indicated benefits to online examinations, less is known about students living in the Global South when it comes to writing examinations online. Not enough is known about the benefits and challenges of online examinations since they were implemented as an emergency measure. We aimed at exploring student perceptions of writing online examinations for the first time, improve examination processes by including student views. Through an analysis of 336 written responses to an open-ended question posed at the end of an online survey, we established that digital access, duration of the examination, and the examination system interface affected students’ success in online examinations. Based on the findings, we recommend that students need to be given tools and data to participate in online examinations. Furthermore, students should be granted ample opportunity to practise writing online examinations while receiving the necessary support.

Abstract:
Two studies investigated students' performance on makeup examinations. In Study 1, 70 of 520 students used a comprehensive makeup, and in Study 2, 103 of 220 students used an hour makeup to replace missed regularly scheduled examinations. Students scored significantly higher on regularly scheduled than on either examination. Further, students who did not miss an examination earned higher total scores than students who did. Finally, more students took the hour makeup than comprehensive makeup examination. It is suggested that (a) these findings be included in instructors' manuals for introductory psychology textbooks, (b) instructors inform students about the makeup-examination scores at the beginning of a term, and (c) instructors use this information to decide on what format of makeup examination to use.

Dehrmann, Luiza. "Predictors of examination success in the SAICA qualifying examinations." Thesis, Stellenbosch : Stellenbosch University, 2013. http://hdl.handle.net/10019.1/80094.

Abstract:
Thesis (MComm)--Stellenbosch University, 2013.
ENGLISH ABSTRACT: The objective of the study was to identify predictors of success in the SAICA Board Examination. The study considered various personality states and traits, cognitive ability, learning and study strategies and academic progress as predictors of academic success of auditing trainees writing the SAICA board examinations in order to qualify as Chartered Accountants. A detailed literature review was undertaken which identified that academic success has successfully been predicted by the Big Five personality traits, cognitive ability, by elements of psychological capital more specifically hope, efficacy, resiliency and optimism. The literature also confirmed the successful prediction of academic success through prior learning achievements and the implementation of study and learning strategies. The research study was an ex post facto, quantitative and exploratory study. The study sample consisted of a group of 126 auditing trainees from three of the Big Four auditing firms who were preparing to write the Public Practice Examination (“PPE”). These students were assessed by means of a test battery consisting of the Basic Traits Inventory, which assessed personality traits, the Ravens Advanced Progressive Matrix, which tested cognitive ability, the Psychological Capital Questionnaire in order to test positive psychology states, and the Learning and Study Strategies Inventory to test a number of study and learning techniques. The study also gathered biographical information pertaining to past academic results in terms of third year accounting marks and results from their Certificate in the Theory of Accounting. The study identified hope and auditing as strong predictors of success in the PPE SAICA Board examination. It went further to investigate the predictors of success in the qualifications leading up to the PPE. The study confirmed that third year accounting results is a strong predictor of success at the Certificate in the Theory of Accounting (CTA) level. A number of personality states and traits, study and learning strategies and indices of prior academic success, proved to be good predictors of success in the QE1 and PPE SAICA Board Examinations. It further identified prior academic progression as a successful predictor of success in the PPE. The overall conclusion of the study was that the success of the PPE cannot be considered in isolation, but rather based on the identified predictors of personality states and traits, study and learning strategies and academic progress throughout the academic career of an aspiring Chartered Accountant.

Gerdeman, Anthony Michael 1968. "Understanding the oral examination process in professional certification examinations." Diss., The University of Arizona, 1998. http://hdl.handle.net/10150/282619.

Full text
Abstract:
The subjective nature of oral examinations often lead to reliability estimates that are lower than other types of examinations (i.e., written examinations). The potentially biasing individual attributes of examiners (i.e., experience) are of particular concern since the oral examination process depends specifically upon the quality of their assessments. In addition, traditional reliability estimation procedures are not always possible for some oral exams due to the utilization of incomplete measurement designs (i.e., one examiner per candidate) resulting from the inherent high costs and complicated logistics associated with large scale oral examinations. Consequently, the current study attempts to evaluate the quality of one such exam by developing alternative indicators of exam quality using a pre-existing data set. A series of examiner agreement variables were calculated for low, moderate, and high ability candidates and subsequently correlated with each other. A series of exploratory multiple regressions were also used to evaluate the potential impact of several examiner characteristics (experience, gender, specialty, variance of scale use, and fail rate) confined in the data set. Finally, a generalizability (G) study was conducted on a subset of the examination that utilizes a complete measurement design (i.e., two examiners evaluating the same candidate, and all examiners examine all candidates) for lower ability candidates. The G study was then followed by a decision (D) study to determine both the current level of dependability with two examiners, and how much the dependability of the process would improve by adding mure examiners. The results of the current study suggest that evaluating lower ability candidates is different and more difficult than evaluating higher ability candidates. Furthermore, systematic sources of error related to examiners appears to be less or a concern than previously anticipated. Finally, the results of the G-D studies suggest that the current dependability of evaluating lower ability candidates with two examiners could be greatly improved by adding additional examiners to the process.

Mayer, Patricia Lynn Sorci. "Self-care knowledge that informs mothers' behaviors during the enculturation of their daughters regarding breast self-examination." Thesis, The University of Arizona, 1987. http://hdl.handle.net/10150/276622.

Full text
Abstract:
Five Tucson, Arizona, mothers of adolescent daughters participated in exploratory, descriptive nursing research employing ethnographic interviews during July, 1987, to determine what cultural knowledge informs the behaviors of mothers as they enculturate their daughters regarding Breast Self-Examination (BSE). Five major taxonomies of cultural knowledge emerged: "Caring For Yourself Means Surviving As A Species"; "Being Unsure, Thinking 'Why Bother?'   "; "It Can't Happen To Me"; "If I Don't Know About It, It Isn't There"; and "It's Unnatural To Touch Yourself." Six pairs of conflicting cultural themes both presented BSE as a self-care means to promote human-species survival and simultaneously accounted for women's BSE non-compliance via their uncertainty over BSE techniques, sense of invulnerability to cancer, fear of uncovering disease, and unease with their own bodies. Nursing intervention should reinforce positive cultural knowledge about the female breasts which could be communicated by mothers to their daughters along with procedural knowledge in promoting BSE practice.

Abstract:
Abstract. The aim of the study was to compare the structure of morbidity revealed by the results of preventive medical examination with the structure of morbidity revealed by the results professional examination. Group 1 included 146 999 men aged 20-60, who underwent professional examination, group 2 - 424 770 men aged 21-60 who had undergone preventive medical examinations. In both groups, diseases of the circulatory system are in first place in terms of detection (group 1 – 24,37%, 2 – 41,41%). In second place in the course of preventive medical examinations are diseases of the endocrine system, nutritional disorders and metabolic disorders (16,94%), and in case of professional examination - diseases of the eye and its adnexa (15,46%). The third place in the course of professional examination is - diseases of the respiratory system (14,65%), with preventive medical examinations - diseases of the digestive system (9.83%). Since the diseases of the musculoskeletal system are not separately taken into account during the clinical examination, they are classified in the category «Other diseases». However, it should be noted that during the professional examination, this group of diseases is detected in 21% of cases. Taking into account the figures obtained for the detection of diseases of the musculoskeletal system, it seems important to focus the attention of occupational medicine specialists on this in order to develop and introduce measures to improve the health of the musculoskeletal system into corporate programs. These differences are associated with a different volume of research conducted for different types of medical examinations, as well as with the fact that a number of diseases of the circulatory system and the endocrine system are a contraindication for employment in contact with harmful labor factors. A higher level of detection of infectious pathology and neoplasms in case of professional examination requires a more thorough analysis.

Abstract:
Introduction: The main symptoms of Parkinson are: tremors, movement resistance, postural instability and bradykinesia. However, other diseases such as Progressive Supranuclear Paralysis, Multiple System Atrophy and Corticobasal Degeneration have similar symptoms. This similarity generates a difficulty of diagnosis, for example, Corticobasal Degeneration is often diagnosed by autopsy. Objectives: To define the differentiating symptoms of Parkinson and the diseases mentioned and to find clinical tests that could aid in the diagnosis. Methodology: The integrative review utilized Scielo and Pubmed databases and the selected clinical examinations were obtained by the book Exame Clinico - 8° edition. Results: Multiple Systems Atrophy is distinguished from Parkinson by occurrence of cerebelar abnormalities, therefore Romberg Test can evidence modified coordination, which may be indicative of Multiple System Atrophy. Corticobasal Degeneration causes loss of ability to identify things by touch and impaired sensitivity on one side of the body, thereby the verification of stereognosia and the examination of superficial sensitivity are useful. Supranuclear Paralysis Progressive generates difficulty of performing vertical movements, thus the examination of ocular motility is necessary. Conclusion: Only clinical examinations aren’t sufficient to generate an accurate diagnosis and complementary exams are necessary for greater precision. However, knowledge about differentiating clinical examinations helps to generate a line of reasoning and examinations to be requested.

Abstract:
The article presents an analysis of the activities of the Bureau of Forensic Medical Examination of St. Petersburg for the production of examinations in cases of adverse outcomes of medical care. It has been established that over the past 5 years, against the background of the continued growth in the total number of commission examinations, the number of examinations of adverse outcomes of medical care has decreased (mainly due to examinations in criminal cases). Defects in the provision of medical care were determined in 2 out of 3 cases, and more often by examinations in civil cases. A direct causal relationship between defects in the provision of medical care and an unfavorable outcome for human health and life was established in 5% of cases. Attention is drawn to the significant differences in the established qualitative and quantitative indicators in comparison with other regions and departments of the country, which requires the unification of the methodology for the production of such examinations.

Abstract:
Safety and health at work means providing working conditions that do not lead to work injuries, occupational diseases and work-related diseases and that create conditions for full physical and psychological protection of employees. Health examinations of employees are undertaken in order to determine and eliminate the causes of illness and health damage related to work. The employer is obliged to ensure the health examination of employees who are assigned to workplaces with special working conditions (climatic conditions, noise, vibrations, radiation, moisture, dust, harmful gases, danger from tools and objects of work, means of transport, waste, hot objects, corrosive matter, explosions, near electricity and working at height), i.e. with increased risk in cases of re-engagement of an employee who has been absent from work at that workplace for more than a year. In Elektroprivreda Crne Gore AD Nikšić, in accordance with the Law on occupational health and safety, the following medical examinations are carried out: - preliminary medical examination (examination performed for the purpose of prior determination and assessment of special health conditions and the employee's ability to work at the workplace for which a medical examination is prescribed by law, which is performed before signing the employment contract, or after an absence from work of more than a year of the day) - periodical medical examination (examination performed annually to monitor and assess the employee's health condition and ability to perform tasks at the workplace for which the law prescribes a medical examination - for employees who perform tasks with difficult working conditions and increased risk at work). The tasks of organizing medical examinations and keeping legal records in connection with medical examinations in Elektroprivreda Crne Gore - AD Nikšić are performed by experts for OHS.

Abstract:
Abstract A multi-functional self-examination ophthalmic device for remote eye examinations has been studied in this paper. The device integrates two standard ophthalmic examinations: slit-lamp and visual acuity. Testing of the device has been performed in a preliminary clinical study. The results show good and comparable images to those of conventional instruments routinely used in ophthalmic clinics. The device can be used in a myriad of remote settings including home monitoring.

Abstract:
The purpose of this document is to serve as a guide that education practitioners working in emergency contexts can use to assess the feasibility of implementing online examinations and using proctoring technologies. The implementation of online high-stakes examinations in Syria and other emergency contexts will require significant investments in achieving the prerequisites needed for feasibility and credibility. Prerequisites include electricity, internet, and devices, as well as the development of the digital skills necessary for students to participate in online exams and for teachers and administrators to facilitate online exams. Further efforts are needed to prevent leakage of information on exam questions and content, and promote cultural change around online examinations.
