Hahn, Allison. Media Culture in Nomadic Communities. NL Amsterdam: Amsterdam University Press, 2021. http://dx.doi.org/10.5117/9789463723022.

Full text
Abstract:
Media Culture in Nomadic Communities examines the ways that new technologies and ICT infrastructures have changed the communicative norms and patterns that regulate mobile and nomadic communities’ engagement in local and international deliberative decision-making. Each chapter examines a unique communicative event, such has how the Maasai of Tanzania have used online petitions to demand government action, how Mongolians in northern China have used microblogs to record and debate land tenure, and how herding communities from around the world have supported the Lakota Sioux protests at Standing Rock. Through these case studies, Hahn argues that mobile and nomadic communities are creating and utilizing new communicative networks that are radically changing local, national, and international deliberations.

Temperley, David. Rhythm and Meter. Oxford University Press, 2018. http://dx.doi.org/10.1093/oso/9780190653774.003.0004.

Full text
Abstract:
Simple duple meter is predominant in rock; the metrical structure is usually clearly conveyed by the alternating “kick-snare” pattern in the drums. An important aspect of rock rhythm is anticipatory syncopation, the placement of accented events (such as stressed syllables) on weak beats just before the strong beat on which they are understood to “belong.” Adjacent syncopations at different levels (e.g., eighth-note and sixteenth-note syncopations) can create cross-rhythms. Harmonic rhythm—the rhythm of changes in harmony—is occasionally used in interesting ways in rock. Hypermeter—meter above the level of the measure—is generally regular, but irregularities are not uncommon; sometimes irregular and shifting meter occurs at lower levels as well.

Full text
Abstract:
This chapter discusses the romantic genealogy of rock 'n' roll and how its style resulted from the happy integration of white hillbilly music with black “race music” or, as it came to be known in the 1950s, “rhythm and blues.” Supported by recent scholarship that has delved into the files of record companies, analyses affirm that rock 'n' roll represents a blatant appropriation of black music by white entrepreneurs. A postmodern view might regard rock 'n' roll not even as music, but as simply “a marketing concept that evolved into a lifestyle.” The chapter also analyzes how Bill Haley's recording of “Rock Around the Clock” turned the tide of American popular music in late 1955.

Paul, David C. Censorship and the Politics of Reception. Edited by Patricia Hall. Oxford University Press, 2016. http://dx.doi.org/10.1093/oxfordhb/9780199733163.013.3.

Full text
Abstract:
This article examines censorship and the politics of reception by focusing on Marc Blitzstein’s opera The Cradle Will Rock. It first describes the external events that conspired to enable Blitzstein’s work to circumvent the censors, making it a legend in the history of American theater. It then considers three screenplays that translated the events connected with the premiere of The Cradle Will Rock to the big screen: the first two written separately by Ring Lardner Jr. and Orson Welles in the mid-1980s and the third written by Tim Robbins in the late 1990s. The article explains how each screenplay illustrates the fact that the relevance of censorship is open to various interpretations and can be used to serve a number of agendas.
