Stettler, Stephanie L. "Sustainable Event Management of Music Festivals: An Event Organizer Perspective." PDXScholar, 2011. https://pdxscholar.library.pdx.edu/open_access_etds/257.

Full text
Abstract:
Sustainably managed music festivals have significant value and can provide a multitude of benefits to a healthy, sustainable and desirable society if their negative impacts are mitigated and positive impacts cultivated. To reach this great potential, sustainable event management of music festivals must become widely adopted and expanded as common practice. To drive this improvement of sustainable event management, there is a need to first understand the barriers and success factors event organizers face moving their music festivals toward sustainability. This study uses a research design of mixed quantitative-qualitative methods: a survey of thirty diverse music festival organizers across the United States and interviews with five selected survey participants. Research draws on pertinent literature from sustainability theory and practice, previous research on sustainable event management, existing strategies of sustainable events, and lessons from organizational change studies. Findings revealed seven key barriers and four success factors associated with sustainable event management of music festivals as well as three specific needs of event organizers to improve sustainable event management. With these findings, seven strategies are presented to help event organizers adopt and improve sustainable event management of music festivals. This study is significant because it fills an important gap in the academic literature on events and sustainability. Additionally, this study is immediately applicable to Untied States music festivals. The findings were drawn directly from the perspectives and experiences of event organizers, and the strategies are designed to be specifically applied to their sustainable event management work.

Abstract:
The papers submitted for this PhD by publication represent research centered on event experiences and their design, management and impact. They are the result of research projects that have produced seven published peer-reviewed papers and one book. The body of work has made an original, significant and sustained contribution towards the development of an emerging field of study in events. The work has made a major contribution towards furthering understanding of the human experience that results from the management of events, their design and their impact. At the heart of this submission is a consideration for how events are experienced and what factors and components contribute to the depth of that experience. The majority of papers analyses and reflects upon the construction of experience settings (their design) and essentially seeks knowledge to identify the variables that shape any experience of events (Ryan, 2012). In doing so the research undertaken has embraced a less restrictive set of methodologies usually afforded by statistical exercises in favour of a more embodied, immersive and participative approach. This has included not only observation and autoethnography, but also reflection on that which has been observed. In turn this reflection and analysis has drawn upon a range of theories and models to advance understanding of the social occasions that we call events where human interactions with the designed programme and environment illicit a range of responses that may culminate in a memorable and unique moment in time. The research therefore touches upon the emotional response to event experiences, the study and interpretation of the meaning of events, and notably their signification to an intended audience. In the course of this research I have evaluated and reflected upon the study and practice of event management across a range of event types and genres. Seeking to initially clarify the role of design in creating event experience led me to questioning the paradigmatic model for event management and resulted in the development of an alternative consideration for event planning and management - Event Experience Design Framework (EEDF). Unlike existing models this places design as the central and pivotal driving force that inhabits all areas of the event management process and upon which all events should then be based. The contribution of this body of work can therefore be summarised as follows: 1. Development of a paradigmatic concept that places design as the central and essential practice that underpins the planned event experience. 2. Theoretical positioning of how designing event experiences impacts on stakeholders 3. Recognition and application of theoretical models and tools relevant to event design and creativity, and further use of conceptual models to analyse experiential outcomes 4. Identification and awareness of the broader socio-cultural impact of planned events This submission provides evidentiary material that I have made a positive and meaningful contribution to raising the profile of events through research, teaching and learning by an acknowledged excellence in events management education and as a recognised (and first) National Teaching Fellow in Events. Furthermore, the submission provides a reflection on this research and development that has enabled me to make such a pivotal contribution to the field. It concludes with an outline of plans for the future.

Li, Chunhui. "Performance management of event processing systems." Thesis, Aston University, 2014. http://publications.aston.ac.uk/25175/.

Full text
Abstract:
This thesis is a study of performance management of Complex Event Processing (CEP) systems. Since CEP systems have distinct characteristics from other well-studied computer systems such as batch and online transaction processing systems and database-centric applications, these characteristics introduce new challenges and opportunities to the performance management for CEP systems. Methodologies used in benchmarking CEP systems in many performance studies focus on scaling the load injection, but not considering the impact of the functional capabilities of CEP systems. This thesis proposes the approach of evaluating the performance of CEP engines’ functional behaviours on events and develops a benchmark platform for CEP systems: CEPBen. The CEPBen benchmark platform is developed to explore the fundamental functional performance of event processing systems: filtering, transformation and event pattern detection. It is also designed to provide a flexible environment for exploring new metrics and influential factors for CEP systems and evaluating the performance of CEP systems. Studies on factors and new metrics are carried out using the CEPBen benchmark platform on Esper. Different measurement points of response time in performance management of CEP systems are discussed and response time of targeted event is proposed to be used as a metric for quality of service evaluation combining with the traditional response time in CEP systems. Maximum query load as a capacity indicator regarding to the complexity of queries and number of live objects in memory as a performance indicator regarding to the memory management are proposed in performance management of CEP systems. Query depth is studied as a performance factor that influences CEP system performance.

Wang, Miao. "Risk analysis for flood event management." Thesis, University of Newcastle upon Tyne, 2015. http://hdl.handle.net/10443/2893.

Full text
Abstract:
Flood risk management seeks to reduce flood consequences and probability by considering a wide range of options that include non-structural measures such as flood event management. Quantitative flood risk analysis has provided a powerful tool to support appraisal and investment in engineered flood defence. However, analysing the risks and benefits of non-structural measures have been limited making it difficult to compare the benefits of a wide range of options on a shared assessment platform. A major challenge to understand the performance of non-structural measures during a flood event is the complexity of analysing the human responses in the system that determines the successful operation of flood event management. Here presents a risk analysis approach that couples a multi-agent simulation of individual and organizational behaviour with a hydrodynamic model. The model integrates remotely sensed information on topography, buildings and road networks with empirical survey data and information on local flood event management strategies to fit characteristics of specific communities. The model has been tested in Towyn, North Wales, and subsequently used to analyse the effectiveness of flood event management procedures, including flood warning and evacuation procedures in terms of potential loss of life , economic damages and the identification of roads susceptible to congestion. The potential loss of life increases according to the magnitude of a storm surge (e.g. 11 for 1 in 100 years surges as opposed to 94 for 1 in 1000 surges). Providing 3 hours flood warning can reduce this by 67% if individuals take appropriate action. A global sensitivity analysis shows that hydrodynamic processes are only responsible for 50% of the variance in expected loss of life because actions taken by individuals and society can greatly influence the outcome. The model can be used for emergency planners to improve flood response in a flood event.

Abstract:
The hosting of mega events encapsulates different opportunities and benefits for host countries or regions. Event management constitutes one of the most exciting and fastest growing forms of leisure, business and tourism-related phenomena. Their special appeal stems from the limited duration and innate uniqueness of each event, which distinguishes them from permanent institutions and built attractions. Events and festivals have the ability to attract a large number of visitors for a specific time period to a specific destination. The frequency of events is evident for the success of a tourism destination. The hosting of mega events requires a detailed process of bidding for international events. This study focused on the bidding process for hosting such events, with specific reference to the role of government in the bidding process. The value of this study lies in the key success factors that were identified by a comparative analysis that was done between the FlFA 2006 Soccer Bid between Germany and South Africa. Although South Africa's bid was unsuccessful, the country still delivered an outstanding technical bid and is regarded as a serious competitor for future events. South Africa already proved itself, through hosting the 1995 Rugby World Cup and the 2003 Cricket World Cup. Two major recommendations were made, including a FlFA World Cup Information Centre and a checklist for successful bidding. The FlFA World Cup Information Centre's aim must be to provide and disseminate information to communities. This will not only encourage community involvement. but also create support for the event. The marketing programme, staff information, maintenance plans, ecological balance, budget concerns, event evaluation process, the role of the organising committee and security matters are the key factors in developing such a centre. The checklist for creating a successful bid cover a number of issues regarding operational planning and management.

Abstract:
Modern IT infrastructures are constructed by large scale computing systems and administered by IT service providers. Manually maintaining such large computing systems is costly and inefficient. Service providers often seek automatic or semi-automatic methodologies of detecting and resolving system issues to improve their service quality and efficiency. This dissertation investigates several data-driven approaches for assisting service providers in achieving this goal. The detailed problems studied by these approaches can be categorized into the three aspects in the service workflow: 1) preprocessing raw textual system logs to structural events; 2) refining monitoring configurations for eliminating false positives and false negatives; 3) improving the efficiency of system diagnosis on detected alerts. Solving these problems usually requires a huge amount of domain knowledge about the particular computing systems. The approaches investigated by this dissertation are developed based on event mining algorithms, which are able to automatically derive part of that knowledge from the historical system logs, events and tickets. In particular, two textual clustering algorithms are developed for converting raw textual logs into system events. For refining the monitoring configuration, a rule based alert prediction algorithm is proposed for eliminating false alerts (false positives) without losing any real alert and a textual classification method is applied to identify the missing alerts (false negatives) from manual incident tickets. For system diagnosis, this dissertation presents an efficient algorithm for discovering the temporal dependencies between system events with corresponding time lags, which can help the administrators to determine the redundancies of deployed monitoring situations and dependencies of system components. To improve the efficiency of incident ticket resolving, several KNN-based algorithms that recommend relevant historical tickets with resolutions for incoming tickets are investigated. Finally, this dissertation offers a novel algorithm for searching similar textual event segments over large system logs that assists administrators to locate similar system behaviors in the logs. Extensive empirical evaluation on system logs, events and tickets from real IT infrastructures demonstrates the effectiveness and efficiency of the proposed approaches.

Abstract:
The aim of this research was to discuss about event management theory and how the Liiga (the major ice hockey league in Finland) team organisations could use this theory to improve their home game events. This topic has been divided into two research questions from which the first discusses the current situation and the other gives suggestions for future improvements for the Liiga team organisations. This research is conducted as a master’s theses and it has been conducted in years 2014 to 2016. In order to understand the research topic the general theory of event management has been told from the sporting event point of view. This theory has been divided into two different sections which are the five stages of event management and the operational strategies of event management. Answers for the research questions have been search with a qualitative research and its methods of interview and questionnaire, observation and content analysis. These methods and the way these have been used in this research are introduced after the event management theory. The data collected with the selected qualitative research methods has been introduced as empirical findings. These empirical findings are introduced a research method at a time and in a same order as the data has been collected. After introducing the collected data it has been carefully analysed. The analysis have also been divided into two section from which the first answers to the first research question concerning the current situation and the other the second questions concerning the future improvement that could be done. The first part of analysis has been made in a same chronological order as the event management theory has been written in order it to be easy to compere these two to each other. In the end the conclusions of this research and its research questions are introduced. Also the knowledge which this research is offering for the tourism industry and for its readers have been discussed. This are also a lot of different ways how this research could be continued and made further and these ways have been discussed as well. Last but not least the research has been viewed critically and the quality of it has been questioned.

Abstract:
Dissertation submitted in partial fulfilment of the requirements for the degree Master of Technology: Business Information Systems in the Faculty of Business at the Cape Peninsula University of Technology 2013
Event management is a very competitive field; therefore, event managers must work hard to distinguish themselves from other event management companies. One way of doing this is by using event management software to provide a holistic service which allows for better efficiency in the workplace. Technology is constantly changing; therefore it is imperative to keep abreast of trends in technology in order to improve one’s business and services. As an event manager, one should also consider what it takes in order to organise a successful event. The internationally accredited Event Management Body of Knowledge (EMBOK) has identified several areas that are crucial for an event manager to constantly control and manage in order to create an exceptional event, and these domain areas encompass a set of guidelines to ensure successful event projects. However, one should determine if the software is able to assist event managers with all the necessary features and functions required to organise a successful event as per the outline from EMBOK. The research aimed to analyse the software in terms of its capabilities and compare it to the EMBOK guidelines. The aim of the study was to further identify whether the software is able to complete all the tasks outlined by EMBOK and if not, what else would be needed to fill the gaps. The research also reviewed what impact the software has on events, that is, how it assists or improves tasks conducted or how it does not assist or becomes problematic in accomplishing the various phases and tasks. Qualitative research was selected as the appropriate method in order to gain an understanding of the events managers’ point of view with regards to the software. The research required detailed descriptions and narratives of the software as well as the experiences and opinions of the user. For this reason it was determined that qualitative research would best suit the needs of the research. In order to get detailed answers a semi-structured in-depth interview guide was used and the answers transcribed in order to analyse and get results. The software was selected based on its international usability and because of its use by South African government departments such as the Department of International Relations and Cooperation (DIRC) and the Department of Trade and Industry (DTI). The Cape Town-based individuals from the software’s client list were contacted and selected to participate in the study. The research was conducted with five representatives with previous experience of the software in the events industry in Cape Town. The interview guides were compiled with Likert-scale questions and open-ended questions. The questions were carefully compiled to link the functionality of the software and the criteria as identified by EMBOK. The answers were recorded and transcribed to analyse and determine the opinions of the representatives on the functionality and comprehensiveness of the software to be used for event management. The interviews established that the move towards technology is preferable as it creates efficiency in the workplace. The software assists in alleviating the workload of event managers; however, the interviews also indicated that the software does not always fulfil the requirements for all the tasks. Several tasks required the use of combinations of software; in some instances, the manager preferred to do the task manually. It was concluded that the software does not provide the level of flexibility required in event management, which is a vital criterion, owing to the field’s changing nature.

Abstract:
This research examines the impact of inter-organisational relationships of public sector events agencies on events tourism strategy making within Australian state/territories. The global expansion of events tourism and sustained interest in networks and relationships as conduits to strategy underpin this topic. Although public sector institutional arrangements exist in many countries including Australia to develop events tourism, there is no known empirical research of inter-organisational relationships for strategy making in this domain. Against this background, the research problem of the thesis is: How and why do inter-organisational relationships of public sector events agencies impact upon events tourism strategy making within Australian states and territories? Based on a review of themes and issues within the two parent theories of tourism strategy and inter-organisational relationships, a theoretical framework and four research issues are developed. These issues are: RI 1: How does the public sector institutional environment impact upon events tourism strategies and the inter-organisational relationships that shape them, and why? RI 2: How do events tourism strategy forms and processes reflect and influence events agencies' inter-organisational relationships, and why? RI 3: What are the forms and characteristics of events agencies' inter- organisational relationships for shaping events tourism strategies, and why? RI 4: What are the incentives and disincentives for events agencies to engage in inter-organisational relationships for events tourism strategy making, and why? Because this research explores a new field within events tourism, it adopts a realism paradigm to uncover the 'realities' of events agencies' inter-organisational relationships and strategies. Two qualitative methodologies are adopted: the convergent interview technique (Carson, Gilmore, Perry, and Gronhaug 2001b; Dick 1990) and multiple case research (Perry 1998, 2001; Yin 1994). The convergent interviews serve to explore and refine the theoretical framework and the four research issues investigated in the multiple case research. These cases are represented by the inter-organisational relationships of events agencies in six Australian states/territories. Findings about the public sector institutional environment (research issue 1) show that events tourism strategies are influenced by different public sector policies and influences, the organisational arrangements for events tourism, the roles of events agencies and the lifecycle phase of events tourism in each state/territory. In relation to events tourism strategy forms (research issue 2), reactive/proactive strategies that respond to or address arising events or opportunities are common with a limited application of formal planning strategies. However, events agencies' strategy processes do reflect a range of strategic activities of importance. Inter-organisational relationships of events agencies (research issue 3) are typified by informal, government-led networks that influence, rather than develop, events tourism strategies. Finally, the importance of a number of incentives and disincentives for agencies to engage in inter-organisational relationships for events tourism strategy making is established. The final conceptual model depicts the themes within all four research issues and links between them to address the research problem. The conclusions of this research make a major contribution to events tourism theory and build upon theories in tourism strategy and inter-organisational relationships. Further research opportunities are presented by these conclusions and the conceptual model which may be explored using other methodologies or alternative research contexts. Practical implications of the research for policy makers and agency executives relate to policy-strategy linkages, public sector organisational arrangements for events tourism, strategy forms and processes and frameworks to engage stakeholders in inter-organisational relationships for strategy making. Knowledge of incentives and disincentives for these inter-organisational relationships also provides a platform for events agencies to reflect upon and revise their modes of governance for events tourism strategy making.

Thesis (M. Eng. in Logistics)--Massachusetts Institute of Technology, Engineering Systems Division, 2003.

This thesis project explores the possibility to apply project management techniques, specifically critical path method, and PERT, to supply chain event management. The idea behind the project is to create a framework for putting supply chain events into a broader supply chain context and assessing their criticality. Such a framework can then be utilized as a starting point for supply chain event management software applications. The problem has been approached from a "micro" point of view, with the analysis and PERT modeling of a single order fulfillment process, and from a "macro" point of view, with the analysis and a very simple model of the inventory itself. Finally, there are important factors that can drive the development and adoption of such systems in the future, including a higher level of supply chain informatization, removal of inter-and intra-company communication barriers, and better software integration technologies to effectively link all the element of the supply chain network.

Abstract:
As conclusões extraídas do presente trabalho permitem informar as futuras organizações de eventos similares, identificando características específicas à realidade do seu planeamento, gestão e validando os seus impactos benéficos, quer de natureza económica, quer regional e social; Impact perceived by the organization of the XXI National Open Summer Swimming Masters Championships in Reguengos de Monsaraz Abstract: The main objective of this study is to evaluate the perception of the economic and social impacts of the XXI Event Open Summer Master Swimming Championship. The methodology based on a case study was adopted, analysing the XXI National Open Summer Master Swimming Championship, held in Reguengos de Monsaraz. Interviews were addressed to those responsible and collaborators for the organization of the event, president of the Municipality of Reguengos de Monsaraz, responsible technician of the Portuguese Swimming Federation, responsible for the organization and collaboration of the Alentejo Swimming Association, responsible for Municipal Swimming Pools, responsible for clubs who participated in the Event and athletes who have participated since the first Swimming Master. The results show that the management of the event, involved as expected, a strategic, specific and administrative planning process, which was mainly by the responsibility of FPN. The economic impacts were continuously validated, either directly, in terms of increased income for local entrepreneurs (restaurants and accommodation) and to the local community (hiring human resources to support the event), or indirectly, at the level the increased attractiveness of the region which, in the long term, will benefit from the increased visibility provided. Social impacts were observed in the community, which subsequently led to an increase in the demand for swimming activities at the region, especially by the elderly population. Conclusions drawn from this work, generate more competence for the organization of similar events, identifying specific characteristics to the reality of their planning and management and validating their beneficial impacts, whether of an economic, regional, or social nature.

Abstract:

Organizations of all types and their computer networks are constantly under threat of attack. While the overall detection time of these attacks is getting shorter, the average detection time of weeks to months allows the attacker ample time to potentially cause damage to the organization. Current detection methods are primarily signature based and typically rely on analyzing the available data sources in isolation. Any analysis of how the individual data sources relate to each other is usually a manual process, and will most likely occur as a forensic endeavor after the attack identification occurs via other means. The use of graph theory and the graph databases built to support its application can provide a repeatable and automated analysis of the data sources and their relationships. By aggregating the individual data sources into a graph database based on a model that supports the data types and relationships, database queries can extract information relevant to the detection of attack behavior within the network. The work in this Praxis shows how the graph model and database queries will reduce the overall time to detection of a successful attack by enabling defenders to understand better how the data elements and what they represent are related.

Increased operational demands on Navy vessels extend time at sea and service life, making the accurate prediction of catastrophic failures increasingly challenging. The high value of these capital assets puts great pressure on designers and decision-makers as they work towards preventing such failures while balancing both engineering and material cost. The current method for the quantification of extreme events is direct Monte Carlo simulation supplemented by complex statistical models. When such models are not sufficiently bound by physics-based simulation, the noise of statistical uncertainty quickly overpowers the response predictions for rare events. This thesis builds on previous work at the MIT Stochastic Analysis and Non-linear Dynamics (SAND) lab for the quantification of extreme events using wave groups. By separating the event probability from the physics models, we are able to capture rare events in ship motion and loading conditions for a modest computational cost. Improvements to the wave groups methodology ensured the slope and amplitude of the incident waves reflected the waves encountered in a given wave spectrum. The remaining discussion explores the value of a near-real-time risk analysis tools in reference to ship design and ship operations, with unique application to Navy and commercial vessels.

Abstract:
Computer networks produce tremendous amounts of event-based data that can be collected and managed to support an increasing number of new classes of pervasive applications. Examples of such applications are network monitoring and crisis management. Although the problem of distributed event-based management has been addressed in the non-pervasive settings such as the Internet, the domain of pervasive networks has its own characteristics that make these results non-applicable. Many of these applications are based on time-series data that possess the form of time-ordered series of events. Such applications also embody the need to handle large volumes of unexpected events, often modified on-the-fly, containing conflicting information, and dealing with rapidly changing contexts while producing results with low-latency. Correlating events across contextual dimensions holds the key to expanding the capabilities and improving the performance of these applications. This dissertation addresses this critical challenge. It establishes an effective scheme for complex-event semantic correlation. The scheme examines epistemic uncertainty in computer networks by fusing event synchronization concepts with belief theory. Because of the distributed nature of the event detection, time-delays are considered. Events are no longer instantaneous, but duration is associated with them. Existing algorithms for synchronizing time are split into two classes, one of which is asserted to provide a faster means for converging time and hence better suited for pervasive network management. Besides the temporal dimension, the scheme considers imprecision and uncertainty when an event is detected. A belief value is therefore associated with the semantics and the detection of composite events. This belief value is generated by a consensus among participating entities in a computer network. The scheme taps into in-network processing capabilities of pervasive computer networks and can withstand missing or conflicting information gathered from multiple participating entities. Thus, this dissertation advances knowledge in the field of network management by facilitating the full utilization of characteristics offered by pervasive, distributed and wireless technologies in contemporary and future computer networks.

Abstract:
The meeting and conference industry is very varied, and conference designers strive to optimise the resources used during an event or conference. During several years of working in the conference and meeting industry the author found that some tasks associated with meetings and conferences are still handled manually. It was from the experience of these sometimes labour-intensive tasks that the idea sprung to introduce computer support. This thesis describes the development of a prototype in a mobile environment using Near Field Communication (NFC) as an identification token for an attendee at a conference or meeting. The conference centre where the conference and meeting scenario incorporated in the developed prototype is gathered from the author’s current place of work. As the prototype is developed as proof-of-concept it is not complete and needs to be developed further in order to be of use for a conference designer. The gain in reduced work can in some cases be quite intuitive, and in some other cases needs to be analysed. During the development of the prototype the author gained new knowledge in how mobile operating systems (OS) can differ compared to developing for OS aimed for stationary computers. One key difference was that the OS could at any time close or pause the application in order to free or save resources, such as memory or power, this behaviour needs to be managed and taken into consideration when developing for mobile OS. The author also learned how to use NFC and develop applications using NFC with an attendee-driven approach, which is important as the meeting industry strives to reduce the use of resources by making it more attendee-driven. The main idea behind the attendee-driven approach is to shift the tasks that are normally handled by the arranger of the conference, over to the conference attendee, e.g, the conference attendee books his or her lecture online, reducing the need of staff at a reservation call center.

Abstract:
The Event-driven computing paradigm, also known as trigger computing, is widely used in computer technology. Computer systems, such as database systems, introduce trigger mechanism to reduce repetitive human intervention. With the growing complexity of industrial use case requirements, independent and isolated triggers cannot fulfil the demands any more. Fortunately, an independent trigger can be triggered by the result produced by other triggered actions, and that enables the modelling of complex use cases, where the chains or graphs that consist of triggers are called workflows. Therefore, workflow construction and manipulation become a must for implementing the complex use cases. As the developing platform of this study, VISION Cloud is a computational storage system that executes small programs called storles as independent computation units in the storage. Similar to the trigger mechanism in database systems, storlets are triggered by specific events and then execute computations. As a result, one storlet can also be triggered by the result produced by other storlets, and it is called connections between storlets. Due to the growing complexity of use case requirements, an urgent demand is to have starlet workflow management supported in VISION system. Furthermore, because of the existence of connections between storlets in VISION, problems as non-termination triggering and unexpected overwriting appear as side-effects. This study develops a management service that consists of an analysis engine and a multi-level visualization interface. The analysis engine checks the connections between storlets by utilizing the technology of automatic theorem proving and deterministic finite automaton. The involved storlets and their connections are displayed in graphs via the multi-level visualization interface. Furthermore, the aforementioned connection problems are detected with graph theory algorithms. Finally, experimental results with practical use case examples demonstrate the correctness and comprehensiveness of the service. Algorithm performance and possible optimization are also discussed. They lead the way for future work to create a portable framework of event-driven workflow management services.

Leon, Ryan James. "An Event Management Framework to Aid Solution Providers in Cybersecurity." Thesis, The George Washington University, 2018. http://pqdtopen.proquest.com/#viewpdf?dispub=10745141.

Full text
Abstract:

Cybersecurity event management is critical to the successful accomplishment of an organization’s mission. To put it in perspective, in 2016 Symantec tracked over 700 global adversaries and recorded events from 98 million sensors (Aimoto et al., 2017). Studies show that in 2015, more than 55% of the cyberattacks on government operation centers were due to negligence and the lack of skilled personnel to perform network security duties including the failure to properly identify events (Ponemon, 2015a). Practitioners are charged to perform as first responders to any event that affects the network. Inconsistencies and errors that occur at this level can determine the outcome of an event.

In a time when 91% of Americans believe they have lost control over how information is collected and secured, there is nothing more dangerous than thinking new technology is not vulnerable to attacks (Rainie, 2016). Assailants target those with weak security postures who are unprepared, distracted or lack fundamental elements to identify significant events and secure the environment.

Under executive order, to address these concerns organizations such as the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) and International Organization of Standards (ISO) developed cybersecurity frameworks, which have been widely accepted as industry standards. These standards focus on business drivers to guide cybersecurity activities and risks within critical infrastructure. It outlines a set of cybersecurity activities, references, and outcomes that can be used to align its cyber activities with business requirements at a high-level.

This praxis explores the solution provider’s role in and method of securing environments through their event management practices. Solution providers are a critical piece of proper event management. They are often contracted to provide solutions that adhere to a NIST type framework with little to no guidance. There are supportive documents and guides for event management but nothing substantive like the Cybersecurity Framework and ISO 27001 has been adopted. Using existing processes and protocols an event management framework is proposed that can be utilized to properly manage events and aid solution providers in their cybersecurity mission.

Knowledge of event management was captured through subject matter expertise and supported through literature review and investigation. Statistical methods were used to identify deficiencies in cyber operations that would be worth addressing in an event management framework.

Abstract:

Malicious insider activities on military networks can pose a threat to military operations. Early identification of malicious insiders assists in preventing significant damage and reduces the overall insider threat to military networks. Security Information and Event Management (SIEM) tools can be used to identify potential malicious insider activities. SIEM tools provide the ability to normalize and correlate log data from multiple sources on networks. Personnel background investigations and administrative action information can provide data sources for SIEM tools in order to assist in early identification of the insider threat by correlating this information with the individuals online activities. This thesis provides background information on the components and functionality of SIEM tools, summarizes historic insider threat cases to determine common motivations, provides an overview of military security investigations and administrative actions in order to determine candidate sources for SIEM correlation, and provides an overview of common methods of data exfiltration by malicious insiders. This information is then used to develop an example SIEM architecture that highlights how the military can use a SIEM to identify and prevent potential internal insider threats by correlating an individuals network activities with background investigation and administrative action information.

Abstract:
Globalisation has come as a double-edged blade for information technology (IT) companies; providing growth opportunities and yet posing many challenges. Software development is moving from a monolithic model to a distributed approach, where many entities and organisations are involved in the development process. Risk management an important area to deal with all the kinds of technical and social issues within companies planning and programming schedules, and this new way of working requires more attention to be paid to the temporal, socio-cultural and control aspects than before. Multinational companies like IBM have begun to consider how to address the distributed nature of its projects across the globe. With outlets across the globe, the company finds various people of different cultures, languages and ethics working on a single and bigger IT projects from different locations. Other IT companies are facing the same problems, despite there being many kinds of approaches available to handle risk management in large scale IT companies. IBM commissioned the Distributed Risk Management Process (DRiMaP) model as a suitable solution. This model focused on the collaborative and on-going control aspects, and paid attention to the need for risk managers, project managers and management to include risk management into all phases of projects and the business cycle. The authors of the DRiMaP model did not subject it to extensive testing. This research sets out to evaluate, improve and extend the model process and thereby develop a new and dynamic approach to distributed information systems development. To do this, this research compares and contrasts the model with other risk management approaches. An Evolutionary Model is developed, and this is subjected to empirical testing through a hybrid constructive research approach. A survey is used to draw out the observations of project participants, a structured interview gathered the opinions of project experts, a software tool was developed to implement the model, and SysML and Monte Carlo methods were applied to this to simulate the functioning of the model. The Evolutionary Model was found to partially address the shortcomings of the DRiMaP model, and to provide a valuable platform for the development of an enterprise risk management solution.

Abstract:
This master thesis is a follow-up to my bachelor thesis which deals with analysis and design of web application for a company Wedding in Prague Inc. Area of interest for this master thesis is a review of analysis and design of application and its implementation. The main aim of the thesis is to create an online wedding application for this company that organizes and plans weddings. The applications purpose is to provide an optimal informatics support for priority processes of the company. To achieve the aim, it was necessary to review analysis of the application including a review of requirements. And because of the scale of these requirements it was necessary to prioritize these requirements. After that I did a review of original design and then I implemented and tested priority functionality of the application. This topic was chosen because the company needed informatics support of existing processes and needed to provide its customers with wedding pages. These wedding pages will be used for wedding administration and providing wedding participants with information about oncoming wedding. Because no suitable application was found on market it was necessary to develop this application. Firstly, the thesis includes a definition of a destination event management and a description of companys processes. After that there is a review of requirements, use case diagrams and a design of user interface. The next chapter focuses on a review of an application design. This includes class diagram, component diagram and a database design. Chapter after that includes implementation of application using framework ASP.NET and it also includes testing cases for this application. The last chapter includes a user manual which describes the functionality of the applications. Contribution of this thesis is to implement and to test a web application which includes a priority functionality (60% of all functionality). This enables easy administration of all organized weddings. Also, it will help expand reputation of the company.

Abstract:
Thesis (MPhil)--University of Stellenbosch, 2005.
ENGLISH ABSTRACT: Reflecting a general trend in modern society, the world of sport has become information driven, with effective information management becoming an essential part of all sports organisations and sporting activities. The sophistication oflarge, multi-sport events - mega-games - such as the Olympic Games and Commonwealth Games demand a high standard of information management to help ensure the smooth running of such events. This is also true of the managing of national teams participating in them. In this thesis a model of an information management system (IMS) is developed for managing certain types of information in such events and the national team participating in them. The model is based on two conceptual frameworks: Intellectual capital, and secondly the information management cycle. The model is then tested using a number of case studies where a specific information management system was used to manage the information of different sports teams and events. The degree to which the information management system was effectively implemented in each case is evaluated and the results used to measure the correctness and accuracy of the model. Lastly suggestions are given as to how the model can be improved in view of the case study findings, and what the future role of information management in sports events may look like in light of the results.
