Abstract:
Cycling as a competitive sport actually preceded the invention of our familiar pedalled chain-driven two-wheeled device by almost two decades. Some traditionalists consider that cycle sport should be confined to the conventional iconic drop-handlebar ‘racing cycle’ in either its fixed-wheel guise on the track or its multi-geared superficially similar cousin used in road racing. The evolution of cycling as an Olympic event gives the lie to this narrow view and is a metaphor for the development of the sport....

Abstract:
Most disasters occur with little or no warning, which emphasizes the importance of being prepared for disasters. This chapter will focus on the organizational steps needed to provide disaster response and operational flexibility, with an emphasis on the importance of a multidisciplinary team approach in the preparation needed to deal with and care patients from for a multiple-casualty event (MCE) following a disaster. Process control issues related to the management of a MCE, such as forward deployment of medical personnel to the trauma bay and emergency room, the establishment of a chain of command to limit chaos, patient flow, and information gathering, will be discussed.

Silverstein, Adam J. Why Did Mordecai Refuse to Bow? Oxford University Press, 2018. http://dx.doi.org/10.1093/oso/9780198797227.003.0008.

Full text
Abstract:
In this chapter, it is argued that a pivotal episode in Esther, Mordecai’s refusal to bow to Haman, is to be read literarily, as a topos, rather than literally, as a historical event. Drawing on materials from the ancient Near East, the Hebrew Bible, the New Testament, Late Antiquity, the Qur’an, and the Islamic era, it is shown that Mordecai’s refusal to bow to Haman is but one link in a very long chain of comparable episodes in Near and Middle Eastern literature. Furthermore, in tracing this topos through history, we are able to cast new light on the Qur’anic passages in which Satan (“Iblis”) refuses to bow to the newly created Adam.

Monaghan, Nicola. 2. Actus reus. Oxford University Press, 2018. http://dx.doi.org/10.1093/he/9780198811824.003.0002.

Full text
Abstract:
Without assuming prior legal knowledge, books in the Directions series introduce and guide readers through key points of law and legal debate. Questions, diagrams, and exercises help readers to engage fully with each subject and check their understanding as they progress. This chapter discusses the actus reus elements of a criminal offence. The actus reus of an offence may involve an act or omission (conduct crimes); certain consequences being caused (result crimes); or the existence of surrounding circumstances (‘state of affairs’ crimes); it must be voluntarily performed. There is generally no liability for an omission to act. There are five exceptions: special relationship; voluntary assumption of responsibility; supervening fault; contractual duty or public office; and statutory duty. Where the defendant is charged with a ‘result’ crime, the prosecution must prove causation. An intervening event will break the chain of causation and the actus reus will not be established.

Kahn, Laura. Who's in Charge? Praeger, 2009. http://dx.doi.org/10.5040/9798216035480.

Full text
Abstract:
A detailed exploration of leadership problems that can develop during public health crises such as the anthrax attacks, SARS, and Mad Cow disease. An imminent threat to the public health, such as the swine flu outbreak, is no time for a muddled chain of command and contradictory decision making.Who's In Charge? Leadership during Epidemics, Bioterror Attacks, and Other Public Health Crisesexplores the crucial relationships between political leaders, public health officials, journalists, and others to see why leadership confusion develops. Who's In Charge?begins by looking at the overarching issues of leadership, public health administration, and the threats of bioterrorism. It then examines five recent emergencies—the 2001 anthrax attacks and 1993 cryptosporidium outbreak in the United States, the 2003 SARS outbreak in Toronto, the 2001 foot-and-mouth disease crisis, and the decade-long battle against Mad Cow Disease in the U.K. A perfect text for schools in public health, or as a reference for elected officials at every level of government, the book shows how each event developed step-by-step to pinpoint specific leadership issues. Engaging and absorbing, the work presents official reports, medical literature, first-person accounts from officials and journalists, and discussions of the role of law enforcement and the military during health care emergencies.
