Abstract:
AbstractNurse educators are required to routinely evaluate students. While there is a plethora of information in the educational literature about how to write exams, develop rubrics, or evaluate clinical performance, there is a paucity of research related to teachers’ experiences of evaluation. Using a Heideggerian hermeneutical approach, this study sought to answer: (1) what are the experiences of nurse educators evaluating nursing students? and (2) what do these evaluative experiences mean to the nurse educator? Thirty nurse educators from 19 undergraduate programs were interviewed for this study. Implications for nurse educators are discussed.

Abstract:
This study found divergence in how online journalists and student-audiences rated articles with varying popularity, as measured by audience metrics, and quality, as operationalized by winning a journalistic award. The findings revealed that while metrics and awards did not matter for young online news audiences, they were important for online journalists. But even among journalists, the importance of metrics and awards varied depending on whether the journalists were evaluating stories or their peers. For online journalists, popular stories were more newsworthy than those that were not. Awards did not influence their judgment of newsworthiness. But when evaluating the authors of the articles, online journalists rated authors of articles that won awards more favorably than authors of articles without awards. The popularity of stories did not matter in their evaluation of the authors.

Abstract:
A central dilemma of portfolio assessment is that as the richness of the data available to readers increases, so do the challenges involved in ensuring acceptable reliability among readers. Drawing on empirical and theoretical work in discourse analysis, ethnomethodology, and other fields, we argue that this dilemma results, in part, from the fact that readers cannot avoid forming the data of a portfolio into a pattern—a coherent "story" or "stories"—in order to evaluate it. Our article presents case studies of readers independently evaluating the same portfolios. We show that even readers who hold a shared vision of effective teaching and who cite much the same evidence can, nonetheless, develop significantly different "stories." Our analysis illustrates that some portfolios are more ambiguous than others and are thus more likely to result in such divergent readings. We argue that more fine grained understandings of portfolio ambiguities and disagreements between readers over "stories" can help us respond to the challenges posed by the rich data of portfolio assessments.

Vinson, Thomas M. "Congratulations, you've failed : evaluating collaborative projects through logical frameworks and stories." Thesis, London School of Economics and Political Science (University of London), 2007. http://etheses.lse.ac.uk/2043/.

Full text
Abstract:
To follow are 31 different retrospective logframes representing coded data from the NC-Exchange Community NETworker Demonstration. In my approach, I have taken interview data from project participants in three categories - NC-Exchange staff, NETworkers, and host organization directors - in addition to the original NETworker project proposal, and coded the information using the structure of the logical framework. In all, I have coded 26 separate items from different project sources. More specifically, I have placed each statement (or portion of a statement) made by the participants (or sentences, in the case of the proposal) into the box in the logframe matrix that I feel best represents the statement's meaning relative to its position within the overall system of the NETworker project. In this way, each statement becomes a disaggregated Wider Objective, Immediate Objective, Output, Activity, Indicator of Achievement, Means of Verification, or Assumption of the project. Because the individual retrospective logframes based on statements from the full interview transcripts are quite long (in some cases, more than 40 pages), I have also produced synthesized versions of several retrospective logframes in which I capture the main points in bullet-point format. In the long versions of the retrospective logframes, statements have been left intact; in the short versions, individual statements have been shortened or summarized into their key themes. In summarizing them, I have sought to leave the phrases in the same language used by the respondents in order to preserve the intended meanings. Statements that have not fit within the logframe categories have not been captured, though they remain accessible via the transcripts. For a more detailed description of the method, please refer to Appendix 6 of the thesis.

Conroy, Ashley. "Evaluating the Content and Tone of Mental Health News Coverage in Market 40: a Content Analysis of Selected Internet Stories From Las Vegas Broadcasting News Outlets." Thesis, University of North Texas, 2013. https://digital.library.unt.edu/ark:/67531/metadc407804/.

Full text
Abstract:
The purpose of this research study is to analyze mental health related content on the three network affiliated stations in Las Vegas, Nevada. Online web stories from broadcast stations are analyzed in terms of the content and tone. These areas of analysis relate directly to the mass communication theories agenda setting and framing. Historically, mental health news reports have included content and tone that together can potentially create and further stigmatizing sentiments about those with mental illnesses. This study utilizes a chi square test to determine if a relationship exists between the three network affiliated stations, four a priori coded mental health content categories, and a rating of the overall tone using a value dimensions scale. Supplemental analyses include frequency evaluations of what has been called “people-first” versus “non-people first” language. By analyzing mental health related content at these three stations in the Las Vegas market this study aims to add heuristic value to the study of mental health reporting in broadcast news. This study will allow for additional research to further test relationships between stations, content, and tone in the Las Vegas and other news markets. Ultimately, this study provides analysis and discussion of the important role of agenda setting and framing in the news industry as it relates to the coverage of mental health related content.

Full text
Abstract:
The purpose of this study was to investigate the extent to which the use of social stories that integrate a child’s particular restricted and repetitive behaviors results in differential social outcomes compared to the use of social stories that do not integrate restricted and repetitive behaviors. A non-concurrent multiple baseline experimental design across participants was used to examine the effects of two Social Story interventions on the frequency of appropriate social behaviors made by participants in a school setting. Field notes were also completed during each day of data collection in order to document the social context, events, activities, moods and behaviors of participants associated with each data collection session. Field notes also included the researcher’s thoughts, observations, and reflections on these variables. Overall, the intervention that included participants’ restricted interests within the Social Story had the effect of increasing participants’ appropriate social behaviors in contrast to the intervention that did not employ restricted interests. This research substantiates the principle that the restricted interests of children with ASD should not be viewed as a form of deficiency that needs to be eliminated. Rather, restricted interests should be viewed as reinforcing agents that increase children’s motivation to pursue activities that involve social initiations and interactions with their peers.

Abstract:
Key-value stores have a long history of providing users with a simple to use, yet powerful, interface to durable data storage. Useful for various purposes in their own right, they are also often used as storage layers in more complicated systems---such as fully featured database management systems. For these reasons, it is educational to investigate how such systems are actually architectured and implemented. This thesis looks in detail at two recently developed embedded key-value stores, Google LevelDB and Symas Lightning Memory-Mapped Database (LMDB). Both systems' overarching architecture and lower-level implementation details are considered to provide a thorough description of how they work. While exposing largely the same set of features, the systems are shown to take vastly different approaches to data storage. These techniques are described, and put in context with regards to existing ideas from the database management systems field. It is also shown how the designs impact performance in the face of different types of workloads.

Galjour, Chiasson Jenna L. "Stories of Principals’ Roles as a Result of High Stakes Teacher Evaluations in Louisiana." ScholarWorks@UNO, 2015. http://scholarworks.uno.edu/td/1965.

Full text
Abstract:
In 2010, the Louisiana legislature passed Act 54, a law that requires public school teachers to undergo a performance-based accountability evaluation. COMPASS (Clear, Overall Measure of Performance to Analyze and Support Success) asks principals to evaluate teachers using a rubric with components of Charlotte Danielson’s Framework for Teaching to evaluate teacher effectiveness (Act 54). Act 1, passed in 2012, ties Louisiana public school teacher’s pay and tenure to their score on COMPASS. Principals of Louisiana are now asked to evaluate teachers in a high stakes evaluation that is linked to teacher tenure and pay. A qualitative study using narrative research design was conducted to explore how principals described their roles as high-stakes evaluators through the implementation of COMPASS. Data was collected from seven participants in the form of in-depth interviews and each was recorded and transcribed for data analysis. Restorying and story mapping were used to compose narratives that describe the roles of the participants in their implementation of COMPASS. Using the theoretical frameworks of Contingency theory and Instructional Leadership theory, two roles emerged from their narratives: Instructional Coach and High Stakes Evaluator. The information gleaned from this study can help to inform future policy about possible issues with COMPASS in implementation as well as impact future practice for evaluators from the stories of the participants.

McCraw, Jenny. "Stories of the American South: A Usability Study of Learning Objects." Thesis, School of Information and Library Science, 2007. http://hdl.handle.net/1901/396.

Full text
Abstract:
This study presents the results of a usability test of reusable learning objects currently in development in the Instructional Services Department of the UNC-Chapel Hill University Library. The learning objects are Web-based learning modules that are part of a new project, Stories of the American South, and they aim to make digital primary source material more accessible by breaking it into manageable units and providing contextual information. Seven undergraduate students viewed three prototypes, each focused on a unique theme related to the history of the American South. The results suggested that the learning objects are generally usable in design and function, and participants’ responses to design and content were positive. Several changes are suggested to optimize the usability of the learning object prototypes, and further usability testing with other audiences is recommended.

O'Dell, Jade J. "Developmental Education Repeaters: Stories About Repetition." ScholarWorks@UNO, 2012. http://scholarworks.uno.edu/td/1470.

Full text
Abstract:
Developmental education students make up almost half of the community college population in the United States (Bettinger & Long, 2005). Approximately 42% of first-time freshmen at community colleges must enroll in at least one developmental education course in English, reading and/or math (NCES, 2010). Many developmental education students are unsuccessful in passing a developmental education course in their first and second attempts and retake the course sometimes five times before passing. There is substantial research on persistence among college students, but the research fails to link persistence to developmental education repeaters. My study sought to explore community college developmental education repeaters’ experiences with and stories about repetition in a reading course. My study was framed around developmental education and its students, course repeaters, and persistence. I used qualitative research methods with a narrative research design. Two methods of data collection included multiple one-on-one interviews and document collection. Four participants were selected from one community college in the New Orleans area, two who repeated and completed developmental reading upon their third attempt and two who were in the process of completing developmental reading a third time. Data analysis revealed six themes. The information gleaned from the inquiry may inform community college faculty practice with regard to not only reducing and preventing course repetition but also increasing persistence and retention of developmental education students.

Spjutare, Christian. "Aerodynamic Loads on External Stores - Saab 39 Gripen : Evaluation of CFD methods for estimating loads on external stores." Thesis, Linköping University, Applied Thermodynamics and Fluid Mechanics, 2009. http://urn.kb.se/resolve?urn=urn:nbn:se:liu:diva-54127.

Full text
Abstract:

External stores mounted on aircraft generate loads which need to be estimated before first takeoff. These loads can be measured in a wind tunnel but since the possible store configurations are basically endless, testing them all is neither economically feasible nor time efficient. Thus, scaling based on geometrical similarity is used. This can, however, be a crude method. Stores with similar geometrical properties can still behave in different ways due to aerodynamic interference caused by adjacent surfaces.

To improve the scaling performance, this work focuses on investigating two CFD codes, ADAPDT and Edge. The CFD simulations are used to derive the difference in aerodynamic coefficients, or the Δ-effect, between a reference store and the new untested store. The Δ-effect is then applied to an existing wind tunnel measurement of the reference store, yielding an estimation of the aerodynamic properties for the new store.

The results show that ADAPDT, using a coarse geometry representation, has large difficulties predicting the new store properties, even for a very simple store configuration on the aircraft. Therefore it is not suited to use as a scaling tool in its present condition. Edge on the other hand uses a more precise geometry representation and proves to deliver good estimations of the new store load behavior. Results are well balanced and mainly conservative. Some further work is needed to verify the performance but Edge is the recommended tool for scaling.

Abstract:
This publication results from the research work undertaken by the partner institutions involved in the KA3-ICT Project Transversal Lifelong Learning Programme, Learn about finding jobs from digital storytelling(143429-2008-LLP-RO-KA3-KA3MP), with the main purpose of enhancing graduates' employability possibilities. For graduating students looking for a job it is perhaps harder than ever to meet success on the job market. They must use every tool they know to express themselves and to reflect their knowledge, competences and skills. The book aims to explain the main aspects of using digital storytelling as a method for employability, career development, reflection, assessment, consultancy, presentation and communication. Through digital storytelling, students begin to comprehend how all the elements of writing a narrative work together and how to manipulate them for the best effects in readers and viewers. Also, sharing and evaluating digital stories among peers is an excellent way to foster self-expression and tolerance and to create an engaged community of learners.

Abstract:
Our thinking is grounded in our sensory, motor, affective, and interpersonal experience. Recent psychological studies confirmed that our cognition is not only embodied but also embedded since it arises from interactions with its social and cultural environments, which makes it possible to create image schemas and conceptual metaphors. Those schemas facilitate acting in everyday, routine situations, but make it difficult to depart from them since they are frames that limit our ability to see the alternatives. They are intricately linked to our world view and, therefore, resistant to changes because the latter threaten the feeling of security. This paper is aimed at evaluating people’s ability to change the existing schema. In the study, participants were asked to create a completely new story based on two well.known stories in which they had previously inserted the missing words. It was found that most participants exhibited considerable difficulties in departing from the formerly established schemas. Moreover, the emotionally loaded story proved to be more difficult to change.

Abstract:
Latent heat energy storage is one of the most efficient ways to store solar thermal energy. A system capable of receiving, absorbing, and collecting solar energy and storing it within a high temperature phase change material has been designed as part of a power system to be used on a low Earth orbit satellite. The system employs silicon as the phase change material and thermophotovoltaic cells for the conversion of stored heat energy into electrical energy. The effect of a void, in the phase change material, on system temperature and the associated thermophotovoltaic power production is determined through computational evaluation.
