Abstract:
The thoracic epidural analgesia (TEA) remains the standard gold for analgesic support in thoracic surgery, there is an interesting alternative to epidural analgesia, which is the paravertebral block (PVB). The aim in our study was to assess the value of performing a PVB in the management of postoperative pain in thoracic surgery compared to TEA. Methods: 80 patients were randomized to receive either epidural analgesia (n = 38, 10 cc bupivacaine 0.5% + 10 ϒ Sufentanyl then 10 cc Bupivacain 0.1% + 10 ϒ Sufentanyl via a PCA device) or PVB analgesia loss of resistance technique (n = 40, 10 cc bupivacaine 0.5% + 10 ϒ Sufentanyl via a PCA device). All patients received standard general anesthesia. The peri-operative parameters studied include standard measurement, EVA scale at rest and mobilization, use of morphinics. Results: there is a significant difference between the two groups and the incidents of puncture were significantly more important for the APDT group. The postoperative pain assessment by EVA did not show a significant difference between TEA and PVB Conclusion: the comparison of PVB to TPDA did not find significant difference in the efficacy of analgesia and the side effects. The BPV could be proposed as a first intention for postoperative analgesia in thoracic surgery.

Abstract:
AbstractWax precipitation has become a serious problem for the petroleum industry. The problem occurs when there is equilibrium disturbance on the pressure and temperature as well as crude oil composition. Wax deposits will eventually result in restriction of the fluid flow inside the pipeline, and severe deposition will cause blockage. The chemical additives currently being implemented in the industry have various limitations including the high cost and the irreversible impact it has on the environment. Therefore, the use of cheaper organic wax inhibitor obtained from crude palm oil (CPO) and crude palm kernel oil (CPKO) on the rheology and deposition of wax was investigated by using Chenor waxy crude oil from the Penyu basin, Pahang, Malaysia. To compare the efficiency of palm oil additives in inhibiting wax deposition, currently utilized chemical additives such as triethanolamine (TEA) and ethylene vinyl acetate (EVA) were also examined. The pour point of the crude oil was determined using SETA cloud & cryostat, while the rheological behavior of the crude was determined using a rotational Fann viscometer. The results obtained from this study reveal that CPO and CPKO could be used to improve the flow of crude oil, especially when 1 wt.% CPO or when 0.5 wt. % CPKO is used. It was also noted that the palm-based additives were much more effective at reducing the viscosity of the Chenor crude oil than the commercial wax inhibitor tested (TEA and EVA).

Abstract:
AbstractAmong the flow assurance problems that the petroleum industry faces, the deposition of paraffin waxes on to the wall of the pipeline is the most challenging. The challenge arises when the crude oil temperature decreases below the wax appearance temperature which prompts wax crystallization in the crude oil. An efficient method in remedying paraffin wax deposition is the utilization of chemical inhibitors. However, currently used chemical inhibitors are costly and environmentally harmful if a spillage occurs. Therefore, the use of biodegradable or environmentally friendly inhibitors as potential chemical inhibitors is being studied by various researchers. This study investigated oleic acid, poly (ethylene-co-vinyl acetate) (EVA) and triethanolamine (TEA) as inhibitors that perform based on the van der Waals intermolecular interaction between the main wax component molecule eicosane C20H42 using molecular dynamics simulations Material Studio 8.0 software package. In order to analyse the desired structural property which is the radial distribution function (RDF), COMPASS force field was used. The RDF and g(r) function portrayed the functional atoms which aid in inhibiting the agglomeration and crystallization of the wax crystal formation. The presence of a carbonyl oxygen in oleic acid plays a vital role to inhibit the wax formation through the van der Waals interaction between active hydrogen atoms in eicosane molecule. Therefore, the chances of wax inhibition in eicosane are higher by introducing oleic acid as an inhibitor as compared to EVA and TEA. The results were then validated experimentally utilizing a cold finger technique under static condition.

Abstract:

Abstract:
AbstractOne of the major concerns during the production of crude oil especially in tropical waters is the deposition of wax on to the walls of the pipeline. This is due to the low seabed temperatures which can be below the wax appearance temperature (WAT) which leads to wax depositing out through molecular diffusion. Currently, there are many methods to prevent and remedy wax deposition but most of these solutions pose a serious environmental threat and are expensive to produce. Hence, this research investigated the use of an organic and cheaper alternative by utilizing synthetic fatty acid esters such as oleic acid which has shown promising results in reducing the pour point of waxy crude oils. The solution that was used was of palm oil origin, crude palm oil (CPO) and crude palm kernel oil (CPKO) and was subsequently compared with the pour point depressant and wax inhibition efficiency of the current industry used inhibitors utilizing the SETA Pour Point and Cloud Point as well as the cold finger apparatus. It was observed that the palm oil inhibitors were highly effective at 1 wt.% due to the high composition of oleic acid present portraying a similar result to Triethanolamine (TEA) while Ethylene Vinyl Acetate (EVA) performed best at low concentration of 0.1 wt.% but deteriorates significantly as the concentration increases due to the polar end agglomerating among itself.

Abstract:
This study was conducted to evaluate the effects of tea powder in diets on the growth performance, meat quality, muscular amino acid, fatty acid profile, and serum biochemical indices of pigs. A total of 120 local Chinese pigs (Tibetan × Bama miniature pigs) were randomly assigned to five treatment groups, each with six pens and four pigs per pen. During a 60-day experiment, these groups of pigs were fed the normal diet and the diet supplemented with 1%, 2%, 4%, and 6% tea powder, respectively. The results showed that the supplementation of tea powder did not affect the growth performance of pigs. However, the dietary tea powder inclusion decreased (p < 0.05) the average fat thickness, total fat, and abdominal fat, and increased (p < 0.05) the total muscle as well. In addition, the dietary 2% tea powder decreased (p < 0.05) the muscle lightness (L*) and yellowness (b*). Compared with the control group, the dietary supplementation with 1%, 2%, and 4% tea powder raised (p < 0.05) the total amino acids (TAA) and essential amino acids (EAA), and dietary 4% and 6% tea powder increased (p < 0.05) the C20:5n3 in the muscle tissue. Furthermore, the serum lipid metabolism-related biochemical indices and mRNA expression levels were improved with the addition of tea powder. These results indicated that dietary tea powder might improve the carcass traits and meat quality of the Chinese native finishing pigs, but it does not affect their growth performance. Tea powder could be fully developed and reasonably applied as a dietary supplement.

Abstract:
The production and distribution of toasted mate tea in Brazil has increased, which has resulted in its greater consumption. Mate tea is obtained by roasting non-fermented erva-mate in order to produce toasted erva-mate or toasted mate tea. However, although the product is much appreciated, studies of its chemical composition and the concentration of polyphenols, particularly flavonols present in toasted mate tea, are few and often controversial. This paper elucidates some misunderstandings involving the nomenclature of erva-mate and toasted mate, and mainly provides an overview of the composition of polyphenols and antioxidant capacity of toasted mate tea and its raw material, erva-mate, in comparison with other teas, the compositions of which were found in the literature.

Abstract:
The Tea Industry in the Cholo and Mlanje districts of southern Nyasaland emerged during the 1930s under the shelter of the International Tea Regulation Scheme of 1933 which restricted exports by the world's leading producers. In contrast to its East African neighbours, Nyasaland's Tea Industry was well organized locally by the Nyasaland Tea Association and was effectively represented in Britain by its London Committee. Though having to accept restrictions on the planting of new tea, which occasioned some local controversy, the industry, in common with other tea-producing countries, benefited from the rising prices of the 1930s for which the Tea Regulations were largely responsible. By 1938 tea had become one of Nyasaland's few profitable industries. A seeming further advantage was the bulk buying scheme, at guaranteed prices, organized by the British Ministry of Food which lasted throughout the 1940s, but the industry's wartime performance was sluggish as a consequence of poor growing seasons combined with serious shortages of manpower and fertilizer. As a poor quality, low price producer facing chronic labour shortages, which prevented millions of pounds of tea from being picked, Nyasaland greeted with hostility Imperial decisions to withdraw eastern Africa from the International Tea Scheme in 1948, to end bulk buying in 1950, and generally to encourage the free expansion of production. Nyasaland's tea planters were told that henceforth they must face open competition.

Abstract:

Objective. Different products from vegetal origin have been studied due to the fact that they are known as sources of antioxidants, which could be an alternative to the synthetic antioxidants. This research investigated in vitro antioxidant activity of extracts of green and roasted mate (Ilex paraguariensis) and green tea (Camellia sinensis). Methodology. Soluble solid, total phenolics and antioxidant activity were analyzed in aqueous, ethanolic and etheric extracts. Two methods were used: free radical DPPH. (1,1-diphenyl-2-picryhydrazyl) quenching assay and ?-carotene/linoleic-acid oxidation model system. Data were analysed by the standard error estimative of the confidence intervals from average differences. Results. Aqueous and ethanolic extracts presented the highest content of soluble solids. Ethanolic extracts of green tea had the highest phenolic content (13,0mg/mL/EAC), while ethanolic extracts of roasted mate presented the lowest (3,4mg/mL/EAC). All results from DPPH. quenching assay were similar or superior to those found for BHT (synthetic antioxidant). The ?-carotene/linoleic acid oxidation model system showed that the aqueous extract of roasted mate (1,0mg/mL) had an average value 10.1% higher than aqueous extract of green mate, and the roasted mate ethanolic extract (1,0mg/mL) showed higher values (11.7%) than green mate ethanolic extract. Only aqueous and etheric green tea extracts presented lower values when compared to the BHT. Conclusion. It was evident the high antioxidant activity of different extracts from mate (green and roasted) and green tea, indicating the potential use of these herbs as natural antioxidants in food systems.

The advance and spread agricultural frontiers and the necessity to meet the needs of market has lead to a change in the mate-tea growth system in the Southern region of Brazil. Pest problems, previously unnoticed in the extraction system, have increased in importance, due to the implantation of single vegetable species, which has lead to the simplification of the environment, with increasingly larger economical losses. More than eighty animal species feed from different parts of the mate-tea plant. A good management is crucial and it should take into consideration the several factors relevant to this peculiar environment, so that disturbances do not promote populational explosions of some of these species. In the event of any such unbalance, the result would be increased cost and decreased quality of the product. In the context, this study was conducted in Dois Vizinhos town, in the State of Paraná, with the objective of studying the phytophagous mites and their population dynamics, as well as that of their natural predators. For this reason, leaf samples from different parts of the plant have been taken, and the number of mites was counted. This research has been done from August 2001 to July 2002. During this period, two species of phytophagous mites, Dichopelmus notus Keifer, 1960 and Oligonichus yothersi (McGregor), 1914, and three species of predators identified as Euseius concordis (Chant, 1959), Iphiseiodes zuluagai Denmark & Muma, 1972and Agistemus sp. were related to the mate-tea plant. The D. notus mite has appeared in large numbers in mature leaves and in the inferior face of leaves. It was more frequent in the inferior part of leaves belonging to the inferior and medium stratum and in leaves from the internal canopy. On the other hand, O. yothersi has mainly occurred in mature leaves, in their superior face. The concentration of E. concordis e I. zuluagai has been larger in the inferior face of the leaves belonging to the inferior and medium stratum, as well as in the inferior face of the leaves in the internal canopy region, and in the inferior face of mature leaves. D. notus, O. yothersi, E.concordis and I. zuluagai mites have attained the ir highest population numbers in periods of mild temperatures and little rain precipitation. In leaves from the external canopy, the largest population density of Agistemus sp. has occurred in periods of high temperature and heavy rain. There was indication of mutual influence between these species.

Abstract:

Abstract:
This work deals with the influence of the powder and aqueous extracts of C. ambrosioides on the maize weevil, S. zeamais. The powders tested were obtained from leaves, branches, fruits and the whole plant (with fruits), when the plant was in the fructification period. The insects were obtained from a population reared on wheat grains. The effect of the powders from the different vegetal structures and from the whole plant (with fruits) was evaluated concerning the insect behavior (attractiveness and/or repellence), insecticide activity on the immature and adult phases, and the insecticide residual power on the adult phase, with the powder alone and mixed with wheat grains. The insecticide activity of the aqueous extract from the different structures and from the whole plant (with fruits) was evaluated on immature and adult S. zeamais. The results were as follows: a) powders from fruits, branches and leaves of C. ambrosioides are not repellent to S. zeamais adults; b) powders from branches and leaves do not present insecticide activity against S. zeamais adults; c) the compounds with insecticide activity are present in the C. ambrosioides fruits; d) powders from fruits present insecticide residual effect against S. zeamais adults for a period up to 5 days; e) powders from fruits and from the whole plant (with fruits), applied 15 days after initial infestation, present insecticide effect on S. zeamais immature phase; f) the aqueous extracts do not affect the survival and the adult emergence of S. zeamais.

Abstract:
This study had as objective to quantify the total herbal tea biomass, to quantify the biomass produced in harvesting, to determine the nutrients amount in biomass compartments, to quantify the exported nutrients in herbal tea harvesting and to adjust mathematic models to quantify, due to equations, the harvest, residual and total biomass. Thirty plots were evaluated, totalizing 306 trees, where each circular plot had 44,18 m2 as area. In these plots, the biometric variables of each tree were measured: total height (ht), trunk diameters at 0,60 m above the soil (d 0.6 meters), height from the first branch or trunk, live crown lenght and crown projection rays. The harvest biomass, composed by leaves, stems and residue was evaluated too. After that, a plant located outside the plot was evaluated, that had the average dendrometric characteristics as the ones included in the plots. Later, each tree was cut at soil level, the leaves and stems, residues, wood, bark and roots weight were determined. The above ground biomass plus the roots biomass consisted in total biomass. The samples taken were dried in an oven to dry biomass and nutrients amount determination. The equations to estimate biomass, were done through SAS System version 8. The Stepwise method of independent variables selection was used, where at maximum 3 variables were included in the selected equations, and the partial R2 from the independent variable was higher to 1% to be considerable significant. The selection test from equations was done with and without intercept. The results showed by the equations without intercept were higher, being rejected these last ones. The nutrients amount determination was done in leaves and stem, wood, residues, bark and roots dried matter. The average fresh and dried biomass plus stems, sampled in the 30 units in kg/tree and kg/ha were: 7,849; 18577,34; 3,081; 7585,22 respectively. The average fresh and dried biomass residues in the 30 units in kg/tree and kg/ha were: 2,583; 6195,71; 1,009; 3052,01. The average fresh and dried leaves and stems biomass sampled in the 30 felled trees in kg/tree were: 7,713 and 3,174 respectively. The average fresh and dried biomass residues, sampled in 30 felled trees in kg/tree were: 2,708 and 1,358 respectively. The average fresh and dried biomass in wood, sampled in the 30 felled trees in kg/tree were: 13,609 and 6,785 respectively. The average fresh and dried roots biomass, sampled in the 30 felled trees were: 7,678 and 4,693 respectively. The total average fresh biomass per felled tree in kg/tree was 33,135. The total average dried biomass in kg/tree was 16,857. The estimated equations for different herbal tea dried biomasses were: wood biomass = 0.28329.rm + 0.07082.dh2; bark biomass =0,44728.lnm + 1,33596.im2; root biomass=2,32270.lnm + 12,81476.im2; residues biomass=0,34026.m 2,61245*ln2m + 0,43581.rm; leaves plus stems biomass=0,56043.ac + 2,06004.ln2d; total biomass=11,29406.rm + 0,10522.dh2. The total stand dried biomass was 41.078,03 kg/ha, being distributed: 16.654,49 kg/ha in the wood; 11.973,01 kg/ha in the roots; 7.582,22 kg/ha in leaves plus stems; 3.052,01 kg/ha in residues and 2.113,30 kg/ha in the bark. The macronutrients exported outside the stand follow this order: nitrogen > potassium > calcium > magnesium > sulphur > phosphorus. The components that show the higher amounts per hectare are: leaves plus stems (404,26 kg/ha), followed by roots (313,50 kg/ha), wood (149,93 kg/ha), residue (104,75 kg/ha) and bark (93,16 kg/ha). The micronutrients exported followed this order: iron > manganese > zinc > boron > cupper. The compartments that show the higher amounts per hectare are: roots (19,31 kg/ha), followed by leaves plus stems (6,43 kg/ha), wood (2,50 kg/ha), bark (2,24 kg/ha) and residues (1,08 kg/ha).
Abstract:
Abstract As the Dutch and English battled at home and abroad, the major trade commodities also underwent a dramatic shift. Changes in tastes and political climates in Europe caused the profitability of the spices to fall precipitously. This led the VOC and the EIC to seek new markets including cotton, coffee, opium and tea. It was in the middle of the seventeenth century that European interest in spices began to wane. In fact, there was an oversupply of pepper by mid-century, which dropped prices by about 40% compared with that which the Portuguese and then the VOC had long been able to maintain (Lunde, 2005). After a peak of seven million kilograms of pepper imported in 1670, levels fell to about three-and-a-half million kilograms in 1688 (Krondle, 2007). Pepper had lost its status as an exotic luxury in Europe and was now more or less a mundane commodity. The other spices held their high status longer, but they too began to lose their glow by the end of the seventeenth century.

Abstract:

Abstract:

Abstract:

Abstract:
Flow field analysis is a foundation to many thermal-dynamic phenomena in the nuclear containment. There are several ventilation systems under normal condition to assure the proper environment for staff and facilities, and the two main ventilation systems are the Reactor Pit Ventilation system (EVC) and the Containment Continuous Ventilation system (EVR). The fans of the ventilation systems recycle the air in the containment to various rooms, and cooling coils are cooled by the Nuclear Island Chilled Water system (DEG). In this paper, we simulated the 3D flow field in a Chinese traditional generation II+ PWR reactor containment under normal conditions with a commercial CFD software ANSYS FLUENT. According the actual geometry data of the reactor plant, we built the geometry model, including the EVC and EVR system, and they were checked by plant experts to assure authenticity. Proper maximum mesh sizes were set for different parts at the ICEM CFD, and the grid number was about ten millions. We used the fan model in the ANSYS FLUENT to simulate fans in the ventilations. The calculated values of flow rate in ventilation systems were in good agreement with the design values.

Abstract:

Abstract:
Electric vehicles (EVs) are a valuable tool in addressing the climate and energy challenges placed on our transportation systems. However, while national and international market shares of EVs have been rising with exponential rates, access to EVs of low-income populations has been significantly slower. This research developed a business model for expanding the EV market to low-income Californians. The team developed the model from qualitative data from various stakeholders, including Electric and Solar Companies, Professional and Community-Based Organizations, State Agencies, research institutions, and more, which enabled insights regarding various barriers that hinder the adoption of EVs. The team also used a state-wide survey to understand the barriers from the point of view of lower income Californians. The business model created from this data can be used by state administrators, policy makers, and social emprises to mitigate the barriers faced by low-income Californians within the EV market.

Abstract:
This technical note was developed by the US Army Engineer Research and Development Center–Environmental Laboratory (ERDC-EL) to provide guidance to the US Army Corps of Engineers (USACE) on implementing Endangered Species Act* (ESA) Section 7(a)(1) conservation planning, in coordination with the US Fish and Wildlife Service (USFWS) and the National Marine Fisheries Service (NMFS) during coastal engineering projects. USACE expends ~$200–$300 million each year on compliance, conservation, and other activities associated with the ESA (USACE 2022), and these expenditures often exceed those of other federal agencies (for example, US Bureau of Land Management) that have jurisdiction over far greater land holdings than USACE. To streamline the ESA compliance process, lower costs, and generate more positive outcomes for federally listed threatened and endangered species (TES), USACE was directed in June 2015 by the Deputy Commanding General (DCG) for Civil and Emergency Operations to proactively identify and incorporate conservation benefits into all projects when and where opportunities arise, under the authority of Section 7(a)(1) of the ESA (USACE 2015). The DCG identified Section 7(a)(1) conservation planning as a mechanism to efficiently achieve project purposes, create environmental value, and streamline the ESA Section 7(a)(2) consultation process.

Rosato-Scott, Claire, Dani J. Barrington, Amita Bhakta, Sarah J. House, Islay Mactaggart, and Jane Wilbur. The Sanitation Learning Hub, Institute of Development Studies, October 2020. http://dx.doi.org/10.19088/slh.2020.009.

Full text
Abstract:

Abstract:
Objectives. To assess how to provide telehealth care by identifying characteristics of telehealth delivery, patient populations, settings, benefits and harms, and implementation strategies during the COVID-19 era. Data sources. PubMed®, CINAHL®, PsycINFO®, and the Cochrane Central Register of Controlled Trials were searched from March 2020 to May 2022. Additional studies were identified from reference lists and experts. Review methods. We included studies that reported characteristics of telehealth use; benefits and harms of telehealth; factors impacting the success of telehealth, including satisfaction/dissatisfaction and barriers/facilitators; and implementation outcomes. We conducted a mixed-methods review, synthesizing quantitative and qualitative studies. Two reviewers independently screened search results for eligibility, serially extracted data, and independently assessed risk of bias of included studies. Results. We included 764 studies; 310 studies were included in our syntheses. Patients using telehealth were more likely to be people who are young to middle-aged, female, White, of higher socioeconomic status, and living in urban settings. Visits for mental and behavioral health conditions were more frequent than visits for other conditions, and mental or behavioral care was also more likely to be delivered via telehealth than care for other conditions. Across a variety of conditions, telehealth produced similar clinical outcomes as compared with in-person care. Telehealth care is appropriate for some patients, but more information is necessary to determine the suitability of telehealth for specific patient populations; patients and providers felt that telehealth may be less suitable and less desirable for patients with complex clinical conditions; and some patients perceive telehealth as a barrier to improved health outcomes owing to the absence of a physical exam and challenges in developing rapport and communicating with their care team. There was a lack of evidence addressing implementation cost, penetration, and sustainability of telehealth, and about telehealth implementation at the health system level. Conclusions. Whereas telehealth use spiked after the beginning of the pandemic, the characteristics of patients using telehealth follow a pattern similar to that for other healthcare and digital health services. We found that the use of telehealth may be comparable to in-person care across different clinical and process outcomes. Telehealth implementation has addressed the needs of both patients and providers to some extent, even as clinical conditions, patient and provider characteristics, and type of assessment varied. Telehealth has provided a viable alternative mode of care delivery during the pandemic and holds promise for the future.
