Full textThis thesis reflects on the fact that the concept of gender cannot be reduced to a simple attribute of individuals. In Burkinabe perspectives, experiences and processes of gender appropriation are perceived as relational modalities, revealing certain discourses of resistance shaped by the postcolonial experience. The aim of this study is to demonstrate the complexity within Burkina Faso's educational system. Methodologically, the research is qualitative, and observations are based on classical techniques of human and social sciences, with specific adaptations for the field: participant observation, semi-directed interviews, analysis of unsolicited written documents, and in-depth reflection on the field experiences of the research actors. This qualitative approach has led me to reconsider the concepts of fieldwork and corpus, revealing that fieldwork and the observations it produces constitute a genuine adventure where nothing is predetermined. The interpretative approaches I have adopted have fostered a reflexive dimension, enriched by the recursive nature of knowledge constructed through interactions with informants and the research context. In this framework, gender is no 1715 longer perceived solely through its institutional, objective dimension, but as a set of experiences of self and otherness put into discourse, where complex social, cultural and traditional representations intersect. Through analysis of educational practices, I have identified points of tension between institutional conceptions of gender, (often influenced by Western perspectives), and the localized perspectives of informants, who sometimes view institutional guidelines as foreign to their own “reality”. This comprehensive approach enhances understanding of the complexities and contradictions inherent in the process of gender appropriation within the Burkina Faso educational system

Full textThe implementation of the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs) has led to significant but uneven progress between countries. Sub-Saharan African countries continue to be characterized by high proportion of out-of-school children, high child mortality and a high burden of communicable diseases in the overall disease burden, including malaria. Added to this is a high fertility level with its potential economic consequences. The Sustainable Development Goals also target malaria for elimination by 2030 and advocate for quality education for all, including early childhood care, which had been overlooked in the MDGs. This thesis focuses on analysing aspects of development linked to these global challenges. This thesis focuses on analyzing aspects of development related to these global challenges. The first chapter analyses the impact of malaria control campaigns on fertility in Mali using data from the Demographic and Health Surveys of 2006 and 2012 and those of the Malaria Atlas Project for the same period. The results show that malaria has a negative effect on fertility (-0.24 children). Among the mechanisms that explain this effect (infant deaths, abortions), mother’s education is more important. The second chapter examines the relationship between malaria, household income and investment in education through a randomized controlled trial in a village in Mali. Surveys were conducted in July and December 2016 within the same households, with microscopic screening for malaria in children aged 3 months to 5 years. The results show that relaxing the constraints of economic losses linked to malaria (direct costs, care expenses, and/or loss of productivity) allowed households to save 3194 F CFA (5 euros) and to make additional expenditures of 2863 F CFA (4 euros) in children's education. The third chapter, also a randomized controlled trial, analyses the effect of reminder messages and information to household heads on the use and adoption of the ITN strategy using a mobile phone platform in Bobo Dioulasso, Burkina Faso. Surveys were conducted in 2013, 2016 and 2017 to collect data within the same households. The results show that the problem of inappropriate use of preventive malaria care can be solved by using the traditional method of health awareness or by disseminating information messages to heads of households through a mobile phone platform. The effect was between 4.6 and 6 percentage points for text and voice messages respectively. The fourth chapter analyses the impact and cost of a set of health and education strategies (micronutrients, CPS, deworming) on improving early childhood development. This was a randomized controlled trial with villages as the randomization unit, conducted in 2016 in an area of high malaria transmission and high prevalence of anaemia, in Sikasso in southern Mali. The cost of the different strategies was evaluated from the provider's perspective for a relatively short time horizon. The integrated disease control strategies, the implementation of Early Childhood Development Centres and parental education did not have an impact on early childhood development. However, the cost of implementing these strategies was limited. In conclusion, malaria is a burden on economic development through its effects on fertility and income, potentially penalising investment in education. Our results therefore contribute to the existing literature on the effect of malaria on economic development

Full textThis doctoral research is part of the general field of studies on academic persistence at the departments of education and particularly in measurement and evaluation in education. The understanding of academic persistence is based on a longitudinal process in which pre-entry attributes [PEA] and university system experience [USE] are very important to consider. In this context, three components of the Tinto (1997) model on persistence were studied: PEA (family background, personal attributes, prior schooling), USE (academic resources, class experience) and academic persistence. To the author's knowledge, no empirical research has been conducted on this issue. In order to contribute to improving academic persistence, this thesis aims to evaluate the effect of PEA on academic persistence in master’s degree in science and technology and to analyse the role of USE on the relationship between these two variables. Analysis of this role identifies USE’s variables that explain inequalities related to PEA. The research was structured in eight parts: introduction, Burkina Faso education system, problems, theoretical framework, articles 1, 2, 3, general discussion and conclusion. The first three parts present the context of the study as well as the general problems. The fourth part discusses the theories and models on academic persistence, variables and the links between articles that focus on specific issues. The purpose of the first article is to analyze and document existing knowledge about the links between the three variables through a systematic review of scientific literature. Three objectives underlie this goal: (1) How these three variables are operationalized in scientific research? (2) What are the empirical links between pre-entry attributes, the University experience, and academic persistence? (3) What is the role of the USE on the relationship between PEA and academic persistence? Findings indicate that despite different operationalisations, PEA, USE, and academic persistence are interrelated. Only one study suggested the mediation role of USE in the relationship between PEA and academic persistence. The second article question whether the family context (father's profession), personal attributes (gender, age at registration, place of birth), prior schooling (student’s major, graduate point average in high school (GPA), cohorts, time to first registration) predict academic persistence in science and technology. Using the survivor function of Kaplan and Meier (1958) and the Cox regression model (1972) on 14 cohorts of freshmen (n = 13,891), findings show that father’s occupation [other], gender, age at registration, GPA, and cohorts predict academic persistence in mater’s degree in science and technology. The results seem to legitimate the use of the Tinto model (1997) in Africa and Burkina Faso in particular. The third article analyzed the role of the USE on the relationship between PEA and academic persistence in master’s degree in science and technology at the university. The Cox model coupled with inverse odd ratio weighting and bootstrapping methods are used on longitudinal data from 14 cohorts of students (n = 13, 891) to analyze the effect of variables. The results made it possible to determine the type of mediation for each of the CPA variables: indirectonly mediation (father’s occupation [Other], major, age at registration), complementary (GPA), competitive (Time to first registration, University reform); direct-only nonmediation for gender; no-effect nonmediation for the place of birth. The general discussion focused on the findings of the thesis and the potential impact on helping students to complete their program in master’s degree in science and technology. Overall, the results of this thesis made it possible to document knowledge on the links between the three variables, identify the PEA that affect academic persistence and clarify the USE role on the relationship between these two variables. The limitations and perspectives of the research are presented.

Full textThe fight against gender inequalities and poverty is a central issue for policy makers in Burkina Faso and Senegal.Indeed, we observe high gender inequality level in both countries (in formal labour market and in household work) andhigh poverty level, which affects 40.1% of the population in Burkina Faso and 38% in Senegal (World Bank 2020). It iswhy economic development plan have drawn up based on specific reforms in each country. In Burkina Faso, thechallenge is to increase the public resources allocated to development, which leads to a reform of VAT and oil subsidies. We analyse the effects of these policies on gender inequalities, poverty and food security. In Senegal, the transformationof the economy has been already started, with a particular interest for agriculture sector. We are interested in the effectsof this transformation on gender inequalities and poverty. Using computable general equilibrium models, the results ofthis thesis show that the reforms envisaged in Burkina Faso have negative effects on gender and poverty. In Senegal, thetransformation of the agricultural sector leads to a decrease in gender inequalities and poverty
