Full textAt the intersection of Armenian, Turkish, and Soviet studies, this dissertation aims to use Armenians as a case study for a comparative history of educational systems in Turkey and Soviet Armenia during the interwar period.Originally tasked with training the elites, educational systems were assigned new roles as national movements emerged: to educate the masses in the idea of the nation. The explosion of violence in the region—wars, as well as the Armenian Genocide in the Ottoman Empire—shattered Armenian educational systems, which had previously been known for their efficiency. The new states that arose from the former empires attempted to implement various educational projects aimed at constructing a new society. Initially, Armenian schools enjoyed greater leeway due to the weakening of traditional actors in the region as a result of war and political instability. However, as these new states sought international recognition, they gradually took over and (re)constructed educational systems in their own image. After a flurry of reforms in the 1920s, the 1930s became a period of consolidation, and by the eve of World War II, both Turkey and Soviet Armenia had functional educational systems in place.Nevertheless, these reforms provoked various reactions from Armenians, who, although left with no choice but to adapt to the sometimes brutal changes, managed to preserve certain specificities, which differed on either side of the Arax River, the border between Turkey and the Soviet Union.Through a heuristic perspective and using a transdisciplinary approach, this dissertation seeks to address the questions raised by the very existence of Armenian educational systems after the collapse of the empires and within the new states, comparing minority and nationality policies, as well as examining issues of identity, citizenship, and the transmission of cultural heritage across generations

Full textThe present work is composed of 4 chapters. The first chapter presents the history of the publication of Philosophical Studies (Etudes Philosophiques) in France, in Russia and in Armenia from 1830 to our days. We are trying to explain why in Russia and in Armenia these works are less published. The second chapter concerns the problem of the translation. We found important to speak about the difficulties of the translation of the titles, of the tenses, of the expressions used by Balzac, which are the most of time neglected in translations. In the third chapter we represent the reception of the works of Balzac, especially of Philosophical Studies (Etudes Philosophiques) in the three above mentioned countries. The last chapter is devoted to the psychoanalytical study of Philosophical Studies (Etudes Philosophiques). It is not a secret that Balzac was an unloved child: this fact gave us the idea to read his works from the point of view of psychoanalysis

Full textThe myth of heavenly jerusalem holds a special place in the religious imagery of the christian world from antiquity to the middle ages. It has generated numerous artistic interpretations within eastern and western pictorial traditions. Since recent years, much attention has been accorded to this subject in modern research. However, the architectural motif which serves as artistic framework to the canon tables has been omitted from this rich artistic material. The synoptic invention of eusebius, bishop of caesarea, as well as its artistic decoration integrated christian codices as early as the beginning of the 4th century and became one of the widespread motifs in greek, latin, armenian, syrian, georgian and ethiopian iconographic traditions. Taking as a basis the rich iconographic material within armenian illuminated manuscripts, this dissertation studies the architectural and artistic framework of canon tables’ decoration on the background of iconography of heavenly city in early christian art. The study establishes many ties between this particular architectural motif in book illumination and those christian representations that depict the abstract concept of heavenly jerusalem by means of real terrestrial city and its most important sanctuary, the church of the holy sepulchre of jerusalem. The present research follows then the development of canon tables’ decoration within medieval artistic tradition and examines some important metamorphosis in their visual language. Analyses allow to postulate the relation between this transformed model of canon tables and new artistic formulas and symbolic aspects of the heavenly jerusalem in medieval art

Full textHow the development of the refugees issue at the beginning of the xxth century emerges in the field of international relationships ? Can we say that it starts a humanitarian diplomacy by peace time about refugees ? How the study of the middle-east and the plans settled by the league of nations explain the nature and the limits of this diplomacy ? The first part of our study is about the middle-east in 1918-1923. Refugees in cilicia, syria and lebanon take part in the french eastern diplomacy as an element in the military strategy, territorial rivalries, and the minorities "game" after 1921. In the second part, we are studying europe and geneva, and we are trying to analyse the evolution of the refugees issue (massive exodus, stateless persons, forced denationalisations, obligation of passeport) and the development of the humanitarian action. We describe the framework of the humanitarian diplomacy : high-commissionner of the l. O. N. , advisory committee of private organisations, and refugees service of the i. L. O. The third part studies the international settlement plans of armenian and assyrian refugees in syria and lebanon between 1927 and 1938, the intervention of the international red cross committee during the revolt of druzes (1925-1926), and the main elements of humanitarian network (protestant missions. International red cross committee, i. L. O. , l. O. N. , french office of l. O. N. ), with a special attention to fridtjof nansen and albert thomas. The conclusion underlines contributions of socio-history of international relationships, the study of networks appears as an important element in the analysis of international cooperation structures
