Abstract:
This study deals with the emerging dynamics of socio-religious controversies and conflicts in south western Ethiopia particularly in Jimma Zone. Religious controversies and conflicts have become topics of discussion among peoples across Ethiopia, particularly in Jimma. Thus, the purpose of this study was to examine the emerging dynamics of socio-religious controversies and conflicts in Omo Nadda woreda. To this end, qualitative data gathering method was employed. A total of thirty six research participants: from the dwellers, religious leaders, administrative and police offices of woreda and zonal level were purposely selected and interviewed. Besides, FGDs and case study was conducted. The research participants were drawn from different social strata, gender, age, ethnic background, marital status and religious background. Moreover, relevant documents were reviewed. All the data generated through these data gathering tools were analyzed thematically and meanings were constructed out of them. The study examined and tried to identify different factors contributing to Muslim-Christian controversies and conflicts. Similarly, it explored how the emerging religious teachings undermined the healthy relationship between the inhabitants. The study further examined controversies over religious radicalization among different sections of the community and how the local authorities have been trying to resolve religious conflicts and mitigate religious controversies in south western Ethiopia.

Abstract:
Development of micro and small enterprises holds the attraction of being the most important component of broader economic development and poverty alleviation. They are seen as a key and sustainable generator of employment and income for citizens and tax revenue for the state. They also serve as a bridge between informal economy and the formalized corporate sector in developing countries. Likewise, if they are able to meet the required export quality and standards, for some countries they are a source of foreign exchange earnings. It is also believed that a variant micro and small enterprise sector helps to encourage competition since they are favorable to bring about economic growth.

Abstract:
A cross sectional study on infectious bursal disease was conducted in apparently healthy backyard chicken at Waliso district of Southwestern Shoa, central oromia, Ethiopia from from November, 2018 to October, 2019. A total of 282 chickens were randomly selected to estimate seroprevalence of IBD infection and to identify the likely potential risk factors for the disease. Serum samples collected and serological test conducted in laboratory at National Animal Health Diagnosis and Investigation Center Sebeta, Ethopia. Out of 282 serum samples tested 224 were positive for indirect ELISA technique and the overall seroprevalence of IBDV in the study area was found to be 79.43% at individual level. Educational level of owners, kebeles and flock size significantly affect seroprevalence of IBD in the study area. The effect of difference in managements like source of replacement, frequency of house cleaning, use of disinfectant and isolation practice has a significant effect on IBDV sero-prevalence. A lower seroprevalence of IBDV was reported in good hygienic level of house (26.7%) than poor level of chicken house hygiene (96.4%) with statistically significant difference (P < 0.05). The seroprevalence of IBDV in the present study associated with chicken management, flock size, owner education level and other animal related risk factors for occurrence of the disease. Therefore, awareness on chicken health management, and importance of immunization would help to minimize the prevalence of the disease and play crucial role in the control of the disease. Furthermore, characterizing virus strains circulating in the area in future study is recommended.

Abstract:
Ethiopian-Semitic constitutes a compact, readily defined and homogeneous linguistic family, consisting of Ge' ez, Tigre, Tigrinya, Amharic, Argobba, Harari, Gafat, and the Gurage cluster. The most recent attempt to set up a classification of Ethiopian-Semitic was Hetzron [1972}, but this work was rather thoroughly criticized by Goldenberg [1977], and the field has yet to recover from it. The present note seeks to open the classification question anew by providing a basic, minimalist classification scheme, which can serve as a starting-off point for any future work on the subject. We begin with some of the results of Marcel Cohen [1931], "the father of Ethiopian studies" in the twentieth century. Cohen treats Tigre and Tigrinya as Northern Ethiopic, and Amharic, Harari, and the Gurage cluster as Southern Ethiopic. All are ultimately descendants of a ProtoEthiopic koine most closely resembling Ge'ez. Gurage, according to Cohen, is not a language or a linguistic unit in itself, but rather an ensemble of at least two separate and mutually unintelligible dialect clusters, Eastern Gurage and Western Gurage. Eastern Gurage consists of Wolane, Selti-Ulbarag, (and in the present state of our knowledge also Zway) , and is most closely connected with Harari. Western Gurage consists of several subgroups of dialects, in particular (a) Chaha, Ezha, Ennemor (Inor), Gumar, Gyeto (and in the present state of our knowledge Endegefi) and (b) Muher, Gogot, Masqan. Aymallel (Soddo, Kgstangiiiia), another Gurage tongue, is left unclassified by Cohen, as being perhaps intermediate between the two groups. Tentatively, he terms it North-Eastern Gurage. (Gafat and Argobba are not classified by Cohen.) Cohen's classification may be modified and/or expanded on the basis of the following points. Western Gurage tongue.

Abstract:
Dionysius of Halicarnassus's account of ethopoeia at Lysias 8 is often cited as evidence of Lysias mastery of character portrayal, but the passage itself has received little in-depth analysis. As a consequence, Dionysius's meaning has at times been misinterpreted, and some of his insights on characterization have been neglected. When the account is examined closely, three unique points of emphasis emerge which, taken together, constitute a particular type of characterization: persuasive, as opposed to propriety-oriented, ethopoeia. Making this distinction promotes conceptual clarity with regard to ethopoeia while calling attention to Dionysius's insights on the role of style and composition in the creation of persuasive ethos.

Abstract:
ABSTRACT In the late American nineteenth century, oratory was de rigueur. Institutionally, liberal arts colleges sought to distinguish themselves by teaching moral character. Such an ethotic education was sine qua non for any student of political oratory. This essay argues that such an emphasis on character and oratory, coupled with Illinois College’s rhetorical curriculum and extracurricular events, afforded a kairotic and didactic moment for William Jennings Bryan to learn and practice Isocrates’ brand of rhetorical paideia. Taught primarily through the use of paradigm cases and imitation, Isocrates emphasized the import of a speaker’s ethos over the art itself. Bryan shared this perspective. Drawing from both “Against the Sophists” and “Antidosis,” we conduct a comparative analysis by reading Isocrates’ ethotic-based rhetorical theory alongside of Bryan’s 1881 graduating oration entitled “Character.”

Abstract:
Two-component signal transduction systems (TCSs) play fundamental roles in bacterial survival and pathogenesis and have been proposed as targets for the development of novel classes of antibiotics. A new coupled assay was developed and applied to analyse the kinetic mechanisms of three new kinds of inhibitors of TCS function. The assay exploits the biochemical properties of the cognate HpkA–DrrA histidine kinase–response regulator pair from Thermotoga maritima and allows multiple turnovers of HpkA, linear formation of phosphorylated DrrA, and Michaelis–Menten analysis of inhibitors. The assay was validated in several ways, including confirmation of competitive inhibition by adenosine 5′-β,γ-imidotriphosphate (AMP-PNP). The coupled assay, autophosphorylation and chemical cross-linking were used to determine the mechanisms by which several compounds inhibit TCS function. A cyanoacetoacetamide showed non-competitive inhibition with respect to ATP concentration in the coupled assay. The cyanoacetoacetamide also inhibited autophosphorylation of histidine kinases from other bacteria, indicating that the coupled assay could detect general inhibitors of histidine kinase function. Inhibition of HpkA autophosphorylation by this compound was probably caused by aggregation of HpkA, consistent with a previous model for other hydrophobic compounds. In contrast, ethodin was a potent inhibitor of the combined assay, did not inhibit HpkA autophosphorylation, but still led to aggregation of HpkA. These data suggest that ethodin bound to the HpkA kinase and inhibited transfer of the phosphoryl group to DrrA. A peptide corresponding to the phosphorylation site of DrrA appeared to inhibit TCS function by a mechanism similar to that of ethodin, except that autophosphorylation was inhibited at high peptide concentrations. The latter mechanism of inhibition of TCS function is unusual and its analysis demonstrates the utility of these approaches to the kinetic analyses of additional new classes of inhibitors of TCS function.

Abstract:
Empirical studies have repeatedly shown that autonomous artificial entities elicit social behavior on the part of the human interlocutor. Various theoretical approaches have tried to explain this phenomenon. The agency assumption states that the social influence of human interaction partners (represented by avatars) will always be higher than the influence of artificial entities (represented by embodied conversational agents). Conversely, the Ethopoeia concept predicts that automatic social reactions are triggered by situations as soon as they include social cues. Both theories have been challenged in a2×2between subjects design with two levels of agency (low: agent, high: avatar) and two interfaces with different degrees of social cues (low: textchat, high: virtual human). The results show that participants in the virtual human condition reported a stronger sense of mutual awareness, imputed more positive characteristics, and allocated more attention to the virtual human than participants in the text chat conditions. Only one result supports the agency assumption; participants who believed to interact with a human reported a stronger feeling of social presence than participants who believed to interact with an artificial entity. It is discussed to what extent these results support the social cue assumption made in the Ethopoeia approach.

Abstract:
Visual characteristics are among the most important features for characterizing the phenotype of biological organisms. Color and geometric properties define population phenotype and allow assessing diversity and adaptation to environmental conditions. To analyze geometric properties classical morphometrics relies on biologically relevant landmarks which are manually assigned to digital images. Assigning landmarks is tedious and error prone. Predefined landmarks may in addition miss out on information which is not obvious to the human eye. The machine learning (ML) community has recently proposed new data analysis methods which by uncovering subtle features in images obtain excellent predictive accuracy. Scientific credibility demands however that results are interpretable and hence to mitigate the black-box nature of ML methods. To overcome the black-box nature of ML we apply complementary methods and investigate internal representations with saliency maps to reliably identify location specific characteristics in images of Nile tilapia populations. Analyzing fish images which were sampled from six Ethiopian lakes reveals that deep learning improves on a conventional morphometric analysis in predictive performance. A critical assessment of established saliency maps with a novel significance test reveals however that the improvement is aided by artifacts which have no biological interpretation. More interpretable results are obtained by a Bayesian approach which allows us to identify genuine Nile tilapia body features which differ in dependence of the animals habitat. We find that automatically inferred Nile tilapia body features corroborate and expand the results of a landmark based analysis that the anterior dorsum, the fish belly, the posterior dorsal region and the caudal fin show signs of adaptation to the fish habitat. We may thus conclude that Nile tilapia show habitat specific morphotypes and that a ML analysis allows inferring novel biological knowledge in a reproducible manner.

Abstract:
In this paper, it is shown how formal dialectic can be extended to model multi-agent argumentation in which each participant is an agent. An agent is viewed as a participant in a dialogue who not only has goals, and the capability for actions, but who also has stable characteristics of types that can be relevant to an assessment of some of her arguments used in that dialogue. When agents engage in argumentation in dialogues, each agent has a credibility function that can be adjusted upwards or downwards by certain types of arguments brought forward by the other agent in the dialogue. One type is the argument against the person or argumentum ad hominem, in which personal attack on one party's character is used to attack his argument. Another is the appeal to expert opinion, traditionally associated with the informal fallacy called the argumentum ad verecundiam. In any particular case, an agent will begin a dialogue with a given degree of credibility, and what is here called the credibility function will affect the plausibility of the arguments put forward by that agent. In this paper, an agent is shown to have specific character traits that are vital to properly judging how this credibility function should affect the plausibility of her arguments, including veracity, prudence, sincerity and openness to opposed arguments. When one of these traits is a relevant basis for an adjustment in a credibility function, there is a shift to a subdialogue in which the argumentation in the case is re-evaluated. In such a case, it is shown how the outcome can legitimately be a reduction in the credibility rating of the arguer who was attacked. Then it is shown how the credibility function should be brought into an argument evaluation in the case, yielding the outcome that the argument is assigned a lower plausibility value.

Abstract:
The review is devoted to S. Sillars’ book Shakespeare and the Visual Imagination. Sillars introduces the concept of ‘visual imagination’ and examines it through the works of Shakespeare. Other key notions for the study include copia and ethopoeia. Sillars uses them to combine analyses of different Shakespearean plays. In his examination of the playwright’s legacy Sillars employs a variety of methods, which counts as a merit rather than a flaw of this work. However, his arguments justifying a special place for As You Like It and The Winter’s Tale among Shakespeare’s oeuvre are not convincing. In his study Sillars turns to subjects well known to researchers, but also references less common works for comparison (Hypnerotomachia Poliphili ).

Abstract:
ABSTRACT Lysias is best known for his portrayal of character (ethopoiia), his believable narratives, his plain or “Attic” style, and for the role he plays as inferior foil to Socrates in Plato’s Phaedrus. But he was also an important figure in developing, refining, and employing types of argument, including the rhetorical technique that would later be called the enthymeme. In On the Death of Eratosthenes, Lysias not only uses enthymemes, he highlights their use, selects a term (enthymizing), and demonstrates how “enthymizing” could be central to rhetorical artistry, to narrative development, to legal reasoning, and to political activism. Examining Lysias 1 not only deepens our understanding of Lysias’ rhetorical abilities, but it suggests that the orators had an important role to play in the development of rhetorical theory.

Stones, Emily D., and Craig A. Meyer. "Disability Ethos as Invention in the United States’ Twentieth and Early Twenty-First Centuries." Humanities 9, no. 1 (January 16, 2020): 11. http://dx.doi.org/10.3390/h9010011.

Abstract:
This article posits that disability activists routinely present a disability “ethos of invention” as central to the reformation of an ableist society. Dominant societal approaches to disability injustice, such as rehabilitation, accessibility, and inclusion, may touch upon the concept of invention; but, with ethotic discourse, we emphasize disability as generative and adept at producing new ways of knowing and being in the world. We identify an “ethos of invention” as driving early resistance to socially constructed “normalcy”, leading the push for cross-disability alliances to incorporate intersectional experiences and propelling the discursive move from inclusion to social justice. Through our partial re-telling of disability rights history, we articulate invention as central to it and supporting its aims to affirm disability culture, reform society through disabled perspectives and values, and promote people with disabilities’ full participation in society.

Abstract:
In the Prologue to his Livro de Linhagens, Count Pedro de Barcelos both emulates and subverts his great grandfather’s legal codes (mainly Partida IV), in order to create an ethosfor the Iberian aristocracy. This ethosis based on the convergence between natura(the divinely established order of the world), lineage and blood kinship, which, in the Count’s Aristotelian grounded view, leads to a widely spread friendship/solidarity that has a pacifying effect on social tensions. It is a kind of friendship ontologically linked with God and the Creation, pre-existing to the instituted relations of domination, and capable of substituting them advantageously as a mechanism of social regulation. According to Pedro de Barcelos’ argument, the ancient aristocratic practices emerging from this friendship perform as a kind of embryonic habituswhose preservation is linked to the survival of the Iberian aristocracy as a social group endowed with a specific legitimising symbolic capital.

Abstract:

Abstract:
A XX. század jól-rosszul modernizálódó, jó és kevésbé jóakaratú államok „asszisztenciája" mellett a családon, iskolán, egyházon kívüli szabadidőre ún. mozgalmak, szervezetek jöttek létre, amelyek jól-rosszul megfeleltek az állami, olykor „társadalmi" elvárásoknak ("domesztikálódtak" a gyerekbandák), olykor még a serdülővilág saját kultúra- és közösségteremtő szükségleteinek. Vajon a globalizáció, a posztmodern sokszínűség, generációs csalódások kapitalizmusban, szocializmusban, de még a "harmadik utakban" is, az államok tehetetlen cinizmusa, a technika beláthatatlan fejlődése, a gyerekek növekvő „jólléte" vagy éppen növekvő romló életkörülményei voltak-e domináns ágensek abban, hogy a XXI. századra ezek a kezdeményezések elkoptak, diszfunkcionálissá lettek? Választ keresünk arra, mi a mégis kitartók ethosza? Melyek a zsákutcák? Igaz-e az „egyszemélyes csoportról", a „nemzedéki magányról", a „közösséghiányos társadalomról" szóló bármelyik apokaliptikus vízió? Mi van helyette? A gyerekközösségek hiányáról többféle, jobbára sajnálkozó értelmezés létezik, aki sajnálkozik, jobbára a „romló világot" okolja. A tanulmány szembenéz a jelenséggel, talál történelmi-társadalmi okokat a gyerekközösségeket szolgáló intézményrendszer romlásában, hiányaiban, ám szakemberi távolságtartással mégiscsak az ifjúsági kultúra több okkal magyarázható totális átalakulását tartja elemzésre érdemesnek.
