Abstract:
Idioms of distress have become a central construct of anthropologists who aspire to understand the languages that individuals of certain sociocultural groups use to express suffering, pain, or illness. Yet, such idioms are never removed from global flows of ideas within biomedicine that influence how cultural idioms are conceived, understood, and expressed. This article proposes a preliminary model of ethnopsychology described by urban Kenyans, which incorporates local (traditional) and global (biomedical) idioms of distress that are both distinct and overlapping in symptomology and experience. This ethnopsychology was generated from analyzing 100 life history narrative interviews among patients seeking care in a public hospital in Nairobi, Kenya, which explicitly probed into how people experienced and expressed the Kiswahili idioms huzuni (roughly translated as sadness or grief) and dhiki (stress or agony) and English terms stress and depression. Kufikiria sana, or “thinking too much”, emerged organically as a powerful cultural idiom and as a symptom or sign of other forms of psychological distress. We propose a preliminary model of ethnopsychology that: 1) highlights social and political factors in driving people to express and experience idioms of distress; 2) reveals how the English terms “stress” and “depression” have been adopted into Kiswahili discourse and potentially have taken on new meaning; 3) suggests that the role of rumination in how people express distress, with increasing severity, is closely linked to the concept of “thinking too much”, and; 4) emphasizes how somatization is central to how people think about psychological suffering.

Abstract:
Ethnic cultural conceptualizations of consciousness often posit souls or other spirits, but these do not always address consciousness itself. This article describes an autochthonous model of consciousness that was current among the Asabano people of central New Guinea before first contact in the mid-twentieth century. In their conceptualization, one's own souls were not seen as essences of the self or agents of personal awareness. Rather, they merely inflected awareness, which was understood to occur in the heart. This autochthonous model of consciousness attributed selfish impulses and bodily strength to a 'little soul' and generous inclinations to a 'big soul'. The heart was the seat of thought and feeling and the recipient of the souls' proddings, and sensory perceptions originating in other body parts.

Abstract:
The conceptual foundations and ontology of cognitive neuroscience are rarely analysed in cross-cultural perspective, although they are manifestly the outcome of historical currents in specifically Western psychological science. How robust such concepts are, and how generalizable to other cultures, is thus quite problematic. Users of empirical techniques in imaging neuroscience are now actively exploring such topics as attention, volition, emotion and empathy, but with little awareness of how well or badly these concepts can be translated. This essay addresses issues of cultural bias and the potentially misleading use of extended metaphors in the typical deployment of mentalistic terminology, and suggests that there may be alternative conceptualizations, perhaps inspired by phenomenology, which would have less cultural baggage. Ultimately, the most scientifically useful ontology for interpreting and predicting human action may result from an integration of high quality ethnographic reports of mentalistic concepts and terminology found in other cultures. Social and cultural anthropologists are urged to prioritize the identification of such concepts during their fieldwork experience.

Abstract:
The article is devoted to the main methodological problems of qualitative research in the psychology of culture. Methods of ethnographic (field) observation were borrowed by psychology from social and cultural anthropologists in the first half of the twentieth century, and in modern research practices there is a special ethnographic direction that claims to analyze behavior and lifestyle in various subcultures and communities. According to the disciplinary structure proposed by T.G. Stefanenko, ethnopsychology includes the following areas: psychological anthropology, cross-cultural, cultural, and indigenous psychology. Qualitative methods are more typical for cultural and indigenous psychology, while quantitative and mixed methods are more typical for cross-cultural research. The prospects of a qualitative approach in ethnopsychology are discussed in the example of the study of the cultural determination of coping. The results of thematic analysis of narratives and free-form interviews of respondents from Moscow and Tashkent allow us to conclude that the key cross-cultural difference in coping behavior is the degree of its individualization: representatives of Uzbek culture are focused on receiving support and care from significant Others, and not on independent internal work (unlike Russian respondents). At the same time, they are not satisfied with the traditional prescriptions that come from the family environment, which forces them to “invent” coping practices that go beyond the boundaries of normative social (often religious) ideas. This can be interpreted from the point of view of the process of modernization of Uzbek culture, which is gradually becoming individualistic, and the latter circumstance requires the construction of flexible coping strategies in the situation of social and cultural changes.

ABSTRACT: The Quota Law is a milestone towards inclusive public university. However, this model may not contemplate cultural specificities. This paper aims to present Amerindian voices about this subject by listening to communities and indigenous leaders in monitoring this policy. We used a qualitative approach specific to Ethnopsychology methodology which consists of explicit implicit comparisons between the Amerindian cultures and Western cultures. The speeches of indigenous speakers in the three editions of the National Indigenous Students Meeting were analyzed. The results show that the access to higher education is a political strategy and that the territory is the main conceptual articulator. The university is experienced in a special way, without necessarily matching to the mold of Western education. The epistemological, pedagogical and ontological contrasts highlighted by them support proposals towards interscientism and interculturalism. Keywords: Indigenous people, affirmative action, higher education, ethnopsychology.

Abstract:
The study connected with the problem of color vision in the ethnic culture. The focus of the author is the art of folk costume for the indigenous peoples in Tyumen North (Khanty, Mansi and Nenets). Using Luscher color test, the author developed the criteria for the analysis of color symbolism in traditional costume: dominant (primary colors that craftsman presents traditional clothing highlights as a characteristic for their ethnic group and keep it as an ideal which we should follow). This criterion correlated in tests Luscher with a “+” – wants to be; the subdominant (color ornamental symbols that usually tell about the relationship in human world). The criterion is matched, according to Lusero, with the function of “x”, which is as a manifestation of human capabilities in interaction with outside world. Tonic (color accents in the stripes and small details) corresponds the function of “=”, meaning the actions the person performs, and, in the opinion of the author, with ethno-psychological features of master as a representative of the national community, ethnic group. The author thinks that base on criteria helps to perform color symbolism in traditional costume and to correlate it with the ethnopsy-chology. The article considers the traditional women's clothing of the Nenets, the Khanty and Mansi from the Museum collections in the cities of Tyumen, Tobolsk, Khanty-Mansiysk, due to their greatest authenticity in traditional clothes, especially on the background of modern dynamics suit for indige-nous peoples of the North. Every Museum thing has color analysis on three defined criteria, and then occurred the interpretation of the analysis according to the method Luscher color diagnostics. As a result there is psychological characteristic of every master and his support in traditions of the ethnic community. It was connected with the characteristics of ethnic groups, the ethnopsychology. The research shows the possibility of correlation in personal and psychological characteristics of traditional masters, based on the analysis of psychological patterns in color perception. The author used the psychology inherent in the ethnic group, considering the relationship between the color codes in traditional costume and the ethnopsychology of people in the North.

Abstract:
Modern globalisation processes, the rapid entry of Russia into the world community, have given more opportunities to interact with various ethnic groups ranging from short-term tourist and business contacts to complex processes of migration and emigration. Migrants and visitors have different goals for staying in a new country, meanwhile the researchers note a lot in common within the adaptation processes of both groups. In particular, tension, stresses and experience of cultural shock during adaptation are observed. Therefore, it is necessary to conduct psychological studies not only of migrants who come for a long time to a new country, but also of visitors, i.e., interns, students who come to study in foreign universities. Anyway, all migrants face difficulties in interacting with local residents whose behaviour cannot be predicted. The host country’s customs often seem mysterious to them, and people seem strange. Keywords: Adaptation, bologna process, ethnopsychology, exchange students.

Abstract:
Literature about family caregivers of the elderly identify abnegation as a main attribute in those who assume the caregiving role. This characteristic comes at the expense of their own physical and/or emotional health; however, no psychometric instruments have been developed that study abnegation within large caregiver samples which can in turn generate evidence that could be integrated into comprehensive models of well-being in caregivers. Aided by the theoretical frame and empirical background of Mexican ethnopsychology, an abnegation scale was designed and applied to two caregivers samples (n1=115; n2=351), using non probabilistic sampling. Exploratory factor analysis revealed two dimensions that explained 60% of test variance: Self-modification to avoid familiar tension and Self-denial to meet family needs. Factor analysis through structural equation modeling confirmed the submitted measure model, in accordance to the following goodness of fit indexes: SRMR = .039, RMSEA = .062, CFI = .971, GFI = .975, NFI = .950. The scale showed adequate validity and reliability properties, indicating culturally relevant and conceptually clear factors.

Abstract:
The first published lecture of L.S. Vygotsky, the founder of the cultural-historical theory, is devoted to the problems of ethnopsychology, which are almost absent in his printed works. The basic attention is given to methodology of analysis of psychological features of backward and “culturally distinct” peoples, first of all, of the development of children’s thinking. The Preface highlights the circumstances of researching this topic in L.S. Vygotsky’s laboratory, as well as the relevance of Vygotsky’s work in the light of the current controversy surrounding his legacy in Western “decolonial” pedagogy and psychology.

Abstract:
The paper aims at investigating the demonstration of Russian intuition in the contemporary Russian speculative fiction. The research thesis is that the Russians, both presented in literature and within the frames of the national character studies, manifest themselves as the intuitive introvert type according to Carl Gustav Jung’s classification. For validating the thesis, as far as the proposed literary works are concerned, one should use the instruments offered by cultural literary criticism along with the support of non-literary disciplines, such as intercultural communication and ethnopsychology. Moreover, one should consider also notes on Russian national character taken by Jung himself as well as studies on the sociocultural aspect of the analysed works. A wide range of methods and perspectives allows deep research of the “feeling – intuitive” Jungian scale as manifested within literary characters representing the Russian element (also called Russianness) in the selected works, which belong to the most significant and/or popular pieces of contemporary speculative fiction in Russia.

Abstract:
The complexity of migration flows across the world has led to a redefinition of psychological and social services users. The access of migrants from different cultural backgrounds to clinical services or social health services has diversified the demand for concomitant help. Biases and misinterpretations have been created by unaccustomed professionals in this field, which could lead to serious consequences and invalidate diagnostic and treatment procedures. The purpose of this study is to summarize the evidence about errors or prejudices observed in clinical practices regarding the provision of social health services to people from different cultural backgrounds. Results show three main types of biases: racial stereotype activation, ethnocentrism and micro-aggressions. Some implications on the clinical setting were discussed, as being aware of these biases can help mental health professionals manage communication more consciously with users.
