Abstract:
The academic environment at the University of Copenhagen’s School of Pharmaceutical Sciences may contribute to a separation between ethnic minority students and ethnic Danish students in both social and vocational settings. This article examines how this could affect ethnic minority students’ educational outcomes, and in a worst-case scenario lead to their dropout of the School of Pharmaceutical Science. . A number of suggestions to address the situation are outlined. The article is based on a qualitative pilot analysis carried out as a part of a Master thesis about study practices and pedagogical practices in the Medicine Program at the Panum Institute and the School of Pharmaceutical Science at the University of Copenhagen.

Abstract:
ENGELSK ABSTRACT: Hans Skifter Andersen: Spatial Concentration of Ethnic Minorities in Denmark There are neighbourhoods in Denmark with a high concentration of (certain) ethnic minorities and few Danes, as in other Western European countries. International research about ethnic segregation suggests three main reasons for this: 1. the behaviour of immigrants, 2. the behaviour of natives and 3. the housing market. In Denmark the concentration is closely connected to the housing market, where ethnic minorities have been concentrated in social housing, which often have been located in certain neighbourhoods. Another major reason is that many Danes deselect neighbourhoods with many ethnic minorities. This concentration started in the 1990s but stagnated after 2000 despite further immigration. The reasons can in part be due to changes in the composition of immigrants and the success of urban policies in counteracting segregation, but also as documented in the article, that many earlier immigrants have left social housing. The development in Denmark resembles that described by the so-called ”Spatial assimilation” theory, which claims that new immigrants settle in neighbourhoods with a strong ethnic network, but that over time they leave these areas in pace with their integration in their new country. Keywords: ethnic segregation and concentration, spatial assimilation.

Abstract:
While Sarah Hoagland's conception of a lesbian ethic offers a promising route toward articulating an ethics of resistance, her notion of self in community does not provide a conception of “subject” capable of both embracing political action as fundamental to personal life and explicitly recognizing cultural, ethnic, and sexual multiplicity as central to ethical decision-making. Such a notion can be found, however, in the remarks of later Wittgenstein concerning the “language games” of describing.

Abstract:

Abstract:
Concepts of partnership, marriage and the family of a total of 215 young adults of different cultural backgrounds in Germany are compared. In an initial study, 115 German and Italian, Turkish and Korean young adults of the second migrant generation were interviewed; their achieved educational levels were representative for each group. The prerequisites for establishing a family and the anticipated role allocation within the family turned out to be very different. The Italian und Turkish adults showed a strong orientation towards family traditions and values, whereas the Korean and German participants emphasized individuality and rationality of the individual. In a second complementary study, 100 young adults of the same ethnic groups, who now all had an educational level of comprehensive secondary school, were recruited to investigate the family concepts in these specific groups. The young migrants had developed similar family concepts to those of their German peers. Especially Italian and Turkish women with comprehensive secondary school education revealed significantly different perceptions of the future in comparison to the concepts of the respectivegroups with mixed educational backgrounds.

Abstract:
Purpose – The purpose of this paper is to explore the influence of cultural assimilation – termed “transculturation” – on work ethic perceptions, thus this study examines trends in work ethic across ethnic and generational groups within the USA. Design/methodology/approach – Following a literature review on work ethic, ethnicity, and transculturation, an analysis of variance based on 873 survey responses is presented. The sample includes undergraduate and graduate students at several public universities within the USA. Findings – An empirical analysis supports the hypothesis that the variation of work ethic perceptions within the Millennial generation is significantly less than the variation among older generations. The authors find no significant difference in general work ethic perceptions among Millennial ethnic groups. Research limitations/implications – While the study is conducted using a convenience sample, the demographics are closely representative of the USA labor force. The results suggest that Millennials, while a more diverse ethnic population, exhibit less variation among work ethic perceptions than earlier generational groups. Practical implications – Understanding differences in work ethic perceptions across various ethnic groups is valuable for managers interested in designing jobs that appropriately exploit the full value of a multi-generational workforce. Originality/value – The findings of this study offer new insights into how more recent generations, while more ethnically diverse, exhibit a convergence in perceptions of work ethic.

Abstract:
This thesis concerns the differences in how ethinic groups co-exist in two different environments in the same country, with a focus on the ethno-political. My research questions are: Why are ethnic or interpersonal relations characterized differently in different regions? How and why do conflicts or agreements arise in specific environments? The aim is to understand the connection between inter-ethnic relations and environmentally specific factors. I am concerned with those mechanisms and processes which determine the type of ethnic relation – as conflict or mutual understanding - in specific environments. The thesis uses case studies of two contrasting multiethnic cities with different interethnic relations – Erbil and Kirkuk in Kurdistan/Iraq. My explanatory model consists of four main factors: I) historical factors in terms of critical events; II) institutional factors such as institutional efficiency and security; III) structural factors such as group size, territorial base and different tolerance systems; and IV) social relational factors such as the significance of inter-ethnic contacts and social capital. The empirical work demonstrates that the relations between the above mentioned factors in the respective environments determine the outcome of the inter-ethnic relations. The results show that one factor can be more important than another factor, but how the factors impact upon one another and under what circumstances is of significance. The presentation of environmentally specific differences shows that ethnic groups do not have static boundaries and are not necessarily hostile to one another. Conflict is not the given form of relationship between ethnic groups. That is, the result can be read as a critique of those who necessarily see potential conflicts between groups with cultural differences and those who essentialize cultural groups. In this context one can see a chain of interrelated factors; the relevance of which is dependent on the specific situation. Some of the negative factors that can increase the possibility of conflict and decrease the possibility for peaceful co-existence include: Instability in the political climate; insecurity; institutional ineffectiveness; segregation; undefined relations of power; and an ethnic composition maintaining the balance of power. If these factors combined result in a high level of complexity, which makes ethnicity stand out in terms of ethnic competition, the likelihood of ethnic conflict is significant.

Abstract:
This empirical study aimed to investigate how the care of the elderly in municipality NN (fictive name) works to prevent ethnic discrimination and the experiences with this work. The study was operationalized with a qualitative approach with a psychological point of view. Semi-structured interviews were conducted with both employees and unit managers to compile a holistic picture of the work. The authors conducted a targeted selection of organization and then a convenience sampling. This resulted in eight participants (n = 8) of whom four were unit managers and four were nurses, with a distribution of three men and five women. A constructed interview template was used when conducting the interviews, and for the result a thematic analysis method was used. The findings of the study showed that there is a lack of preventive efforts against ethnic discrimination in municipality NN. The inadequate factors in the preventive work against ethnic discrimination were shown to be information and communication.

Abstract:
This essay is based on an interest in how certain residential areas are portrayed in the public debate as "problem areas" which allows other to stigmatization these neighborhoods with negative prejudices. The residential area Ersboda is one of the major residential area in the Swedish town Umeå, that can stand as an example of this phenomenon.  The unique with the residential area Ersboda is that the area don’t have much problem compare to other areas and it therefore interesting to ask why the residential area Ersboda are stamped with negative prejudices? The purpose of this essay is therefore to create an understanding why and how the residential area Ersboda in Umeå are stigmatised by the surroundings. The essay aims to answer the following questions: • When did the stigmatization of the residential area Ersboda begin? • How does the stigmatization of the residential area Ersboda manifest itself? • What could be the underlying factors for the stigmatization of Ersboda? In this study, qualitative interviews have been conducted with residents and working people in the residential area Ersboda. The result showed that one contributing reasons why Ersboda and its inhabitants become stigmatized is that there is a relatively large influx of immigrants in the 1990s. The second factor is based on the violent disturbances among a small part of the area's young residents during the same time period. The reason why Ersboda still are stigmatized depends possibly not only on the surrounding prejudices about the area's ethnic inhabitans and the media's negative reports. The underlying factor can be due to a power difference between established (the surrounding) and outsiders (those living and working on Ersboda). The conclusion is therefore that the stigma of Ersboda not depend on the number of problems, but rather on the basis that it has established a power relationship between "us" and "them" and where residents lack the means of power to break the stigmatization.

Identity and immigration                                                                                                            - A qualitative study with unaccompanied refugee children Jennie Hamberg Larsson and Matthew McNeill The main purpose of this study is to illuminate and describe how unaccompanied refugee children experience changes and reconstructions to their identity after immigration to Sweden. Using qualitative interviews this study looks at how social relationships in Sweden and a foreign background influence the reconstruction of unaccompanied refugee children´s identity. The base for our analysis is identity theory while roll concepts, social identity theory and concepts of ethnic and national identity are used to give deeper insight into the experiences of three unaccompanied refugee children. Important results found included a connection between the way that identity is formed in relationships, especially with significant others, in the country of origin and how reconstruction of identity develops in the new country with new social relationships. Furthermore the results showed how this reconstruction of identity can be linked to different acculturation strategies that incorporate the importance of an ethnic identity and a national identity. The purpose of this paper is to study why Iraq has not achieved democratic consolidation. Studies are interesting from a statistical scientific point of view again, many researchers are involved in how the process of democratization works and why countries are stuck at different stages. The overall question on which my study is based is: Why has Iraq not achieved democratic consolidation? Another issue that is in the essay is in what phase Iraq is in Rustow's theory? My approach to answering my questions has been to study Dankwart Rustow's democratization theory. His theory is based on the fact that democracy can be created on the basis of four different phases: unity phase, resolution phase, transition phase and consolidation phase. The essay concludes that Iraq is in the transition phase and has not been able to achieve democratic consolidation. The underlying causes have been religious, political and ethnic factors.

Abstract:
The purpose of this paper has been to examine various ethnic stereotypes in two Swedish film adaptations of Astrid Lindgren’s character Pippi Longstocking. I have used a semiotic content analysis and postcolonial theory to investigate: 1) how the ethnic groups are represented in the different materials, 2) if there is a hegemonic relationship between the foreign group and one’s own group, 3) whether there has been a "decolonization" during the twenty years that separate the two films. This study has shown that, in the 1949 adaptation, primarily Africans were produced in a negative light and as biologically inferior in relation to the whites. Furthermore, other ethnic groups, such as Indians, Egyptians, Brazilians, and Danes, were portrayed as scared, alien or different. However, the TV series of 1969 permeates with a greater sense of racial tolerance than its predecessor and, despite remnants of racial stereotyping, the overall tone of the later adaptation feels more progressive.

Abstract:
This dissertation is a study of the changing living conditions for the Sami in Swedish Såpmi (Samiland) throughout the twentieth century with an analysis based on a gender and ethnic perspective. At the turn of the century, the Sami lived as nomadic reindeer herders and were primarily self- sufficient. This changed as the reindeer herders shifted from a self-sufficient lifestyle to a money economy tor a variety of reasons. Over time they became more integrated in the dominant Swedish society and even more dependent on it. Reindeer herding has become increasingly mechanized since the I960's with rationalizations as a result. Even in to the 1990's the industry was the object of streamlining ettorts. A process of masculinization has also occurred and today's reindeer herding is a distinctly male coded profession. Women do not regularly participate in the daily work of reindeer breeding and their ability to have any direct influence on the herding districts (sameby) is limited. This is also largely true in terms of the Sami Parliament, the Sami popularly elected body. The Sami population has experienced unfavorable special legislation and regulation from the State. The population was divided into several different categories with different rights. Sami women were marginalized two-fold and subordinated, partly because of their ethnic affiliation (as Sami) and partly because of their sex (as women). This continues to be true today. The analysis of gender division of labor shows that a married couple had their own autonomous areas of power within the household. The wife was however still subordinate to her husband in his role as master of the family. The older reindeer herding society was not noted for its equality. There was a distinct hierarchy based on sex, age, and social status. Division of labor in modern reindeer breeding is in principle based on the same normative system as the older nomadic society. The study of the ethnic processes in Såpmi shows among other things that from a Sami perspective, a person is Sami who is related to other Sami and whose actions are based on a Sami identity. It is also clear today that there are many different Sami identities, that an individual person draws from a number of such identities and that it is the context that determines which of these are active in any given situation. The Sami identity is sex-based, i.e. there is a difference between a "male Sami" and a "female Sami." Sami women, unlike Sami men, cannot be politically active while also being active based on their sexual identity. Were they to do so, they would be excluded by definition from their ethnic group. Sami women must therefore subordinate themselves as women to be "genuine" Sami. They thereby contribute to their own marginalization and help maintain their own subordinated position in the Sami society.

Abstract:
This is a study about residential segregation in Malmö. The aim is to highlight the segregation that is taking place in the city as a whole. I therefore focus on two residential areas in Malmö which are not often mentioned when speaking about segregation; Västra Innerstaden and Limhamn-Bunkeflo. I present different theories on housing segregation and discuss them in relation to these specific residential areas. I investigate how the socio-economic and ethnic characteristics of the inhabitants in these residential areas are connected to Malmö being a segregated city. The study focuses on households as individual actors and reasons for their migration patterns within the city. It then briefly covers possible neighbourhood effects in the studied areas. Finally, the question is posed why these areas are not subjected to segregation inhibitory interventions.

Abstract:
AbstractIn this volume, both qualitative and quantitative scholars describe their findings on the networks of migrants and their descendants and explore the content of their social ties for educational and labor market success in seven European countries. Some contributions cover decades of work in this field, making this one of most comprehensive books on this topic, both theoretically and empirically. Almost without exception, the authors, although describing various ethnic groups, different geographical and professional contexts and different time periods, are critical of a number of the main arguments about the networks of migrants developed in the field of migration studies. Central in their critique is the question about the importance of co-ethnic or inter-ethnic ties and networks, and their importance to enter the labor market and move up. In the field of migration studies, concepts like integration and assimilation have greatly influenced the thinking of its scholars. The idea that newcomers only become fully integrated in a society when they gain a similar economic position and are in contact with people without migration background, or, in other words, become part of the mainstream, has been a strong and dominant view in our field (Alba & Nee, 2003; Alba, 2009; Portes & Rumbaut, 2001; Portes & Zhou, 1993). People who largely interact with co-ethnics and or work in labor market sectors that are dominated by co-ethnics (ethnic niches) are usually seen as not (yet) fully integrated into their new society. And when this also translates to the native-born children (so-called ‘second generation decline’), this is seen as problematic (Ganz, 1992). In this broader framework on integration and assimilation, Granovetter’s (1973) idea of strong and weak ties has entered the field of migration studies. Lang and Schneider, in this volume, rightly state that it is questionable whether the idea of strong ties – for co-ethnics – and weak ties – for ties with people without migration background – was originally intended by Granovetter to be used in this way. But what is clear, however, is that this idea fitted perfectly with broader theories on integration and assimilation. The importance for newly arrived migrants of strong co-ethnic ties in ethnic networks is generally considered one of the starting pieces of the puzzle laying out the process of assimilation in its first phase. The idea of weak ties, also in its symbolic emphasis on ‘weak’, perfectly suited the still scarce and superficial contacts with people of native descent in the early stages of the assimilation process. Since the concept of weak and strong ties fitted so well with the dominant theories about integration and assimilation (classical, neo and new assimilation), much of what was happening with migrants, and even their descendants, in the labor market was seen through, what many would call, an ethnic lens (Crul, 2016; Dahinden, 2016; Wimmer, 2013). Migrants gained a first foothold in the labor market through strong co-ethnic ties and were slowly moving up through their weak ties, making use of information and resources of people of native descent with whom they had only superficial contact. The idea of strong ties also resonated with the notion that their relations with co-ethnics were more meaningful and profound. There was also a dark side to strong ties. Under some conditions, because of the limited information and resources in the co-ethnic network, for some the strong ties could lead to an ethnic mobility trap.

Abstract:
The article presents some research approaches to the fairy-tale folklore of Bulgarians from the Republic of Moldova. According to author, the fairy-tales texts of Bulgarians from the Republic of Moldova, their semantic, symbolic, and structural features should be researched as a local (regional) variant of Bulgarian folklore. Identification of ethno-cultural markers in the fairy-tales of local Bulgarians on some different levels (such as on the subject, ethno-social and spiritual (church-religious) level) will allow to identify some peculiarities in the adaptation process of Bulgarians that migrated in a new ethnocultural zone. As well as to identify the level of preservation of basic ethnic mentality under conditions of new “mental environment”. Thus, the studying of regional ethnic culture is an interdisciplinary research, which allows to discover how localization in time and space affects ethnic culture in general and oral folk art in particular.

Abstract:
The relevance of the research topic is determined by the fact that the number of people involved in the international migration process is increasing annually. On the one hand, it is important to integrate migrant children into the social and cultural system of the host country. On the other hand, it should be taken into account the issue of preserving of their ethnic and cultural identity. In this regard, preserving ethnic and cultural identity of children who migrate with their parents is an important issue. The purpose of this article is to show the opportunity of using distance education methods in preserving migrant children’s ethnical and cultural identity. The research was carried out in 2016-2017 and on the territory of six European countries and in Belgorod region (Russia), and was based on the use of in-depth interviews as well as focus groups with migrants. The results showed the following. First, migrants have difficulties to maintain their ethnic and cultural identity in the host country, it is especially truly for migrant children who much faster than adults can integrate into the host community and lose their ethnic and cultural identity. Secondly, the Internet provides to children an access to wide range of educational resources regardless of the area of their residence. Most of these trainings are conducted in native language, in the traditional ethno-cultural context. Third, the content of distance learning can be individual, depending on age, previous education, personal interests, etc. Fourth, distance education can be used by migrant children as well as the whole migrant community. Fifth, distance education can include a range of disciplines and activities specific to particular ethno-cultural groups of migrants (linguistics, religious studies, history, literature, cooking, crafts, etc.).

Abstract:
In order to identify existing problems and prospects for the development of the ethno-sports movement in order to further expand the sphere of physical culture and sports in the region, the article analyses the formation and development of ethnic sports in the Sverdlovsk region. The study has been conducted for several years with the employement of such methods as questionnaires and social surveys, the analysis of literature and official documents, the projection method. The survey questions concerned the awareness of students of the Institute of Physical Education regarding the development of ethno-sports in the country and in the region. A low level of awareness of the development of the ethno-sports field among Bachelors of Physical Education was identified, which is a main problem of the subject matter. As a result of the deep research into problems of the promotion of ethnic sports, it was decided to elaborate and implement the pilot project ‘ETHNIC Festival’ aimed at the popularisation of ethnic sports in the city of Yekaterinburg. An analysis of official documents has shown that the region is now actively developing federations for traditional Russian sports, however, they are not very popular among the population. The current activities in the field of ethno-sports are not sufficient to attract the general public to the process. The obtained data indicated the urgency of the popularisation and cultivation of national sport disciplines and competitions. A sociological survey of EthnoFestival participants showed that one of the ways to revive national games and sports is to hold mass events to popularise ethno-culture.

Abstract:
The aim of the study was to identify ethnic differences in the number of CAG repeats of the androgen receptor gene (AR), anthropometric and hormonal indicators in men of three ethnic groups (Slavs, Buryats and Yakuts) living in the Russa. The androgen receptor mediates the effects of androgens on a wide range of organs and tissues in men. The AR is characterized by polymorphism of CAG repeats, which can be an ethno-dependent trait and determine functional and morphogenetic effects of testosterone. The study established the ethnic differences in the length of CAG repeats between the Slavs, Buryats and Yakuts (23, 24, 25 triplets, respectively), as well as in anthropometric and hormonal indicators. LH concentrations were higher in Buryats than in Slavs or Yakuts, but the testosterone level was the lowest in Buryats compared to Slavs or Yakuts.

Abstract:
Coping strategies are actualized in the official activities of law enforcement officers by situations that have an element of injustice, lack of time, difficulties in life situations, unpredictability and uncertainty of official tasks, the peculiarities of relations with management. By studying the ethno-psychological characteristics of coping strategies, the Department of Internal Affairs (DIA) psychologists will provide adequate psychological assistance select competent methods and techniques aimed at the impact of destructive coping strategies and the development of constructive ones. The study aims to research and compare personality coping strategies in different ethnic groups of DIA officers of the CIS countries. The hypothesis of the research: one of the manifestations of ethnopsychological features of the personality of DIA officers of the CIS countries can be considered the differences in the set of coping strategies. The scientific novelty of the research: for the first time, the ethno-psychological peculiarities of coping strategies of the personality of DIA officers of the CIS countries, which are included in the implementation process of professional activity, were studied and revealed. SACS questionnaire was used for the study (S. Hobfall, 1994). The results of the comparative analysis showed significant differences on all scales of the methodology, except for the scales of “entering into social contact” and “cautious actions”, which can be positively assessed, since DIA officers of the studied ethnic groups do not seek to achieve their goals exclusively by influencing the human consciousness by covert, deceptive and violent tactics.

Abstract:
This report is made by students at the International Master’s Programme in Ethnic and Migration Studies (EMS), Campus Norrköping, Linköping University (LiU). Every Spring we give the first-year students the task to apply their knowledge in migration and ethnic relations on a chosen topic. The report is produced during few weeks by the students themselves. This is the sixth issue of REMS – Reports from the Master of Arts program in Ethnic and Migration Studies. This year we focus on the ongoing war in Ukraine and specifically its consequences for Ukrainian refugees fleeing the war, as well as on the Swedish and European reception of refugees. We cover far from all, but some important, aspects of the ongoing catastrophe this war entails for everybody involved. Despite a feeling of powerlessness and despair when war takes over and seem to block our capacity to think and act, it is even more important that intellectuals, researchers, and students, stick to the pens and insist on trying to understand, continue to analyse and investigate what is going on.

Review question / Objective: MiR-196a2 rs11614913 polymorphism has been studied in a wide range of cancers throughout the years. Despite a large number of epidemiological studies performed in almost all ethnic populations, the contribution of this polymorphism in cancer risk is still inconclusive. Therefore, this updated meta-analysis was performed to estimate a meticulous correlation between miR-196a2 rs11614913 variant and cancer susceptibility. Condition being studied: Different types of cancer patients and healthy controls were evaluated to detect the cancer risk in the individual case-control studies. We performed a meta analysis of these case control studies to get a pulled outcome risk.

Abstract:
This Working Paper analyses how violent conflict can enhance or reduce pre-existing forms of marginalisation and second, how new forms of marginalisation emerge as a result of violent conflict. To do so, we focus on the province of Tanganyika in the DRC, where the so-called ‘Twa-Bantu’ violent conflict has been disrupting the education sector since 2012, and secondarily on the province of Ituri, which has been affected by repeated armed conflicts since the 1990s. We use a mixed methods approach, combining quantitative data collection methods and several months of qualitative fieldwork. The study shows that the political marginalisation of ethno-territorial groups is key in understanding marginalisation from education in contexts of protracted conflict. Our results show that the Twa minority of Tanganyika has not only been more exposed to violence during the Twa-Bantu conflict, but also that exposure to violence has more severe effects on the Twa in terms of educational outcomes. We analyse key mechanisms, in particular spatial segregation, and the social segregation of schools along ethnic/identity lines. We also analyse the interaction between ethno-cultural marginalisation and economic, social and gender-related marginalisation.

Abstract:
The article provides an overview of scientific research on the study of migration processes in the Far Eastern regions. The problems of migration, the state mechanism for regulating migration issues, and the peculiarities of interethnic interactions are very topical topics not only at the regional, but also at the national level. In the Russian Federation, studies on these topics have appeared relatively recently. Due to the fact that at the end of the 20th century there was a surge in the ethnic self-awareness of the peoples of the country, together with the intensification of socio-economic transformation processes, there are sharp, often radical, changes in the field of interethnic interactions, in particular, the growth of armed interethnic conflicts, an increase in migration outflows or inflows. etc. Modern scientific research in the field of migration processes is practice-oriented, that is, they are aimed at the implementation of narrow applied problems, there is also an increase in the accumulation of an updated extensive theoretical and methodological base. In particular, studies, for example, concerning the topic of interethnic interactions, are directly related to the topic of ethnic tolerance, which has also become very popular and in demand in the last decade for specialists from various scientific fields - psychologists, ethnographers, lawyers, etc.

Abstract:
What is ethical in research and what are our responsibilities as researchers? Unless you have designed a research project and completed ethics requirements yourself it may be difficult to know how the process works, especially in community-based research. As a Research Assistant on a project, you might not know what your own responsibilities are and why it might even matter to you. In this session, we will consider the ethical responsibilities of the research team when participating in community-based research projects. You’ll see the big picture of the ethics requirements in research in Canada linked to Universities and communities. Through working through a case-study, we will think more specifically about what it means to recognize and honour our ethical responsibilities to research participants as a research team member.
