Abstract:
The chapters on ethics and / of reading in Ranjan Ghosh and J. Hillis Miller's Thinking Literature across Continents propose two models of responding to literature. Ghosh sees literature as embodying a hunger for Otherness. Miller insists on the ethical authority of a given literary work over the reader, its ethical obligations to the characters within and to the readers it addresses, and the ethical acts and decisions of the characters within the work. Ghosh's account of literature as hunger opens up aesthetics to the question of the ethical, including the ethics of representation, reading, and Othering. Along with Miller's formula for reading ethically, the two chapters offer us an approach that may be termed, after Kwame Anthony Appiah, cosmopolitan reading, made possible by the sympathetic imagination that literature embodies.

Abstract:
This study aims to determine the role of ethical leadership in bilding a healthy and sustainable company. This study also aims to explore the perspectives of Heifetz and Burns regarding ethical leadership, explore the dark side of ethical leadership, and analyze the principles of ethical leadership. The library method approach or literature study was used in this study, by utilizing various sources of literature to obtain data. The qualitative approach was chosem because the data produced is in the form of descriptions or words. The results of this study indicste that ethical leadership plays a very important role in the success of an organization. Strong leadership ethics can help organizations increase trust, motivate employees, reduce the risk of violations of law and ethics, increase competitiveness, and strengthen organizational culture. The dark side of leadership ethics, such as the abuse of power, must be avoided so as not to damage the image of the organization. Ethical leadership principles, such as integrity, honesty, and responsibility, are also very important for a leader who has good ethics can bring the company to the peak of success by exploiting the potential possessed by employee

Abstract:
This study was conducted to determine the current state, and future directions, of research on nursing ethics for nursing students in Korea. The study analyzed and evaluated original research articles that explore nursing ethics issues for Korean nursing students using the integrative literature review method proposed by Whittermore and Knafl. Five Korean databases were searched with queries that combined the terms ‘nursing’, ‘student’, ‘ethic’, and ‘moral’. From the 246 articles published between 2011 and September 2020, 92 were finally selected based on the inclusion criteria and data evaluation. According to the analysis, descriptive studies(75.0%) were the most common designs of article and ethics awareness(37.9%) was the most common research topics. The most frequent keywords were ‘bioethics’, ‘ethics’, ‘(moral) sensitivity’, ‘(critical) thinking’, ‘(ethical) value’, ‘education’, and ‘professionalism’. Most of the research instruments used had been developed in previous studies(88.2%), and the types of journals in which the research was published included those in interdisciplinary medical fields(47.8%), nursing(27.2%), and ethics(10.9%). The number of articles per year has been increasing, especially in 2015 and 2018, and interest in ethical issues and professional ethics has also increased since 2015. This article argues that in order to improve the quality of nursing ethic sresearch, related research should be carried out using a variety of research designs on a wider range of topics, and further develop the knowledge specific to nursing.

Abstract:
“Literature is the teacher of ethics” (Temkov). If one assumes that literature reflects life, then it only serves to pedagogically illustrate classic questions: how one should behave towards one’s fellow human beings, what virtue and vice are, how conflicts arise and how they are to be solved and which are the highest goods are in life. However, literature itself teaches us much more: it touches delicate issues that no other medium would dare to do. Only literary works can delicately, profoundly and provocative handle questions like love, war, guilt, (un)justice. The modern moral standards would not allow Lolita, Tadzio, or Törleß. New theories of literature and ethics focus on the reading process because ‘literary fiction debates norms and values’. In this paper, the attempt has been made to acknowledge the value of theme diversity in literature in order to broaden the limits of moral dilemmas, but also to discuss the cultural influence, as well as the role of the narrative, author and reader in the comprehension of ethical questions. Bernhard Schlink’s “The Reader” and Peter Handke`s “Winter Journey” are only the tip of the iceberg concerning a much broader topic realm.

Abstract:
Background: Little is known about case managers’ ethical issues and professional values. Objectives: This article presents an overview of ethical issues in case managers’ current practice. Findings are examined in the light of nursing ethics, social work ethics and principle-based biomedical ethics. Research design: A systematic literature review was performed to identify and analyse empirical studies concerning ethical issues in case management programmes. It was completed by systematic content analysis of case managers’ national codes of ethics. Findings: Only nine empirical studies were identified, eight of them from North America. The main dilemmas were how to balance system goals against the client’s interest and client protection against autonomy. Professional codes of ethics shared important similarities, but offered different responses to these two dilemmas. Discussion: We discuss the respective roles of professional and organizational ethics. Further lines of research are suggested.

Abstract:
This research is a literature review that presents a holistic picture of the impact of unethical behavior in a business context. The impact of unethical behavior includes implications for companies, employees, consumers and society in general. This literature review analyzes the consequences of unethical actions, explores ethical frameworks that can assist in addressing unethical behavior, and presents relevant business ethics principles and ethical theories. Professional ethics, business law, and the development of business ethics theory are also the focus of this research. Apart from that, this research also covers other topics such as ethical leadership, transparency practices, accountability, and implementing clear policies in business. Literature studies show that business ethics plays an important role in overcoming unethical behavior such as corruption, discrimination, and neglect of environmental protection. Apart from that, this research also covers the application of artificial intelligence in information systems, the challenges of non-utilitarian ethics, as well as an analysis of challenges and opportunities in the development of economic globalization in business law in Indonesia. Keywords: Business ethics, leaders, employees.

Abstract:
The aim of the study was to report the results of a systematically conducted literature review of empirical studies about healthcare organizations’ ethics and management or leadership issues. Electronic databases MEDLINE and CINAHL yielded 909 citations. After a two stage application of the inclusion and exclusion criteria 56 full-text articles were included in the review. No large research programs were identified. Most of the studies were in acute hospital settings from the 1990s onwards. The studies focused on ethical challenges, dilemmas in practice, employee moral distress and ethical climates or environments. Study samples typically consisted of healthcare practitioners, operational, executive and strategic managers. Data collection was mainly by questionnaires or interviews and most of the studies were descriptive, correlational and cross-sectional. There is need to develop conceptual clarity and a theoretical framework around the subject of organizational ethics and the breadth of the contexts and scope of the research needs to be increased.

Abstract:
This study constitutes an attempt to isolate and elucidate the event of personal relations in the later writings of Henry James. I argue that James' singularity rests on his treatment of personal relations in a radical and unfamiliar way. The main goal of this piece is, then, to trace the workings of personal relations, and to understand the peculiar way in which they figure and unfold in the later narratives. By reading James through the ethical philosophy of Emmanuel Levinas, I wish to reconstruct James' major phase as primarily "ethical." Levinasian ethics differs from the branches of moral philosophy in its insistence on the absolute priority and exteriority of the ethical relation between persons: its disengagement from the realms of psychology and consciousness. The ethical relation is envisioned as flourishing precisely in the absence of cognition and thought. Rather than relating to one another as potentially knowable beings, then, persons in James and Levinas relate to one another as mutually unfathomable others. I maintain that this breaching of cognition and knowledge essentially characterizes Jamesian sociality. Read through ethics, as divorced from ideas of consciousness, James' major phase finds its meaning outside the traditional reign of James studies, which takes James as the master of complex elaborations on modes of consciousness. Not consciousness but alterity is James' defining feature, and it is through the readings of alterity that the fundamental event of Jamesian sociality emerges as both primary and unique. "Ethics" thus opens up a new horizon in which the Jamesian is no longer synonymous with consciousness, a horizon which transforms the understanding, not only of James in particular, but of literature in general.

Abstract:
The aim of this dissertation is to show that precisely in the indeterminacy of literature we can find the possibility of ethics and it will start with the examination of a work that clearly has a paradoxical nature. The work in question is Sreten Ugričić's Infinitive. The paradox of Infinitive consists in the fact that it is a monograph, but a monograph about a non-existent book. The examination of the paradox on which Infinitive is based will be associated with Maurice Blanchot's analysis of the (im)possibility of literature from his essays “Orpheus's Gaze” and “Encountering the Imaginary.” This dissertation will claim that two most important features of the (im)possibility of literature are: the passage from je to il and the temporal paradox of the time of time's absence. These two features are interconnected: a loss of personality (and the inability to subsume the work of art under terms of decision and intention) leads to a strange realm that is governed by the time of time's absence. This is the realm of imaginary or a place where, to paraphrase Blanchot, language becomes its own image. Through the analysis of specific literary works (Infinitive, Marbot: A Biography and The Lost Estate) this dissertation will try to describe the most important paradoxes of literature. In the final part of this dissertation, through a dialogue between Maurice Blanchot and Emmanuel Levinas, two theses will be formulated: 1.) the passage from je to il will be associated with the impossibility of death. Close reading of Blanchot's reworking of Levinas's concepts will open a perspective according to which art is capable of offering the experience of fundamental alterity. 2.) the time of time's absence will be described as the temporality of artwork, but also as the temporality of the other.

Abstract:
The study of ethics in computer science has gained significant attention in the past decade, particularly with the emergence of new artificial intelligence (AI) systems. Issues such as Privacy, Fairness, and Transparency are receiving greater attention from researchers and the debate surrounding them is gaining momentum. Despite this attention, practical applications of ethical issues within the software development process are lacking. Our purpose is to present a literature overview, identify gaps and suggest areas for future research. For this, we present a tertiary mapping of the literature summarizing the main advances in dealing with ethics in the software development process. We collected and analyzed 8 secondary studies to gain an understanding of this research domain. Among our conclusions, we found that more research efforts are needed to address ethics beyond the software requirements activities.

Abstract:
Modelling ethics is critical to understanding and analysing social phenomena. However, prior literature either incorporates ethics into agent strategies or uses it for evaluation of agent behaviour. This work proposes a framework that models both, ethical decision making as well as evaluation using virtue ethics and utilitarianism. In an iteration, agents can use either the classical Continuous Prisoner's Dilemma or a new type of interaction called moral interaction, where agents donate or steal from other agents. We introduce moral interactions to model ethical decision making. We also propose a novel agent type, called virtue agent, parametrised by the agent's level of ethics. Virtue agents' decisions are based on moral evaluations of past interactions. Our simulations show that unethical agents make short term gains but are less prosperous in the long run. We find that in societies with positivity bias, unethical agents have high incentive to become ethical. The opposite is true of societies with negativity bias. We also evaluate the ethicality of existing strategies and compare them with those of virtue agents.

Abstract:
This theoretical paper will provide a review of the literature regarding the need for ethics in the workplace and how taxonomical ethical development can be used in engineering education. In fact, advocacy to educate for ethics in engineering education by design is discussed as a solution to this problem. By spiraling ethical competency development into engineering education as a body of practice, rather than as a theory of knowledge, it is possible to integrate engineering “hard science” content with engineering “soft science” competency. This means that current programs’ scopes and sequences may remain in place, with recommended changes in pedagogy.

Abstract:
Ethics is a human construction, therefore historical, social and cultural. It is impossible to conceive Collaborative Systems without thinking about ethics, because this is manifested in the practices between us. The largest academic-scientific event dedicated to the field of CS in Brazil is the Brazilian Symposium on Collaborative Systems. Through a Systematic Literature Review, we aim to answer the question: what is the panorama of the explicit occurrence of ethical aspects in the publications of the main track of the SBSC? Considering the importance of ethics associated with free, conscious and intentional human practice in a collective and collaborative scope, how are ethical aspects considered, if any, in the communications of these researches? In this sense, what was initially proposed as an Systematic Literature Review became a stimulus to reflection, why are ethical aspects neglected? More than that, is there any way to improve ethical deliberation or is this neglect a symptom of the current political-scientific state of the event?

Abstract:
As artificial intelligence (AI) technologies continue to influence our daily lives, there has been a growing need to ensure that AI enabled decision making systems adhere to principles expected of human decision makers. This need has given rise to the area of Machine Ethics. We formalise several ethical principles from the philosophical literature in the situation calculus framework to verify the ethical permissibility of a plan. Moreover, we propose several important properties, including some of our own that are intuitively appealing, and a number derived from the social choice literature that would appear to be relevant in evaluating the various approaches. Finally we provide an assessment of how our various situation calculus models of Machine Ethics that we examine satisfy the important properties we have identified.

Abstract:
Globalization, the coalescence of the economies and cultures of this planet, has raised new ethical issues. Information Technology (IT) is an enabler of globalization, but IT also produces new ethical problems. There is already a substantial literature in philosophy and political theory on globalized ethics, but not much on IT’s special impact on globalized ethics. This paper is a sketch of the main argument of a book I am writing on this topic. I first give examples of to show how these IT-enabled global ethical problems come about. Then, in the second and third parts of the paper I briefly summarize the main theories of globalized ethics and show their inadequacies in dealing with IT-enabled global ethical problems. In the final part, I sketch a social contract approach which can begin to deal with these IT-enabled global ethical problems. This approach derives from the work of John Rawls (1999a) on justice.

Abstract:
Review question / Objective: What are the ethical and practical considerations of gaming interventions in mental health? What existing viewpoint, commentary or theoretical points have been made in the literature regarding ethical issues in the development of serious games? What benefits and risks of games development in mental health are discussed in the literature? How are the core healthcare ethical principles of beneficence, non-maleficence, autonomy and justice discussed as relating to applied games in mental health? How might this information inform future thinking regarding the ethical development of serious games in mental health? Information sources: The search was conducted across four electronic databases covering science and arts and humanities titles: Scopus, PUBMED, PsycNET, EthxWeb and additionally, the journal, Game Studies, which contrary to other gaming journals does not exist in any of these databases. Given the recency of games design in this area, the search was limited to the preceding 30-year period, til January 2023, where available.

Full text
Abstract:
This report contains a summary of past research and new knowledge about the effectiveness of mitigation measures aimed at reducing animal-vehicle collisions and at providing safe crossing opportunities for wildlife. The measures are aimed at terrestrial large bodied wild mammal species, free roaming large livestock species (e.g. cattle, horses), free roaming large feral species (e.g. “wild” horses and burros), and small animal species (amphibians, reptiles, and small mammals). While mitigation is common, it is best to follow a three-step approach: avoidance, mitigation, and compensation or “off-site” mitigation. If reducing collisions with large wild mammals is the only objective, the most effective measures include roadside animal detection systems, wildlife culling, wildlife relocation, anti-fertility treatments, wildlife barriers (fences),and wildlife fences in combination with wildlife crossing structures. If the objectives also include maintaining or improving connectivity for large wild mammals, then wildlife barriers (fences) in combination with wildlife crossing structures are most effective. Measures for large domestic mammal species are largely similar, though for free roaming livestock there are legal, moral and ethical issues. For small animal species, temporary or permanent road closure and road removal are sometimes implemented, but barriers in combination with crossing structures are the most common.

Haider, Huma. Addressing Political Exclusion of Ethnic Minorities, IDP’s, and Refugees in the Eastern Neighbourhood. Institute of Development Studies, March 2022. http://dx.doi.org/10.19088/k4d.2022.055.

Full text
Abstract:
The quality of political inclusion of ethnic minorities1 in the Eastern Neighbourhood remains a significant challenge, despite institutions in place to promote the rights of national minorities and various programming designed to foster inclusion. This rapid review surveys donor, academic and NGO literature in this field. Literature on addressing the political exclusion of ethnic minorities is limited, with discussion of donor interventions even more sparse. The report thus draws on government initiatives; and on recommendations based on the country situation and international experience, which are not necessarily based on specific programming. There was greater information on Georgia and Moldova, than on Armenia (reflected in the sub-section country titles). In addition, there is limited discussion of programming to address the political exclusion of internally displaced persons (IDPs) and refugees in the region. As such the report relies in part on general research and guidance on IDPs and refugees from a global perspective, including discussion of a few examples of initiatives outside of the Eastern Neighbourhood.

Carter, Becky, and Luke Kelly. Social Inequalities and Famine and Severe Food Insecurity Risk. Institute of Development Studies (IDS), June 2021. http://dx.doi.org/10.19088/k4d.2021.097.

Full text
Abstract:
This rapid review summarises the evidence on the ways in which social inequalities and discrimination affect the risk of famine or severe food insecurity. Looking at the risk at the national and sub-national level, gender and other horizontal inequities can affect a society’s risk of violent conflict and therefore food insecurity, while fragile livelihoods associated with ethnic marginalisation can impact regional food security. At the individual and household level, there is a lack of disaggregated data on people’s social characteristics and famines. There is a broader literature on the impact of systemic discrimination (based on gender, age, disability, sexuality, and ethnic identity) on individuals’ and households’ livelihoods and assets, thereby increasing their vulnerability to food insecurity. A key finding from the literature is the gender gap, with women more at risk of being food insecure than men. Also, some ethnic groups are highly vulnerable particularly in conflict-related famines; starvation is used as a warfare tactic in political and ethnic conflicts. There is evidence of how social inequalities heighten individuals’ risks during food crises and famines, including through exposure to protection threats, while limiting their access to essential services and humanitarian assistance. A broad range of measures seeks to address the multi-dimensional ways in which social inequalities affect vulnerability and resilience to food insecurity.

Ferrand, Alexis. Investors and Taxation: do Companies and Investors Avoid Paying Taxation After a Coup? Institute of Development Studies, March 2022. http://dx.doi.org/10.19088/k4d.2022.076.

Full text
Abstract:
This rapid literature review aims to gather evidence relating to whether investors and companies have actively sought to maintain operations in a country (primarily for profit and livelihood of employee reasons) while avoid paying taxation for ethical or political reasons in the event of a coup or similar regime which lacks credibility with a proportion of the international community. It then explores the literature around the various responses that have occurred following or related to political regimes with significant domestic and international opposition.
