Abstract:
The objective was to describe the research methods and research focuses on ethical dilemmas concerning decision-making within health care leadership. Material and methods. The search was conducted on Medline and PubMed databases (1998–2008). The systematic review included 21 selected articles. Results. The ethical dilemmas concerning decision-making within health care leadership are related to three levels: institutional (particular organization), political and local interface (local governmental structure), and national (professional expertise and system). The terms that are used as adequate to the term of “ethical dilemma” are the following: “continuous balancing,” “result of resource allocation,” “gap between professional obligations and possibilities,” “ethically controversial situation,” “concern about interactions,” “ethical difficulty,” “outcome of medical choices,” “concern about society access to health care resources,” “ethically difficult/ challenging situation,” “(the consequence of) ethical concern/ethical issue.” In qualitative studies, a semi-structured interview and qualitative content analysis are the most commonly applied methods; in quantitative studies, questionnaire surveys are employed. In the research literature, there is a lack of specification according to professional qualification of health care professionals concerning ethical dilemmas by decision-making within health care management/administration. Conclusions. The research on ethical dilemmas in health care leadership, management, and administration should integrate data about levels at which ethical dilemmas occur and investigate ethical dilemmas as complex phenomena because those are attached to decision-making and specific nuances of health care management/administration. In this article, the presented scientific problem requires extensive scientific discussions and research on ethical dilemmas concerning decision-making within health care leadership at various levels.

Abstract:
Practitioners will likely encounter significant ethical dilemmas during their professional careers. As these issues arise, practitioners will be required to analyze ethical issues and evaluate available choices. This case study discusses such an ethical dilemma in the context of aesthetic plastic surgery. The aesthetic provider is confronted with the question of whether or not to provide an ethically questionable procedure. The thought process discussed here can be extended beyond aesthetic medicine to all practitioners facing ethical dilemmas. An analysis of the principles of bioethics was undertaken. The principles of bioethics were then applied to the dilemma faced by the practitioner. Finally, a practical, 4-step system was constructed to be incorporated by the practitioner to guide in making ethically sound decisions.

Abstract:
Abstract: Internal factors play an important role in decision making, especially under ethical dilemma conditions. Therefore, we examine the internal factors of individuals such as gender, age, and level of education in making decisions under ethical dilemma circumstances. This study uses a survey by Aluchna and Mikolajczyk and Eweje and Brunon to collect data. 86 undergraduate and 19 postgraduate students are the respondents for this study. Nonparametric chi-square tests are conducted to test the hypotheses. As a result, women are more ethical than men. Age does not affect the attitude when faced with ethical dilemmas. Moreover, there is no difference in perception between age and level of education toward ethical dilemmas. This study contributes for practical field. Abstract:
Background: Nursing documentation is an essential aspect of ethical nursing care. Lack of awareness of ethical dilemmas in nursing documentation may increase the risk of patient harm. Considering this, ethical dilemmas within nursing documentation need to be explored. Aim: To explore ethical dilemmas in nurses’ conversations about nursing documentation. Research design, participants and context: The study used a qualitative design. Participants were registered nurses from a Patient Hotel at a Danish University Hospital. Data were collected in three focus groups with a total of 12 participants. Data analysis consisted of qualitative content analysis inspired by Graneheim and Lundman. Ethical consideration: This study was conducted in accordance with the ethical principles of research and regulations in terms of confidentiality, anonymity and provision of informed consent. Findings: Ethical dilemmas were strongly present in nurses’ conversations about nursing documentation. These dilemmas were demonstrated in two themes: (1) a dilemma between respecting patients’ autonomy and not causing harm, which was visible in nurses’ navigation between written documentation and oral tradition, and (2) a dilemma concerning justice and fair distribution of goods, which was visible in nurses’ balancing between documenting deviations and proof of nursing practice. Discussion: Ethical dilemmas in nursing documentation regarding respecting patients’ autonomy and not causing harm accentuated discussions on professional responsibility and patient participation in clinical decisions. Dilemmas in justice and fair distribution of goods emphasised discussions on trust in relationships versus trust in electronic health records. Conclusion: Actual tendencies in the healthcare system may increase ethical dilemmas in nursing documentation. Sharing otherwise invisible and individual experiences of ethical dilemmas in nursing documentation among nurses, nurse leaders and decision-makers will enable addressing these in reflections and discussions as well as in considering adjustments of conditions for nursing documentation.

Abstract:
Accountants often face ethical dilemmas, so appropriate ethical decisions and actions are needed. Accounting students must be able to identify ethical dilemmas. This study aims to get an overview of the ability of accounting students to identify the ethical dilemmas faced. This research uses an exploratory method through an in-depth interview with internship accounting students in government and private institutions. The results showed that students currently participating in the internship program could feel and identify ethical dilemmas in their work. They can identify the procurement of equipment and services used for personal purposes, empty notes, and the fraudulent in preparation of financial statements. However, factors of superior pressure, position in work, work environment and organizational culture force them to remain silent and or carry out the ethical dilemma practices they face. These results show that business ethics learning methods have not been able to encourage interns to make decisions and take ethical actions. Abstract:
Small animal veterinarians’ opinions were investigated regarding the frequency and nature of ethical dilemmas encountered, beliefs regarding euthanasia and balancing client and animal interests, prevalence and value of ethics training and proposals to mitigate the stressful effects of ethical dilemmas. The majority (52 per cent) of 484 respondents in the USA indicated via an online survey experiencing an ethical dilemma regarding the interests of clients and those of their patients at least weekly. Scenarios involving client financial concerns were commonly reported causes of ethical conflicts. While only 20 per cent of respondents indicated that other practitioners prioritise patient interests, 50 per cent of respondents characterised their own behaviour as prioritising patients. Most respondents (52 per cent) reported that ethical dilemmas are the leading cause, or are one of many equal causes, of work-related stress. Less experienced practitioners, general practitioners and associate veterinarians were more likely to encounter situations they defined as ethical dilemmas, and female respondents were more likely to find ethical dilemmas stressful. Most small animal veterinarians experience ethical dilemmas regularly, which contribute to moral stress. Results suggested that most small animal practitioners believe that greater awareness of moral stress and providing training in ethical theories and tools for coping with ethical dilemmas can ameliorate moral stress.

Abstract:
Objective: The aim of this paper is to consider the application of principle-based medical ethics to psychiatry. Conclusions: Principles-based medical ethics is a useful tool for resolving ethical dilemmas in psychiatryin that clinical aspects of ethical dilemmas can be better articulated then in other methods. The ethical dilemmas unique to psychiatry, such as those related to impairment of autonomy, present a challenge to the method. After considering a case example, we conclude that psychiatrists can best utilise a principles based approach to ethical dilemmas when they combine this with a level of critical reflection in the light of other ethical theories, such as virtue ethics, as well as close consideration of the clinical and social context of the ethical dilemma.

Abstract:
This thesis examines the ethical challenges faced by technical communicators working in global virtual teams. Virtual teams usage are becoming increasingly more popular and diverse. As a result, it is valuable for technical communicators to understand and recognize the challenges that are faced within global virtual teams in order to find solutions and preventive measures for these challenges. The ethical challenges present in global virtual teams were determined by examining the literature on virtual teams and intercultural ethics and conducting a survey of practicing technical communicators who have experience in virtual teams. The purpose of the survey was to determine the ethical challenges that are present for technical communicators and how these issues were resolved. The survey results reveal valuable approaches to resolving and preventing ethical challenges in virtual teams. This thesis contributes to a better understanding of virtual teams and intercultural ethics and examines the ethical challenges that are faced by technical communicators. Furthermore, the thesis presents preventive measures for addressing ethical challenges. Finally, the thesis also provides suggestions for future research into the ethical challenges that are faced within global virtual teams, particularly those related to cultural differences.

Abstract:

The meaning that Justice has after a conflict in a society might vary regarding the political development and cultural and shared values of a certain society.

Rawls, in his Theory of Justice gives his idea of what justice is and presents two principles of justice that he argues are required to live in a good society: a first principle that secures equal rights and liberties for all individuals and a second egalitarian principle that restrains the consequences of economic inequalities within societies. He also introduces the concept of “overlapping consensus” which I will use regarding the idea of Reconciliation, at the end of this paper.

In the cases presented in this paper (i.e. Argentina and South Africa), essential human rights were violated, therefore wrongdoers made the society unjust.

The aim of this thesis is to elucidate the conditions that are necessary to re-establish justice when a society goes through a conflict. I will introduce some ideas concerning that issue: ideas of retribution, reparation and reconciliation. These are seen as different paths for several countries when trying to tackle to the matter of achieving justice.

In my view, this question can be answered appealing first to an intuitive conception of moral justice that may exist at an individual and collective level, as well.

The ethical dilemmas both levels have are in relation to the harm done, punishments and how to balance them, limiting, for instance, the punishment in order to accomplish a just and a better society. I will also present how shared values can result from a process of reconciliation, which is considered as the ideal alternative to achieve justice.

However, when the equilibrium between members of a community is broken, some people claim that punishment can restore that lost equilibrium that existed before in the community.

Nevertheless, peace, reconciliation and justice cannot be constructed under the basis of silence. One way to keep memory alive is to let survivors, for instance, narrate what they have lived through; telling stories also creates a new space to share with others their experiences, revealing their fears and emotions. Regarding this theme, I will present the NUNCA MAS (Never Again) report, which is fundamental as it gives some testimonies, facts and proposals that will help to reach a consensus and therefore, future reconciliations.

Why is important to achieve justice? Because then members of a certain community will be able to interact in the present with common shared values and thus, deal with the past.

Not to consider reconciliation as one important step to achieve justice, and only think in terms of punishment, instead of giving way to peace and justice, could perhaps promote the possibility of further conflicts. To consider both punishment and reconciliation might just be one possible blueprint in the long and difficult way of searching for a just society.

Abstract:

The purpose of this study is to investigate ethical dilemmas and ethical difficulties experienced by psychologists in Sweden and South Africa. The study is a replication of previous studies conducted by Colnerud (1997) and Slack and Wassenaar (1999). A sample of 295 psychologists in Sweden and 312 psychologists in South Africa were asked to describe situations that they identified as ethically difficult. 53 psychologists in Sweden described 61 incidents and 21 psychologists in South Africa described 24 situations. This corresponds to a response rate of 20% in Sweden and 8% in South Africa. The reported dilemmas were categorized according to a qualitative content analysis developed by Pope and Vetter (1992). The contribution of this study is that the results confirm that confidentiality is a prominent ethical dilemma for psychologists in Sweden and South Africa. This finding is consistent with findings in comprehensive international research. Furthermore, the results indicate that psychologists, especially in Sweden, experience ethical problems due to weakened legitimacy when conducting assessments. The results are discussed taking into consideration the different contexts in which psychologists work, the application of different ethics codes and different levels of ethical awareness. The weaknesses of the study and the method used are also discussed.

Abstract:
This Master´s thesis analyses ethical dilemmas through a theory of three administrative ethics. These three ethics derives from the aspects of sustainable development. The purpose is to combine modern scholars’ requirements of administrative ethics, ideas of how public officials should work and sustainable development as a high ethical goal. Hence the aim is to design an approach and practical understanding of sustainable ethics within public administration. The research applies an empirical and qualitative method, including three elite interviews and a case study. Ethical dilemmas as an ethical phenomenon is used as an analytic tool the can test a practical use of the theory. The interviews are meant to collect experiences from public officials on ethical dilemmas in relation to sustainable development. One case was studied in debt, namely a dilemma situation in Swedish municipality Enköping, where politicians in the Environmental board actively and repeatedly chose not to follow the Environmental Code. A conclusion from the results is that ethical dilemmas in many cases can be illustrate with the theory of sustainable ethics. Moreover, the results show that the interviewees have a restrictive view of how they can and should work as public servants compared with modern scholars’ arguments of more political working public officials. The title of this research ends with a question mark that intend to challenge the reader with a mindset that sustainable ethics requires more than one specific ethic.

Guy, Timothy Michael. "Phenomenology of School Leaders' Experiences of Ethical Dilemmas." Diss., Virginia Tech, 2006. http://hdl.handle.net/10919/81254.

Full text
Abstract:
This research study explores the intersection of school leadership and ethics. This study used the hermeneutic phenomenological approach described by Max Van Manen (1990, 2014) to explore the question: How do school leaders experience ethical dilemmas in their role as school leaders? Hermeneutic phenomenology seeks to find the meaning of a phenomenon, which in this case is the experience of an ethical dilemma. Hermeneutic refers to the interpretive-reflective-analytical component and phenomenological refers to the descriptive concrete life-experience phenomenon component (Creswell, 2007; Van Manen, 1990, 2014; Vagle, 2014). This study looked at experiences recounted by four practicing school leaders and found that the experience of an ethical dilemma involves contemplating (cognition) the uncertainty (chance) about the moral merit (values conflict) of a situation and ones capacity (power) and opportunity (options) to act in response. The lived experience themes of time and being watched were also found to be of particular relevance. These hermeneutic themes were drawn from experiences that the school leaders who participated in the study shared during rounds of conversational and analytical interviews. 'Lived experience is the starting point and the end point of phenomenological research....[which] is to transform lived experience into a textual expression of its essence' (Van Manen 1990, p 36). The experiences include experiences of ethical dilemmas regarding student behavior, teacher supervision, program changes, decisions that other school leaders make, parents, and complex systems with multiple actors.

Abstract:
Background: Modern professional organizations require such researches that are based on certain values. In that context ethics is based on values that guide social workers in their behaviour, decision-making and through relationships with clients, colleagues etc. Ethical issues pervade the work of social workers, as practice often takes place in the context of public welfare systems based on principles of social justice and the public good, and social workers have professional authority in relation to service users. Purpose: To reveal what ethical dilemmas social workers face in their professional activities. Methods: Comparative methods were used in the work, an analysis of ethical codes in professional associations' social work documents in different countries was carried out. Results: In their work, social workers must adhere to ethical standards. However, an ethical dilemma arises when a social worker is faced with one or more conflicting values. For example, the dilemma of intervention or non-intervention. In modern social work, there is a lack of attempts to formulate practical recommendations for social workers who are faced with difficult situations. Conclusion: Key values and principles can come into conflict, and social workers have to make difficult choices about how to act and what role to play. Therefore, the systematic study of ethical dilemmas and the development of practical recommendations can significantly improve the quality of social work. Keywords: social work, ethical values, ethical dilemmas.

Abstract:
The article reveals the importance of the development and maintenance of a state organization’s ethical comfort. The paper explores a psychologist’s ethical vigilance and ethically pro-active behavior. The case study is based on the ethically contradictory circumstances accompanying the psychologist’s work that is determined by conflicting legislative acts, regulatory documents and codes. The article suggests an assisting role of the Ethics Committee as a way of resolving ethical dilemmas.

Konstantinou, Efrosyni. The Blind Spot: A Study on the Ethical Dilemmas that Senior Leaders and Experts Face in Collaborations Designed to Address Grand Challenges. Association for Project Management, January 2023. http://dx.doi.org/10.61175/xpri9143.

Full text
Abstract:
Since 2018, this study has set out to explore whether the project management profession was ready to address Grand Challenges. This is because the political legitimacy of a newly chartered profession in society depends on the extent to which it contributes to addressing challenges, such as climate change, poverty, lack of sanitation, healthcare, human space exploration and blockchain. Therefore, 62 trailblazers of Grand Challenges Collaborations (GCCs) in medicine, engineering, IT, academia and government were interviewed on the ethical dilemmas they face in GCCs and what they do to overcome them. Our study shows conclusively that ethics is the blind spot of GCCs. Like driving your car at great speed on the motorway where the course of travel can’t change except at specific, far-in-between junctions, GCCs reflect high value, high profile projects where the stakes are high, with little, if any, leeway to changing the purpose of the project. In the same way that upcoming traffic will hide in the blind spot in your rear-view mirrors and can cause a fatal accident when you are changing lanes at high speed, ethics remain in the blind spot of GCCs, and when violated can cause uncontrollable, material damages. In the driving seat, are GCCs trailblazers, that this study defines as senior leaders and experts whose power and influence are formidably channelled in strategically managing GCCs.

Abstract:
While shock-responsive social protection (SRSP) has become popular in global and national development discourses, its operationalisation in fragile and conflict-affected situations (FCAS) remains more limited, yet it is arguably here where it could meaningfully contribute to wider nexus approaches. By exploring experiences in a range of countries, the paper explores what is known about the use of SRSP in FCAS, and identifies further areas of potential research for the BASIC Research programme. It also assesses the state of knowledge regarding a number of key questions being raised among stakeholders, namely: What is known about navigating the ethical and political dilemmas around attempting SRSP in FCAS? What is known about the specific requirements for displaced populations and other excluded or vulnerable groups? What is known about when it might be ill-advised to attempt SRSP in FCAS?

Roberts, Tony, and Becky Faith. Digital Aid: Understanding the Digital Challenges Facing Humanitarian Assistance. Institute of Development Studies, March 2021. http://dx.doi.org/10.19088/ids.2021.030.

Full text
Abstract:
The UKRI Digital Aid workshop on 9 September 2019 brought together expert practitioners and researchers to focus on the use of digital technologies in humanitarian aid. Participants brought wide experience of digital applications to monitor conflict, refugees, food security, and to reunite families, enable communication and increase donor value for money. The event identified key areas where the rapid pace of technological change is outstripping our current understanding of emerging risks, digital inequalities and ethical dilemmas associated with the use of digital technologies in humanitarian response. The International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) in their contribution to the UN Secretary-General’s High-Level Panel on Digital Cooperation warned that it is of critical importance to ‘keep humanitarian purpose, and the people humanitarian organizations are there to protect and assist, firmly at the centre of any developments in order to ensure the humanitarian response do no harm in their application’ (ICRC 2019). Yet workshop discussions showed how humanitarian practitioners are struggling to operationalise the “do no harm” principle in the context of a rapidly changing technological landscape. Workshop participants felt that research has a vital role to play in protecting the interests of vulnerable communities in the digital age.
