Abstract:

Abstract:

Abstract:
This article comes after a thorough study for a PhD dissertation on a book by Jean Etxepare (Beribilez, 1931). A comparative study is drawn between Jean Etxepare and Pío Baroja with the aim of finding their coincidences and differences. This research is based mostly in their basque identitary ideology, even though some attention is also paid to some philosophical issues. Both writers are part of the same European intellectual ambiance, and both are empathetic to the Basque Country. Broadly speaking, it can be said that their literary work was heavily determined by the profile of their hypothetical readers, as Jean Etxepare wrote mainly for Basque language speakers and Pío Baroja addressed his writings to Spanish ones.

Abstract:
It has been argued that Antonio Machado was a late-comer to the so-called Generation of ‘98 and that, with his Campos de Castilla of 1912, he belatedly joined the general chorus for reform of his contemporary writers (Azorín, Baroja, etc.) and began to voice concerns with the backwardness of Castilian rural life and ‘the problem of Spain’ already broached earlier by the so-called Generation of ’98. In effect, Campos de Castilla continues much of the style of his earlier work with added realism. Only three poems of the forty-six of the first edition have explicit reference to a concern for Spain’s decline. With detailed reference to the poems, this article argues that the assertion that Machado was involved in the so-called reformist programme of the Generation of ‘98 needs to be called into question and that Machado in the Soria period was less than the reformist critics have claimed him to be.

Abstract:

Climate variability and occurrence of extreme weather events are the major concerns for socio-economic well being of the region. During the period March to May 2010, Gujarat experienced moderate to severe heat wave condition with record number of days with heat waves in most of the districts of Gujarat. This study was undertaken to analyze the decadal climatology of extreme high temperature conditions over Gujarat. The decadal analysis carried out in the study indicated that the number of moderate heat wave days and severe heat wave days are highest in the last decade as compared to earlier three decades in more than 70 per cent of the stations. The districts of Ahmedabad, Baroda, Rajkot, Banaskantha (Deesa) and Sabarkantha (Idar) show increase in moderate heat waves in the last decade (2001-2010). Various IMD Stations like Baroda, Deesa, Kandla and Idar have recorded all time highest temperatures in the last decade. The summer maximum temperature anomalies of five non coastal stations of Gujarat also indicate a high positive anomaly (upto 4 °C) prevalent in the last decade. The paper also analyses the synoptic condition during the severe heat wave of May, 2010.

Abstract:
This article is a critical appreciation of Raghav Kaneria’s welded sculptures done in scrap metal, mild steel, and stainless steel since 1962 to 2016.Though he has worked on many mediums like terracotta, bronze, wood, scrap metal, cement, assemblage etc. but in this article, I would like to concentrate only one medium and that is ‘sheet metal’ in its different forms like mild steel, stainless steel, and scrap metal. I have divided these works into three different phases depending on the style and treatment of his works and subject matter. His first phase works were mostly done with scrap metals where found objects were welded together to create new forms. Many of these works were done when he was studying in Faculty of Fine Arts (Vadodara) and later in a Mumbai factory. These works have a rugged quality of the scrap metal sculptures with its strange primitive vitality. His second phase works were the smooth polished surfaces of abstract forms which he calls ‘sprouting’, done during his studies in Royal college of Art, London and during his teaching period in Waltham Forest Technical College, London and Hull College of Art, London. These sculptures consist of smooth tubular forms created in mild steel which were not an assemblage of direct forms, but a meticulous execution of forms inspired by nature. His third phase is the sensuous, simplistic, and decorative forms of Bull which he calls ‘Nandi’. They were done in stainless steel sheets in Baroda, between 2014- 2016. These forms in stainless steel were created using huge flat steel sheets joined together by welding. They are simply called the Nandi forms. These three phases have different approach of execution. In this article I have tried to bring together a selection of his oeuvres made in ‘metal sheets’ but with very different approach in each series evoking diverse expressions.

Abstract:

Abstract:
Pauperism historiography have basically developed two main issues connected to each other:1) The image rich people had of the poor ones and the classification of poverty as a result of that.2) History of the politics concerning the “containment of” and the “aid to” the needy and the institutions charged with this task. Core of this historiography have been for long time Institutions, functioning of the charity policies and of repressive and assistive devices activated with the respect of some kind of poor. Nevertheless, in the last two decades several scholars have tried to further inquire poor’s action, their daily life and survival strategies enacted by them in order to escape the poverty stranglehold, especially aiming to fill documentary gaps insofar observed through a renewed use of the official sources. According to this investigation perspective in this work we focus on the daily strategies of roman beggars at baroque age, facing this thematic through the analysis of the presence of those into the urban space. The thesis hereby aims to understand which place poor people occupied in baroque Rome city life, which specific conditions brought these people living, crossing and “appropriating” specific locations rather than others. It’s with the expression “place” of the beggars, indeed, that here are intended not only the sites where they begged for alms (churches, inns, squares) but mainly town zones particularly populated by them (districts, neighborhood, borough). Geographical setting, housing features and agency into the urban space of these persons are in fact still an unexplored aspect of modern Rome’s historiography

Abstract:
The specificity of Pío Baroja's discourse is imputable to his ideology. The confrontation of two of his trilogies - The Struggle for Life presenting urban themes and Tierra Vasca offering rural ones - seen through their textual characteristics is proof of that. A studied coherence seems to emerge from the mere incoherence so often disparaged by the critics. The literary devices and the narrative strategies - brought into play by the author in order to organize the fictional microcosm through the space-time marks - offer similar features that give a structure to a single and unique vision of the world, that of turn-of-the century Spain’s decadent universe perceived through its most trifling details. According to the author, it is possible to modify this universe through strong, individual, wilful action. But the writer's work does not stop at that point. It shapes the way people are expected to read and postulates the typical recipient who is aimed at and compelled to act, namely the living citizen of Madrid. The author's concern for the absolute clarity of the message conveyed and the refusal to take the literary aspect of the fiction into account in order to force the reader to play a part in the story, lead to some constants. Two books performed this duty: La Busca and Zalacain, the Adventurer. They received great acclaim when first published and were largely diffused. Some readers took the second book's hero as their model. The other books are not yet clearly perceived by their actual readers

Abstract:

Abstract:
Through the selection of six representative typical Swedish chairs from each era, I present manufacturing techniques and how the craftsmanship has affected the style of the chairs over time. My main source material is the objects themselves. I chose to analyze the constructions and what can distinguish them apart in techniques, material choices, aesthetics and design. The main part of my work has been to find out what are the most occurring damages and its causes. Most damages from renaissance to biedermeier can be linked to the mortise joint. Through interviews with experienced conservators and with my own experiences as a cabinet maker and conservator, I discuss the concept of the ultimate chair design in terms of stability. I have come to the conclusion that the most solid chair is the eight to twelve framed chairs from the Renaissance, but the chair must be adapted to the intended use.

Abstract:
During the period of Saxon-polish union, Henry Count of Brühl attained an extraordinary position at the court of Dresden. From donzel to Prime Minister and favourite of August III, he had been working on his social and political fo 25 years. "Second Man" of Dresden, he not only defined domestic policy and foreign affairs but cultural policy as well. As the Director of the acquisitions of the royal gallery, the director of the porcelain manufactory and the director of the Opera at Dresden, he occupied key positions in cultural live. The thesis at hand examines different parts of the count's cultural management. Artistic engagement was an indispensable requirement for social success at court. Connoisseurship in the arts and sciences were necessary for the career of a courtesan, and the constitution of collections exposed this mark of distinction. Hence Brühl wasn't only content with luxurious castles but also promoted, in addition to his career, the accumulation of various collections

Abstract:
Chapter 14 was concerned with gas-liquid reactions, although it was mentioned at the beginning of the chapter that the same principles would apply equally if phase 1 were a liquid or a solid. The premise for such a statement was that phase 1 comes into the picture only to the extent that it supplies the solute A that diffuses into phase 2 and reacts with B in the film, bulk, or both, in that phase only. Because the state of phase 1 is immaterial in such a situation, the theories are equally applicable when the phase is a liquid or a solid. However, an additional factor comes into play when phase 1 is also a liquid. Component B from phase 2 can have a finite solubility in phase 1, diffuse into that phase and react there with A. Thus reaction can occur in both phases. This is equally true when phase 1 is a solid, but the mechanism of diffusion and reaction in a solid is different. It is also possible for a gas and a solid to simultaneously dissolve and react in a liquid, but as three phases are involved here, it is considered in Chapter 17. In this chapter we consider the following two classes of reactions: liquid-liquid and solid-liquid. One encounters reactions belonging to these classes quite frequently in organic chemical technology. We shall give instances of these while dealing with the individual systems. Hydrolysis and saponification of esters and fats (Jeffreys et al., 1961; Donders et al., 1968; Sharma and Nanda, 1968), sulfonation and nitration of aromatic compounds (Albright and Hanson, 1969, 1975; Hanson and Ismail, 1976; Barona and Prengle, 1973), alkylation of isobutane, toluene, and phenols with isobutylene (Jernigan et al., 1965; Mosby and Albright, 1966; Sprow, 1969; Tiwari and Sharma, 1977; Zaldivar et al., 1996), and oximation of cycloyhexanone (Rod, 1974, 1976) are some of the liquid-liquid reactions in which reaction occurs in both phases. The reaction last mentioned between cyclohexanone (which constitutes the organic phase) and aqueous hydroxylamine sulfate (containing ammonium sulfate) to give cyclohexanone oxime comprises the first step in the manufacture of caprolactam, an important reactant in the synthesis of Nylon.

Abstract:
A key objective in petroleum resource evaluation is to estimate oil and gas pool size (or field size) or oil and gas joint probability distributions for a particular population or play. The pool-size distribution, together with the number-of-pools distribution in a play can then be used to predict quantities such as the total remaining potential, the individual pool sizes, and the sizes of the largest undiscovered pools. These resource estimates provide the fundamental information upon which petroleum economic analyses and the planning of exploration strategies can be based. The estimation of these types of pool-size distributions is a difficult task, however, because of the inherent sampling bias associated with exploration data. In many plays, larger pools tend to be discovered during the earlier phases of exploration. In addition, a combination of attributes, such as reservoir depth and distance to transportation center, often influences the order of discovery. Thus exploration data cannot be considered a random sample from the population. As stated by Drew et al. (1988), the form and specific parameters of the parent field-size distribution cannot be inferred with any confidence from the observed distribution. The biased nature of discovery data resulting from selective exploration decision making must be taken into account when making predictions about undiscovered oil and gas resources in a play. If this problem can be overcome, then the estimation of population mean, variance, and correlation among variables can be achieved. The objective of this chapter is to explain the characterization of the discovery process by statistical formulation. To account for sampling bias, Kaufman et al. (1975) and Barouch and Kaufman (1977) used the successive sampling process of the superpopulation probabilistic model (discovery process model) to estimate the mean and variance of a given play. Here we shall discuss how to use superpopulation probabilistic models to estimate pool-size distribution. The models to be discussed include the lognormal (LDSCV), nonparametric (NDSCV), lognormal/nonparametric–Poisson (BDSCV), and the bivariate lognormal, multivariate (MDSCV) discovery process methods. Their background, applications, and limitations will be illustrated by using play data sets from the Western Canada Sedimentary Basin as well as simulated populations.

Abstract:
Experimental adiabatic two-phase pressure drops data for refrigerants R134a, R236fa and R245fa during flow boiling in small channels with internal diameters of 1.03, 2.20 and 3.04 mm are presented. The main purpose was to investigate the effects of channel confinement on adiabatic two-phase pressure drops. Thus, the two-phase pressure drop trends were systematically investigated over a wide range of test conditions for all three refrigerants and channel sizes. Statistical comparisons have also been made by comparing the experimental pressure drop data database with various macroscale and microscale prediction methods from the literature. The comparison showed relatively moderate accuracy for three prediction methods developed for macroscale flows, i.e. Baroczy and Chisholm, Friedel and the homogeneous model with the Cicchitti et al. viscosity relation. As for microscale prediction methods, the Cioncolini et al. annular flow model worked best with 68.5% of the data within ± 30%, followed by the Sun and Mishima and the Zhang et al. methods. Combining this database with the LTCM lab’s earlier database for 0.509 and 0.790 mm channels, there appears to be no evidence of a macro-to-microscale transition, at least with respect to two-phase pressure drops.
