Full textPauperism historiography have basically developed two main issues connected to each other:1) The image rich people had of the poor ones and the classification of poverty as a result of that.2) History of the politics concerning the “containment of” and the “aid to” the needy and the institutions charged with this task. Core of this historiography have been for long time Institutions, functioning of the charity policies and of repressive and assistive devices activated with the respect of some kind of poor. Nevertheless, in the last two decades several scholars have tried to further inquire poor’s action, their daily life and survival strategies enacted by them in order to escape the poverty stranglehold, especially aiming to fill documentary gaps insofar observed through a renewed use of the official sources. According to this investigation perspective in this work we focus on the daily strategies of roman beggars at baroque age, facing this thematic through the analysis of the presence of those into the urban space. The thesis hereby aims to understand which place poor people occupied in baroque Rome city life, which specific conditions brought these people living, crossing and “appropriating” specific locations rather than others. It’s with the expression “place” of the beggars, indeed, that here are intended not only the sites where they begged for alms (churches, inns, squares) but mainly town zones particularly populated by them (districts, neighborhood, borough). Geographical setting, housing features and agency into the urban space of these persons are in fact still an unexplored aspect of modern Rome’s historiography

Full textThe specificity of Pío Baroja's discourse is imputable to his ideology. The confrontation of two of his trilogies - The Struggle for Life presenting urban themes and Tierra Vasca offering rural ones - seen through their textual characteristics is proof of that. A studied coherence seems to emerge from the mere incoherence so often disparaged by the critics. The literary devices and the narrative strategies - brought into play by the author in order to organize the fictional microcosm through the space-time marks - offer similar features that give a structure to a single and unique vision of the world, that of turn-of-the century Spain’s decadent universe perceived through its most trifling details. According to the author, it is possible to modify this universe through strong, individual, wilful action. But the writer's work does not stop at that point. It shapes the way people are expected to read and postulates the typical recipient who is aimed at and compelled to act, namely the living citizen of Madrid. The author's concern for the absolute clarity of the message conveyed and the refusal to take the literary aspect of the fiction into account in order to force the reader to play a part in the story, lead to some constants. Two books performed this duty: La Busca and Zalacain, the Adventurer. They received great acclaim when first published and were largely diffused. Some readers took the second book's hero as their model. The other books are not yet clearly perceived by their actual readers

Full textDuring the period of Saxon-polish union, Henry Count of Brühl attained an extraordinary position at the court of Dresden. From donzel to Prime Minister and favourite of August III, he had been working on his social and political fo 25 years. "Second Man" of Dresden, he not only defined domestic policy and foreign affairs but cultural policy as well. As the Director of the acquisitions of the royal gallery, the director of the porcelain manufactory and the director of the Opera at Dresden, he occupied key positions in cultural live. The thesis at hand examines different parts of the count's cultural management. Artistic engagement was an indispensable requirement for social success at court. Connoisseurship in the arts and sciences were necessary for the career of a courtesan, and the constitution of collections exposed this mark of distinction. Hence Brühl wasn't only content with luxurious castles but also promoted, in addition to his career, the accumulation of various collections
