Abstract:

A means was developed for extending the predictive capability of the Equivalent Single-Tube Model (ESTM) to accurately predict the onset of a self-sustained oscillatory flow instability for a multitube condensing flow system. The model includes the effects of compressibility, subcooled liquid inertia, and thermal and flow distribution asymmetry. Previously, liquid inertia, a necessary mechanism for the instability, had not been modeled for a multitube system. Extensive experimental data was obtained for a two-tube system that verifies not only the predictive capability of the ESTM, but also its accuracy and its wide range of applicability.

Abstract:

In a tube-type condenser involving complete condensation, small changes in the inlet vapor flow rate momentarily cause very large transient surges in the outlet mass flow rate. An Equivalent Single-Tube Model (ESTM), based on the System Mean Void Fraction Model, is developed that predicts these transient flow surges for a multitube system; including the effects of compressibility as well as thermal and flow distribution asymmetry. The model is verified theoretical and experimentally. From a design perspective, the significant value of the ESTM is that it includes the primary physical mechanisms involved in such complex flow transients, yet is simple enough to be solved on typical “spreadsheet” software.

AbstractThis work explores the impact of assimilating radial winds from the Chinese coastal Doppler radar on track, intensity, and quantitative precipitation forecasts (QPF) of landfalling tropical cyclones (TCs) in a numerical weather prediction model, focusing mainly on two aspects: 1) developing a new coastal radar super-observation (SO) processing method, namely, an evenly spaced thinning method (ESTM) that is fit for landfalling TCs, and 2) evaluating the performance of the radar radial wind data assimilation in QPFs of landfalling TCs with multiple TC cases. Compared to a previous method of generating SOs (i.e., the radially spaced thinning method), in which the density of SOs is equal within the radial space of a radar scanning volume, the SOs created by ESTM are almost evenly distributed in the horizontal grids of the model background, resulting in more observations located in the TC inner-core region being involved in SOs. The use of SOs from ESTM leads to more cyclonic wind innovation, and larger analysis increments of height and horizontal wind in the lower level in an ensemble Kalman filter data assimilation experiment with TC Mujigae (2015). Overall, forecasts of a TC’s landfalling position, intensity, and QPF are improved by radar data assimilation for all cases, including Mujigae and the other eight TCs that made landfall on the Chinese mainland in 2017. Specifically, through assimilation, TC landing position error and intensity error are reduced by 33% and 25%, respectively. The mean equitable threat score of extreme rainfall [>80 mm (3 h)−1] forecasts is doubled on average over all cases.

Abstract:

OBJECTIVE: To culturally adapt and validate the SPICTTM to Spanish, which is a brief and simple tool to support a better identification of chronic patients who have palliative care needs. METHODS: For this study, we designed a multicenter and national project between the centers of Galicia, Balearic Islands, and Andalusia. For the process of translation and cross-cultural adaptation of the SPICTTM to Spanish, we followed the steps proposed by Beaton et al. with successive translations and subsequent consensus of experts using the debriefing methodology. After the content validation was completed, the psychometric properties were validated. A prospective longitudinal study was designed with 188 patients from Galicia, the Balearic Islands, and Andalusia. The internal consistency and reliability of the test and retest was analyzed for 10 days by the same researcher. RESULTS: For more than 90% of the participants of the SPICT-ESTM, it seems simple to be filled out, and they consider it written in an understandable language. The average time to apply the questionnaire without prior knowledge was 4 minutes and 45 seconds. To evaluate the internal consistency of the instrument, we used the Kuder-Richardson formula 20. Internal consistency is 0.71. The agreement index of the Kappa test is between 0.983 and 0.797 for the different items. CONCLUSIONS: In this study, we demonstrate the equivalence of content with the original. In addition, the validation of the psychometric properties establishes that the SPICT-ESTM maintains adequate reliability and stability. If we add the satisfaction shown by the professionals and the ease of use, the SPICT-ESTM is an adequate tool for the identification of palliative patients with chronic diseases and palliative care needs.

Abstract:

Photovoltaic (PV) systems are the most promising renewable energy source in Morocco due to its abundant solar irradiation. The Moroccan government has launched various renewable energy programs to encourage the use of PV systems. In this work we present a comparative study in terms of energy produced and the efficiency of a grid connected photovoltaic (PV) system installed on the roof of the building occupied by the “Ecole Supérieure de Technologie de Meknes” (ESTM). The on-grid connected photovoltaic system has a total power of 5860 Watts (Wp). This system provides an average daily reduction of 30 kWh in the consumption of electrical energy at ESTM facilities; this will allow us to save fossil fuels and reduce emissions of greenhouse gas. The average annual production of electric power is estimated at 10.5 MWh, equivalent to burning 0.9 tons of oil, which will prevent the emission of about 2 tons / year of CO2 in the atmosphere. Three different commercial solar modules, manufactured with different materials and technologies in monocrystalline silicon, polycrystalline silicon and amorphous silicon were tested.

ABSTRACT Before about 500 million years ago, most probably our planet experienced temporary snowball conditions, with continental and sea ices covering a large fraction of its surface. This points to a potential bistability of Earth’s climate that can have at least two different (statistical) equilibrium states for the same external forcing (i.e. solar radiation). Here, we explore the probability of finding bistable climates in Earth-like exoplanets and consider the properties of planetary climates obtained by varying the semimajor orbital axis (thus, received stellar radiation), eccentricity and obliquity, and atmospheric pressure. To this goal, we use the Earth-like planet surface temperature model (ESTM), an extension of one-dimensional Energy Balance Models developed to provide a numerically efficient climate estimator for parameter sensitivity studies and long climatic simulations. After verifying that the ESTM is able to reproduce Earth climate bistability, we identify the range of parameter space where climate bistability is detected. An intriguing result of this work is that the planetary conditions that support climate bistability are remarkably similar to those required for the sustenance of complex, multicellular life on the planetary surface. The interpretation of this result deserves further investigation, given its relevance for the potential distribution of life in exoplanetary systems.

Los análisis críticos de “El curioso impertinente” (“El curioso”) han pasado por alto (tal vez por parecer tan obvio) un aspecto fundamental de esta novela intercalada en relación con la obra en que se halla; es decir, su género. Iffland (1987) se refiere a un sinfín de ambigüedades para apoyar su conclusión de que Don Quijote es único en sus contradicciones, y lo que sucede al género de “El curioso” es meramente un síntoma de lo que plaga la obra en general. Por eso se proponen en este presente estudio simultáneamente un cuestionamiento de la clasificación tajante de “El curioso” y una argumentación a favor de su consideración como una especie de corto libro de caballerías temprano. Como pasó con el cuadro del gallo de Orbaneja (II, 3), sólo porque se define “El curioso” como novela, no quiere decir que lo sea o que no pueda ser interpretada como otra cosa. Lucía Megías y Sales Dasí (2008) identifican tres características fundamentales de los libros de caballerías del comienzo del siglo XVI (forma, finalidad y sujeto), y “El curioso” comparte estos rasgos y comporta como si naciera de ese mismo género caballeresco.

Abstract:

Air pollution represents one of the most complex problems of humanity. Traffic contributes significantly to this by emitting large amounts of harmful gases. This problem is particularly pronounced at urban intersections due to frequent changes in vehicle movement dynamics. This paper primarily presents the influence of intersection geometry on pollutant emissions levels. In addition, the influence of various traffic policies promoting greater use of public transport and zero-emission vehicles is also examined. The research combines the field part of recording existing intersections in Sarajevo, Bosnia and Herzegovina with traffic microsimulation. Detailed data on vehicles’ movements were obtained by advanced video processing using the DataFromSky tool, while the PTV Vissim 2022 and Bosch ESTM (2022) software were used to simulate traffic and estimate emissions at geometrically different intersections. The results showed that, in saturated traffic conditions, signalized intersections cause up to 50% lower emissions compared with two-lane and turbo roundabouts and that the impact of the geometric change is more significant than the impact of zero-emission vehicles. In unsaturated conditions, the differences in emissions at different intersections are negligible, with the highest reductions in pollution achieved by using zero-emission vehicles.

Abstract:

In recent years, deep neural networks have achieved great success in many fields, such as computer vision and natural language processing. Traditional image recommendation algorithms use text-based recommendation methods. The process of displaying images requires a lot of time and labor, and the time-consuming labor is inefficient. Therefore, this article mainly studies image recommendation algorithms based on deep neural networks in social networks. First, according to the time stamp information of the dataset, the interaction records of each user are sorted by the closest time. Then, some feature vectors are created via traditional feature algorithms like LBP, BGC3, RTU, or CNN extraction. For image recommendation, two LSTM neural networks are established, which accept these feature vectors as input, respectively. The compressed output of the two sub-ESTM neural networks is used as the input of another LSTM neural network. The multilayer regression algorithm is adopted to randomly sample some network nodes to obtain the cognitive information of the nodes sampled in the entire network, predict the relationship between all nodes in the network based on the cognitive information, and perform low sampling to achieve relationship prediction. The experiments show that proposed LSTM model together with CNN feature vectors can outperform other algorithms.

Abstract:

Objetivos. Evaluar la asociación entre las enfermedades crónicas (EC) y la necesidad de cuidados paliativos (NCP). Materiales y métodos. Se realizó un estudio transversal analítico en un hospital peruano durante el 2019. Se incluyó a pacientes hospitalizados con EC y se excluyó gestantes y a los hospitalizadosen unidades críticas. En la evaluación de la NCP se aplicó el instrumento SPICT-ESTM, adicionalmente se evaluaron características sociodemográficas y clínicas. La fuerza de asociación se calculó con regresiones de Poisson con varianza robusta para estimar razones de prevalencia crudas (RP) y ajustadas (RPa) porconfusores. Resultados. Se evaluó 172 pacientes, la media de edad fue 61 años, donde el 54,7% eran varones y 123 pacientes tenían NCP. En el modelo crudo se encontró asociación con tener enfermedad cerebrovascular (RP: 1,23; p=0,028), cualquier tipo de cáncer (RP: 1,38; p0,001), cardiopatías (RP: 1,29; p=0,007), nefropatía (RP: 1,42, p0,001) y enfermedad de Alzheimer (RP: 1,42; p0,001). La asociación se mantuvo en la mayoría de EC evaluadas en el modelo ajustado, excepto para cardiopatía (RPa: 1,11; p=0,320). La fuerza de asociación fue menor en el caso de diabetes mellitus (RP: 0,78; p=0,044). Conclusión. La NCP en pacientes con enfermedades crónicas hospitalizados es alta y más frecuente en pacientes con cáncer, enfermedad cerebrovascular, problemas renales y enfermedad de Alzheimer. Los programas de cuidado de pacientes con diabetes mellitus pueden disminuir la NCP.

Changes in the expression of genes were observed during development in populations of Anopheles (Anopheles) intermedius and Anopheles (Anopheles) mattogrossensis. Esterase showed seven zones of activity: EST1 was present in all developmental stages of both species; EST2 was observed only in larvae of A. intermedius and larvae and pupae of A. mattogrossensis, with greater activity in pupae; EST3 and EST5 were present in all developmental stages, with greater intensity in larvae; EST4 and EST6 showed weak activity in larvae of A. mattogrossensis and was not found in A. intermedius. Leucine aminopeptidase showed four zones of activity, of which LAP1 and LAP2 were found in all stages of A. intermedius, with highest activity in larvae, and in larvae only of A. mattogrossensis. LAP3 was detected in all stages of A. mattogrossensis and in larvae only of A. intermedius. LAP4 was detected only in larvae and pupae of A. mattogrossensis, with greater intensity in pupae. alpha-Glycerophosphate dehydrogenase showed a single zone of activity, detected in older fourth-instar larvae and becoming more intense from the pupal stage onwards.

Método: o laser de baixa potência infravermelho e comprimento de onda predominante de 880nm (Therapy XT-ESTM, DMC Equipamentos) foi utilizado com potência de 100mW e diâmetro da ponteira 0,0280 cm². A suspensão bacteriana foi ativada em estufa bacteriológica a 37ºC e 5% CO2, durante um período de 18 horas, ajustada para a concentração de 1-2 x 108 unidades formadoras de colônia/mL (UFC/mL). As suspensões foram submetidas aos seguintes protocolos experimentais e controle: grupo 1) LIV 30s; grupo 2) LIV 60s; grupo 3) LIV 90s; grupo 4) NaCl 0,9%. Em seguida, uma alíquota foi retirada para a diluição seriada e semeadura das amostras. As placas permaneceram em estufa bacteriológica a 37ºC e 5% CO2 durante um período de 48 horas para posterior contagem das UFC/mL. O estudo foi conduzido em triplicata. Resultados: os resultados, a seguir, estão expressos em Log UFC/mL: grupo 1 (8,42±0,16); grupo 2 (8,41±0,03); grupo 3 (8,37±0,11); grupo 4 (8,37±0,16). Não foi observada diferença estatisticamente entre os grupos (p>0,05). Conclusão: o estudo mostrou que o laser infravermelho, nas condições experimentais usadas, não demonstrou ação na viabilidade de S. mutans presentes em suspensões in vitro.

Abstract Despite decades of scientific research on the subject, the climate of the first 1.5 Gyr of Mars' history has not been fully understood yet. Especially challenging is the need to reconcile the presence of liquid water for extended periods of time on the Martian surface with the comparatively low insolation received by the planet, a problem which is known as the Faint Young Sun paradox. In this paper, we use the Earth-like planet surface-temperature model (or ESTM), a latitudinal energy-balance model with enhanced prescriptions for meridional heat diffusion, and the radiative-transfer code EOS to investigate how seasonal variations of temperature can give rise to local conditions which are conducive to liquid-water runoffs. We include the effects of the Martian dichotomy, a northern ocean with either 150 or 550 m of global equivalent layer, and simplified CO2 or H2O clouds. We find that 1.3–2.0 bar CO2-dominated atmospheres can produce seasonal thaws due to inefficient heat redistribution, provided that the eccentricity and the obliquity of the planet are sufficiently different from zero. We also studied the impact of different values for the argument of perihelion. When local favorable conditions exist, they nearly always persist for >15% of the Martian year. These results are obtained without the need for additional greenhouse gases (e.g., H2, CH4) or transient heat-injecting phenomena (e.g., asteroid impacts, volcanic eruptions). A moderate amount (0.1%–1%) of CH4 significantly widens the parameter space region in which seasonal thaws are possible.

SUMMARY The genetics of anodal esterase (Est), cathodal esterase (cEst), cathodal acid phosphatase (cAcp) and malate dehydrogenase (Mdh) has been studied in mature seeds and leaves (genetics of cAcp and Mdh has not been studied in leaves) of sunflower (Helianthus annuus L.). A total of ten loci (four loci of anodal esterase, two loci of cathodal esterase, three loci of malate dehydrogenase and one locus of cathodal acid phosphatase) have been identified and described. Five esterase loci (Est1, Est2, Est3, Est4, cEst5), three malate dehydrogenase loci and one locus of cathodal acid phosphatase are expressed in seeds. Three esterase loci (Est2, cEst5 and cEst6) are expressed in leaves. The analysis of linkage between these loci has been made. Two linkage groups have been found. The sequence of the loci in the first linkage group was Mdh2-Est1- Est2-Est3-cEst5. In the second linkage group it was Est4-cAcp1. Linkages have been analyzed between three isoenzymatic loci expressed in leaves and between two loci controlling morphological traits (branched stem and male fertility restoration). The linkage between morphological traits and isoenzymatic loci has not been revealed. It has been revealed in Br-Rf pair.

Abstract:

The parameters considered in structural dynamic reliability analysis have strong uncertainties during machinery operation, and affect analytical precision and efficiency. To improve structural dynamic fuzzy reliability analysis, we propose the weighted regression-based extremum response surface method (WR-ERSM) based on extremum response surface method (ERSM) and weighted regression (WR), by considering the randomness of design parameters and the fuzziness of the safety criterion. Therein, we utilize the ERSM to process the transient to improve computational efficiency, by transforming the random process of structural output response into a random variable. We employ the WR to find the efficient samples with larger weights to improve the calculative accuracy. The fuzziness of the safety criterion is regarded to improve computational precision in the WR-ERSM. The WR-ERSM is applied to perform the dynamic fuzzy reliability analysis of an aeroengine turbine blisk with the fluid-structure coupling technique, and is verified by the comparison of the Monte Carlo (MC) method, equivalent stochastic transformation method (ESTM) and ERSM, with the emphasis on model-fitting property and simulation performance. As revealed from this investigation, (1) the ERSM has the capacity of processing the transient of the structural dynamic reliability evaluation, and (2) the WR approach is able to improve modeling accuracy, and (3) regarding the fuzzy safety criterion is promising to improve the precision of structural dynamic fuzzy reliability evaluation, and (4) the change rule of turbine blisk structural stress from start to cruise for the aircraft is acquired with the maximum value of structural stress at t = 165 s and the reliability degree (Pr = 0.997) of turbine blisk. The proposed WR-ERSM can improve the efficiency and precision of structural dynamic reliability analysis. Therefore, the efforts of this study provide a promising method for structural dynamic reliability evaluation with respect to working processes.

ABSTRACT This essay reflects on how the pandemic has intensified long-standing discussions regarding race, Blackness, white privilege and supremacy, settler colonialism, social justice, and more. I draw from forty years of ethnographic fieldwork or being part of the departmental leadership of Latin American and Latino Studies at my university. (Backdrop: growing up Puerto Rican in South Texas with Mexican and Mexican American families, I have dealt with these themes and tropes my entire life. I prefer class analysis over identity and culture, and, like a sophist or anarchist, I do not easily accept the thoughts of anyone.) This essay uses propositional logic to establish a poetics of radical compassion as prior to radical politics, followed by the “scenic” as evidence to “prove” that paradox is our living condition. In contrast, today’s totalization and capitalization of fear and the hypostatization of truth claims—insofar as they obscure the emptiness of truth—are the methods of war.

The environmental scanning electron microscope (ESEM) has evolved as the natural extension of the scanning electron microscope (SEM), both historically and technologically. ESEM allows the introduction of a gaseous environment in the specimen chamber, whereas SEM operates in vacuum. One of the detection systems in ESEM, namely, the gaseous detection device (GDD) is based on the presence of gas as a detection medium. This might be interpreted as a necessary condition for the ESEM to remain operational and, hence, one might have to change instruments for operation at low or high vacuum. Initially, we may maintain the presence of a conventional secondary electron (E-T) detector in a "stand-by" position to switch on when the vacuum becomes satisfactory for its operation. However, the "rough" or "low vacuum" range of pressure may still be considered as inaccessible by both the GDD and the E-T detector, because the former has presumably very small gain and the latter still breaks down.

Abstract:

The primary determinant for telomere replication is the enzyme telomerase, responsible for elongating the G-rich strand of the telomere. The only component of this enzyme that has been identified in Saccharomyces cermzsiae is the TLC1 gene, encoding the telomerase RNA subunit. However, a yeast strain defective for the EST1 gene exhibits the same phenotypes (progressively shorter telomeres and a senescence phenotype) as a strain deleted for TLC1, suggesting that EST1 encodes either a component of telomerase or some other factor essential for telomerase function. We designed a multitiered screen that led to the isolation of 22 mutants that display the same phenotypes as est1 and tlc1 mutant strains. These mutations mapped to four complementation groups: the previously identified EST1 gene and three additional genes, called EST2, EST3 and EST4. Cloning of the EST2 gene demonstrated that it encodes a large, extremely basic novel protein with no motifs that provide clues as to function. Epistasis analysis indicated that the four EST genes function in the same pathway for telomere replication as defined by the TLC1 gene, suggesting that the EST genes encode either components of telomerase or factors that positively regulate telomerase activity.

El objetivo del presente artículo es mostrar a través de la novela Quédate este día y esta noche conmigo (2017), de Belén Gopegui, algunas imbricaciones entre literatura y compromiso políticosocial en el contexto hipertecnológico contemporáneo, ya que en ella la autora centra su atención en Google como epítome de nuestra sociedad. Para resaltar sus críticas y propuestas, se hará dialogar el texto con diferentes ensayos elaborados en el ámbito de los estudios culturales sobre dicha empresa. Se pondrán así de manifiesto cuáles son los aspectos en que Gopegui, aprovechando las vivencias de un joven universitario y de una sexagenaria enferma, insiste para realizar su denuncia y brindar alternativas disidentes. En efecto, si por un lado desvela las conexiones con el capital de Google y sus consecuencias en los ciudadanos de a pie, por el otro, sugiere formas de resistencia contra un «sentido común» cada vez más determinado por los algoritmos.

El artículo describe la aparición del COVID-19 de forma imprevisible en el planeta Tierra y las consecuencias que ha tenido para la humanidad, que no estaba preparada para una pandemia de esta magnitud. Relata la situación psicológica y material en la que vivían muchos niños y jóvenes –generación X, Y, Z—antes de la pandemia y de las consecuencias que han tenido que vivir en esta experiencia de confinamiento de las casas por la cuarentena impuesta y qué enseñanzas se pueden extraer de la situación vivida. Así mismo trata del origen y la forma de propagación del COVID-19, de los posibles intereses políticos y económicos que lo han podido dar origen, así como de las políticas sanitarias implementadas por los países y se pregunta si la ciencia es la solución. Concluye con una reflexión sobre si la amenaza puede revertirse en una oportunidad para que los humanos reflexionen y, después de vivir esta experiencia, aprendan a vivir de forma más humana y se pueda originar un nuevo orden mundial mejor para todos.
