Full textIn this thesis, we considered the problem of the robustness of neural networks. That is, we have considered the case where the learning set and the deployment set are not independently and identically distributed from the same source. This hypothesis is called : the i.i.d hypothesis. Our main research axis has been data augmentation. Indeed, an extensive literature review and preliminary experiments showed us the regularization potential of data augmentation. Thus, as a first step, we sought to use data augmentation to make neural networks more robust to various synthetic and natural dataset shifts. A dataset shift being simply a violation of the i.i.d assumption. However, the results of this approach have been mixed. Indeed, we observed that in some cases the augmented data could lead to performance jumps on the deployment set. But this phenomenon did not occur every time. In some cases, the augmented data could even reduce performance on the deployment set. In our conclusion, we offer a granular explanation for this phenomenon. Better use of data augmentation toward neural network robustness is to generate stress tests to observe a model behavior when various shift occurs. Then, to use that information to estimate the error on the deployment set of interest even without labels, we call this deployment error estimation. Furthermore, we show that the use of independent data augmentation can improve deployment error estimation. We believe that this use of data augmentation will allow us to better quantify the reliability of neural networks when deployed on new unknown datasets

Full textMarine pollution has increased over time, becoming a major source of concern. A non-negligible proportion of these waste and pollutants are from sea-based sources, especially fisheries, due to derelict fishing equipment. Tropical tuna purse seine fishing vessels contribute to this problem by deploying large numbers of drifting Fish Aggregating Devices (dFADs), as a significant portion of these floating objects eventually end up derelict, potentially contributing to marine pollution and threatening sensitive ecosystems such as coral reefs. The general objective of this thesis is to use scientific analyses of dFAD trajectory and fishing data to propose mitigation measures to reduce these problems in the Indian and Atlantic Oceans. First, it is demonstrated that prohibiting deployments in areas most likely to lead to beachings has the potential to be effective for reducing the beaching rate. Results indicate that 21% to 40% of beachings could be prevented if deployments were prohibited in high risk areas, roughly delimited by the areas south of 8°S latitude, the Somali zone in winter, and the western Maldives in summer for the Indian Ocean, and in an elongated strip of areas adjacent to the western African coast for the Atlantic Ocean. Next, the identification of areas within the fishing ground where most dFADs exit, as well as the passage of a large number of dFADs close to ports, provides support for the implementation of recovery programs to collect these dFADs at sea and reduce their loss. These two measures appear to be complementary since areas predicted to benefit less from closures are more likely to benefit from recovery programs, particularly in the northwestern Indian Ocean and the northern Gulf of Guinea. Finally, the evaluation of a Lagrangian transport tool to simulate the trajectories of dFADs shows that the efficiency of this tool at the basin scale is relatively good in the two oceans, that the accuracy to simulate the trajectories is better in the Indian Ocean than in the Atlantic Ocean, and that this accuracy depends on the depth and the spatial resolution of the forcing currents product used. This tool could be used in an operational mode in the future to anticipate the trajectories of dFADs that could lead to loss or beaching and therefore be used as a complementary mitigation program to the other two measures described above (prohibiting deployments and recovery at sea). The results obtained during these various works thus constitute a solid basis to define new recommendations to mitigate the risks of loss and beachings of dFADs and thus contribute to the preservation of our oceans and our coasts

Full textThis thesis deals with the study of estimators' performance in signal processing. The focus is the analysis of the lower bounds on the Mean Square Error (MSE) for abrupt change-point estimation. Such tools will help to characterize performance of maximum likelihood estimator in the frequentist context but also maximum a posteriori and conditional mean estimators in the Bayesian context. The main difficulty comes from the fact that, when dealing with sampled signals, the parameters of interest (i.e., the change points) lie on a discrete space. Consequently, the classical large sample theory results (e.g., asymptotic normality of the maximum likelihood estimator) or the Cramér-Rao bound do not apply. Some results concerning the asymptotic distribution of the maximum likelihood only are available in the mathematics literature but are currently of limited interest for practical signal processing problems. When the MSE of estimators is chosen as performance criterion, an important amount of work has been provided concerning lower bounds on the MSE in the last years. Then, several studies have proposed new inequalities leading to tighter lower bounds in comparison with the Cramér-Rao bound. These new lower bounds have less regularity conditions and are able to handle estimators’ MSE behavior in both asymptotic and non-asymptotic areas. The goal of this thesis is to complete previous results on lower bounds in the asymptotic area (i.e. when the number of samples and/or the signal-to-noise ratio is high) for change-point estimation but, also, to provide an analysis in the non-asymptotic region. The tools used here will be the lower bounds of the Weiss-Weinstein family which are already known in signal processing to outperform the Cramér-Rao bound for applications such as spectral analysis or array processing. A closed-form expression of this family is provided for a single and multiple change points and some extensions are given when the parameters of the distributions on each segment are unknown. An analysis in terms of robustness with respect to the prior influence on our models is also provided. Finally, we apply our results to specific problems such as: Gaussian data, Poisson data and exponentially distributed data

Full textThis manuscript concerns the performance analysis in array signal processing. It can bedivided into two parts :- First, we present the study of some lower bounds on the mean square error related to the source localization in the near eld context. Using the Cramér-Rao bound, we investigate the mean square error of the maximum likelihood estimator w.r.t. the direction of arrivals in the so-called asymptotic area (i.e., for a high signal to noise ratio with a nite number of observations.) Then, using other bounds than the Cramér-Rao bound, we predict the threshold phenomena.- Secondly, we focus on the concept of the statistical resolution limit (i.e., the minimum distance between two closely spaced signals embedded in an additive noise that allows a correct resolvability/parameter estimation.) We de ne and derive the statistical resolution limit using the Cramér-Rao bound and the hypothesis test approaches for the mono-dimensional case. Then, we extend this concept to the multidimensional case. Finally, a generalized likelihood ratio test based framework for the multidimensional statistical resolution limit is given to assess the validity of the proposed extension
