Abstract:
Phenomenology can be roughly described as the theory of the pure essences of phenomena. Yet the meaning of essence and of concepts traditionally tied to it (such as the concepts of a priori and of essential necessity) are far from settled. This is especially true given the impact modern science has had on established philosophical views and the need for revisiting certain core notions of philosophy. In this paper I intend to review Husserl’s view on thingness-essence and his conception of the essence of individuals, based mainly in his writings from the time of Logical Investigations, Ideas, and later of Experience and Judgment. Taking account of the work of Lothar Eley in Die Krise des Apriori, among others, I will inquire into the ways in which phenomenology may undermine (one could even say fully “destroy”) the view of essences as non-factual, as well as undermine their ontological priority. Doing so may help to shape a conception of material or formal individual essences and generally of essences as concrete objects of experience in virtue of well-defined epistemic ones.

Abstract:
AbstractThis paper addresses the question of whether, according to Plato, there are forms of sensible qualities; it is also addressed to the wider question of whether there are forms of physical and material things more generally. In particular, it considers the tension raised by the following theses: (1) a Platonic form is the essence of some thing; (2) for Plato those essences that are forms are imperceptible and are knowable through reasoning alone; (3) knowing the essence of a particular color (e.g., red) requires presentation with the relevant perceptible quality and hence requires sense perception; and (4) if a sense perceptible quality has an essence, then that essence is a form. The solution I defend to this puzzle basically consists of accepting theses (1) through (3) but denying thesis (4). Sensible qualities, according to Plato, do have essences, but specifying their essences does not require that one postulate a separate form.

In ‘Two Notions of Being: Entity and Essence’ E. J. Lowe defends “serious essentialism”. Serious essentialism is the position that (a) everything has an essence, (b) essences are not themselves things, and (c) essences are the ground for metaphysical necessity and possibility. Lowe's defence of serious essentialism is both metaphysical and epistemological. In what follows I use Lowe's discussion as a point of departure for, first, adding some considerations for the plausibility of essentialism and, second, some work on modal epistemology.

Abstract:
The common thought that Husserl was committed to a Platonist ontology of essences, and to a mysterious epistemology that holds that we can ‘intuit’ these essences, has contributed substantially to his work being dismissed and marginalized in analytic philosophy. This paper aims to show that it is misguided to dismiss Husserl on these grounds. First, the author aims to explicate Husserl’s views about essences and how we can know them, in ways that make clear that he is not committed to a traditional Platonism, or a mystical epistemology. Second, the author argues that Husserl’s approach was an important source for Carnap in “Empiricism, Semantics, and Ontology”, where Carnap tried to overcome the empiricists’ qualms about referring to abstracta. Finally, the author will argue that Husserl’s approach can be reconstructed in contemporary analytic terms by appeal to the idea of pleonastic transformations. By seeing both Husserl’s views and their influences on later analytic work more clearly, the hope is to build bridges and make clear that the approach is of lasting value and interest.

Abstract:
Central to the philosophy of Aristotle is the belief that the aim of serious enquiry is knowledge of the constitutive essences of a given field. Modern scientific essentialism claims that this still holds good, and this thesis aims to support that approach by elucidating and applying the original concept of essence. Chapter one argues that Aristotle formulated his theory of essences entirely in the context of the theory of explanation expounded in Posterior Analytics. The components of that theory are explained, and the implications of Aristotle’s view for current debate are considered. Chapter two examines the reasons for the decline of Aristotelian essentialism during the scientific revolution, the metaphysical problems which resulted, and Leibniz’s reasons for defending the older view. Chapter three considers the nature of explanation in a modern context, starting with the preconditions for any grasp of reality that are needed to make explanations possible; it is then argued that only essentialist explanation can occupy the role which these preconditions entail. Chapter four surveys the components of that picture of reality that seem explicable, to see how essentialist explanations would actually be formulated. The theoretical discussion concludes with an account of what form essences should take, in order to occupy the explanatory role that has been assigned to them. The final chapter examines the cases of counting physical objects, explaining abstract axiomatic systems, and the discovery of the periodic table of elements, showing how attempts at explanation in these cases all converge on the sorts of essence which have been delineated in the thesis.

Abstract:
The muscle of shellfish, in particular shrimp, is characterized by high amounts of free amino acids especially glycine as well as proline, serine and alanine which all contribute to the overall pleasant and desirable flavour perceived. The two major proteolytic enzymes, chymotrypsin and trypsin, were used at different ratios (E/S, 0.0-0.3%), temperatures (25$ sp circ$C-45$ sp circ$C) and time of hydrolysis (1-3h) for frozen and fresh shrimp. These conditions were optimized in order to generate a product with desirable sensory and chemical characteristics. The thermal stability of chymotrypsin and trypsin were investigated, to determine the suitability of heat to stop the hydrolysis reactions at desired conditions. The results for the frozen shrimp showed that chymotrypsin was found to be inactivated after incubation for 1 min at 80$ sp circ$C while trypsin was found to be relatively heat stable. The commercial soybean trypsin inhibitor was used to inactivate trypsin. The use of both enzymes accelerate the rate of hydrolysis to some extent. Higher free amino acids yield for glycine, serine, and proline were obtained for chymotrypsin-treated hydrolysates. (Abstract shortened by UMI.)

Abstract:
Research as to how humans group natural kinds, such as animals, is essential to understanding categorization processes. However, it lacks conventional application and generalization to everyday life. Humans are social beings that encounter a wide array of individuals on a daily basis. In these situations, we are required to consider various properties that make up these people. As Keller (2005) suggests, the way we categorize is shaped by our theories about the world. Therefore, when we determine the rationale behind people’s social categorization processes, we are better able to understand people’s perceptions of their social environment. Moreover, when we conduct scientific research on how people categorize race, we gain substantial information about their perceptions and understanding of race. Thus, the goal of the present study was to determine how and to what extent people categorize race and if they use the principles of psychological essentialism to do so. In order to determine if people tend to essentialize race in a similar manner as other natural kinds, the third study of the Hampton, Estes, Simmons (2007) research was replicated. In Study 1 and Study 2, undergraduate participants were obtained from Western Kentucky University’s psychology study board. In Study 1, participants were presented with transformation stories in which an animal or person came to look and act like another animal or person as a result of either mutation or maturation. Approximately one-half of the participants received scenarios that included information about the exemplar’s offspring. Approximately one-half received scenarios that excluded this information. Additional transformation stories that described changes to artifacts and the body (i.e. weight and hair length) were added as filler items. Participants rated the artifact/animal/person’s typicality, category membership, and their level of confidence in their ratings. In addition, they provided justifications for their responses. In Study 2, transformations were described as being the result of unintended or intended changes. In Study 2, one-half of the scenarios included a statement that the animal or human’s offspring resembled the initial state, I. One-half of the scenarios included a statement that the animal or human’s offspring resembled the final state, F. Participants rated the artifact/animal/person’s typicality and category membership. They were also asked to provide justifications for their responses. This study provides further support for the belief of race as a natural kind given that subjects were more likely to essentialize race than animals. The study also suggests that people view race differently than other factors related to appearance (i.e. hair length and weight). In both studies, the majority of subjects were willing to state that a person changed if their hair or weight changed; however, they were unwilling to indicate a person could change their race. Furthermore, the justification data obtained in the study was one of the first studies to differentiate the reasoning used by those who did and did not essentialize animals and race.

The aim of this study is to develop an essentialist theory without possible worlds. We claim that ordinary objects are complex entities composed of entities that are more basic like pieces of matter and instantiated properties. The possible constituents are determined by reality and mind- and language-independent, the constitution, however, is conventional dependent on our conceptual scheme and our naming practices. In consequence, we develop an Aristotelian theory of ordinary objects as complexes of their essences and the matter which instantiates these essences. We apply this conception of objects in order to modify the direct reference theory. In the resulting theory, the meanings of proper names are the essences of the bearers of the names. The theoretical frame of our investigation consists in a Platonist theory of properties according to which properties are integral parts of a complex reality connected with its concrete partand in which some properties can participate in causal relations. In accordance with this view, we present an actualist conception of modalities in which modalities obtain in virtue of second order relations between properties, in case of de re modalities in virtue of second order relations between objects essences and other properties.

Full text
Abstract:
The aim of this study is to determine the best adsorbent among several zeolites for removing thiophene from gasoline. Acidic faujasite zeolites (HFAU) are not suitable for this removal, since rapid condensation reactions of gasoline components may result from the presence of acidic sites. Such reactions would lead to the formation of bulky molecules which block the access of thiophene to the micropores. Adsorption of thiophene, diluted in n-heptane or in competition with an olefin or an aromatic, was studied on zeolites under their sodium form or partially exchanged with cesium. The advantage of these zeolites is that no reaction of condensation was observed. It was shown that the cesium exchange was in favor of the thiophene adsorption in the case of solutions with a high content in olefins. Moreover, for solutions which contain all of the competitors, the more the zeolite is basic the more the selectivity of adsorption is in favor of thiophene

Boulouet, Henri. Thesis, Valenciennes, 2014. http://www.theses.fr/2014VALE0020/document.

Full text
Abstract:
The idea of ‘system’ is pervasive in our descriptions and in our projects. The impossibility to come up with a generally and scientifically valid definition of this idea touches the most profound features of the classical conceptualization, those that underlie the current languages, the grammars and the classical logic. These features are rigidly tied with the belief that what we know is what ‘really’ exists, such as we know it. But this belief is refuted by microphysics, where it appears that that we create our knowledge entirely, as much the ‘entities’ that we examine as the qualifications of these entities. The Method of Relativized Conceptualisation of M. Mugur-Schächter establishes that the processes of creation of knowledge are subjected to relativizations, and that making them explicit clarifies the involved significances and permit to dominate the finalities. It is surprising to perceive to what a point the relativizations required by the method winds up the ambiguities commonly tied up to the idea of system. But such a clarification requires first to bring into light the relativizations acting in the conceptual-factual genesis of such basic concepts as persistence, continuity, state or causality. It brings about the relativized redefinitions of the concepts oflaw of probability, of entropy and of complexity. The global result is called Relativised Systemic (RS). It possesses the character of a methodological infra-frame for the design of technical-scientific constructivist methods, specifically appropriate for particular domains of application, such as the Relativised System Engineering method (RSE), dedicated to the design of utilitarian artefacts

Abstract:

Abstract:
Improved numerical analysis of fluid-solid interaction of rigid wedge water entry with multiple deadrise angles was conducted. This involved the coupling of fluid flow and structural mechanics, normally analyzed through separate numerical platforms. To capture the subtleties of water behavior in detail using finite elements, an advanced gradient meshing technique involving meshed and meshless Lagrangian elements was developed. The gradients varied particle spacing to maximize the resolution at the area of impact while reducing computation time. The properties of water, incorporating compressibility, were simulated and used in small and full scale analysis models. Results of multiple converging gradient schemes were compared to existing models, physical experiments, and analytical representations. The advanced gradient mesh schemes were able to capture the qualitative and quantitative essences of the event. Further experimental trials are needed to establish the predicting capabilities of the developed model when examining large scale fluid-solid interactive systems.

Abstract:
In multi-source hybrid electric vehicles (HEVs), more degrees of freedom are introduced to the power management optimization problem. Formulation of the optimal control problem and selection of solution method significantly affect the realtime applicability of the developed strategy. Moreover, elaborate definition of objective cost function and control variables are the essences to approach the global optimal solution in real-time. In this paper, two novel developed concepts are introduced: Adaptive Dynamic Programming (ADP) and Progressive Optimal Search (POS). The problem definition and solution method are structured in each method to yield minimum fuel consumption and suit realtime applicability. The results are comparatively analyzed with respect to previous developed methods of rule-based (RB) and adaptive RB. Experimental application of the developed methods is conducted using a hardware-in-the-loop (HIL) test-rig to validate the control modules. The comparative analysis emphasizes the advantages of each method from the perspectives of trip cost minimization, charge sustenance, and realtime applicability.

Gauvin, Florent, Vesta Tsao, Joost Vette, and Henricus Jozef Hubertus Brouwers. "Physical Properties and Hygrothermal Behavior of Mycelium-Based Composites as Foam-Like Wall Insulation Material." In 4th International Conference on Bio-Based Building Materials. Switzerland: Trans Tech Publications Ltd, 2022. http://dx.doi.org/10.4028/www.scientific.net/cta.1.643.

Full text
Abstract:
This research aims to study mycelium-based composites (MBC) by assessing their performance as foam-like wall insulation material. Various substrates have been selected to get optimized performance of the composite. Results showed that a prolonged growing period arose a denser mycelium outer layer in MBC, which rendered better water resistance due to the hydrophobicity of mycelium. Thermal conductivity and mechanical properties are highly dependent on substrate choices than other parameters of MBC, which coincided with the literature. Additionally, influences of accelerated aging test and moisture buffer capacity of MBC were first studied in this research. The results indicated that MBC not only maintained good functional performance after the accelerated aging test (i.e. drying and wetting cycles) but also constituted good moisture buffer capacity. This means that MBC has key material essences to apply as internal wall insulation material and become one of the layers in vapor-permeable building envelope systems to passively regulate indoor relative humidity and thermal comfort.

Abstract:
“A writer’s diary (1972-2012)” by Nicolae Esinencu represents an interesting case of (re)construction of the self and essential self-definition in relation to external (social, literary, political) and internal (crises, anguish, revelations) events. We will follow in the writing the key defining identity markers for the diary character, this narrative self par excellence, from the effort to relive the “first self” related to the symbol of the parental home and the emblematic figures of the parents in the first chapter of the diary, to the attempts of autoscopy and disclosure of the essential self that stems from a reflexive consciousness bent on understanding the world and preoccupied with the national drama (the struggle for the Romanian language, the Latin script, the exit from the administrative tutelage of the Moscow Writers’ Union). Besides these, we will also discover the internal dialogue, the inner turmoil in the later chapters, which configure a search for the essences of the writer in a conflicting relationship with time.

Abstract:
The article considers the model of the space-frequency-time continuum, according to which the physical essence of Time is manifested as a fraction of electromagnetic energy spent on updating a material object in a cyclic process of copying-incarnation. For all structural levels of physical reality, the value of this fraction is a fundamental constant, which can be represented as the tangent of the loss angle, or expressed in radians, as the angle of inclination of the evolutionary spiral, which characterizes the rate of change of states or the duration of events and processes. The value of this constant can be calculated, and its value turns out to be identically equals to the square of the fine structure Constant (α2). The description of the method for identifying a new constant allows us to present the formula of Scientific Discovery as the Physical Essence of Time.
