Rüger, Jan. Writing Europe into the History of the British Empire. Oxford University Press, 2017. http://dx.doi.org/10.1093/oso/9780198768784.003.0003.

Full text
Abstract:
How should we think of the relationship between Europe and the British empire? Much of the public debate in the recent past has suggested a clear-cut answer: the empire prevented Britain from being drawn ‘into Europe’; it was thanks to its imperial possessions that the United Kingdom could afford not to play a more active European role. Empire and Europe, in short, presented opposite poles in Britain’s engagement with the world. The essay challenges this widely held assumption. It investigates the many ways in which European and imperial experiences were bound up with each other in British life. By doing so, it explores strategies for writing the British empire into European history and European history into the imperial British past.

Abstract:
The essay uses poetic, descriptive, and conceptual writing approaches to articulate how the choreographic strategies of RMW(A) & RMW emerged from their historical and political contexts. The work references the 1990s and the early 2000s as historical moments influenced by the AIDS epidemic and the Internet revolution. It proposes that the notion of a queer object and action might be used to differentiate the kinds of desire that are negotiated between the performers and the audience through these choreographic approaches over time. RMW(A) & RMW is described as a practice that adapts to the unstable notion of what queer dance means for these two differently female bodies as their lives move apart and come together. The essay describes the experience of being inside the work as well as narrates the personal histories that shaped the choreography and practice of RMW(A) & RMW.

Abstract:
This chapter builds on the conceptual analyses in previous sections and examines Newman’s written and oral strategies for defending his Essay on Development and writings on faith in reason while he was in Rome as a seminary student in 1846 and 1847. The chapter focuses on the composition, which has later become known as the “Theses de fide” as well as on his proposed introduction to the French edition of the Oxford University Sermons, and Newman’s reliance on Perrone’s writings in these drafts. The chapter additionally explores the Jesuit theologian Giacomo Mazio’s public and private maneuvers in introducing Newman to important authorities and advocating for his theory of doctrinal development.

Corrigan, Lisa M. Prison Power. University Press of Mississippi, 2016. http://dx.doi.org/10.14325/mississippi/9781496809070.001.0001.

Abstract:
Prison Power centers imprisonment in the history of black liberation as a rhetorical, theoretical, physical, and media resource as activists developed movement tactics and ideology to counter white supremacy. In highlighting imprisonment as a site for both political and personal transformation, Prison Power underscores how imprisonment shaped movement leaders by influencing their political analysis and organizational strategies. The book suggests that prison became the critical space for the transformation from civil rights to Black Power, especially as southern civil rights activists faced setbacks in achieving equality. In centering the prison as a locus of political inquiry, Black Power activists produced autobiographical writings, essays, and letters about and from prison beginning with the early sit-in movement. Prison Power introduces the critical optic of the “Black Power vernacular” to describe how Black Power activists deployed rhetorical forms in their writings that invented new forms of black identification and encouraged support for black liberation from prison. In using Black Power vernacular forms, imprisoned activists improved their visibility while simultaneously documenting the racist abuses of the judicial system. This new vernacular emerged to force various publics to acknowledge and end the massive brutality perpetrated against black people in prison and in the streets in the name of law and order thereby helping to shore up support for Black Power organizations and initiatives.

van Apeldoorn, Laurens, and Robin Douglass, eds. Hobbes on Politics and Religion. Oxford University Press, 2018. http://dx.doi.org/10.1093/oso/9780198803409.001.0001.

Full text
Abstract:
This volume provides the first collection of essays dedicated to the complex and rich intersections between Hobbes’s political and religious thought. Written by experts in the field, it opens up new directions for thinking about his treatment of religion as a political phenomenon and the political dimensions of his engagement with Christian doctrines and their history. The chapters investigate Hobbes’s strategies for showing how his provocative political positions could be accepted by different religious audiences for whom fidelity to religious texts was of crucial importance, while also considering the legacy of his ideas and examining their relevance for contemporary concerns. Some chapters do so by pursuing mainly historical inquiries about the motives and circumstances of Hobbes’s writings, while others reconstruct the logic of his arguments and test their philosophical coherence. They thus offer wide-ranging and sometimes conflicting assessments of Hobbes’s ideas, yet they all demonstrate how closely intertwined his political and religious preoccupations are and thereby showcase how this perspective can help us to better understand his thought.
