Full textAccelerated pavement tests (APT) have been increasingly used in recent years to assess the behaviour of pavement structures and their lifetimes. This is mainly due to their ability to simulate the full-scale effect of traffic loads and climatic conditions on pavements, in ashort period of time, and to follow the behaviour of the pavements until the end of their service life. These tests make it possible to evaluate pavement design methods or the use of innovative pavement materials and structures. However, the measurements made during accelerated pavement tests are numerous and varied, and there is no common approach to assess the behaviour of the studied pavements. The main objective of this thesis is to develop a methodology to analyse the behaviour of pavements, in accelerated tests, from their initial conditions to their final level of deterioration. This approach is applied to an experiment carried out at Université GustaveEiffel, as part of the ANR SolDuGri project, which aimed to compare the performance of a traditional bituminous pavement structure withstructures reinforced by fiberglass grids. From these analyses, a probabilistic pavement design approach, aiming to extend the Frenchpavement design approach, in order to better take into account the variations of certain design parameters, to predict the service life ofpavements is proposed, and applied to the analysis of accelerated tests on pavements

Full textDuring the spring thaw period, pavements experience a significant decrease of their bearing capacity, which leads to increased deterioration during that season. The Ministry of Transportation of Quebec enforces load restrictions during the thawing and the recovery of the pavement structures to ensure they are protected from excessive thaw associated damages. The main objective of this paper is to present the results of an investigation of the structural behaviour of a pavement structures during freezing and thawing under laboratory controlled conditions using the Laval University heavy vehicle simulator (HVS). The results of the study will be used to develop criteria to assists the authority in the decision-making process for the implementation and the removal of load restrictions. A typical four-layer flexible pavement structure was built inside an indoor concrete test pit at Laval University. The pavement section was instrumented to monitor horizontal strains in the asphalt concrete layer as well as vertical stress, vertical strain, and water content in each unbound layer and in subgrade soil. Temperature was also monitored in all layers. The new HVS was used to impose 5000 kg (normal conditions), 5500 kg (winter) and 4000 kg (spring load restrictions) loads on a standard dual-tire assembly. The load simulator was also used to induce three freeze-thaw cycles to a depth of 1,5 m in the pavement structure. The results allowed quantifying the relationship between pavement response and freezing/thaw depth and to identify the critical conditions of the thawing period. Also, the results showed that the application of a load restriction period during the thaw allowed to have a gain on the life cycle, thus a load restriction period is justified and effective. However, to optimize the load restriction period, new management criteria have been proposed in this project.

Full textThe diagnosis of the road fleet becomes a necessary step prior to themaintenance and the repair of pavement structures. The importance of a finer analysis of the results of the non-destructive testing methods can eventually achieve to cost and energy savings for the maintenance and construction. This phD thesis introduces a thermo-visco-elastic model for intersting the behavior ofbituminous pavement materials, using the complex modulus and damping from master curves. The resolution of the dynamic problem is performed thanks to a frequency approach. This approach is particularly applicable to a FWD test on which climatic variations are studied. In situ tests, carried out on two instrumented sites, are used to validate the model. The obtained of good results suggests the use of this model through a multi-criteria analysison deflection basins and of the records for the future development of a backcalculation dynamic model

Full textThe trench is a major cause of deterioration of urban pavements. It considerably reduces the service life of these pavements. The present work aims to study through a large-scale experimentation the influence of the trench on urban pavements. It has been conducted within a collaboration between Lille Metropolis, Civil and geo-Environmental Engineering laboratory and Eurovia. It includes 4 parts. The first part contains a literature review concerning the influence of the trench on urban pavements as well as its economic impact. The second part concerns the analysis of the performances of the instrumentation system used to monitor the behavior of the pavement and the trench built at the entrance of Lille1 campus. The third part consists in the analysis of structural behavior of the pavement and the trench using deflection tests. The last presents an analysis of the responses of the pavement and the trench under traffic and the influence of the temperature on these responses

Full textLead-containing pigments (red lead, white lead), widely employed in paintings since Antiquity, are liable to undergo transformations which lead to discolorations of the pictorial layer (blackening, whitening, greening). The conditions of appearing of the alteration phases are studied through artificial ageing tests of raw pigments and experimental paintings. The tests reveal both the decomposition of white lead in the presence of lime and the transformation of minium into black plattnerite β-Pb02 in dilute acidic environment. The characterization of red lead micro-samples taken from an experimental wall painting after a 25-years natural ageing period reveal that blackening is linked to the formation of plattnerite through a probable mechanism of disproportionnation of Pb304 in acidic environment. The whitening is caused by the re-crystallization of divalent lead into both cerusite (PbCO3) and anglesite (PbSO4), produced by the absorption of gaseous pollutants (C02, SO2)

Full textThe long-term performance of the road network of the province of Quebec (Canada) is strongly influenced by the climate and the weather conditions. Amongst other factors, high levels of saturation in soils and pavement materials are believed to be an important cause of pavement deterioration. According to the climate change scenarios established by Ouranos (2010), the North and South of Quebec will undergo an average precipitation increase from -0.1% to 8.45% in a future horizon of 2010-2039. The purpose of this project is to quantify the effect of these expected precipitation increases on the mechanical behavior of road structures, materials and soils. Based on literature and on data collected on instrumented road sections, a relationship between precipitation increase and saturation level of pavement layers is proposed. The resilient modulus and permanent deformation behavior for various water contents and four different subgrade soils was determined using triaxial tests, which were validated using small-scale heavy vehicle simulator, in order to determine the existing relationship between mechanical properties and moisture contents. Using the precipitation increase scenarios and the preset models, a damage analysis is performed to quantify the decrease of pavements service life caused by climate change. It is found that climate change, and more precisely the increase of precipitation expected in the Province of Quebec, will have a significant impact on pavement performance and that adapted pavement structures and materials, such as improved drainage, increased structural capacity or materials with reduced sensitivity to water, are possible options to reduce the loss of pavement life associated with climate change.
