Full textThis research progresses through both experiments and theoretical reflections and aims at defining a digital space as a palpable one. This work is structured round body-felt spatial experience, human perception, hence the part played by the brain, and the specificities of digital 3D. It includes studies of numerous artists-researchers' experiments that correspond to the different issues examined in my research as well as to my own art work. Where does my conception of space fit into the 3D digital world? It appears to be movement continually developing: that's why I call it espace-milieu. How can the visitor enter this space? Couldn't he be helped by his perception of a dancing body? Or wouldn't it be better if this space was created from the specificities of the 3D digital animation? Besides, the visitor being the one who by his involvement and his movement makes this space happen, wouldn't he need a hybrid, visual, tangible, audible installation intertwining the real and the virtual?

Full textFrançois Bayle (born 1932), French composer of electroacoustic music and head of the Groupe de Recherches Musicales (GRM) from 1966 to 1997, has always claimed an interest in plastic arts. This leads us to think that pictorial elements have an important impact on our perception of the composer's style. The first section addresses the notions of light and darkness, which seem to match two poles (transparency/blur), while the model of color is related to the whole piece, and could be compared to the general tone of a painting. The models of background and graphical form can be understood as descriptions of sonic variations on a short time scale. The study of their relation to one another, in particular thanks to a typology of listening situations, enables us to bring to light esthetical choices based on balanced axes, and conveys the music as a double of the real sonic world. The last section investigates the integrational possibilities of pictorial models, which are static by definition, within a dynamic musical structure. Even if juxtaposition processes prevail, the general structure is oriented, and offers a second reading to the piece. Keywords : composition, electroacoustic music, musical analysis, François Bayle, painting, plastic arts, Groupe de Recherches Musicales (GRM), color, form, morphology

Full textBecause of the discordancy between the chromatic architectural strategies put forward in Iran during two of its most recent phases of modernization and Iran’s broader geographic and cultural context, I have set out to question the specificity of the sense of colour and its role in Persian spatiality. Can colour still be considered a structural factor in a city faced with the current trend towards uniform built environments? If I have focused my analysis on Ispahan from a historical and theoretical point of view, it is because traditional urban planning as well as the contemporary transformations of the city encompass a significantly broad and transversal sample of the entire Persian and Iranian society. If the point of departure of my work has been to analyse the sense and value of the relationships between contemporary Persian colour(s) and architectural and urban spaces, my point of arrival, and main thesis after many years of research, consists in saying that the optic and haptic effects of colour in architectural and urban spaces depend fundamentally on the interpretation that is given to depth. How can we understand this complex concept and its urban development usage in a Persian cultural context? It is following this logic that I will try to develop a new perspective on the third dimension and its expression by means of the use of colour, within both the understanding of Ispahan’s inhabitants, and the city’s actual urban development projects

Full textGrace king (1852-1932) is a louisianian author who achieved great success in her day as a biographer, historian and novelist of her region. This study of her fiction illustrates the characteristics of the local color movement to which it belongs, and their transgression for apologetic, realistic or feminist purposes. The chronological analysis puts into relief the writer's evolution throughout her career, on an ideological and literary level. Part i tackles the historical, cultural and biographical circumstances surrounding grace king's literary output, enhancing the paradoxical status of the writer as a southerner and as a woman. Part ii, examining the first works, discloses, behind the regional romance, some of grace king's favorite motifs: space symbolism, race and gender barriers in the south. The analysis of tales of a time and place is the topic of part iii. The short stories infringe the conventions of the genre (stereotypes, irony, picturesqueness), use naturalistic themes to depict the south from a social standpoint. The stories considered in part iv mark a turning point in king's writing, introducing a more intimate style in which local color vanishes behind the main character : the new southern woman. Part v is a structural analysis of the pleasant ways of st. Medard, a autobiographical novel which reveals the author's inventiveness. The last part focuses on la dame de ste hermine, a romance confirming king's competence as an historian while suggesting her abdication as a modern author. Examining the narrative devices of structure, characterization, space and time representation, this study sets out to explain the complexity of the author's motives, and investigates the subversive perspective of her writings, which turns her lucid description of the south into a praise of the southern woman and a condemnation of southern masculine hegemony

Full textA partition of a positive integer n is a decreasing sequence of positive integers such that their sum is equal to n. The integers which appear in this sequence are called the parts of this partition. My thesis studies the partitions of integers and the identities between them. A partition identity is an equality between the number of partitions of an integer n satisfying a certain condition A and the number of partitions of n satisfying another condition B. They play an important role in many areas: number theory, combinatorics, Lie theory, particle physics and statistical mechanics. One of these identities is as follows: Theorem. (The first Rogers-Ramanujan identity) The number of partitions of a positive integer n with no equal or consecutive parts is equal to the number of partitions of n into parts 1 or 4(mod.5). In this work, we study partition identities using the relation between the combinatorics of partitions and the combinatorics of graded algebras associated to an important object of algebraic geometry: arc spaces. Given a field k of characteristic zero and polynomials f1,…,fm in k[x1,…, xn], the associated arc space is the space corresponds to the ideal I of S:=k[x1j,…, xnj|j>-1], generated by the coefficients of some developments associated to the above polynomials and the variables xij. For focussed arcs, which is when we take xi0 = 0 for i=1,…,n, the Hilbert-Poincaré series of the graded algebra S\I is closely related to partitions of integers satisfying conditions depending on I. In the case where f(x) = x^r in k[x], the ideal I of k[x1, x2,… ] is a differential ideal for the derivation D(xi) = xi+1, in the sens that DI is included in I. In fact it is generated by x1^r and all its iterated derivatives. We show that when r = 2 the computation of a Gröbner basis of I with respect to the weighted lexicographical monomial order is related with an identity involving the partitions that appear in the first Rogers-Ramanujan identity. We then prove that a Gröbner basis of this ideal is not differentially finite in contrary with the case of the weighted reverse lexicographical order. We give a prove from this point of view of Gordon’s identities which is a family of important partitions identities. Using differential ideals we state a conjecture which could add a new member to Gordon’s identities. we prove then this conjecture for a special case. At the end, we give a simple and direct proof of a theorem of Nguyen Duc Tam about the Gröbner basis of the differential ideal [x1y1]; we then obtain identities involving partitions with 2 colors

Full textSet within in the field of social and critical geography, and adopting an inter-sectional perspective, this dissertation focuses on socio-racial marginalization and exclusion on the southern beaches of Rio de Janeiro. This marginalization phenomenon owes as much to the growing interest of developers and urban planners for prestige public spaces as it does to the concern of the local residents for their living environment, and their individual practices and appropriations that are further vectors of side-lining. Deconstructing the myth of democratic carioca beaches as a spatial embodiment of “racial democracy”, I will demonstrate how the imagination of legitimate bodies (“in place”) and the stereotypes of illegitimate bodies (“out of place”) are produced, in particular through extended securitarian media coverage that sanctions the idea of segregated beaches. Based on social, economical and racial division lines inherited from the colonial era that extend throughout the city, and particularly polarize its northern and southern areas, these stereotypes rely on the powerful imaginations these dividing lines fuel. They are the result of a spatial construct. Narrowing the study to that of young Black men from disadvantaged neighborhoods of Rio de Janeiro, I finally seek to understand what appropriations are possible for those this stigma affects the most, and the meaning given to the places they occupy. Choosing an approach that focuses on individuals and everyday life, my research rests upon an ethnographic qualitative method which merges comprehensive interviews, direct observation and observant participation with the methodical experimentation of emotional mapping of those investigated

Full textThis thesis deals with problems related to color. In particular, we are interested inproblems which arise in image and video colorization and contrast enhancement. When considering color images composed of two complementary information, oneachromatic (without color) and the other chromatic (in color), the applications studied in this thesis are based on the processing one of these information while preserving its complement. In colorization, the challenge is to compute a color image while constraining its gray-scale channel. Contrast enhancement aims to modify the intensity channel of an image while preserving its hue. These joined problems require to formally study the RGB space geometry. In this work, it has been shown that the classical color spaces of the literature designed to solve these classes of problems lead to errors. An novel algorithm, called luminance-hue specification, which computes a color with a given hue and luminance is described in this thesis. The extension of this method to a variational framework has been proposed. This model has been used successfully to enhance color images, using well-known assumptions about the human visual system. The state-of-the-art methods for image colorization fall into two categories. The first category includes those that diffuse color scribbles drawn by the user (manual colorization). The second consists of those that benefits from a reference color image or a base of reference images to transfer the colors from the reference to the grayscale image (exemplar-based colorization). Both approach have their advantages and drawbacks. In this thesis, we design a variational model for exemplar-based colorization which is extended to a method unifying the manual colorization and the exemplar-based one. Finally, we describe two variational models to colorize videos in interaction with the user

Full textThis manuscript investigates omnidirectional catadioptric color images as Riemannian manifolds. This geometric representation offers insights into the resolution of problems related to the distortions introduced by the catadioptric system in the context of the color perception of autonomous systems. The report starts with an overview of the omnidirectional vision, the different used systems, and the geometric projection models. Then, we present the basic notions and tools of Riemannian geometry and its use in the image processing domain. This leads us to introduce some useful differential operators on Riemannian manifolds. We develop a method of constructing a hybrid metric tensor adapted to color catadioptric images. This tensor has the dual characteristic of depending on the geometric position of the image points and their photometric coordinates as well.In this work, we mostly deal with the exploitation of the previously constructed hybrid metric tensor in the catadioptric image processing. Indeed, it is recognized that the Gaussian function is at the core of several filters and operators for various applications, such as noise reduction, or the extraction of low-level characteristics from the Gaussian space- scale representation. We thus build a new Gaussian kernel dependent on the Riemannian metric tensor. It has the advantage of being applicable directly on the catadioptric image plane, also, variable in space and depending on the local image information. As a final part in this thesis, we discuss some possible robotic applications of the hybrid metric tensor. We propose to define the free space and distance transforms in the omni- image, then to extract geodesic medial axis. The latter is a relevant topological representation for autonomous navigation, that we use to define an optimal trajectory planning method

Full textModeling the spatial configuration of objects in an image is a subject that is still little discussed to date, including in the most modern computer vision approaches such as convolutional neural networks ,(CNN). However, it is an essential aspect of scene perception, and integrating it into the models should benefit many tasks in the field, by helping to bridge the “semantic gap” between the digital image and the interpretation of its content. Thus, this thesis aims to improve spatial configuration modeling ,techniques, in order to exploit it in description and recognition systems. ,First, we looked at the case of the spatial configuration between two objects, by proposing an improvement of an existing descriptor. This new descriptor called “force banner” is an extension of the histogram of the same name to a whole range of forces, which makes it possible to better describe complex configurations. We were able to show its interest in the description of scenes, by learning toautomatically classify relations in natural language from pairs of segmented objects. We then tackled the problem of the transition to scenes containing several objects and proposed an approach per object by confronting each object with all the others, rather than having one descriptor per pair. Secondly, the industrial context of this thesis led us to deal with an application to the problem of re-identification of scenes or objects, a task which is similar to fine recognition from few examples. To do so, we rely on a traditional approach by describing scene components with different descriptors dedicated to specific characteristics, such as color or shape, to which we add the spatial configuration. The comparison of two scenes is then achieved by matching their components thanks to these characteristics, using the Hungarian algorithm for instance. Different combinations of characteristics can be considered for the matching and for the final score, depending on the present and desired invariances. For each one of these two topics, we had to cope with the problems of data and segmentation. We then generated and annotated a synthetic dataset, and exploited two existing datasets by segmenting them, in two different frameworks. The first approach concerns object-background segmentation and more precisely the case where a detection is available, which may help the segmentation. It consists in using an existing global segmentation model and exploiting the detection to select the right segment, by using several geometric and semantic criteria. The second approach concerns the decomposition of a scene or an object into parts and addresses the unsupervised case. It is based on the color of the pixels, by using a clustering method in an adapted color space, such as the HSV cone that we used. All these works have shown the possibility of using the spatial configuration for the description of real scenes containing several objects, as well as in a complex processing chain such as the one we used for re-identification. In particular, the force histogram could be used for this, which makes it possible to take advantage of its good performance, by using a segmentation method adapted to the use case when processing natural images

Full textThe rotation of painting. Towards a practice of isntallation. The thesis proposes a theoretical investigation about a series of plastical works realised between 1992 and 1994. It was the point to underline the evoluiton onto three years, about three precise subjects : 1) - concerning the artistic material : the passage from a 2)- dimensional plane to a 3-dimensional object, via frames entitled bis repetita, to attain a practice of installation. - to submit some abstract canvases to a test of emptying and re-using : to wipe them out, to recover them with white col our; to roll, to fasten, to smear them with monochrome pigmentation. To analyse those works, we used the following artistic references : helio oiticica and eva hesse. The passage from the plane to 3-dimensionality has been coupled, on the : 2) - theoretical register with : - the overture of a poetical field inside the works realised with the re-used canvases. The titles utter it: welcome to silence, test, wrappings, macula, conducting threads, reception of things. Gradually, the physical and corporal metaphor has become more insisting. The theoretical basis of the speculative work lies on the phenomenology and the question of the horizon, which merleau-ponty has developed in his analyses of the perceiving body. Repetition and impermanent are explored to propose a plastical plan of action free from any subjection to a wilful message. I wanted to look for the manner the material elements of the work as a whole can contribute to bring the installation to be, for the glance, a free expressive, epidermic and tactile game. A fluid world, not planned. Therefore, the "rotation" of painting is a work about a painting submited to time, to temporary choice, carelessness, and revival fo the worked surfaces

Full textThis thesis is devoted to the study of image restoration and decomposition using variational calculus methods and partial differential equations. In chapter 1, after recalling some notions and basic results on image analysis, we present the essential questions that we will treat in the thesis. In chapter 2, we show that minimization problems involving sublinear regularizing terms are ill-posed, in general, although numerical experiments in image processing give very good results. We give a new approach to perform minimization via the Chambolle's algorithm. In chapter 3, we propose an extension of the TV: weighted total variation and extended total variation. Furthermore, we provide an algorothm to perform minimization via the Chambolle's algorithm. In chapter 4 we study a model of restoration and decomposition via nonstandard diffusion. We present a class of nonstandard increasing strictly convex regularization terms, which allows both, existence and uniqueness results. Before closing this chapter effective algorithms, based on projection method, are proposed in the case of scalar and vectorial images. Finally, in the part conclusion and perspectives, we present a restoration model with local constraints. This model was studied by Caselles et al. Full textTexture analysis has been extensively studied and a wide variety of description approaches have been proposed. Among them, Local Binary Pattern (LBP) takes an essential part of most of color image analysis and pattern recognition applications. Usually, devices acquire images and code them in the RBG color space. However, there are many color spaces for texture classification, each one having specific properties. In order to avoid the difficulty of choosing a relevant space, the multi color space strategy allows using the properties of several spaces simultaneously. However, this strategy leads to increase the number of features extracted from LBP applied to color images. This work is focused on the dimensionality reduction of LBP-based feature selection methods. In this framework, we consider the LBP histogram and bin selection approaches for supervised texture classification. Extensive experiments are conducted on several benchmark color texture databases. They demonstrate that the proposed approaches can improve the state-of-the-art results

Full textThe colour white in the cinema of science fiction vibrates and sparkles, inviting our interpretations. Unrelated images are linked through whiteness in a form of heterogeneous connection that solicits our gaze as a montage. This look also facilitates the detachment of white figures from their reference objects, the context of the film and even the context of cinema. In this vision of a constellation, which reveals the energies of construction, destruction and uncertainty, whiteness in the cinema of science fiction by its hybrid and changing nature easily transgresses the established laws of space-time. Carrying diverse sensations and thoughts, the colour white reflects its era in a manner at once both indirect and fragmentary, discreetly revealing its virtual but rich past. At once the colour of nothingness and integrating all other colours, saturated with memory but new like a newborn, white with its minimal and unlimited character demonstrates an ability to move freely in the world of science-fiction, and even to wander in the universe of images

Full textMarie noel's imaginary universe lies upon four main axes, four obsessive themes: childhood, love, space and time. Childhood mentioned on several occasions allows to bring to mind marie noel's own childhood and to perceive the first signs of her artistic gifts. Marie noel follows tradition when she describes love; however she often attempts to part from that tradition, for example when she joins her christian outlook to the theme. Marie noel's works gradually build up an original space, in which the places fit for happiness and the places in which unhappiness prevails inexorably face each other. A tragic note appears in marie noel's works when she comes to write about time : it is always thought of tragically; it always brings misfortune. The vision of heraclitean stream betrays this obsession of unhappiness linked to time, the obsession of the precarous human condition. The "noelian" being, deprived of any feeling of safety, wonders apprehensively: "who am i in this world in which all things pass away?" moreover, time leads to death and the author, in her very first works, rebels against fate.
