Abstract:
While press materials, are widely used both as an ESP materials resource and as a research source by ESP practitioners, press headlines in English confront the Non Native Speaker (NNS) and to some extent the Native Speaker (NS) with a notorious paradox: headlines are crafted to raise communication potential and yet, rather than communicate, they often perplex the reader. This may be devastating for motivation on the part of the English-as-a-foreign-language (EFL) student where even those at advanced level suffer frustration on failing to cope with headlines. The main arguments of this article are that headline perplexity is generated by the very communicatively driven strategies used in their configurations, that these strategies form patterns and that these patterns can be singled out and analysed in such a way as to enable the student to crack the code and thereby turn a liability into an asset, a stumbling block into a stepping stone.

Abstract:
Beginning with the discovery of the BRCA-associated ovarian cancer susceptibility genes and subsequent detailed examination of risk-reducing salpingo-oophorectomy (RRSO) specimens, a new paradigm of ovarian carcinogenesis has unfolded with attention to the distal fallopian tube. The primary focus has been an early cancer or neoplasm in the fallopian tube which is seen in virtually all incidentally discovered high-grade serous cancers in asymptomatic women. This high-frequency of tubal involvement in early serous neoplasm (usually in the form of serous tubal intraepithelial carcinoma—STIC) has galvanized attention to this organ as a primary source of this disease. However, an enduring mystery has been the relatively low frequency of STIC in the fallopian tubes of women with advanced malignancy. This paradox, a high frequency of tubal involvement early on and a low frequency of involvement later in the disease process, has spurred interest in other potential sources, such as the ovarian surface epithelium or cortical inclusions and the secondary Mullerian system. However, because essentially all high-grade serous carcinomas are linked by TP53 mutations, and because fallopian tubes frequently contain early serous proliferations (ESPs) with these mutations, attention has turned to the possibility that the nonmalignant but TP53 mutated tubal epithelium could be responsible for an eventual malignancy. Recent data have shown evidence of a lineage continuity between ESPs and concurrent serous carcinomas prompting the concept of “precursor escape”. This creates a second component of the paradigm by which cells from early precursors are shed from the tube and undergo subsequent malignant transformation, emerging suddenly as widespread intraperitoneal malignancy. This dualistic model thus provides a unique pathway by which the future outcome (wide spread high-grade serous carcinomas—HGSC) is ultimately explained by going back in time to an early serous proliferation. This paradigm also brings the peritoneal cavity into focus, raising new questions about the potential co-variables or exposures that might facilitate the occasional malignant transformation of an ESP in the peritoneal cavity or on the peritoneal surface.

Abstract:
Special Relativity presents before us several thought challenging paradoxes. The most famous one is the clock or twin paradox which arises from the well-known time dilation phenomenon. In this paper, we will give a brief but pedagogical treatment of this paradox. The crucial point is that the relativity of simultaneity, for events happening at different places, plays a fundamental role in understanding the apparent disagreement between the rest and the moving observers. Once this has been taken care of, the disagreement and the paradox would disappear.

We discuss an apparent information paradox that arises in a materialist’s description of the Universe if we assume that the Universe is 100% quantum. We discuss possible ways out of the paradox, including that Laws of Nature are not purely deterministic, or that gravity is classical. Our observation of the paradox stems from an interdisciplinary thought process whereby the Universe can be viewed as a “quantum computer”. Our presentation is intentionally nontechnical to make it accessible to as wide a readership base as possible.

Abstract:
The so-called “Twin Paradox”, wherein a relativistic effect is hypothesized to produce verifiably different clock rates between bodies, has not been resolved to the satisfaction of many theorists. There has been an abiding difficulty with determining how arbitrary periods of uniform motion, when both twins will observe the other’s clock to move more slowly, can be resolved upon their reunion. Spacetime diagrams are used here to demonstrate visually and mathematically that there is a nonparadoxical explanation for the supposed discrepancy that has not been previously proposed.

Abstract:
In recent years, sections of Indian industry have complained that they are being harmed by an inverted duty structure (IDS). That is, tariffs on their imported inputs are higher than that on their outputs. In this article, we argue that the concept of effective rate of protection (ERP), despite its limitations in the context of general equilibrium theory, provides an appropriate tool for analysing this issue. We outline the theory underlying the calculation of ERP and its relationship with IDS. We then offer new estimates of ERP for the period 2000–2014 using a data source that, unlike those used by earlier authors, enables us to construct a time series on ERP for each sector, using different tariff rates applied by India on imports from different countries. We find many instances of IDS but none of them results in negative ERP. Cases of negative ERP are found in a few sectors and years for which the counterfactual value added under free trade is negative. We discuss some possible explanations for this phenomenon. Finally, we show statistically and econometrically that, in line with theoretical expectations, ERPs are positively related to the degree of tariff escalation. JEL Codes: F13, F14, O24

Abstract:
My thesis aims at contributing to classifying the Liar-like paradoxes (and related Truth-teller-like expressions) by clarifying distinctions and relationships between these expressions and arguments. Such a classification is worthwhile, firstly, because it makes some progress towards reducing a potential infinity of versions into a finite classification; secondly, because it identifies a number of new paradoxes, and thirdly and most significantly, because it corrects the historically misplaced distinction between semantic and set-theoretic paradoxes. I emphasize the third result because the distinction made by Peano [1906] and supported by Ramsey [1925] has been used to warrant different responses to the semantic and set-theoretic paradoxes. I find two types among the paradoxes of truth, satisfaction and membership, but the division is shifted from where it has historically been drawn. This new distinction is, I believe, more fundamental than the Peano-Ramsey distinction between semantic and set-theoretic paradoxes. The distinction I investigate is ultimately exemplified in a difference between the logical principles necessary to prove the Liar and those necessary to prove Grelling’s and Russell’s paradoxes. The difference relates to proofs of the inconsistency of naive truth and satisfaction; in the end, we will have two associated ways of proving each result. ¶ Another principled division is intuitively anticipated. I coin the term 'hypodox' (adj.: 'hypodoxical') for a generalization of Truth-tellers across paradoxes of truth, satisfaction, membership, reference, and where else it may find applicability. I make and investigate a conjecture about paradox and hypodox duality: that each paradox (at least those in the scope of the classification) has a dual hypodox.¶ In my investigation, I focus on paradoxes that might intuitively be thought to be relatives of the Liar paradox, including Grelling’s (which I present as a paradox of satisfaction) and, by analogy with Grelling’s paradox, Russell’s paradox. I extend these into truth-functional and some non-truth-functional variations, beginning with the Epimenides, Curry’s paradox, and similar variations. There are circular and infinite variations, which I relate via lists. In short, I focus on paradoxes of truth, satisfaction and some paradoxes of membership. ¶ Among the new paradoxes, three are notable in advance. The first is a non-truth functional variation on the Epimenides. This helps put the Epimenides on a par with Curry’s as a paradox in its own right and not just a lesser version of the Liar. I find the second paradox by working through truth-functional variants of the paradoxes. This new paradox, call it ‘the ESP’, can be either true or false, but can still be used to prove some other arbitrary statement. The third new paradox is another paradox of satisfaction, distinctly different from Grelling’s paradox. On this basis, I make and investigate the new distinction between two different types of paradox of satisfaction, and map one type back by direct analogy to the Liar, and the other by direct analogy to Russell's paradox.

Abstract:
Variovorax paradoxus EPS is a gram-negative rod isolated from the sunflower rhizosphere at CSUSB. Preliminary research has shown that Variovorax paradoxus EPS has anti-staphylococcal activity in liquid and solid co-culture. Anti-staphylococcal activity of Wild type and V. paradoxus EPS 𝚫4519 on 0.5% YE agar with embedded S. aureus AH1710 supports the idea that a soluble molecule is responsible for this activity, as the agar acted as a physical barrier between V. paradoxus EPS and S. aureus colonies. Preliminary genetic analysis of V. paradoxus EPS identified three loci that suitable candidates for the synthesis of a potential anti-staphylococcal small molecule. Preliminary data failed to detect expression at two of the three identified loci and a strain with a mutation at the third locus continues to produce anti-staphylococcal activity. We hypothesize that the microbial agent is expressed at a different locus or loci that have not yet been identified. These gene products are responsible for the synthesis of the microbial agent and are controlled by exposure to Staphylococcus aureus. Optimal growth conditions were identified for V. paradoxus EPS and S. aureus to demonstrate the formation of a zone of inhibition on Tryptic Soy Agar. The use of a V. paradoxus EPS Δ 4519 transposon library at optimal growth conditions allowed us candidate mutants with altered antimicrobial activity phenotypes. We identified 28 insertion sites that resulted in altered antimicrobial activities, which will allow us to identify the genes involved in this biosynthetic pathway.

A. This study deals with the commitment of pupils in dance and circus practices within schools and more specifically in Physical Education (P.E.). It was lead within an ethno-sociological framework and based on empirical and longitudinal work in relation to our professional status as a teacher. Throughout our observation of different types of practices in various conditions in schools, along with our comprehensive interviews, this research project suggests an analytical questioning, which lead to the idea of contradictions / paradoxes between the discourses of the committed pupils, the P.E. teachers who promote these practices, and the official school curriculum. The typology of the forms of commitment thus created tends to show that pupils evolve by building a rather singular type of commitment through a negotiation process, a shift between the norms and values represented by the school institution and those of the “ worlds of art” (H. Becker). The construction, by the pupil who is committed to the Artistic Physical Activities (APA), goes through variations of attachment modalities (A. Hennon) to the activity and to the activist teachers who pass those activities on

Abstract:

The third chapter focuses on several French-language musical films, known as opérettes filmées (filmed operettas), that were produced by American and German companies and intended for French audiences. Because French production was slow to adopt sound film technology, many French personnel (directors, composers, and actors) worked on their first sound films through these international contexts. The films analyzed in this chapter—Chacun sa chance, Le Chemin du paradis, and Il est charmant—drew influence from a range of stage genres from different national traditions, and attempted to negotiate theatrical and cinematic aesthetics. Furthermore, in the opérettes filmées, filmmakers attempted to bring an element of fantasy back to cinema that many feared the realism of spoken dialogue had displaced. This chapter reveals how the genre made an important contribution to a broader critical acceptance of sound film in France.

Abstract:
Abstract:

As significações do texto coletivo no processo alfabetizador de jovens e adultos do Cedep/Paranoá e Itapoã – UnB. Editora Universidade de Brasília, 2020. http://dx.doi.org/10.26512/9786558460220.

Abstract:

Abstract:
Certain cardiac arrhythmias are characterized by various ethnicity-related diversities in epidemiology, patient risk profiles, disease burden, treatment, or outcomes. Although the prevalence of conventional cardiovascular risk factors is generally greater in non-Caucasian ethnic groups, the risk for atrial fibrillation (AF) is higher in Caucasians. However, Caucasians are less vulnerable to AF-associated morbidity and mortality compared to other ethnic groups (the so-called AF ethnical paradox). Asian patients with AF are particularly sensitive to vitamin K antagonists, while non-vitamin K antagonist oral anticoagulants (NOACs) offer better efficacy and safety in Asian than non-Asian patients. African Americans require higher warfarin doses to maintain therapeutic anticoagulation intensity, and the quality of warfarin management is lower compared to white patients. Data on the effects of NOACs in African Americans and Hispanics are limited, since they were underrepresented in the landmark NOAC trials.

Abstract:
Previous studies have shown that Enterprise Resource Planning (ERP) systems have significantly impacted positively on the productivity of the organization. However, there exists a cost-failure paradox. ERP systems are very expensive and constitute a huge budgetary component, yet the failure rate of ERPs is very high. The selection process of ERPs is a critical success factor. This study focuses on the product and organizational constructs that affect the selection of ERP systems. The authors utilized an extension of technology acceptance model (TAM) by elements of the information systems (IS) success model. The study evaluated the impact of system quality, information quality, service quality, and support quality as key determinants of cognitive response, which influences ERP system purchase/use. Industry, firm size, buying center, and product experience were introduced as organizational constructs. The results of the study indicate that system quality, information quality and software support are significant product qualities that affect an organization’s decision to adopt an ERP product. Among the organizational constructs, only firm size was found to be statistically significant. The results also indicate that multi department committees and the IT department are the major buying centers responsible for vendor selection. In terms of information source, vendor reference and adverts are major information sources, while government standards and popularity/experience of vendors are important considerations in vendor selection.

Abstract:
This chapter further develops and generalises findings from the authors’ July 2008 paper in the International Journal of Enterprise Information Systems (IJEIS) by adding organisational issues such as business process reengineering (BPR). The authors argue that enterprise resource planning (ERP) systems are complex management tools that impose standard business processes from larger manufacturing firms. The authors test whether these systems can be adapted effectively to more simplified organisations such as small and medium enterprises (SMEs). The authors found that SMEs tend to have a high perceived level of satisfaction when using these complex tools, independent of size or sector. However, they cannot clearly establish that SMEs having applied BPR while implementing an ERP system are more satisfied than those that did not.

Abstract:
Implementing IT (information technology) systems such as ERP (enterprise resource planning) requires huge investments. Measuring the impact of these investments on productivity and profitability is extremely important for business managers. Many studies have failed to show the direct relationship between IT investments, organizational productivity and profitability, a phenomenon known as productivity paradox. The failure might relate to problems with the measurement techniques. This paper describes a measurement model, known as the PPP model (“Profitability = Productivity + Price Recovery”), that can fill the gap and show a link between IT investments, productivity, and profitability. The spreadsheet-based implementation of the PPP model, using multi-period data, generates performance trend charts of productivity, price recovery, and profitability. These performance charts provide a multi-period perspective to managers in identifying and understanding the impact of IT investments. This model is useful to managers considering heavy investments in IT as well as for managers interested in assessing their organizational performance and taking corrective actions in a timely manner.

Abstract:

Abstract:

Abstract:

Abstract:
