Abstract:
Purpose Several genealogical databases are now publicly available on the Web. The information stored in such databases is not only of interest for genealogical research but might also be used in broader historical studies. As a case study, this paper aims to explore what a crowdsourced genealogical online database can tell about income inequality in Denmark during the First World War. Design/methodology/approach The analysis is based on 55,000 family-level records on the payment of local income taxes in a major Danish provincial town (Esbjerg) from a publicly available database on the website of The Esbjerg City Archives combined with official statistics from Statistics Denmark. Findings Denmark saw a sharp increase in income inequality during the First World War. The analysis shows that the new riches during the First World War in a harbour city such as Esbjerg were not “goulash barons” or stock-market speculators but fishermen. There were no fishermen in the top 1per cent of the income distribution in 1913. In 1917, more than 37 per cent of the family heads in this part of the income distribution were fishermen. Originality/value The paper illustrates how large-scale microdata from publicly available genealogical Web databases might be used to gain new insights into broader historical issues.

Abstract:

Abstract:
During two campaigns in 1997 and 1999, archaeologists from Esbjerg Museum excavated a spectacular Late Roman Iron Age weapon burial at Veldbæk in Esbjerg, Denmark. In addition to full weaponry, the deceased was buried with magnificent grave goods such as gilded fittings for a military belt, gaming pieces, a gold finger ring, a silver animal fibula, a red carnelian intaglio, and a copper-alloy-clad wooden bucket. The assemblage dates the grave to the transition between periods C1b and C2 of the Late Roman Iron Age, which is to say ca. AD 250 or shortly thereafter. The grave is a crucial new piece in the puzzle to understand how power was distributed in southern Jutland during the Late Roman Iron Age.

Abstract:
This essay examines the port town of Esbjerg, tracing its evolution from solely agricultural and fishing-related exports to a contemporary base for offshore development. Local capital, maritime labour, employment and population levels, job losses, and the repeated labour strikes throughout the 1970s and 1980s, are discussed in order to conclude that though the port suffered unrest, the discovery of North Sea oil and the profits from the fishing industry kept the port running.

Abstract:
It is spring 1708, and Sweden has been at war for eight years. Charles XII camps out with the army in Lithuania, still a year from the fatal battle of Poltava in Ukraine, and it is a busy time for seasonal workers Per Larsson Gässaboda and Esbjörn Persson Bölsö. In the southern province of Småland (The Small Lands), the former border region with Denmark now just north of the new Swedish province of the recently occupied Skåne, the cows are out of the barns in which they have spent the cold winter, and it is time for Per and Esbjörn to take out their shovels, load their wagon, and set out on their mission for the King to the farmers of the region. They are part of the army, enrolled men, but not for combat because they are petermen, or ‘sjudare’ (simmers) as they were called in Swedish. The farmers do not look forward to their visits as these men can command their chariots and their horses at will, take the firewood (and they need huge quantities), and wreak havoc to barns, stables, and houses in their quest for the manure and urine-rich soils that form the valuable raw material for their trade. These men make nitrate—or to be specific, potassium nitrate (KNO3), also known as saltpetre—for delivery to the King’s gunpowder factories. More than 100 years ago Henry VIII’s contemporary, the equally shrewd and ruthless King Gustav Wasa, had realized Sweden’s precarious situation when it came to gunpowder, and with a simple stroke of his pen ruled that the soil underneath barns, stables, and cowsheds belonged to the King. In an additional law, perhaps more illustrating his fear of being cheated by innovative farmers than his well-known attention to detail, he also banned any building housing livestock from being paved with a stone floor. In a country in which buildings of stone were virtually unheard of, except for housing the very rich, this was hardly likely anyway, but the King didn’t like to take chances with money and the saltpetre was a valuable commodity that otherwise would have had to be imported.

Abstract:
This chapter looks at the spread of jazz—both geographically and institutionally. Almost from the start, jazz seemed destined to travel beyond its birthplace in New Orleans, but the pace of that expansion has accelerated in recent decades. Europe, which once looked to the United States for jazz role models, is increasingly self-sufficient, and other regions are also developing strong, homegrown jazz scenes. At the same time, jazz has broken down other barriers, entering schools and universities, and enjoying the support of influential nonprofit organizations such as Jazz at Lincoln Center. This shift has led to the rise of a new generation of musicians who have learned their craft in formal jazz education programs, and in many instances also teach at them, but also operate with fluency in the world of commercial music and popular culture. Artists discussed in this chapter include Brad Mehldau, Regina Carter, Esbjörn Svensson (and his band e.s.t.), and Joshua Redman.

Øi, Lars Erik, Njål Sæter, Neda Razi, and Sumudu Karunarathne. "Process simulation of CO2 absorption data fitted to performance efficiency at TCM Mongstad." In 63rd International Conference of Scandinavian Simulation Society, SIMS 2022, Trondheim, Norway, September 20-21, 2022. Full text
Abstract:
This work's first aim is to fit the simulated results to pilot plant data from Test Centre Mongstad (TCM) for both high and low CO2 exhaust gas inlet concentrations. The next aim is to evaluate whether fitted parameters for one scenario (a set of experimental data under specified conditions) give reasonable predictions under other conditions. The scenarios at TCM have been simulated in both a rate-based model in Aspen Plus (RateSep) and an equilibrium-based model in Aspen HYSYS. The rate-based model’s performance data were fitted by only changing the liquid hold-up factor (multiplied with the hold-up estimated by the Bravo/Rocha/Fair correlations) to obtain the experimental CO2 removal efficiency. In the equilibrium-based model, a Murphree efficiency (EM) was specified for 24 or 18 stages (meter of packing) to fit the CO2 removal efficiency and the temperature profile from performance data. The specified EM profiles were then used to fit performance data for other scenarios by adjusting only an EM-factor, multiplying all the EM values in an EM profile. The performance (CO2 removal and temperature profile) was reasonably simulated for each given scenario for all the models. It is shown in this work that the use of the liquid hold-up factor (and not the interfacial area factor) is convenient to fit the rate-based model to the pilot plant data. Using fitted parameters at low CO2 inlet concentration to predict performance at high concentration needed an adjustment factor (liquid hold-up factor or EM-factor) to obtain correct CO2 removal predictions. A liquid hold-up factor of 0.72 and an EM-factor of 1.72 fitted to performance data for high CO2 concentration at TCM gave reasonable predictions compared to performance data for high CO2 concentration from the Esbjerg pilot plant.
