Abstract:

Nature ecosystems are always complex, full of uncertainties and nonlinear changes. These changes are sometimes catastrophic, and many ecosystems have already been altered from their natural state as a result of human activities. Therefore, abrupt changes are likely to happen, the consequences of which can be irreversible. It becomes urgent to (i) further understand the features of complex ecological systems, and (ii) to identify yearly warning signals (EWS) to allow prediction of catastrophic transitions. This thesis aims for an understanding of one such example of a complex ecological system, i.e. Erhai Lake, Yunnan Province, China, and to determine the EWS in this ecosystem. This thesis focuses on the process of eutrophication in Erhai Lake, using two cores from the lake and a training set from Yunnan province, SW China. The study employed multiple techniques including monitoring, palaeolimnological proxies and modelling. The ideas of feedbacks, resilience and thresholds from complex ecological system theory are used to interpret the lake’s eutrophication process. Fossil diatom data is mainly employed to calculate the EWS for the lake’s ecosystem transition. The conclusions have been supported with a minimal model which is written with STELLA software. The main findings include: 1. The alternative stable states in the training set may affect the accuracy of diatom-based transfer functions. 2. The resilience of the lake’s ecosystem decreased due to the intensification of human activities, and the lake crossed a threshold at around 2001 due to a new positive feedback mechanism. 3. The lake was in a ‘flickering’ state between 1980-2000. Rising variance could be considered as an indicator of EWS but it was most likely caused by flickering rather than ‘critical slowing down’ in these noise-induced critical transitions. 4. The minimal model shows that flickering states can be simulated, and the rising variance due to flickering is also likely to predict the critical transitions in the simulated system. The mutual authentication between palaeo- data and the minimal model can deeply improve the understanding of a complex system, and explanation of complex theories. This work firstly considered the alternative stable states in a training set and presented EWS in a real natural ecosystem. Our findings suggest that rising variance can be seen as a warning signal in a system; therefore, it can be applied for intervention purposes in critical transitions in real ecosystems.

Thesis (MPA)--Stellenbosch University, 2014.<br>The asset management process and strategy has been adopted and implemented within the public sector. Although the National Treasury developed the Capital Asset Management Guidelines to assist with the development and implementation of the asset management system the guidelines have received very little attention over the years. The Auditor General’s findings indicate a lack of proper implementation of the asset management process. The study provides a clear indication of the implementation of the asset management process by most government entities, local government municipalities and the public sector. The outcome is that while most entities have made progress with regards to the implementation, much remains to be done. Most entities implement the asset management process selectively. This does not yield positive and sustainable results and they end up abandoning the whole asset management system. The report provides the process of successful development and implementation of asset management, it also indicate that if there are element that are missed or not properly done the process will not yield constant results or performance and the impact on the organization performance will not be positive. The management of the organization must ensure that asset management is aligned with strategic objectives of the organization and performance measurement must be directly linked with asset management, performance measurement should be used to determine progress and implementation. Service level agreements must be established between all relevant departments including the finance department and there must be agreement on the objectives between all stakeholders. The key to proper implementation is the alignment of the asset management process with the strategic objectives of the organization.

Abstract:

A partir de 1980, le phénomène de Ernai (l’homme marié entretient une deuxième femme souvent en cohabitant avec elle sans être su par l’épouse de l’homme) a fait l’apparition dans les villes côtières du sud de la Chine ou l’économie sont relativement développée. Il s’agit d’un échange de l’assistance financière accordée par un homme marié contre le service sexuel fourni par une femme souvent célibataire. Dans les relations entre ces hommes et femmes, il se peut que le couple soient amoureux l’un et l’autre, il arrive également que le couple s’intéresse plutôt a la transaction commerciale. Beaucoup de Ernai étaient issues du milieu modeste rurale. Dans les travaux de recherche antérieurs, les Ernai sont classées dans la prostitution. Or elles possèdent aussi des caractéristiques des concubines antiques des Qie. L’action des Ernai est considérée comme passive, étant donné que les hommes qui entretiennent jouent un rôle actif dans le processus. Il existe peu d’études systématiques en la matière. Le présent travail essaie d’explorer leurs parcours de vie conjugale afin de démontrer la nature réelle de ce group féminin en faisant un détour dans le passe pour mieux expliciter le présent<br>Since 1980, the phenomenon of Ernai (a maried man takes in charge of a second wife by living together with her without being seen by the spouse of the man) has been come out firstly in the coastal towns of southern China where the economy is relatively developed. It is an exchange of financial and material assistance given by a married man against the sexual service provided by a woman often single. In these relations between men and women, it is possible that the couple is in love each other, it also happens that the couple's interest is rather a commercial transaction. Many Ernai are from the poor regions. In the previous research, the Ernai are classified mostly in the framework of prostitution. But they have also some characteristics like the ancient concubinage of Qie. The action of Ernai is considered passif, given that men maintain active role throughout the process. There are few systematic studies on the subject. This paper tries to explore the belonging of these Ernai with doing a tour in the past in order to better explain this phenomenon

Abstract:

The effects of eutrophication in lakes and the open seas has been largely the result of phosphorus (P) that accumulate in the sediment. Eutrophication occurs mainly in the waters in densely populated coastal areas and agricultural dominated areas and occurs when an excess of nutrients reach the soil and water. In situ capping is a proven method to inhibit P and is the method used in this study. A capping is placed on the polluted sediment surface to physically isolate it and reduce the release of P and prevent resuspension, i.e. suspension of already precipitated P. The possibility of inhibiting P by using sediment capping and the reactive filter materials (sorbents) argon oxygen decarburisation (AOD) slag in particle size fractions 0-0.5 mm and 2-8 mm and electric arc furnace (EAF) slag in particle size fraction 1-2.36 mm, have been investigated. Soluble reactive phosphorus (SRP), also called orthophosphates, were the main species of P investigated in this study. A total of three studies were conducted in Lake Erhai in Dali China, during April 2016. One pre-study was conducted at ten different sites in the lake, which aimed to find the most P polluted site. This site was chosen for the main study. The main study aimed to investigate if the aforementioned sorbents managed to absorb orthophosphates after contact with lake sediment for seven days. The post-study was conducted to see if the sorbents themselves released any orthophosphates into the water. The water samples were tested for pH, conductivity and dissolved oxygen (DO) before and after contact with lake sediment. The slag materials and lake sediment were studied with inductively coupled plasma (ICP) spectroscopy and X-ray diffraction (XRD) to detect elements and compounds. Obtained results showed that the AOD slag (0-0.5 mm) could absorb 96% of the orthophosphates. However, both the AOD slag (2-8 mm) and EAF slag (1-2.36 mm) showed an increase of orthophosphates in the water after contact with lake sediment. The XRD analysis showed contents of silica (Si) and calcium (Ca) compounds in all of the slag materials, which was expected due to the configuration of these materials. The ICP analysis showed that 2% P was absorbed by the EAF (1-2.36 mm) slag, but there were no absorption by the AOD (0-0.5 mm) or AOD (2-8 mm) slag. The conclusion from this study is that AOD slag (0-0.5 mm) can be used successfully in P remediation projects because it absorbs 96% of the orthophosphates. The results are consistent with previous results from (Zuo et al., 2015) and (Renman et al., 2013).

Content of ”Erpai” reflected the life of people at that time. Ling Mengchu writted businessmen, prostitutes, nuns, scholars, and many other character. The content of the story reflected Ming Dynasty. The dissertation will take ” The Study of Morality and Sexy in “Erpai” as main idea. By analyzing various story characters has shown the morality and sexy. Make me understand that thinking of Ling Mengchu and his personal relationship with the late Ming Dynasty. This paper will figure into the morality and sexy performance in “Erpai”. The two points of morality is good and bad and organize a variety of characters'' attitudes towards sex. Hoping to get to know another point of view of contemporary Ling Mengchu. 　　 The second chapter is about the scholars. In the morality, Scholars are intellectuals in society. Because their identity ,so they had to comply with the Confucian ethics. Although there are many ethical scholars in “Erpai”, there are a lot of space to pursue material gain, gambling and other negative images of the characters portrayed. In the part of sexy, More scholars is lust. Scholars no longer be representative of moral. Ling Mengchu for women also had different views and in sexual desire also had a considerable degree of description. These sexuality based on love. All in all, the scholars in “Erpai” represents not only traditional moral of Ling Mengchu‘s pursuit, but also express their thinking changes. “Erpai” is a reflection for the late Ming of Ling Mengchu. The third chapter is about the merchants. The Ming Dynasty, the status of merchants raise. There are many stories of the business as the lead story in “Erpai”. The merchants had Confucian ethics in “Erpai”.It was not only the stingy side of the business, but also there were the goodness merchants in “Erpai”. From “Erpai” in the story can also be seen traders'' attitudes towards sex different from the traditional scholars of the rigorous. The fourth chapter is about monks. Monk characters in “Erpai” is a very prominent part. Monks should comply with rules and prohibitions, but monks Ling Mengchu described is the evil side. They played the role of breach of discipline in “Erpai”. Monks like money and women. These evil monks are the special significance of the arrangement of contents in “Erpai”. It reflects the unique culture of the Ming Dynasty and the author''s thinking. The fifth chapter is about female. Women in “Erpai” is also a prominent part. Ancient women''s morality is their chastity, so morality and sexy of women merger will therefore be discussed. The women in “Erpai” can be classified as prostitutes, widows, unmarried girls and married women. Although the lowly social status of prostitutes, but they are kind-hearted. Ling Mengchu express their views for the widow. Unmarried girls Ling Mengchu described value on free love. Description of married women contains personal Idea of Ling Mengchu. The sixth chapter is Conclusion. Ling Mengchu’s “Erpai” affected by the Ming Dynasty. “Erpai” in literary history is a unique value.
