Weisberg, Herb. Total Survey Error. Edited by Lonna Rae Atkeson and R. Michael Alvarez. Oxford University Press, 2016. http://dx.doi.org/10.1093/oxfordhb/9780190213299.013.22.

Abstract:
The total survey error (TSE) approach is a useful schema for organizing the planning and evaluation of surveys. It classifies the several possible types of errors in surveys, including in respondent selection, response accuracy, and survey administration. While the goal is to minimize these errors, the TSE approach emphasizes that this must be done within limitations imposed by several constraints: the cost of minimizing each type of error, the time requirements for the survey, and ethical standards. In addition to survey errors and constraints, there are several survey effects for which there are no error-free solutions; the size of these effects can be studied even though they cannot be eliminated. The total survey quality (TSQ) approach further emphasizes the need for survey organizations to maximize the quality of the product they deliver to their clients, within the context of TSE tradeoffs between survey errors and costs.

Abstract:
This chapter introduces the mathematics of network statistics, the quantification of errors in network data, and the estimation of network structure in the presence of error. The discussion starts with a summary of the types of error that can occur in network data and the empirical sources of those errors. The remainder of the chapter is given over to a discussion of the theory of network statistics, beginning with a review of the theory for ordinary real-valued (non-network) data, then developing the expectation-maximization (EM) algorithm for estimating network structure and error levels in the presence of error, with example applications. The chapter ends with a discussion of error correction methods such as link prediction and node disambiguation.

Abstract:
The Gregorian calendar reform of 1582, which provides the basis for the present-day Western civil calendar, has often been portrayed as a triumph of early modern scientific culture and an expression of papal ambition in the wake of the Counter-Reformation. Much less attention has been paid to our calendar’s intellectual and material roots in the European Middle Ages, when the reckoning of time by means of calendrical cycles was a topic of central importance to education and learned culture. For centuries prior to the Gregorian reform, astronomers, mathematicians, theologians, and even Church councils had been debating the necessity of improving or emending the existing ecclesiastical calendar, which throughout the Middle Ages kept growing out of sync with the astronomical phenomena at an alarming pace. Scandalous Error uses a broad base of sources, many of them unpublished or previously unknown, to paint the first full-scale survey of the medieval debate surrounding the calendar and its astronomical underpinnings.

Abstract:
In the eyes of posterity, ancient Rome is deeply flawed, whether because of political corruption or imperial domination, the practice of slavery or religious intolerance, sexual immorality or other “decadence”—the list could extend considerably. Without denying the good reasons why certain aspects of Roman behavior are unacceptable within our present worldview, this volume reveals how, for centuries, the Romans’ “errors” have not only provoked opprobrium but also inspired wayward, novel, errant forms of thought and representation, for whose historical importance and continued relevance the contributors argue. Treating examples from history, philosophy, literature, psychoanalysis, and art history, extending chronologically from antiquity to the present, Roman Error examines ways in which the Romans’ faults have become the basis for creative experimentation, rejections of prevailing ideology, revolutionary departures from received opinion, even comedy and delight. Thus “Roman error,” as used here, comes to signify both something that the Romans did and something that their heirs (including ourselves) do, when receptions of Rome attract charges of “error” or at least make us especially aware of reception as “error” of a kind. The reception of Rome’s missteps and mistakes has been far more complex than simply denouncing or condemning them, simply labeling them as an exemplum malum to be shunned and avoided. This volume, its play on words joining the moral, cognitive, and physical senses of the Latin verb errare (“to stray from the path of virtue,” “to be mistaken,” “to wander about,” etc.), examines a particular, recurring manner in which this is so.
