Full textThis doctoral thesis addresses the issue of moral dilemmas, specifically dilemmas of serious severity. These specific dilemmas are analyzed in an attempt to connect them to the thesis of Inescapable Moral Wrongdoing and the psychological trauma situation experienced by the agent in these situations. At first, examples of literature and philosophy that illustrate and explain each situation are presented. Such examples are Sophie s Choice, by William Styron, the dialogue between Socrates and Cephalus, in Book I of The Republic by Plato, and the case of the student of Sartre, in Existentialism is a Humanism. In a second moment, the study aims to carry out some important distinctions between types of moral dilemmas, namely: soluble, insoluble and symmetrical dilemmas. The main theories that deal with solution of moral dilemmas are exposed, divided in rationalist theories and "experientialist" theories. The former are analyzed so that it is shown that they do not accept genuine moral dilemmas, neither the thesis of the Inescapable Moral Wrongdoing, providing solutions for difficult moral dilemmas and even symmetrical, making use of principles of deontic logic, as the Kant Principle and the Agglomeration Principle. On the other hand, the theories of experientialist nature, which most interest this work, are those that accept the genuineness of moral dilemmas and admit the existence of the Inescapable Moral Wrongdoing. Therefore, some make use of the Remainder Thesis (TR), to which this work is affiliated. This theory states that in some specific moral dilemmas, even though the rational moral deliberation has been followed, the agent will suffer from feelings of regret, due to an emotional remainder concerning the duty that was not fulfilled or a violated value. Thus, according to the Remainder Thesis, the best explanation for this remainder and feelings of regret is the Inescapable Moral Wrongdoing theory. Therefore, the term "wrongdoing" is used in the sense of violating important moral values for the agent, and not in the sense of violating correct moral deliberation conclusions. To systematize the discussion, in a third moment, this study focuses on providing a definition capable of including the specific cases of moral dilemmas with inescapable moral wrongdoings (Definition of Moral Dilemmas with Inescapable Moral Wrongdoings - MDIMW). Moral dilemmas of serious severity are included in this definition, ones with a high moral cost to the agent, which are able to hurt the agent s moral sensibility and generate strong feelings of grief, which can lead to serious psychological trauma. The example of Sophie s Choice plays a crucial role in this discussion, while it fits the MDIMW. Finally, it is brought to the discussion the concept of "moral injury", recent term used in psychiatry to refer to situations of difficult moral choices usually faced by former war combatants. Certain serious moral choices faced by these agents would be able to generate "moral injury" to their moral codes, become risk factors for the manifestation of traumas and, in more serious cases, Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD). Thus, analyzing the relationships between moral choices of serious severity, inescapable moral wrongdoings, trauma and the possibility of its overcoming, are the main objectives of this study.

Full textAlthough there is a drop on necropsies rates performed in each hospital, which is the number of necropsies by total of deaths, for a number of medical, technological and social reasons, necropsy remains as the main exam to evaluate the discrepancy of premortem and postmortem diagnoses and to estimate, morbidity and mortality and patient risks. Our study compares and describes the diagnoses of patients who died at the HC-FMRP/USP during the years of 2010 e 2014. We analyzed 1216 necropsies performed at he the HC-FMRP in 2010 and 2014, comparing agreement and disagreement between clinical diagnoses and necropsy reports, by the Goldman (1983) modified classification. The mean necropsy rate was 49%. Major discrepancies were 23.4%, with average of 15% for class 1 and 8.3% for Class 2 discrepancies. We found the most common discrepancies occurred at the ages of 80 to 100 years old. The most prevalent diagnostic was \'pneumonia\', found in 40% of all cases studied, among which 25% showed major discrepancies. Our results are compatible with the main recent studies in the field in Brazilian hospitals, in which the major discrepancies are between 32-35% and under the rates of the studies conducted abroad, in which major discrepancies were around 20%.
Thomas, Nicolas. "Stochastic numerical methods for Piecewise Deterministic Markov Processes : applications in Neuroscience." Thesis, Sorbonne université, 2019. http://www.theses.fr/2019SORUS385.
Full textIn this thesis, motivated by applications in Neuroscience, we study efficient Monte Carlo (MC) and Multilevel Monte Carlo (MLMC) methods based on the thinning for piecewise deterministic (Markov) processes (PDMP or PDP) that we apply to stochastic conductance-based models. On the one hand, when the deterministic motion of the PDMP is explicitly known we end up with an exact simulation. On the other hand, when the deterministic motion is not explicit, we establish strong estimates and a weak error expansion for the numerical scheme that we introduce. The thinning method is fundamental in this thesis. Beside the fact that it is intuitive, we use it both numerically (to simulate trajectories of PDMP/PDP) and theoretically (to construct the jump times and establish error estimates for PDMP/PDP)

Full textThrough a careful examination of the relationship between Zoroastrianism and the Western tradition, and a detailed and critical reading of the writings of Nietzsche, this work aims at showing to what extent the character Zarathustra , his discourses and poetical-philosophical thoughts, and related passages from many distinct Nietzschean works, directly or undirectly reflect a philosophy that harvests contributions from the Zoroastrian tradition or its headways (in the Judeo-Greco-Christian tradition, and furthermore in the whole Western philosophical tradition). Supplied with this provisions, and with the interpretation cast upon them, Nietzschean philosophy questions the entire Western tradition of thought, and proposes its replacement by a new attitude towards life. This work also intends to show the way the Nietzschean Zarathustra was built up, in the writings of the German philosopher, together with the idea of making, out of the namesake character of the ancient Iranian prophet (Zarathushtra or Zoroaster, the founder of Zoroastrianism), the herald of that important text that intended to bring the German language to its highest perfection , clumping together, and leading to a prophetic-poetic climax consonant with the meaning of the Earth , Nietzsche s key ideas about the rectification of the most fatal of errors and about the death of God . An elaborate investigation has been pursued after the reasons and manners of the building up of Nietzsche s Zarathustra mirroring its Iranian namesake (sections 1.1 to 1.6), and a survey of the works of Nietzsche has suggested unquestionable relations with the Zoroastrian tradition, mostly through the Jewish, Greek or Christian repercussions of this tradition. These relations have been put in context, in many framings (sections 2.1 to 2.3.2), in the ambit of the most fatal of errors - the - creation of morals in the very occasion of its transposition to metaphysics (Ecce Homo, Why I am a destiny , 3). Through an evaluation of the possible circumstances and repercussions of the death of God , the relations between Nietzsche s writings and Zoroastrian tradition have been investigated (sections 3.1 to 3.7), allowing the understanding of this event as an essential component, and tragic outcome, of the rectification of the most fatal of errors

Full textThis study, entitled “dramaturgy and morals”, looks at the dramatization of moral values in the comedies of Menander and Plautus. I employ an approach that identifies which values are evoked and looks at how they are conveyed and structured in relation to one another. The aim is to analyse how they are treated and the place that is accorded to them. Are they subjected to reflection, affirmed, or critiqued? Thus what is at stake is less about finding the “morals” in the plays or their supposed moral message, but rather delineating the architectonics of values in these comedies. This study will focus more specifically on axiology, that is to say the form that moral evaluation takes in the comedies of Menander and Plautus. According to which criteria is this evaluation carried out? What is at stake in this evaluation? The concept of value, as it appears in the comedies of Menander and Plautus, entails essentially three domains: the material, the symbolic, and the ethical. The issue at hand is understanding how they are conceived of and related to one another in the comedies of Menander and Plautus. Such a perspective intersects with the question of the relationship between personal interest and the interests of others, a key concern in Ancient philosophy which seeks to discover to what extent an ethical agent is obliged to take into consideration others in order to achieve happiness. The first section is concerned with the concepts of moral values and trade. It looks at two types of trade: commercial trade, which outlines the primacy of utilitarian morals, and communal trade, which is based on co-operative values. The second section deals with the idea of contravention. It examines the procedures used to judge a particular action. The third section looks at comedy as ethical experimentation

ABSTRACT Because of technological changes our world is becoming more and more interconnected and loan words are being introduced into the Japanese language at a startling rate. Upon investigation into the daily usage of the Japanese language, the number of loanwords introduced into Japanese is astounding. Learners of Japanese as a second language must learn to properly pronounce those words of foreign origin used in everyday life. Even for students from kanji areas, learning the proper writing of loan words is a major challenge. In this thesis, I examined the reports of Japanese learners in Taiwan from the Language Acquisition Research Project (LARP) at Soochow University. In order to understand how pronunciation affects orthography, I identified and analyzed the errors common to native Chinese speakers in Taiwan. I also investigated how the native language influenced and caused errors in the Japanese writing of speakers of Chinese, a syllabic language, learning Japanese, a moraic language by means of a longitudinal study probing the evolution of errors by examining the reports of beginning, intermediate, and advanced level students. The results of my study of the LARP indicated that errors involving long vowels and geminate consonants were most prevalent. The results as to the order of the most frequent errors by token are as follows: long vowels (217/316)>geminate consonants(87/316)>syllabic nasals(12/316). The error results by frequency are as follows: geminate consonants (19.3%, 87/449)>: long vowels (9.6%, 217/2243)>syllabic nasals (1.4%, 12/861). The results of the longitudinal study showed that the number of errors decreased during the process from the beginning level to the advanced level. A significant finding was that errors involving omission of the geminate consonant 「ッ」, i.e.: 「カプル」[kapɯɾɯ] (「カップル」[kappɯɾɯ]) persisted throughout the advanced level. In closing, I would like to make recommendations as to effective phonetic instruction. In particular, it is my hope that the findings from this research will be used to design targeted instruction for Japanese language learners regarding the transcription of long vowels and geminate consonants in katakana and lead to improved perception of mora length.
