Abstract:
Though best known as a documentary filmmaker, Errol Morris's recent use of other mediums including books, a blog, Twitter and short films demonstrates a willingness to rethink old questions in new terms. As Morris begin working across media he seems to be offering a critical take on the media itself.

Abstract:
The work of documentary director Errol Morris can be approached in a variety of ways as it intersects and engages with many of the major themes of film and television scholarship - genre, authorship, and historical representation. But while his films and television episodes expose debates within film and documentary studies, they also call up major elements of postmodern debates within the historical discipline. Morris makes historical documentaries that do not simply render a (hi)story visually; he also attempts to draw viewers' attention to the conventions and construction of both visual media and of history. His work reveals both his keen awareness of postmodern historical debates, and a willingness to play, to confront basic assumptions, question boundaries, and to contribute to those debates. In 'Errol Morris and the Art of History', I argue that Morris is a visual historian; his films and television episodes draw as much from his understanding of historiographical debates as they do from his knowledge and artistic approach to visual media. All of Morris' work challenges the notion of objectivity in both documentary filmmaking and history; he attempts to illuminate the limits and conventions of visual depictions of history; he uses strategies to denaturalise historical and narrative construction, the naturalising tendencies of visual media, and the conventions of documentary practice; and he attempts to promote increased critical reflection. This thesis closely examines Morris' documentary films and television episodes to consider the structure and strategies that characterise his work, and situate it within contemporary film and historical debates. I explore Morris' methods and approach to documentary and history, showing how his work relates to postmodern history debates, to written and visual representations of history, and to documentary history and theory, including more recent factual forms like reality television.

Abstract:

This doctoral thesis addresses the issue of moral dilemmas, specifically dilemmas of serious severity. These specific dilemmas are analyzed in an attempt to connect them to the thesis of Inescapable Moral Wrongdoing and the psychological trauma situation experienced by the agent in these situations. At first, examples of literature and philosophy that illustrate and explain each situation are presented. Such examples are Sophie s Choice, by William Styron, the dialogue between Socrates and Cephalus, in Book I of The Republic by Plato, and the case of the student of Sartre, in Existentialism is a Humanism. In a second moment, the study aims to carry out some important distinctions between types of moral dilemmas, namely: soluble, insoluble and symmetrical dilemmas. The main theories that deal with solution of moral dilemmas are exposed, divided in rationalist theories and "experientialist" theories. The former are analyzed so that it is shown that they do not accept genuine moral dilemmas, neither the thesis of the Inescapable Moral Wrongdoing, providing solutions for difficult moral dilemmas and even symmetrical, making use of principles of deontic logic, as the Kant Principle and the Agglomeration Principle. On the other hand, the theories of experientialist nature, which most interest this work, are those that accept the genuineness of moral dilemmas and admit the existence of the Inescapable Moral Wrongdoing. Therefore, some make use of the Remainder Thesis (TR), to which this work is affiliated. This theory states that in some specific moral dilemmas, even though the rational moral deliberation has been followed, the agent will suffer from feelings of regret, due to an emotional remainder concerning the duty that was not fulfilled or a violated value. Thus, according to the Remainder Thesis, the best explanation for this remainder and feelings of regret is the Inescapable Moral Wrongdoing theory. Therefore, the term "wrongdoing" is used in the sense of violating important moral values for the agent, and not in the sense of violating correct moral deliberation conclusions. To systematize the discussion, in a third moment, this study focuses on providing a definition capable of including the specific cases of moral dilemmas with inescapable moral wrongdoings (Definition of Moral Dilemmas with Inescapable Moral Wrongdoings - MDIMW). Moral dilemmas of serious severity are included in this definition, ones with a high moral cost to the agent, which are able to hurt the agent s moral sensibility and generate strong feelings of grief, which can lead to serious psychological trauma. The example of Sophie s Choice plays a crucial role in this discussion, while it fits the MDIMW. Finally, it is brought to the discussion the concept of "moral injury", recent term used in psychiatry to refer to situations of difficult moral choices usually faced by former war combatants. Certain serious moral choices faced by these agents would be able to generate "moral injury" to their moral codes, become risk factors for the manifestation of traumas and, in more serious cases, Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD). Thus, analyzing the relationships between moral choices of serious severity, inescapable moral wrongdoings, trauma and the possibility of its overcoming, are the main objectives of this study.

Abstract:
Although there is a drop on necropsies rates performed in each hospital, which is the number of necropsies by total of deaths, for a number of medical, technological and social reasons, necropsy remains as the main exam to evaluate the discrepancy of premortem and postmortem diagnoses and to estimate, morbidity and mortality and patient risks. Our study compares and describes the diagnoses of patients who died at the HC-FMRP/USP during the years of 2010 e 2014. We analyzed 1216 necropsies performed at he the HC-FMRP in 2010 and 2014, comparing agreement and disagreement between clinical diagnoses and necropsy reports, by the Goldman (1983) modified classification. The mean necropsy rate was 49%. Major discrepancies were 23.4%, with average of 15% for class 1 and 8.3% for Class 2 discrepancies. We found the most common discrepancies occurred at the ages of 80 to 100 years old. The most prevalent diagnostic was \'pneumonia\', found in 40% of all cases studied, among which 25% showed major discrepancies. Our results are compatible with the main recent studies in the field in Brazilian hospitals, in which the major discrepancies are between 32-35% and under the rates of the studies conducted abroad, in which major discrepancies were around 20%.

Abstract:
In this thesis, motivated by applications in Neuroscience, we study efficient Monte Carlo (MC) and Multilevel Monte Carlo (MLMC) methods based on the thinning for piecewise deterministic (Markov) processes (PDMP or PDP) that we apply to stochastic conductance-based models. On the one hand, when the deterministic motion of the PDMP is explicitly known we end up with an exact simulation. On the other hand, when the deterministic motion is not explicit, we establish strong estimates and a weak error expansion for the numerical scheme that we introduce. The thinning method is fundamental in this thesis. Beside the fact that it is intuitive, we use it both numerically (to simulate trajectories of PDMP/PDP) and theoretically (to construct the jump times and establish error estimates for PDMP/PDP)

Abstract:
This chapter explores what happens when documentary films focus on human subjects, hoping to reveal their subjectivity via the cinematic gaze. Many recent documentaries use interviews and re-enactments to reveal the ‘truth’ of their subjects as they attempt to conceal, justify, or rationalize their attitudes or actions. Werner Herzog’s, Errol Morris’, and Joshua Oppenheimer’s works expose what could be called paradoxical candour: the more a subject attempts to control an interview, the more their hidden ‘truth’ is unintentionally disclosed via subtle physical and emotional expression, with facial close-ups a key element in the interviews. This self-presentation, articulated through interview sequences, involves an exchange between filmmaker and subject, where the filmmaker’s characterization of a documentary subject as truthful or authentic—or as deceptive or inauthentic—can clash with the subject’s attempts to convey an image or control the narrative. Filmmakers like Morris and Oppenheimer exploit the dialectic between controlled self-disclosure and unintentional revelation, involving an interplay between performance, appearance, and imaginative engagement. Drawing on contemporary accounts of facial expression and close-ups’ role in cinematic presentation, this chapter examines how two of Errol Morris’s ‘Interrotron’ political documentaries, The Fog of War and The Unknown Known, exploit paradoxical candour with remarkable ethico-political results.

Abstract:
Abstract This contribution is a progressive effort to investigate the effect of the novel hybrid EOR method of Smart Water Assisted Foam (SWAF) technique on oil recovery from carbonates through numerical modeling. In this work, a core-scale model was utilized to provide an insight and a better understanding of the controlling mechanisms behind incremental oil recovery using a new hybrid EOR method consisting of a combination of smart water flooding and foam injection, termed as Smart Water Assisted Foam (SWAF) technology, particularly for carbonate reservoirs. A core-scale model encapsulating the physics of SWAF flooding was used to history-match experimental data and the model was further optimized utilizing the CMG simulator. For extracting the most value from this numerical investigation, a sensitivity analysis was performed to monitor the effect of influential parameters affecting oil recovery depending on the spectrum of the experimental data available. The objective functions used in the sensitivity analysis include minimizing the history-matching global error and maximizing the oil recovery profiles. Three sensitivity analysis approaches were used: Tornado-plot, SOBOL analysis, and MORRIS analysis. For generating the related proxy models, polynomial regression, and radial basis function (RBF) neural networks were investigated. Subsequently, the DECE-based and PSO-based optimization methods were employed to examine the effect of chemical design parameters such as smart water (Mg2+), surfactant aqueous solution (SAS), and foam concentrations along with the liquid production rate on the oil recovery factor during SWAF-flooding. Based on the numerical results, the experimental coreflooding data were accurately history-matched using the proposed model with a minimal error of 4.74% applying the PSO-based optimization method. Furthermore, in terms of the objective function prediction during the sensitivity analysis study, the comparative assessment of both proxy models on the verification plot reveals that the RBF neural network outperforms the polynomial regression. Consolidated findings from the three sensitivity analyses, i.e., the Tornado-plot, SOBOL, and MORRIS, outline three common parameters that significantly affect the oil recovery profiles that are liquid production rate (LigProdCon), foam (DTRAPW SAS2), and Mg2+ concentration (DTRAP Mg3) parameters. On the other hand, in terms of maximizing the oil recovery while minimizing the usage of injected chemicals during SWAF flooding, the optimal solution via the PSO-based approach is superior (97.89%) to the DECE-based optimal solutions (92.47%). This work presents one of the few studies investigating the numerical modeling of the SWAF process and capturing its effects on oil recovery. The optimized core scale model can be further used as a base for building a field-scale model and designing a successful pilot project.

Abstract:
Tolerance analysis for assembly of a three co-linear hinges door system is studied in this paper. An analysis model is developed, in which the typical alignment errors between the pins and cylinders are included. The successful assembly conditions are presented. Simulations are carried out based on the models and the Monte Carlo method that predict successful assembly. Analysis results show that the positioning error, the distance between the axis of the pin and surface of the leaf, the thickness of the leaf and the depth of the mortise are the top 3 sensitive input variables in the system.

Abstract:
The paper presents an assessment about using two classical reduced-order techniques, the Sherman-Morrison-Woodbury (SMW) formula and the Neumann expansion method, to enhance the computational efficiency of the stochastic analysis in mistuned bladed disc systems. The frequency responses of the blades are evaluated for different mistuning patterns via stiffness perturbations. A standard matrix factorization method is used as baseline to benchmark the results obtained from the SMW formula and Neumann expansion methods. The modified SMW algorithm can effectively update the inversion of an uncertainty matrix without the need of separated inversions, however with a limited increase of the computational efficiency. Neumann expansion techniques are shown to significantly decrease the required CPU time, while maintaining a low relative error. The convergence of the Neumann expansion however is not guaranteed when the excitation frequency approaches resonance when the mistuned system has either a low damping or high mistuning level. A scalar-modified Neumann expansion is therefore introduced to improve convergence in the neighbourhood of the resonance frequency.

Abstract:
Abstract Custom manufacturing of freeform surfaces, such as that of sheet metal components for automobiles, or the body panels and the composite parts of aircraft provides major challenges for traditional dedicated manufacturing systems (DMSs) due to the following factors: (1) mass customization, (2) rapid prototyping, (3) time and personnel cost, and (4) system complexity. Typically, flexible manufacturing systems (FMSs) and reconfigurable manufacturing systems (RMSs) are designed for fixed and high variability in the design parameters resulting in high system complexity. These design methodologies have many opportunities stemming from some limitations including: (1) lacking feature analysis of high variability products, (2) high system complexity, (3) reduced capacity for manufacturing of high curvature surfaces, and/or (4) low repeatability. An extended Multi-actuated Optimized Reconfigurable Freeform Surface (e-MORFS) mold is developed for a targeted application for the mass production of the freeform surfaces, e.g. custom foot orthoses (CFOs). The e-MORFS mold aims at the following goals: (1) to achieve size and shape variability for a complex product with a large population, (2) to reduce system complexity considering product features, and (3) to achieve high curvature surface reconstruction with proper boundary conditions (BCs) to avoid wrinkling and stretching. The e-MORFS mold achieves the maximum error range of 0.3–0.5mm for the whole population with only 6 actuators. This study provides the e-MORFS mold and design algorithm potentially used for targeted application of freeform surface manufacturing, e.g. CFOs. These design methodologies may guide designs of freeform surface manufacturing in applications, e.g. automobile, aerospace, biomechanics, and architecture.

Abstract:
