Abstrakt Cel: Celem artykułu jest omówienie początków psychoanalitycznej koncepcji symbolu w oparciu o teorię Zygmunta Freuda, Ernesta Jonesa oraz Melanie Klein i wskazanie na związek psychoanalitycznego i semiotycznego ujęcia symbolu. Metody: Przegląd literatury podążający za historycznym rozwojem koncepcji symbolu, przedstawiający najpierw jej podwaliny w pracach Zygmunta Freudanastępnie jej „przestrzenny” rozwój za sprawą Ernesta Jonesa aby na końcu omówić jej interpretację w oparciu o paradygmat relacji z obiektem autorstwa Melanie Klein (Klein, 1930/2007). Analiza omówionych ujęć w kontekście zbieżności w traktowaniu symbolu, jako współtworzonego przez wewnętrzny świat nieświadomej fantazji jednostki przy jednoczesnym zastosowaniu zdobyczy semiotyki, z gruntu zorientowanej na perspektywę zewnętrznego porządku. Rezultaty: Śledzenie rozważań Freuda na temat symbolu pozwala ustalić, jak jego wąska definicja symbolu zyskuje wielowymiarowość za sprawą nieoczywistego rozpoznania, że zasada substytucji ma swoje zastosowanie w języku nieświadomości. Wraz z tym odkryciem Freud wkracza w tzw. szeroką koncepcję symbolu, uwalniając jego interpretację od kulturowych klisz. Koncepcja Jonesa podąża za odkryciem Freuda i jednocześnie utrwala związek symbolu z jednostką za sprawą objaśniania go poprzez pryzmat regresji, a także związków krwi, kwestii narodzin i śmierci. Przełomowe wydaje się być ujęcie Klein, która podejmuje trudniejszy wątek odkrycia Freuda, a mianowicie problem „milczenia” symbolu, jego związku z tym, co niewyrażone, który udaje jej się rozwikłać za sprawą opisu konfiguracji lęków i pragnień. Wnioski: Przyjrzenie się początkom psychoanalitycznej koncepcji symbolu pozwala uchwycić jego istotę i wykazać jego ścisły związek z problematyką ekspresji, szczególnie zaś mowy i myślenia, ze względu na jego usytuowanie na granicy semiotyki i psychoanalizy. Celem niniejszej publikacji jest zaprezentowanie funkcji, jakie może pełnić muzyka w radiowej odmianie reportażu. Do jej zanalizowania wybrane zostały dokumenty audialne stworzone w ostatnim dziesięcioleciu przez wybitnych polskich reportażystów, takich jak Katarzyna Michalak, Cezary Galek, Julia Prus czy duet Hanna Bogorya-Zakrzewska i Ernest Zozuń. Fragmenty ich reportaży posłużyły jako egzemplifikacje rozmaitych ról, które może pełnić ścieżka dźwiękowa, by wymienić chociażby muzykę w funkcji ilustracyjnej, opisowej, jako element narracji, kompozycji czy też charakterystyki sytuacji, bohaterów itp.

After the publication of Professor Ernest Czogala Memorial Issue Part 1, I found 2 obituaries, one in the International Journal of Applied Mathematics and Computer Science, Vo1.9 No.1, published by the Technical University Press, Poland, by Maria Drelichowska and Lucjan Karwan of the Technical University, Silesia, Gliwice, Poland. The other was published"Fuzzy Systems in Medicine" (P.S. Szczepaniak eds.), Physica-Verlag, published in January 2000, which included my paper,"Fuzzy and Crisp Logical Rule Extraction Methods in Application to Medical Data," which I wrote in collaboration with W. Duch et al. This issue includes the final paper,"A Classifier Based on Neurofuzzy Inference," by Ernest Czogala, Jacek Leski, and Yoichi Hayashi, which is why this edition has been published later than planned. I would like include a comment by Samuel Ullman, written in Birmingham, Alabama, where Ernest's cousin and researcher James J. Buckley works: "Youth is not a time of life; it is a state of mind... Analiza wyrażeń z czasownikami ruchu w kontekście ekonomii i redundancji leksykalnej: Studium kontrastywne angielsko-hiszpańskieGłównym tematem niniejszego artykułu jest zjawisko ekonomii i redundancji leksykalnej w wyrażeniach czasownikowych. W tym celu została przeprowadzona analiza kontrastywna przykładów diakrytycznych w dwóch wybranych językach: angielskim i hiszpańskim. Badanie oparte jest na manualnym korpusie równoległym, składającym się z przykładów zebranych w dwóch wersjach tego samego literackiego: A moveable feast / París era una fiesta Ernesta Hemingwaya. Zadaniem autorki było przede wszystkim porównanie danych liczbowych uzyskanych z korpusu z teoriami istniejącymi w tradycji typologicznej. Biorąc pod uwagę parametry definiujące zjawisko ekonomii, została ustalona jego skala, która bazuje na analizie wyrażeń zawierających czasowniki ruchu. Odniesienia te doprowadzają do ustalenia, który język z dwóch wymienionych wyżej jest bardziej ekonomiczny, a który bardziej redundantny na płaszczyźnie leksykalnej. Análisis de las expresiones con verbos de movimiento en función de economía y redundancia léxicas: estudio contrastivo inglés-españolEl presente texto constituye un análisis contrastivo de economía y redundancia léxicas en las expresiones verbales. Para este objetivo se realiza un estudio bilateral de los ejemplos diacríticos en dos lenguas seleccionadas: inglés e español. El análisis se basa en un corpus paralelo, que consta de expresiones con verbos recogidos en dos versiones del mismo texto de literatura narrativa de Ernest Hemingway: A moveable feast y su traducción española: París era una fiesta. Nuestra tarea es de confrontar los datos numéricos obtenidos tras el censo con las teorías elaboradas por la tradición tipológica. Teniendo en consideración los parámetros definitorios del fenómeno de economía establecemos su índice numérico basado en el análisis empírico de las expresiones con una de las clases fundamentales de los verbos, los de movimiento. Estas referencias nos llevan a la conclusión de qué lengua de las dos citadas más arriba es realmente más económica y cuál es más redundante en el plano léxico.

Abstract:

W czasie swej emigracji w Paryżu Cyprian K. Norwid bardzo się interesował współczesną mu mitologią porównawczą, a także językoznawstwem historycznym, które również stosował jako metodę komparatystyczną. Artykuł próbuje ustalić źrodła jego własnych spekulacji mitologicznych i lingwistycznych. Okazuje się, że znane mu były zarówno ówczesne autorytety w tym zakresie (np. Ernest Renan, Max Müller, którzy posługiwali się metodologią pozytywistyczną), jak i zbiorowe opracowania encyklopedyczne wydane przez katolickiego duchownego, ojca J.P. Migne, które próbowały uzgodnić odkrycia nauki pozytywistycznej z tradycją chrześcijańską. Norwid zaczerpnął swą wiedzę z obu źródeł, choć perspektywa katolickich dykcjonarzy była mu bliższa (nie akceptował jednak bezkrytycznie wszystkich ich ustaleń). „Archaiczne” (z punktu widzenia nauki pozytywistycznej) korzenie jego spekulacji mitologicznych i językoznawczych broniły go jednak przed pokusą ulegania (pseudo)naukowemu dyskursowi rasowemu. Jego chrześcijański uniwersalizm spotyka się tu z agnostycznym uniwersalizmem Renana. W obu przypadkach istotnym elementem owego uniwersalizmu było podkreślanie ponadnarodowej wartości tradycji związanych ze Starym Testamentem i judaizmem.

Elizabeth Munk Clark and the Pawlikowski family The presented source edition discusses unknown letters of American translator and grant-holder of the Kościuszko Foundation in Poland in the 1930s, Elizabeth Munk Clark (1908–2001). They are concerned with her stay in Medyka and her cooperation with Michał Pawlikowski, translating his novel Change Your Bodies from Polish into English. In her letters to her parents, her fiancé Ernest Reiss and to Pawlikowski, Clark shares her observations from the summer of 1932, describing not only the Medyka residents and the work on translation, but also Cracow, Americans staying there as well as her impressions of daily life in Poland. It hardly ever happens that the same or similar things get described by one person in letters to three different recipients. That is why this correspondence, so far completely unknown, is worth introducing to a broader circle of readers.

Abstract:

Nadzieja radykalna to nadzieja obecna dotąd w dyskursie religijnym. Począwszy od Nietzschego tematyka ta zaczęła się również pojawiać w dyskursie filozoficznym. Punktem wyjścia artykułu jest myśl Ernesta Blocha, który uczynił z nadziei centralną kwestię rozważań filozoficznych, choć nie udało mu się rozwinięcie tej idei. W tym względzie pierwszeństwo przypada Nietzschemu, który dążył do złączenia filozofii z problematyką nadziei. Ostatnim filozofem, którego poglądy zostaną wzięte pod uwagę jest Quentin Meillassoux, dążący w ostatnich latach do filozoficznego podtrzymania nadziej dotąd kojarzącej się z religią. Punktem docelowym rozważań, oprócz próby oceny propozycji każdego ze wspomnianych filozofów, jest sformułowanie wniosków odnoszących się do konsekwencji pojawienia się problematyki nadziei radykalnej na gruncie filozofii. Wskażę na sposób współczesnego filozofowania, który zdaje się otwierać szanse na powiązanie tej problematyki z filozofią. Can Philosophy substitute for religion? Philosophies of Radical Hope from Nietzsche to Meillassoux Radical hope is hope that could be found in religious discourse. Starting from Nietzsche, the concept entered also philosophical discourse. The article takes as its starting point the thought of Ernest Bloch, who placed hope at the center of philosophical thought, although, he was not able to develop the idea. In this respect, priority should be given to Nietzsche, whose views were taken up by Quentin Meillasoux, who has been aiming to philosophically uphold hope that has been usually associated with religion. The end point of the present deliberation, in addition to an attempt at evaluating the abovementioned philosophers’ propositions, is formulation conclusions concerning the consequences of the appearance of the problematics of radical hope in the field of philosophy. I will point to a way of contemporary practice of philosophy, which appears to open up opportunities to tie in this problematics with philosophy.

Ernest Hemingway has rarely seemed a reliable pen pal, not through any fault of his own, but because the evidence for determining any such identity has been hard to assemble. In 2011, Sandra Spanier and Robert W. Trogdon published the first volume of Hemingway’s collected letters, and in doing so, prompted a reevaluation of his epistolary habit; one that requires careful editing and close textual scrutiny. Taking the first volume of the new Letters as a case study, this essay offers an interpretative approach to matters of textuality, typographic expression, and mechanical accident that lie at the heart of Hemingway’s early life-writing.

Cancellation of donation in the Polish Code of Obligations of 1933The article provides an analysis of the provisions of the Polish Code of Obligations of 1933 concerning cancellation of donation. The author discusses the provisions of Articles 364–369 of the Code, taking into account the impact of the various donation cancellation provisions included in regional codes and in other civil codes, i.e. the German Civil Code of 1896; Austrian Civil Code of 1811; Napoleonic Code of 1804; volume X, part 1 of the Russian Svod Zakonov Rossiyskoy Imperii of 1832; Swiss obligation law of 1911 and the draft Russian law of obligations of 1913.He also compares the final versions of the articles with their versions from the draft law of obligations by Dr Ernest Till and Prof Roman Longchamps de Berier, who were members of the Codification Commission. In addition, the author cites selected judgements of the Supreme Court dealing with the matter.Der Widerruf einer Schenkung im polnischen Schuldrechtsbuch aus dem Jahre 1933Der Aufsatz stellt die Beschlüsse des polnischen Schuldrechtsbuches aus dem Jahre 1933 betreffend den Widerruf einer Schenkung dar. Besprochen wurden daher die Vorschriften der Artikel 364–369 dieses Gesetzbuches. Die Bestimmungen der einzelnen Artikel betreffend diese Institution wurden unter Berücksichtigung des Einflusses der einzelnen Vorschriften betreffend den Widerruf einer Schenkung, die in den Gesetzbüchern der Teilungsgebiete und in anderen Zivilgesetzbüchern, d.h. im deutschen Bürgerlichen Gesetzbuch BGB aus dem Jahre 1896, im österreichischen Allgemeinen Bürgerlichen Gesetzbuch ABGB aus dem Jahre 1811, im Napoleons Code civil aus dem Jahre 1804, im Buch 10 Teil I des russischen Swod Zakonow Rossijskoj Imperii aus dem Jahre 1832 sowie dem schweizerischen Obligationsrecht in der Fassung von 1911 und im Entwurf des russischen Verpflichtungsrechtes aus dem Jahre 1913 analysiert.Der letzte Wortlaut der einzelnen Artikel wurde auch mit ihrer Formulierung im einführenden Entwurf des Schuldrechtes von Prof. Dr. Ernst Till und Prof. Dr. Roman Longchamps de Berier, den Mitgliedern der Kodifikationskommission verglichen. Abstract:

Festiwal Pieśni i Piosenki Religijnej Sacrosong (1969–1999) powstał w czasie, gdy stopniowo wchodziły w życie postanowienia Soboru Watykańskiego II, a wśród nich to dotyczące otwierania Kościoła katolickiego na nowe formy ewangelizacji. Równocześnie olbrzymią popularność w świecie zyskiwała muzyka rockandrollowa. Znalazła ona entuzjastów także wśród muzyków chrześcijańskich, którym rockowe brzmienia posłużyły do przekazywania treści religijnych. Lata 60. XX wieku to również czas, w którym znacząco wzrosło zainteresowanie gatunkiem piosenki, której w twórczości religijnej dały wyraz m.in. utwory francuskiego jezuity Aimé Duvala. Pomimo trudnej sytuacji społeczno-politycznej PRL, zarówno moda na muzykę młodzieżową jak i na piosenkarstwo religijne bardzo szybko dotarły do grona zainteresowanych. Pierwszą sceną dla repertuaru religijnego w Polsce był festiwal Sacrosong, który w założeniach miał nie tylko sprzyjać powstawaniu i promocji nowych utworów w języku polskim, lecz również angażować w działalność religijną środowisko artystów i młodzież i w ten sposób przeciwdziałać ateizacji społeczeństwa. W ciągu trzydziestu lat podczas ogólnopolskich Sacrosongów można było usłyszeć zarówno piosenki konkursowe, jak i pieśni, kantaty czy oratoria powstałe na zamówienie organizatorów. Wydarzeniom muzycznym towarzyszyły spektakle teatralne, wystawy, wieczory poezji, konferencje i dyskusje. W jury konkursu zasiadały takie osobistości, jak Wojciech Kilar czy Stefan Kisielewski, muzykę na zamówienie pisali m.in. Jerzy Bauer, Marian Sawa, a teksty – Roman Brandstaetter, Ernest Bryll czy ks. Jan Twardowski. Artykuł porusza zagadnienia dotyczące historii Sacrosongów, repertuaru oraz społecznej i kulturotwórczej roli tego wydarzenia. Całości dopełniają refleksje związane z samym gatunkiem „głównej bohaterki” festiwalu – piosenki religijnej.

The paper examines the appearance of ‘psychoanalytic psychical research’ in interwar Britain, notably in the work of Nandor Fodor, Harry Price and others, including R. W. Pickford and Sylvia Payne. The varying responses of Sigmund Freud and Ernest Jones to the area of research are discussed. These researches are placed in the context of the increasingly widespead use of psychoanalytic and psychological interpretations of psychical events in the period, which in turn reflects the penetration of psychoanalysis into popular culture. The saturation of psychical research activity with gender and sexuality and the general fascination with, and embarrassment about, psychical activity is explored.

Abstract:

E. Barker twice wrote essays entitled ‘The composition and structure of Aristotle’s Politics’, first as a journal article in 1931, and later in 1946 as part of the introduction to his translation of the Politics. In these two essays, he came to exactly the opposite conclusions. In the first paper, he distinguished three periods in Aristotle’s life and assigned to each of them three ‘blocks’ in the Politics, based on the criterion of how closely these blocks were related to, or are removed from, Plato’s political theory. In doing so, he not only followed W. Jaeger’s genetic approach, but also went beyond it by assuming that there were three different strata of Aristotle’s political philosophy. In 1946, however, Barker rejected not only Jaeger’s approach, but his own method of reading Aristotle’s Politics. This paper evaluates the merit of Barker’s arguments and comes to the conclusion not only that Barker’s essay from 1946 ignored the intellectual context of the Politics, but also that his view of the Politics as unitary in composition and structure overlooks many problems this work poses.

The following article combines an analysis of production techniques in the French automobile industry between the wars and a rich supply of photographs that visually document the course of innovation in the industry. The text and illustrations show that, though production managers at Citroën, Peugeot, and Renault were aware of the methods of Henry Ford and Frederick W. Taylor, they adapted them to specific situations within the French industry and within their own companies. By looking specifically at the work of Ernest Mattern, who held production responsibilities at both Peugeot and Citroën and observed Renault as well, the essay traces the incremental changes in the organization of automobile manufacturing in France before the Second World War.

Parting with a villain? Yuan Shikai in light of new research Yuan Shikai, the military strongman of late Qing Empire, talented administrator and reformer, crucial figure during the 1911 (Xinhai) Republican Revolution, president with dictatorial power and, finally, a self-proclaimed emperor, is the most controversial figure of 20th-century China. After his death during the civil war that his actions provoked, historiography (communist and non-communist) portrayed Yuan as traitor and chief villain. In following years Yuan was almost unanimously denounced by Soviet (S.L. Tikhvinsky, O. Nepomnin) and Western (L. Sharman, E. Hummel) historiography. His first biography, written by Jerome Ch’en in 1960, fully upheld this portrait. Significant studies (1968 and 1977) of Ernest P. Young, based on important primary sources, went unnoticed at the time. It was also the case with Stephen McKinnon’s volume on Yuan as brilliant Qing official in Tianjin and Beijing between 1901 and 1908. During the two last decades of the 20th century some smaller studies changed this unfavorable portrait. In the eyes of Marie-Claire Bergère, Madleine Ch’i, Luke Kwong and Henerietta Harrison, Yuan appears as a far-sighted statesman and defender of Chinese raison d’état. The last biography written by Patrick Fuliang Shan portrays Yuan as an extremely power-hungry and astute politician and as a conservative reformer and modernizer, at the same time. His political failure was both his personal tragedy and a catastrophe of the Chinese nation.

The Berlin Republic of the twenty-first century, writes W. R. Smyser, is destined to be unlike all previous German states. A status quo power and a stable democracy, it is neither the battleground of others nor dominant over them, neither reticent like Bonn nor arrogant like the Berlin of the late Hohenzollerns. The Cold War was “the essential incubator” of this “new Germany” (p. 402). It provided Germany with the tools of change—a role through which to overcome its past, and time to overcome old wounds. Aiding the incubation were contradictory Communist policies, astute Western statesmanship, and bravely pursued Eastern popular aspirations. Two Germans and two Americans, Smyser avers, stand at the heart of the eventual Communist defeat: East German leader Walter Ulbricht, West German Chancellor Willy Brandt, President Ronald Reagan, and Smyser’s onetime mentor, General Lucius Clay. Mighty assists go to British Foreign Secretary Ernest Bevin, Soviet leaders Joseph Stalin and Mikhail Gorbachev, and the inspirational Polish Pope. Further down this idiosyncratic hierarchy stand Chancellors Adenauer and Kohl and U.S. President George H. W. Bush.

Abstract:

In December 1913, William Ernest Johnson (1858–1931), a Cambridge logician, published a famous article on demand theory in the Economic Journal (EJ) entitled “The Pure Theory of Utility Curves.” Although Johnson's treatment of the subject was in some ways original, in others it strongly resembled the analysis set forth by Vilfredo Pareto in earlier contributions, particularly in the Manuel d'économie politique (Italian edition 1906, French edition 1909). Despite this resemblance, Johnson did not cite Pareto. This failure to acknowledge Pareto's precedence aroused resentment and some suspicion of plagiarism among the Italian Paretians. In the end, however, the Paretian economists of the period generally assumed that Johnson was unfamiliar with Pareto's works and had obtained his results independently. For example, in 1916, Luigi Amoroso published a review of Johnson's 1913 paper in the Giornale degli Economisti, in which he wrote, “From Johnson's article it comes out that Johnson does not know Pareto's work” (Amoroso 1916, p. 410, author's translation). Amoroso attributed Johnson's ignorance of Pareto's work to a more general ignorance on the part of English economists, “Johnson's lacuna, more than particular to him, is a lacuna of the area in which he lives” (Amoroso 1916, p. 410, author's translation).

Artykuł charakteryzuje wpływ wydanego w latach 1882–1883 Dziennika intymnego Henriego-Frédérica Amiela na twórczość i światopogląd Henryka Sienkiewicza, zwłaszcza zaś na jego powieść Bez dogmatu. Polski pisarz zapoznał się z dziełem Amiela na pewno na początku 1890 roku. Wydaje się jednak, że sława Amiela, potęgowana szkicami o nim Ernesta Renana i Paula Bourgeta, już wcześniej zaważyła na przeorientowaniu się twórczych zainteresowań Sienkiewicza odchodzącego pod koniec lat 80. XIX wieku od epiki historycznej ku problemom współczesności i formie powieści pierwszoosobowej. Przedmiotem analizy porównawczej jest więc głośna w Europie powieść Bez dogmatu (1891) przedstawiająca kryzys nowoczesnej tożsamości europejskiej. Analiza zarówno powieści, jak i epistolografii Sienkiewicza wykazuje liczne analogie światopoglądowe z myślą Amiela, zwłaszcza w kwestii rozumienia przyczyn kryzysu kultury europejskiej oraz człowieka drugiej połowy XIX wieku. Obaj pisarze wskazywali na destrukcyjny wpływ racjonalistycznej autoanalizy, metodologii pozytywizmu odniesionej do humanistyki oraz mechanistycznie pojmowanej idei postępu. Sienkiewicza do Amiela zbliżyły także polityczny profetyzm i stosunek do ruchów rewolucyjnych, charakterystyczny dla przedstawicieli nowoczesnego konserwatyzmu europejskiego reprezentowanego przez Edmunda Burke’a i Alexisa de Tocqevilla. Sienkiewicz and Amiel. About a Meeting of Mind and Two Modern Intimist Strategies The article presents the influence of Henri-Frédéric Amiel’s The Journal Intime published between 1882–1883 on the works and world-view of the 1905 Polish Nobel Prize winner Henryk Sienkiewicz, and in particular on his novel Without Dogma. The Polish writer must have read Amiel’s journal around early 1890. It seems however, that Amiel’s popularity, amplified by Ernest Renan’s and Paul Bourget’s sketches about him, had already induced a shift in Sienkiewicz’s artistic interests, who in the late 1880s moved from historical epics in favour of the issues of modernity and a first- -person-narrative novel. The comparative analysis investigates the Europe-famous novel Without Dogma (1891) touching upon the crisis of modern European identity. The analysis of the novel, as well as Sienkiewicz’s epistolography, points out to a number of world-view analogies with Amiel, especially in terms of where they saw the roots of the crisis of European culture and humanity in the second half of the 19th century. Both writers emphasized the destructive influence of rationalist self- -analysis, positivist methodology drawing on humanities, and a mechanical perception of the idea of progress. Sienkiewicz also shared Amiel’s political prophetism and approach to revolutionary movements, characteristic for representatives of modern European conservatism professed by Edmund Burke and Alexis de Tocqueville.

Abstract:

W. B. Yeats's dramatic career was transformed in the 1910s through a series of collaborations in London. In an essay from the period, “Certain Noble Plays of Japan,” he writes: “I have invented a form of drama, distinguished, indirect and symbolic.” This form, like many other modernist inventions, is better understood as something else, in this case the alchemy of his earlier work, some eclectic influences, and the contributions of his American, English, French, and Japanese collaborators. Together, this group of artists drew on Irish mythology, the occult, the continental avant-garde, and—as often has been stressed—Japanese noh. Originally, the “Certain Noble Plays” essay was published as an introduction to a related noh project, Ezra Pound's liberal completion of Ernest Fenollosa and Hirata Kiichi's incomplete translations. There have been at least four book-length studies on the relationship between Yeats and noh, as well as many theses and articles. It remains an exemplum of transnational modernist theatre.

Abstract:

From the travelogue to King Kong: Science expeditions as a cinematic motif of the 1920s and 1930s in light of the social imaginaries of the eraScience expeditions are a staple of cinematic fiction. The theme has been utilized in dozens of permutations in different media and film genres ranging from adventure flicks to family comedies and horrors. Indiana Jones, undoubtedly the best-known “field researcher” in the world, is one of popular culture’s most recognizable figures. In this article, however, I am interested in an era predating his cinematic debut by at least a half century. Its main focus is the 1920s/1930s threshold in which science expeditions began constituting themselves as a motif of cinema and the reasons why such a seemingly august, scholarly enterprise transformed into a popcultural phenomenon. My analysis will focus on two often overlooked but massively popular genres of the era: expeditionary films and exotic exploitation films, both of which, I argue, can be traced back to the ethnographic travelogue. I begin my inquiries — and end them — with Merian C. Cooper’s and Ernest B. Schoedsack’s King Kong 1993, which provides me with a framework for describing the ever-fickle relationship between documentary, fiction, truth and fabrication, which defined the cinematic representations of science expeditions from the very beginning.
