Full textBernard of abbeville (a. K. A. Bernard of tiron), born around the middle of the 11th century, successively served as a monk at the saint-cyprien abbey in poitiers, as prior of saint-savin-sur-gartempe and as an abbot of saint-cyprien, was among those reformers anxious to restore the strict observance of the rule in the benedictine abbeys of aquitaine. In 1100, following a dispute with the abbey of cluny and pope pascal ii, he became a + prince of hermits ; in the forests of maine and a itinerant preacher for the gregorian reform. Having led an eventful life, he resolved in 1109 to establish his disciples in tiron, perche. He died there in 1114, in the odour of sanctity, and in the 12th century his abbey became the head of one of the new congregations of the benedictine monachism. The life, personality, and miracles of bernard of tiron are the subject of one of the longest ans most complex hagiographies of the 12th century - written by one of his disciples, geoffroy le gros. The thesis is based on the critical bilingual editions of the vita, the manuscripts, and the relative texts on bernard of tiron. It attempts to restore the true personality of bernard of tiron and his commitment to the gregorian reform. It also examines the reasons, importance, and tendancies of hermiticism in werstern france at the turn of the 11th century. It demonstrates the originality of the order of tiron in the first decades after its inception, with regards to both the institutions (a new class of crafstmen) and the geographic settlements (from aquitaine to scotland). The structure of the vita, its patristic and literary references, demonstrates the persistence in the 12th century of the hagiographic model inherited from history. It also reveals a new sanctity which is not so much based on miracles (of little importance to the canonization file) as it is based on asceticism and a new concept of charity, which announces the franciscan spirituality a century in advance

Full textHermit leaves the world for meeting God. This fact that accompanied the Church all the long of her history. In Champagne and Lorraine, eremitical life appears especially dynamic at three times : end of 5th century to end of 7th century, end of 10th to 12th century and end of 16th to end of 17th century. This last era is the golden age of the movement. Reasons of revival of eremitical life in the second half of 16th century are manies. Books praise of solitude. The success of spiritual currents (dévotio moderna and spanish spirituality) favorable to solitude is real. Climate factors favour the movement. Wars of Religion, the League lead to the desire to leave a world of violence. The state of regular clergy plays a part too. Send to the pastoral or not yet reformed, it is not satisfactory for peoples who search solitude, all the more that monastic rules are for some peoples a too rigid framework. Finally, some hermits have an aura and arouse vacations. In the 17th and in the beginning of the 18th century, literatur and arts spread a positiv picture of hermit. But it’s mean an old or faraway hermit. The contemporary hermit is criticized. The first is an independent spirit out of place in an order society. So, supervision of hermits in the first decades of the 17th century is made by diocesan congregations at Langres (1623) and Toul (1655 and 1676).The 410 hermitages listed in Lorraine and Champagne at the beginning of the 18th century show the success of eremitical life. But the result is not homogenous in the space. eremitical life is principally present ant active in dioceses of Toul, Metz and Langres. Dioceses of Verdun, Reims and above Châlons and Troyes are clearly less concerned. Here play regional idiosyncrasies : importance of protestantism and jansenism in these dioceses create a spiritual competition unfavorable to eremitical life and the personality of the bishop, when he’s in disfavor about hermits, as Le Tellier at Reims, take a big importance. The study of hermitages in sacred geography shake the myth of hermitage faraway of all. The hermit, often born in lower or middle social classes, has a career sometime complex (widowerhood, poverty). His spirituality is often the same of Christian people but sometime exceptional and he is seeing as a saint. The 1670 decade is the beginning of a time disfavor to hermits. The bishops of Reims then Metz and Verdun forget hermits in their dioceses. The Age of Enlightenment makes fun of hermits in their woods. Nevertheless their quality is proved. Eremitical life declines at the 18th century and miss practically behind the French Revolution. Hermits are expelled and hermitages sold. Some hermits exist at the XIXth century. Often, the hermitage is broken after the death of the last hermit. Only the chapel remains. Eremitical life miss physically but literature and art perpetuate an imaginary hermit

Full textThis thesis is a thought about the vitality of desert thematic in literature field. In this case, this thematic is inseparable from that of primitive monasticism as the corpus in question; I mean Les Marches de sable, Marie d’Egypte and Macaire Le Copte is presented as hagiographic. Therefore, the link between desert and monasticism in these three novels has led us to identify contemporary writers’ need of keeping bringing up such thematic. The desert has appeared as the place of spiritual experience in all its ambivalence, I mean devil temptation space, but also ascetic elevation space. To the writers, it is also a way to bring a lucid eye to the current society which is being reified because one cannot say only that it is already reified. In conclusion, to these three writers, not only the desert is a way to evidence their conception of literary space which really appears as a paradoxical space as it can at the same time be a sharing and a seclusion space, but also a writer’s workplace. It appears that the writer is image of hermit, that is, he is a sort of absolute seeker

The cultural identity is fundamental for the development of a community, this allows it to be consolidated as a group, besides, they have the initiative to strengthen for chiefly the traditions and customs, being transmitted from generation to generation. The loss of identity and the lack of recognition of heritage, is the main reason whence the community loses interest in protecting the buildings with the zones of historical relevance of the territory. A case of this is in the San Esteban commune, located in the region of Valparaíso, where La Ermita park and house is located, an iconic and unique property in its style, which is in a state of advanced deterioration, bringing as a consequence the forgetting of a part of the communal history. The methodological process of the project was divided into three stages, the first to recognize a general problem, a topic of importance at the national level and the terrain where they apply. The second is a deepening of the place by means of analysis that covers from the territorial to the micro level of the terrain, determination of FODA through conclusions, secondary problems and the selection of users based on communal deficiencies. Finishing in a third stage of master plan and then the design of the project. As a result of this process we observed the advanced deterioration of the communal heritage and the lack of both cultural and commercial equipment for the commune. In order to deliver solutions to the community, the rehabilitation project of the most important HCZ of the commune is carried out, the La Ermita Park, allowing to have basic services and new recreational green areas. This project acts as a connector for the green areas and the urban scene, allows the autonomy and consolidation of the urban area of San Esteban, rescue the Chilean customs and rural traditions and appraise the heritage.

Full textThis work deals with a poem of Paganus Bolotinus canon of Chartres in the first half of the 12th century. Under the clergy\'s writing a lot of attacks are done on alleged hermits who wander around that region spreading the doctrines of the new religions. Due to this fact they are considered false hermits. The study of these verses written against the false hermits, who go to the city in order to preach, allowed us to go further the walls of Chartres. In the first place, the analysis of the structure of the poetic discourse made possible to give sense to the document and to verify the recognition of those to whom the canon\'s words were addressed. Then, once the characters in the narrative were understood, we established some grounds about the medieval eremitism, showing the necessity to think it as a plural phenomenon, in order to consider if any non-orthodox practices and representations existed among those attracted by the different aspects of this type of religious life. Finally, we made some comments about the theoretical aspect that involves the work of the historian who reflects on cultural levels and its dynamics, always having in mind the relations with the studied society and the written form imprinted in the textual report that is his object of research

Full textOur thesis deals with the In Platonis Phaedrum Scholia of Hermias of Alexandria, that is, the only ancient commentary on Plato’s Phaedrus that has survived from antiquity to our time. Written in the first half of the 5th century AD, this commentary consists of three books. We have carefully studied the first book of which we provide the first translation into Italian, accompanied by critical notes and comments. Our work consists of three parts. In the first part of our thesis, we provide a precise picture of the historical and philosophical context in which the figure of Hermias of Alexandria, professor of Platonic philosophy in Alexandria between 435 and 455 AD, is situated. Particular attention is paid to the problem of the true authorship of the Commentary, which the communis opinio attributes to Syrianus, master of Hermias, rather than to Hermias himself. We try to challenge this thesis by arguing, on the contrary, that Hermias must be seen as the real author of the Commentary. In the second part of the thesis, we offer an authentic monograph on the figure of Socrates in Hermias, enriched by a comparison between Socrates and the Arian Christ, Hermias and the Patriarch Cyril of Alexandria. After this monograph, we tackled other questions arising from the analysis of the first book of the Commentary: rhetoric, hermeneutics, mythology, physics, epistemology. The third and last part of our thesis consists of the translation into Italian of the first book of the Commentary on the Phaedrus, with notes and commentaries

Full textThis thesis consists in an edition of hagiographical legends concerning women dressed up as male anchorites, or penitent prostitutes. The critical texts have been based on the most ancient manuscripts: one of them is currently kept in the Bodleian Library in Oxford. It was written in 1030 in the Georgian Monastery of the Holy Cross in Jerusalem. The other one is the manuscript A95 of Tbilisi, which was written in Parxal (Tao Klardzeti) by the end of the Xth century. Both of these collections have been carefully compared with all of the extant Georgian copies. The French translation aims at giving an accurate picture of all the particularities of the Georgian versions. A second part of the dissertation consists in a textological study. The Georgian has been compared with the extant Greek redactions, as well as with other essential redactions, mainly Syriac and Arabic. It appears that the Greek original from which the Georgian has been translated mirrors a more ancient stage of the Greek tradition than the extant manuscripts. Certain stories such as "The Life of the Alexandrian Prostitute" have been preserved in Georgian and Syriac, whereas the Greek original is no longer extant Moreover, the Georgian bears evidence of an Arabic substrate. The edited works are the hollowing: Life and Penance of the Thais the Egyptian; Life of saint Pelagia of Antioch; Life of saint Mary the Egyptian; Life of saint Abraham and his niece Mary; Life of a Virgin who was the daughter of the Constantinopolitan prince; Life of saint Marina; Life of the prostitute of Alexandria; Life of Anastasia, the Patrician. Synoptical tables display numerous parallels between the texts. The work is completed by a full Georgian-Greek index of the texts

Full textIn keeping with benedictine orthodoxy, hermits and monks living in communities form a character-type in medieval literature sharing the same religious ideal of devotion to god through the renunciation of worldly values and through contemplation. However the changing and contrasting facets of coenobitism differ from the almost uniformly positive image of the hermits, for the persistence of secular values in the black benedictine monastic tradition engenders negative images of the coenobites in certain genres ("chansons de geste", "litterature plaisante",. . . ). However, their image improves as texts begin to borrow the models for their monks from the new monastic orders which, from the end of the eleventh century on, revert to the value of poverty and penitence characteristic of the first fathers. Even though the character of the coenobite is understated and less clearly defined, it parallels that on the hermit. The latter is featured as the white "preudome" who, with benedictine "discretion", eschews the most extreme forms of mortification favoured by certain eastern ascetics, and who in the serenety derived from
