Abstract:
The aim of this survey is to: • determine the nature of burnout according to contemporary theories and empirical findings; • determine the contributive and causal factors, symptoms and results of burnout; • investigate methods through which burnout can be identified, prevented and/or copied with; • identify the occurrence of burnout as experienced by principals of primary and secondary schools; • provide guidelines for principals to enable them to identify, prevent and/or cope with burnout. In an attempt to achieve the objectives of this study a literature study and empirical investigation were conducted. From the literature study burnout appears to be a multidimensional (psycho-biosocial) syndrome that consists of the basic components of emotional, physical and cognitive exhaustion, depersonalization, reduced personal accomplishment and a deviation from the normal behaviour pattern. The exhaustion originates especially from sustained negative stress related job circumstances, depersonalization occurs as a result of relationship facets of the individual and reduced personal accomplishment is primarily related to the individual's self-concept. Further all the above mentioned components lead to certain characteristic changes in behaviour. Burnout is a syndrome that occurs on all the levels of a profession where the individual (i.e. principal) has to work with other people (i.e. teachers, parents, scholars, authorities and the general public). The causes (variables) and symptoms of burnout coincide with the basic components of burnout. The causes of burnout are mainly attributed to interpersonal and organizational variables. Burnout results in certain negative implications for the organization with relation to the quality of work that is delivered, health problems that lead to financial implications for the individual and the organization, and other negative implications, for example a deficiency in a quality existence for the individual. An awareness of burnout, a knowledge on burnout, methods through which burnout can be identified on an individual and organizational level, and an awareness of the mutability and continuousness of the variables of burnout, are prerequisites for the handling of burnout. Direct-active, indirect-active, direct-inactive and indirect-inactive coping mechanisms can be applied to handle burnout on an interpersonal level. Direct-active coping mechanisms can also be applied on organizational level for the handling of burnout. Active coping mechanisms for burnout appear to be more successful on the long term than inactive coping   mechanisms which only offer temporary relief. Psychiatric coping methods have to be applied if the individual has reached the final phases of burnout. The "Maslach Burnout Inventory" (MBI) was used to determine burnout amongst school principals. The investigation portrayed that approximately one third of the school principals experienced a high degree of burnout and one third experienced a mild degree of burnout. Biographical and demographical variables which had influence on the degree of burnout as experienced by principals were the chronological age of the principal, the language medium and the socio-economic status of the schools with which the principal was associated and the geographical area in which the school was situated. To effectively cope with burnout, principals should identify their own levels of burnout. Due to the fact that the components, causes and symptoms of burnout correlate with one another, coping mechanisms can be selected from the basic components, and/or the causes, and/or the symptoms of burnout. A thorough knowledge of burnout will enable the principal to identify burnout in time to prevent it, rather than to have to cope with it or receive treatment for it at a later stage.

This paper examines the creative persona of Erich Mendelsohn's seemingly incompatible bodies of architecture in Europe, Palestine and the U.S. The limits of existing formal analysis to explain his architectural shifts were the impetus for investigating the architectural position that facilitated not only Mendelsohn's iconic architecture in Germany, but its appropriation to Palestine as well. Beside his artistic ambiance, is also Mendelsohn's religious faith, national identity and political convictions. Mendelsohn was part of the Jewish post-assimilated generation in Germany - this experience is extended by Mendelsohn to the art of building, which was facilitated intellectually by Martin Buber's (early) teaching about the creative Jewish yearning for unity. The paper focus on how Mendelsohn's consistent architectural and political position discloses itself first in the industrial West (Germany), where it engaged the striving architectural debated of the period, and then in the Orient. In Palestine, where he took part in the "cultural Zionist" agenda, he remolded Modern Architecture into a non- Western country.

Abstract:
Erich Fried, ultimately a prominent German poet, had been forced to flee from his native country after the annexation of Austria in 1938, and remained in London throughout his life. In wartime London he published in German exile journals. By 1945 two volumes of his poetry had appeared. This success augured well for the future. Yet the post-war period did not bring the publications he had hoped for. Fried remained in London. He nevertheless attempted to secure publications in Germany, but his endeavours were made more difficult by his prolonged exile. In London Fried maintained contact with other German exile writers and made no attempt at assimilation. He remained orientated towards German-speaking Europe. His work of this period was out of step with developments in Germany and this explains the poor response to his first publications there. Employment with the BBC led to his very successful translation of Dylan Thomas' Under Milk Wood. This earned him a reputation as a translator and led to two poetry volumes and a novel. Fried was subsequently invited to join the influential Gruppe 47. The publication in 1966 of und Vietnam und secured Fried's reputation as a political poet and marked the return in his work to political themes which he had abandoned in 1945. Subsequently Fried was extremely productive and published may volumes of poetry and prose and a variety of translations from English, including his much admired Shakespeare translations. Fried overcame the disadvantageous situation of his prolonged exile. In the later period he spent much time in German-speaking Europe, returning to Britain to recuperate and write. Fried had been made homeless in 1938 and never regained his Heimat, although it would appear that he welcomed the absence of the confines of a narrowly defined nationality and home.

Abstract:
O objetivo principal desta pesquisa é analisar o problema da liberdade nas obras de Paulo Freire escrita até 1970, compreendendo o percurso de apropriação que este educador fez da Psicologia Humanista de Erich Fromm. Trata-se de uma pesquisa histórica, circunscrita no âmbito da História da Educação e da Psicologia do Século XX. Como fontes, utilizamos as obras dos autores em questão focando-nos em dois aspectos: a) na apreensão dos problemas que interessavam ambos os autores e nas soluções dadas pelos mesmos naquele contexto histórico; b) no entendimento das hipóteses e expectativas que consideravam como válidas. O estudo realizado evidenciou-nos que ambos os autores partiram de suas realidades, transformando suas reflexões em contribuições concretas para interpretar o problema da liberdade. Ambos viveram a crise profunda do mundo contemporâneo causada pelo terror do totalitarismo e da ideologia, cuja perversidade ameaçou a liberdade humana e o funcionamento de uma sociedade democrática e que se traduziu no campo intelectual pelo esfacelamento da tradição filosófica e religiosa. Ambos utilizaram novos métodos para justificarem a busca da resposta ao problema da liberdade em um século marcado pela violência. Embora a matriz ontológica do conceito de liberdade de Freire seja diferente de Fromm, contrariando nossa hipótese inicial de trabalho, Freire, encontra na psicologia humanista de Fromm uma possibilidade de reflexão sobre a questão educacional brasileira, partindo da história de sua tradição educacional e da inexperiência democrática do povo brasileiro, numa ótica interdisciplinar, com base filosófica antropológica e oferece categorias psicológicas para análise da formação da consciência dos indivíduos, ponto chave da liberdade humana, extremamente necessária para a educação de uma sociedade democrática.
The main objective of this research paper is to analyze the problem of freedom in Paulo Freire\'s works written until 1970, encompassing the trajectory of appropriation that this educator does upon Erich Fromm\'s Humanist Psychology. It is about a historical research, circumscribed in the scope of History of Education and Psychology and 20th Century. As sources, works of the authors mentioned have been used focusing primarily on two aspects: a) apprehension of the problems that were of interest to both authors and the solutions provided by both of them in that historical context; b) understanding of the hypotheses and expectations that were considered valid. The study has evidenced that both authors had as a starting point their own realities, transforming their reflections in concrete contributions to interpret the problem of freedom. Both lived the profound crisis of the contemporary world caused by the terror of totalitarianism and ideology, whose perversity threatened human freedom and functionalism of a democratic society and that translated itself in the intellectual field by the shredding of philosophical and religious tradition. Both used new methods to justify the search for the answer to the problem of freedom in a century stained by violence. Even though the ontological matrix of Freire\'s concept of freedom is different from Fromm\'s, contradicting the initial hypothesis of this paper, not only does Freire find in Fromm\'s humanist psychology a possibility to reflect upon the Brazilian educational problem, starting from the history of its educational tradition and the democratic inexperience from the Brazilian people, under an interdisciplinary view, with its anthropological philosophical foundation, but he also offers psychological categories to the human analysis for the formation of consciousness in individuals, key fact to the human freedom, extremely necessary to the education of a democratic society.

Resumo: O presente trabalho, tem por objetivo, pesquisar as influências de Erich Fromm nas principais obras de Paulo Freire, a saber : Educação como prática da Liberdade (1971), Pedagogia do Oprimido (2005), Conscientização (1980), porém, tendo visitado outras obras, não nos abstivemos de também fazer comentários de outras importantes referências do autor como Extensão ou comunicação (1983) e Ação cultural para a liberdade (1970), livros nos quais há grande discussão dos conceitos abordados. De Erich Fromm foram utilizados os livros citados por Freire, traduzidos para o Português como O medo á Liberdade (1960), O coração do homem (1967a) , Análise do Homem (1974) também O conceito marxista de homem (1967b). Para a pesquisa, foram observadas nos livros mencionados, citações de Freire feitas a Fromm. Observamos que Fromm aparece com recorrência em muitos temas abordados por Freire, tais como: O conceito de Homem, o conceito de liberdade e a noção de medo à liberdade. Partindo dessa observação e dessas temáticas, investigamos a influência de Fromm nos escritos de Freire, observando divergências e convergências entre os autores. O estudo realizado evidenciou que Freire mesmo tendo uma mudança epistemológica ao longo de seus escritos, recorre muitas vezes a Fromm para respaldar seus conceitos, porém trazendo uma perspectiva diferente à superação do medo à liberdade, construindo assim uma alternativa educativa à emancipação humana
Abstract: The work aims to research Erich Fromm's influence in Paulo Freire's major works, namely: Education, the practice of freedom(1971) , Pedagogy of the Oppressed(2005) and Conscientization(1980). Having, however, visited other works, comments were made on other important author bibliographic references, such as Extension or Communication(1983) and Cultural action for freedom (1970); books in which there is great debate on the discussed concepts. Erich's Fromms books used in the research were the ones that were quoted by Freire in his work, translated to Portuguese as: Fear will Freedom (1960), The Heart of Man (1967), Human Analysis (1974) And Also The Marxist concept of man (1967b). For the research, Fromm's quotes made by Freire were observed in the above mentioned books. As noted, Fromm appears frequently in many topics approached by Freire such as: the concept of men, the concept of freedom and the notion of fear of freedom. From these themes and observations, we investigate Fromm's influence in Freire writings, noting differences and similarities between the authors. The study showed that, even considering an epistemological change throughout his writings, Freire often resorts to Fromm to support its concepts, bringing, nonetheless, a different perspective in the solution to overcome the fear of freedom, building thus an educational alternative to human emancipation

Abstract:
Erich Fromms (1900-1980) Quellen werden aus seiner Biographie, dem Gedankengut der jüdischen Religion (vor allem der Propheten und des Talmud), der Soziologie Alfred und Max Webers, der religiösen und philosophischen Humanisten, des frühen Karl Marx und der Psychoanalyse Freuds erschlossen und anhand seines Werkes dargestellt und erörtert. Es folgen in chronologischer Reihenfolge Analysen von Fromms Beiträgen zu einer ethisch inspirierten Psychoanalyse, zur analytischen Sozialpsychologie, zur jüdischen, christlichen und buddhistischen Religionspsychologie und seinem Konzept einer nicht- theistischen, humanistischen Religion, zum Matriarchat, zum Marxismus und dem daraus abgeleiteten humanitären, kommunitären Sozialismus, zur Kulturanalyse, Kulturkritik und zum Humanismus. Detailliert wird auf Fromms berühmte sozialpolitische und kulturhistorische Untersuchungen des Mittelalters, der Renaissance, des Protestantismus, des Kapitalismus, des Nationalsozialismus, des Kommunismus, der Technik und der destruktiven Aggression eingegangen, welche zu seinen bekannten Begriffen des Gesellschaftscharakters , des Konsum- und Marketing-Charakters sowie der Nekrophilie führten. Fromms umfangreiches Werk wird abschließend gewürdigt und vor allem in den Bereichen der Sozialpsychologie, Aggressionstheorie und Pädagogik kritisiert, indem seine Konzepte auf die moderne Jugend des Jahres 2000 und den heutigen Gesellschaftscharakter angewandt werden. Methodisch wurde kritisch-historisch, religionspsychologisch und tiefenpsychologisch (psychoanalytisch und individualpsychologisch) vorgegangen.
Erich Fromms (1900-1980) sources are disclosed of his biography, of his judaistic thoughts (especially of des prophets and the talmud), of the sociologic concepts (Alfred and Max Weber), of the religious and philosophical humanists, of the early Karl Marx and of the psychoanalysis Sigmund Freuds. The analysis follows in chronologic order Fromms concepts of an ethical inspired psychoanalysis, of his socialpsychology, of his judaistic, christian and buddhist psychology of religion, of his project of an non-theistic humanistic religion, of the matriarchat, oft the Marxism and the derived humanistic communitarian Socialism, of the culture-analysis and critique. In detail are Fromms famous sociopolitical researches on the Middle Ages, the Renaissance, the Protestantism, the Kapitalism, the Nationalsocialism, the Kommunism, the technic and the aggression (destructivity) described. This leads to the terms of the social-character , the consum- and marketing-charakter and the necrophily . The work ends with the valuation and critique of Fromms ouevre especially in the parts of the socialpsychology, the theory of aggression and pedagogy. The evaluation is made with the character of the modern youth of the year 2000 and the modern social-character. As methods are used: history and critique of religion, depth-psychology (psychoanalysis and individualpsychology).

Abstract:
This thesis attempts to advance the underappreciated thought of Erich Fromm as both a crucial contribution to twentieth century intellectual history and a potentially pivotal point from which to transcend current theoretical impasses. In particular, I argue that Fromm’s radical humanism can participate in the rejuvenation of contemporary social theory, which is still largely constrained by the dual reductionism of positivism and poststructuralism, and that a return to it will encourage renewed theorising of, and empirical engagement with, the connections that obtain between the ‘psychological’ and the ‘social’, the ‘essential’ and the ‘constructed’, and the ‘is’ and the ‘ought’. I try to show that Fromm’s qualified essentialism and ethical normativism are sensible, viable, and desirable, and that they, coupled with his analytic social psychology, which is based on his underlying humanism and elaborated through a unique fusion of Marx and Freud, provide the basis for the development of practical strategies to realise humanism in the world. Perhaps above all, I try to show that there is a deceptive complexity and sophistication to Fromm’s ideas, which are all too often taken as simple and naïve.
